Please don't down-rate a book because of a printing error....

Folks, when you down-rate a book, you're NOT hurting the publisher. You're hurting the AUTHOR.

Triskell Edizione made an error for the Italian translation, book 2 of Dancing with the Lion, via Amazon. (Apparently, they're sending vol. 1, not vol. 2, for orders.) They still don't appear to have fixed it. I just got a 1-star rating from a reader who liked the book, but was mad about the error.

Triskell isn't being hurt by that. I AM. I have literally NO control over their printing process. None. I can't fix it. Giving my book a 1-star rating for something over which I have zero control is aggravating.

If you don't like my writing, don't like the story I told, etc., then yes, give the book whatever rating you think is fair.

BUT...please, please, if you're miffed due to a printer error (or other logistical matter), mention it in the review, or send an email directly to the publisher. Don't let that affect the star rating you give to the novel.

You're punishing the wrong entity. (Especially for a translation published in another country.)

whew, this is mostly done, probably! i spent the last four and a half days doing nothing but drawing this map, where my next ttrpg campaign will be set. the triskele is one continent (??? i honestly don't know what to call a collection of islands like this) of the world called the known shores. (yes, i will be drawing the other continents too; yes, i have a problem.)

a few notes!

i stole the names "the ethuveraz" and "barizhan" from the goblin emperor books because the names are dope.

many of the other names are pulled from irish/celtic history and geography.

i drew everything by hand, but i followed a lot of the tutorials located here, which i highly recommend!

this was made for my personal home game, not for commercial use. but feel free to use any/all of it in your own personal home games, idgaf.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR CHAPTER 38!

“I just had a huge braingasm!” Stiles ran after Zaida in the school hallway as soon as the bell for the end of English rang.

“A what?” The girl wrinkled her nose at the term.

“A braingasm - you know like a brain orgasm. It’s a portmanteau.” He explained.

“Yeah, no, I gathered that much. Just never say that word again.” She shook her head at him and continued walking to her locker, putting in the combination and opening the door to deposit her books inside. It was moments like these that reminded her that despite her crush on him, he was still just Stiles. It was a refreshing experience. “What is it you want?”

“You said after lunch. It’s now after lunch, so you’re coming with me to see Deaton.” The boy demanded, leaving no room for any other option.

“Lydia and I were supposed to leave early and have a girls' night.” She pouted in disappointment, overplaying it because she knew it would piss him off.

“And you think that’s more important than figuring out who the murdering, people-sacrificing psycho running around town is?” The boy’s eyes widened in frustration, looking as if he wanted to strangle her.

“God, I’m joking, Stilinski. Of course, I’m coming. You didn’t think I was going to let you go snooping without me, right?” She rolled her eyes at him, shutting her locker with a slam and slinging her backpack up over her shoulder.

“We’ve been over this like a hundred times, it's not snooping. It’s investigating!” He groaned loudly and followed after her towards the Jeep.

“Same thing,” She shrugged and brushed it off dismissively with a wave of her hand, knowing it would only infuriate him further. For some reason doing so always gave her a thrill of sorts.

“You're out of school early…” Deaton looked at Stiles and Zaida with a raised brow as they arrived at the animal clinic. She wiggled her fingers at him in a wave of greeting.

“Yeah, free period, actually.” Stiles explained. “Um, I was just headed home to see my dad. He's, uh...You know, I guess you probably heard people are kind of getting murdered again. It's his job to figure it out.”

“I gathered as much from the 'Sheriff' title.” Deaton gave them a small smile and opened the mountain ash gate to allow them both to walk through to the back room.

“Yeah, um...You know, it gets kind of hard for him to do his job when he doesn't have all the information. And we all know he's missing pretty much half the story here, right?” Stiles continued, his voice shot with nerves. Zaida frowned at hearing it, wondering why. “So then, I started thinking, and I remembered someone else who does have a lot of information. Someone who always seems to know more than anyone else around here.”

“You.” Zaida finished his sentence, starting to put the pieces together to figure out what Stiles already had. Peter had told them that the emissaries that gave wolf packs advice were usually Druids. She’d read about them from Celtic history and folklore, and they were particularly fond of sacrifices. Sacrifices just like the ones occurring around town. And what did Deaton do but provide them - a wolf pack - with advice?

