Fanfic Origin Story
Tagged by @bekkachaos 💕
What was your first fandom (reading and/or writing)?
Popslash RPF - NSYNC
What was first story you ever wrote.
My main ship was Lance/Chris (Trickyfish), so it was most likely one for them. I wrote some Justin/Chris (Timbertrick) and Justin/Lance (Lamblove) too. I was 12 and everything I wrote was basically crack-fic or dark-fic where people were dying and shit. It was awful.
What's a piece of advice you would give your younger fic writing self?
Everything doesn't have to be devastating to be interesting. You can write something with a happy ending and it can still be interesting. But also, keep writing, because you'll get better.
What’s an early fandom interaction that stuck with you (be it a nice comment, a friend you made, a fic that got a lot of feedback)
Back in the Merlin, Legend of the Seeker, Lord of the Rings days I met this one Australian graphic artist who was super sweet and made a TON of stuff for me. She did all the banner work for us in the Merlin Slash Awards (which I ran), made us little banners when we participated in the fun little team contests for Disney, LotS, and LotR AND made me banners for my LiveJournal accounts. Just unbelievably kind and I am so sad that we fell out of touch.
The one amazing thing that really blew me away was the cover art she made me for my first multi-chapter long fic, Unsuitable, for the Merlin fandom. She's soooo talented and I still think about her.
Post a sentence or two from an older fic and a sentence or two from a newer one (if you want).
My first Sterek (and TW) fic, Be the Overflow
“A guy like you? That’s a load of bullshit and you know it. Erica said she had a crush on you for quite a while and you never even noticed her until she turned. For someone who knows what it feels like, Stiles, you sure are a huge fucking hypocrite. There are plenty of people who--” but Derek didn’t finish that sentence. Whatever it was he was about to say, he no longer wanted to say it.
“People who what? Who want to be my friend? Who want to laugh at my jokes but make out with the guy who’s hotter and a lot more mysterious? Someone more like Scott? Yeah, I know all about that, Derek, and I’d rather you didn’t call me a hypocrite before having all the facts, alright? How’s about we all just shut the hell up and stop talking about my non-existent love life because that would be really fucking swell right about now,” Stiles spat with a bit more venom than even he knew he possessed. He looked back down at the pipe and the rope and decided the task definitely needed his undivided attention now.
“You are completely full of it. You’re going to keep blaming other people for the fact that you can’t see the things that are right in front of your own goddamn face, so you know what? You deserve what you get, Stiles.” There was a hardness in Derek’s voice that Stiles couldn’t really place.
The Teen Malex AU, The Answer is Always "Okay."
Michael seemed better when Alex glanced up again. “Guerin… you wanna tell me what the fuck just happened?” Alex held up his wrist to indicate.
“I don’t - I don’t even know how to do that,” Michael said. He was afraid. Terrified, even. Alex couldn’t just see it on his face, though—it was something viscous seeping into his veins from inside Michael. He could feel it.
Alex stood up, moving the short distance across the shed. “Oh-okay, Guerin, you need to start talking. I know you’re freaked out or whatever, but so am I.”
Michael blinked and looked up at Alex as though he just realized he was there. “Oh shit.”
“Yeah, oh shit.” Alex rolled his eyes. “Rationally, I understand that my wrist is fixed. I get that you did something. So what I’m sorta gonna need you to fill me in on is how the fuck that is.”
Tagging these lovely folks if they would like 💕

Ship names aren't an issue on ao3 because pairings are just "name | name" but on other sites it's hard to know what to search for or what to tag, especially if you're not really into the fandom. Sometimes it's the first part of their names like narusasu or their names mashed together like reylo or stucky. But if you're doing top/bottom rules you need to make sure whoever tops has their name first. But this doesn't apply to every ship for some reason. Also, if no one is being penetrated in the post, do you need to tag specially for who the top is?
Then you have ship names like "murder husbands" for Will/Hannibal or "professional associates" for Charon/Hermes. The absolute worst is the Pokemon fandom. The ship name for Arven x the female protagonist is HerbaMysticaShipping, and Arven x the male protag is SandwichShipping apparently. The ship between Red and Blue is NamelessShipping. Pokemon fans, I have to know, when a new game comes out do people scramble to be the one to name a new ship? Did the person who named "TrueRivalShipping" think it would be easy to figure out who the characters are?

