Projection: Vanishing and Becoming by Sean Cubitt
In this reading, the author Cubitt describes the dynamics of projection and how it functions not just technological or visually but as something that shapes our understanding of reality, culture, and perception of the world. Through cinema, media, and animation, projection is seen. It conveys our thoughts, our subconscious out to the world for others to see and understand. The author also uses multiple definitions for projection and how our perception changes from meaning to meaning. For example in a physiological sense projection allows emotions to be pushed onto others. Or in a metaphorical way of how we project a meaning onto humanity and society. Then in a more physical definition, how light is projected onto things to create images. Cubitt explains that it's these ways that influence our understanding of space, time, existence, and our relationship with the world around us.

The long and complex history of video art has been debated, along with theatrical and cinematic photography, Video Art involves the use of video and sound to record. Most video artists utilize moving pictures as a cheap and more accessible way of recording. A few artist like Bruce Nauman use body movement as means for exploration in performative art, utilizing the camera to capture the makings of themselves the performance.
Now in this day and age video is now a genre rather than a traditional movement than theatrical cinema. Some artists even use the visual images form multi-disciplinary uses that mimic traditional art forms, such as collaging photo frames together to create a new scene. The artist most known for this style of work is Trisha Baga who uses, photography, music, painting and sculpture to create film montages and collages.

TRISHA BAGA: “THE EYE, THE EYE AND THE EAR”
Tutto o quasi, quello che si fa in questi mesi, lo si fa dopo una lunga pausa. E’ stato molto suggestivo vedere e ascoltare le realizzazioni di Trisha Baga in “The eye, the eye and the ear” (fino al gennaio 2021) all’Hangar Pirelli Bicocca dopo il lockdown, quasi che questo tempo sospeso, abbia aggiunto un surplus di fascino a creazioni che ne hanno già molto di loro a cominciare da “Orlando” che apre la mostra. Cos’è Orlando? Si tratta di un testo del naturalista e scienziato William Beebe, “Half Mile Down” del 1934, saggio di oceanografia sulla forma di vita acquatica, dove alla parola “book” (libro), viene sostituita quella di “man” (uomo), mentre “it” (esso) diviene “her” (lei), generando uno scambio di identità tra entità e oggetti viventi che poi è uno dei fili conduttori dell’intera esposizione. Opera di concezione prettamente concettuale che viene riprodotta al contrario, come in uno specchio, al termine del percorso espositivo. Subito dopo l’ingresso nello “shad” dell’Hangar ci imbattiamo in “Hipotethetical Artifacts” (2015-2020), una serie di ceramiche che sembrano provenire da un surreale scavo archeologico e che vedono accostati barboncini fossilizzati da una colata di ceramica multicolore, ad altri oggetti tecnologici, anch’essi in ceramica colorata passati attraverso un flusso temporale indefinito e poi riemersi da esso. Insieme agli oggetti ceramici la mostra presenta cinque installazioni video. Se le ceramiche neo-archeologiche riproducono oggetti tecnologici della nostra civiltà come fax, macchine fotografiche, microscopi, reperti di una “modernità” invecchiata troppo rapidamente, più complesso �� il discorso sui video. Qui l’artista americana diventa parte di un complesso gioco di immagini divenendo essa stessa protagonista di video installazioni dal sapore vagamente pop, attingendo a piene mani, idee ed ispirazione da artiste quali Joan Jonas ed altri video performers. Di grande efficacia è, a questo proposito, “Studio Photos” (2012), girato nello studio dell’artista con fasci di luce in movimento che si soffermano, oltre che sul suo cane, anche su oggetti ritenuti significativi sparsi per la stanza; detriti culturali, oggetti che dànno senso al reale o che lo deprivano di esso.(continua)