“All these symbols and things - the triskeles, the bank logo, the mountain ash - all of it is from the Celtic Druids. And anyone who has ever looked up ‘human sacrifice’ before knows that the Druids had a pretty big hard-on when it came to giving one up to the gods.” The boy continued, and whilst Zaida wrinkled her nose at his choice of words, she was listening intently. “You ever hear of the Lindow man? Two-thousand-year-old body found in England? He was found strangled, head bashed in, throat cut - three-fold death. They also found pollen grains in his stomach. Guess what favourite Druid plant that was?”

“Mistletoe.” Deaton let out a heavy sigh. Zaida stood back, watching the interaction with keen eyes. This side of Stiles was incredibly attractive. She could watch him stand there and speak about information he’d put together and links he’d made until the cows came home and then some. But this feeling was new. She’d always thought Stiles was beautiful, but when he was like this? God, he was hot.

“I'm just telling you everything you already know, aren't I?” Stiles asked, though it seemed like it had been exactly what he’d expected from the man. Did he seriously suspect it was Deaton going around committing these murders? Deaton? The calm-spoken man who had helped them so much? “Then why aren't you telling us???”

“Maybe because when you've spent every moment of the last ten years trying to push something away - denying it, lying about it - it becomes a pretty powerful habit,” Deaton admitted that he was what they now both suspected him to be. A Druid. But was he the Druid they were looking for? Zaida truly didn’t think so. She trusted this man.

“All right, so this guy...is he a Druid?” Stiles questioned.

“We don’t know that it is a guy,” Zaida interjected, not wanting to cut off any demographic of suspects just yet.

“To answer your question, no. It's someone copying a centuries-old practice of a people who should have known better. Do you know what the word ‘Druid’ means in Gaelic?” Deaton leaned forward, looking at them closely. “‘Wise oak’. The Celtic Druids were close to nature. They believed they kept it in balance. They were philosophers and scholars - they weren't serial killers.”

“Yeah, well, this one is.” Stiles insisted, but their conversation was abruptly interrupted by the ringtone of Zaida’s phone. The opening lines to Keri Hilson’s ‘ Pretty Girl Rock ’ blared from the tiny phone speakers as she pulled the device out of her pocket and held it up to her ear, answering Lydia’s call.

“Hey, I can’t really talk right now. Can I call you back later?” She smiled apologetically at Deaton, then paused when she heard what the girl on the other end of the line was saying. “Wait, what ? Yeah, are you sure he's missing? Okay, we’ll meet you there.”

“What happened?” Stiles’ brows furrowed curiously.

“The music teacher’s been taken,” Zaida explained with worry in her hazel eyes.

“Oh, we gotta go.” Stiles nodded with an urgency in his tone.

“I’ll come with you. I’d like to see this for myself.” The doctor’s typically serene features even morphed into a concerned expression at this news, and Zaida knew it meant they were in deep shit.

Winnie: Yes. Druids are priests, she's a priest of the celtic Gooddess. In great-grandpa's books there are noted rites and how to celebrate festivities, Grandpa Quick educated his family to the worship and they all still practice -they celebrate Samhain as New Year, no Christmas but Yule, Beltane too. It's done very quietly and behind closed doors of course, but they do not follow Christian traditions. She does believe, the necklace she often wears has a triskele on it and has devotional value, it's worn as a Christian cross would be. She's open to the existance of other gods, if so many people believe in the Abrahamitic God, he must be true as well, Darcy met Odin so he surely is... She just worships her own

Shahra: It's... Complicated. She remembers she's religious. She doesn't remember what god(s) she worshipped, name, face, number... Nothing. She knows there's some higher power, deep in her bones. She won't be able to tell you a name or anything more specific than that. It's the reason she never converted to Islam in 9 centuries of living in Islamic countries. She'll say it's a nice religion and she deeply respects it, finds the Qur'an incredibly poetic and will be able to quote it and interpret it. She doesn't consider herself muslim because it never sat completely right with her, for her personal beliefs. So, she recognise it as very valid, adopted some things (she doesn't drink, for once, and the sense of community) but she doesn't practice because she feels it would just be insincere and offensive.