25-foot-tall “Over the Moon” sculpture by Gordon Huether. A 7 1/2-foot-tall Texas longhorn sits on top of a crescent moon. One of several art installations at the CityLine Development in Richardson, Texas.
CityLine is a mix of upscale apartments, businesses, restaurants, and retail spaces positioned right next to a Dart Rail Station right on the border of Richardson & Plano. Looks like the area is about half developed now (hence the scaffolding in the picture above). The place has potential to be pretty cool. We ate at a seafood joint called “Tricky Fish” and enjoyed it very much.

O, R, V
O - Choose a song at random, which ship or character does it remind you of
honestly i don’t like...think about songs with ships or characters very often. i tried putting my itunes on random to see if anything would click, but it didn’t. sorry!
R - A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships
it’s so weird because i went SO HARD for the most extreme rarepairs before i got into winterhawk, but i just like this pairing so much that i haven’t really strayed! i really ship bucky/sharon. bucky/mantis. bucky/ghost. bucky/lillian from accounting with the lip piercing (I’M SO INTRIGUED BY HER). listen, bucky deserves happiness, and i think there are a lot of people out there who could make him feel good, and that’s all i want for him.
V - 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms
bucky/clint from marvel. david/patrick from schitt’s creek, trickyfish (lance/chris) from nsync (lol)

I found AO3 pretty intuitive. Took me like 5 minutes to realize how all the little buttons work. They're pretty straightforward. Apart from the AND filters - took me a while to realize what type of filters AO3 used. Beyond that, I'm not sure why people have a hard time? Wattpad and FFnet are way more of a pain in the ass.
--
It's all about familiarity.
I mean, look, AO3 works how my brain works. When we first set it up, it was what we were all used to, more or less, but an upgrade. It was hard to even see how it could ever be unintuitive because this was just How Things Were. From the style of trope tags to the fact that there's an index of fandoms by media type, it was all familiar.
But that thinking is a trap.
It's easy to say "Oh, well, that person's just an idiot", and sometimes, the problem really is laziness or sleep deprivation, but a lot of the time, it's different cultural context.
By the time we were designing AO3, I'd had many rounds of formal instruction in how to use library catalogues of various sorts, familiarity with Delicious, years in LJ slash fandom whose assumptions form the metadata structures of AO3, etc.
There's nothing strange about going "Why are ship types a top level system of organization?" or "How do I search for genre X in any anime fandom but not in non-anime fandoms?"
It's strange to me, but it's not strange in the context of people who read fanfic overall.
It's not just about learning the search features that do exist: it's about unconscious assumptions about what metadata must exist.
If you don't know to look for something and you aren't coming from a culture where poking buttons is encouraged, you're going to take a lot longer to find things than if you already have a good idea of what's probably there somewhere.
To pick two very obvious examples:
If I were designing a gen-focused archive, I'd make genre a top-level organization system, like on FFN.
If I were designing a more x-reader-focused or One True Character-focused archive, I'd make the ship searches work like Character X/Anyone instead of having to click on each ship of your blorbo or each ship with Reader.
If someone has years of experience searching for some bullshit 'trickyfish' style nonsense ship name because they're on sites with garbage searches, they'll go to AO3, plug some words into the search bar at the top, and then feel like they can't find any relevant results because everything that turns up is just that word in author's notes on an irrelevant fic. They might even go to advanced search...
...and then totally miss that the sidebar filters are the best part of AO3, and they don't appear when you do a search search as opposed to starting from a tag.
Isn't Advanced Search the most... well... advanced search? On every other website, it is, but not on AO3.
--
Each new site/technology/culture/etc. a person has to learn takes time and attention. If you're exhausted and burnt out, that's hard. Even if you're not, it takes at least some effort. It doesn't Just Happen, not for every person and every new thing.
We should tell people to read the damn FAQ, yes.
But I can't say I always do that myself on every site unless I'm both having a problem and invested enough to care about solving it.
--
On an average day, most of us don't need to care why some people have a hard time figuring out AO3.
But if anyone is planning to design a site or needs to teach a bunch of kids how to use the library or something, it's worth keeping in mind just how many unconscious assumptions are hiding behind the idea of something—literally anything—being "intuitive".
