Craft Boo Review #1: Hop Juice IPA (Left Coast Brewing)

As a newfound “craft beer connoisseur,” I have recently developed an acquired taste for craft beer, particularly IPAs.  When I first tried an IPA, I will admit that my initial reaction was not that enthusiastic and I did not really enjoy the taste at first.  Over time, I gave craft beer more chances to win me over, as I found myself ordering local/regional beers time after time at any bar or restaurant.  My first craft beer review is on “Hop Juice Triple IPA” from Left Coast Brewing Co.

While browsing the “Craft Beer” section of my grocery store, I could not help but scan and see the many different types of local beer they had to offer.  When it came to deciding what beer to get to review, I thought why not pick a beer made by a brewery that many San Diegans are familiar with such as Stone Brewing or Ballast Point.  While browsing the selections, one bottle in particular caught my attention because not only was it slightly cheaper than the more familiar brands, but it came from a brewery I’ve never heard of before called Left Coast Brewing Co.

With all the competition and familiarity from breweries in San Diego, I decided to give this San Clemente brewery a try.  Left Coast Brewing Co. has been around since 2004 and “Hop Juice IPA” is one of their staple brews along with others like VooDoo Stout and Orange County IPA. I have never seen or tried a beer that was brewed from this area before so why not give it a try?  Some of this beer’s awards include the Bronze Medal in the 2006 Great American Beer Festival and the Gold Medal in the 2015 Las Vegas International Beer Competition. Being that this beer was a Triple IPA, with 10% ABV, I was curious to try this “Hop Juice.”  As I began to pour the beer in the glass, I could not help but notice the consistency of this IPA.  It has that nice cloudy, hazy, almost amber-like orangey shade that you see in many West Coast style IPAs. It’s definitely got that dark orange color that is hard to see through.  The aroma I got was surprisingly fresh, not quite strong hoppy, with a light pine aroma complemented with hints of grapefruit (or orange?) that I can scent.  

The initial taste I got from the beer was that grapefruit flavor zest almost instant and then you get that “maltiness” at the end.  It’s definitely bitter at the end, but not as bitter as I thought it would be at first sip.  The grapefruit and citrus of the beer really masks the strongness of the alcohol as I found it to be a smooth Triple IPA.  There’s definitely a pine resin in there as well.  The flavor is sweet but you get that classic slight bitter finish at the end, which is reminiscent of what an IPA should be.  I cannot help but notice the caramel malt taste at the end that lingers in the mouth which kind of balances out the hops.  Overall, this is a solid IPA.  I am surprised as it is not as “hoppy” as I thought it would be considering the name of the beer as I tasted more malt than hops, but nonetheless, I found this Triple IPA to be an easy and smooth beer to drink.  8/10

It has been a long day on the road, but it's time for winding down with a #VinylAndBeerSunday. I am spinning another excellent release that is celebrating its 50 anniversary. CAT STEVENS released CATCH BULL AT FOUR in September 1972. While it doesn't have a hit track such as MORNING HAS BROKEN, this is classic STEVENS with catchy melodies, lush orchestrations, and lively performances. One to listen to and cherish. I have accompanied these magnificent tunes with a beer I picked up in Canada this weekend. HEAD BANGER is a massive hoppy explosion along with a nice smooth finish.