... It never did because she's a worshipper of Shakti and Shiva, and had a very close connection to that religion that wasn't totally severed when the thing happened. She'll get back to it with her memory back, so yes, she is religious and an active part of one. She just doesn't remember it.

Darcy: He spent years in the All-Green-Isle with Odin himself. He's a Jotunn, he walked with the gods and knows personally they exist. He never got back in contact with them after he came to England, but he knows they're there somewhere. He doesn't need their favours, but he still practice some, when he feels like it. Yes, but mildly.

Fun with Flags

I should have posted this on Flag Day (June 14th) but, as it so often does, life got in the way. So here’s a bonus Word of the Day you can save for next June. The Word of the Day is “flag.”

We’re talking about the noun here – a banner (star-spangled or not), pennant, banderole or gonfalon, generally made of cloth and attached by one end to a pole or rope, used as an emblem, symbol or signal.

If you were a regular viewer of The Big Bang Theory on TV, you’ll know that “Fun with Flags” was a recurring bit, an online web show within the sitcom. “Fun with Flags” was comedy gold.

So, where did the word “flag” come from? Who the hell knows? No one can say for sure, although there is some speculation that the noun is related to the verb “to flag,” meaning to droop, go limp, flutter or flap around loosely. The verb probably had its roots in Old Norse “flaka,” to flicker, flutter or hang loose.

The only national flag that is non-quadrilateral (that is, four-sided) is the flag of Nepal. At least one online source says the jagged edges are supposed to represent the Himalayas.

The flag of Mozambique is one of the very few national flags featuring weapons, and possibly the only one with an automatic weapon – in this case, an AK-47. There’s also an open book and a hoe, for what it’s worth.

And for overall weirdness, it’s hard to beat Sicily’s flag, which features three bare legs (a “triskeles”) surrounding a Medusa head, with three stalks of wheat growing out of it (Some say it’s three ears of corn, but it sure looks like wheat to me). We could go into the symbolism of all that at some length, but that’s all the time we’ve got for today’s episode of Fun with Flags…and Words.

Piercings/Tattoos: Many... Right arm has a Hades/Stitch mixup, a little cherry blossom that was my first tattoo, a rainbow paint splash with a semi colon. Left arm is a half finished sleeve of the original animated Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. Left Calf has a Serenity with "You Can't Take the Sky From Me" around it. Right leg has a Triskele and a teacup on the outside and back of my ankle. I have a Harry Potter quote on my hip and a little ECG tattoo that makes two little kitties. I have Ohana and my sister/nieces initials on the left side of my chest and my late cats paw print (with her ashes mixed with the ink) on the right side of my chest. My left hand has my late cats name on the side of it as well as a fire symbol on my ring finger while my left hand as the Panic! At the Disco 'P' on the side of it and a snowflake on that ring finger. Then my last two is a sleeping cat on the base of my neck and a puzzle piece tattoo behind my right ear.... Piercings wise, I have an industrial, a conch and nose piercing. I did have my helix done but it had a bad healing so I had to let it close.

Glasses/Contacts: I wear glasses but my eye sight isn't bad enough for contacts according to the opticians

How you get a translation of DANCING WITH THE LION in your language...

With the first volume of the Italian Dancing with the Lion due out Sept. 22nd, I've had several questions about getting the novels translated into various other languages. I'm sharing this because it's exactly backwards of how I thought it worked, and didn't know any better myself until another writer friend (then the publisher) explained it to me.

A request to translate a novel must come FROM a publisher in the country wishing to translate it. Riptide doesn't shop it around. There are some ways that publishers can put a book out for awareness, but small boutique publishers like Riptide simply don't have the money.

Triskell Edizioni approached Riptide, asking to buy the novels, in order to translate them into Italian. Riptide then negotiated a deal on my behalf (and obviously theirs too). Triskell did that because someone (or someones) wrote to them, asking them to acquire the novels. (They do a lot of translations of English novels, including m/m romance.) So the request got to the right publisher, who was interested.

Once one translation is made, it's usually a bit easier to get a second or third. But it really just depends on whether a publisher in that other country wants to pay to acquire the rights, and then pay a translator to make the translation.

I know at least one person says they plan to write to some French publishers, but whether anything will come of it, who knows?

Ergo, if you're really keen on a translation in your mother tongue, that's how it happens. :-)
