Grasshoppers have long been celebrated for their remarkable ability to jump great distances with the use of their powerful rear legs. However, recent research has revealed another impressive adaptation: the ability to grasp objects with their front legs. This ability, known as grasping, is essential for a variety of behaviors in grasshoppers, including sampling and grooming.

Most arthropods, such as crayfish, crabs, and insects, are equipped with grasping appendages, but grasshoppers evolved a unique system. Instead of using hooked claws, grasshoppers rely on small, trimodal sensory setae called “pinnose” setae. These tiny hairs are located on the grasshopper’s front legs and act as pressure and tactile receptors. When the grasshopper touches something with its front legs, these setae sense the pressure and allow the grasshopper to identify and grab a hold of an object.

Grasping is also an important tool for the grasshopper to handle its food. Interestingly, grasshoppers carry food from place to place by caching it in their mandibles before transporting it with their front legs. Furthermore, having front legs adapted to grasping is also essential for grooming the antennae, where grasshoppers scrape their front legs together to clean the sensory organs on their antennae. All of these functions require an incredibly precise grasping mechanism, and the grasshopper’s pinnose setae provide the perfect solution.

Grasping is an essential tool for grasshoppers and has allowed them to adapt to their environment and survive in a range of habitats. Without their unique cordsless ability to grasp, grasshoppers would be severely limited in both their ability to feed and clean themselves, as well as in their ability to jump long distances.

Merfolk are native to their world, the Sea of Ondine (named for one of their many gods (seriously, there are so many, they have one for every star)) and are completely unrelated to any other known group. Their name for themselves aligning with that of skyfolk and seafolk is purely coincidental.

Fun fact about them, they have trimodal sex (unlike humans who are bimodal), so have 3 base genders, none of which are analogous to what we humans have. The 3 are Haar, Maar, and Daar

Maar are medium-sized, sporting bright colours and longer tail fins. They're considered the main carers of their colony, taking roles as childminders, doctors and farmers.

Haar are longer and bulky, sporting slightly drabber colours, but with more noticeable iridescence. Historically, they were considered defenders, taking roles as soldiers, but in the modern age, most are pushed towards being builders and hauliers.

Daar are typically smaller and a lighter built, sporting darker colours. Being much more nimble swimmers, they traditionally take roles such as hunters, messengers and performers.

An extra bit of spice is that all 3 can reproduce with one another (they have one type of reproductive cell that is universal for all sexes) and can change their physical sex without any external help. It can take some time but given a few years, they can completely transition.

They have gills and can breathe underwater, but are surprisingly well adapted for living on land, some have even travelled off-world and are living in human settlements. Their terrestrial movement is a little clumsy, but that's what you get when your only real option is to pull yourself and your 6ft tail with just your arms, but they can scramble along quite quick if they practice. They need to visit the water at least once a week, otherwise, they get very dry skin, but are otherwise comfortable on land.

They also have quite an impressive regenerative quality. As long as their vital organs stay in their head and torso stay safe (and they keep enough blood inside), they can grow back pretty much any body part. If it's something like a finger, it'll be back in a week, an arm in a month or 2. Even if they lose their entire tail, they'll be swimming again in about 6 months (it'll take a year to get their full length back, but 6 months is enough to get out of the shallows).

In addition to the regeneration, removed parts take a lot to stop them. If an arm loses its connection to the brain, it will flail about, very sharp claws extended, for several days before it stops scratching. For reasons that are probably obvious, other aquatic predators tend to leave them alone.

They're very inquisitive, perhaps more so than humans, and have a bit of a magpie-like tendency to be drawn to shiny things. This has made archaeology a popular job among them, especially with the scattered remnants of a civilisation that predated them by a long time. Little is known of them, besides building fragments and half a crystalline skull, just that they were there and may be responsible for a few of the phenomena that occur in their world.

These seem to be given as binary variables, not distributions across a real variable.

We could also suppose drafting continuous measures of masculinity and femininity, but I don’t think we could create a “measure of binarity” that then correlates with both? Something like 1–([distance from the masculinity median]+[distance from the femininity median])/2 (assume the masc/fem scales are 0 to 1 themselves) would not give larger values for larger values of M or F, nor would it give smaller values for smaller values of M or F (since most people have one large and one small value of these).

But now that you mention multimodality: trimodal distributions might work though. If values on measures A, B and C all anticorrelate with each other, I suppose that suggests 1/C positively correlating with A and B at the same time?
