Typically the Japanese macaque gets all the wintertime hype, but the barbary macaques of Trentham Monkey Forest are big fans of playing in the snow! These charismatic North African monkeys are the only macaque species that are not native to Asia, and before the ice age they populated Europe as far north as the British Isles and Germany.

Wikong isn't just fluffy because he's got a bigger tummy, though. Pregnancy actually does make a mother's fur much softer, meaning Mei is on point about Wukong being super duper fluffy. Fluffy becomes a common nickname among the MKrew for Wukong, much to his sorta, not actual embarrassment. Legit dude doesn't actually mind. He just finds it embarrassing because, as a king, you'd expect a better title than Fluffy. Sandy does have to stop Mei from trying to pet the fur, though, tempting as it is. He's seen what happens when a pregnant cat is touched when they don't want to be, he doesn't want to know what would happen with a pregnant monkey demon

Yup! Pregnant/mother macaques don't lose their winter fur (gotta keep the baby warm), so they look super fluffy!

Notice in this photo taken by the Trentham Monkey Forest; the male's fur is darker/more coarse than the female's. That's cus the female's more dense winter fur hasn't shed even in summertime.

I love the thought of any SWK or LEM who has an Egg (stone or metaphorical) has fur that just *poofs* up like a persian cat.

LMK Wukong is def embarassed, esp since Mei keeps asking to pet him. He only allows her cus he's a touch-starved monkey., but otherwise he spitting & hissing like, as Sandy puts it "a grumpy mama cat". Wukong does enjoy the increased grooming sessions tho.

Macaque grumbles about getting his hairbrush caught in the thicker fur, but secretly loves the texture. Entire hand getting lost in Wukong's fur like the best fleece blanket. Mac forgets to notice that his own fur has gotten thicker...

monkey facts from today (barbary macaques)

- came from argentina / morocco

- there are 3 groups not 2 at the forest

- they eat the left over jacket potatos at the end of the day (the old ones whose teeth are worn down)

- oldest in down group is 25, oldest is top group is 30!!!

also today

we played on the monkey play ground and it was more adult size not kid size so we had fun.

Every year we try to have one stay-cation where we stay with my parents on the Wirral and go for day trips from there. It gives us another 2 hour circular window of places to see which might otherwise be too…

Peak District part 2 - Who on earth goes to Stoke-on-Trent for a holiday?

We had a day out at the Trentham Estate. They have a monkey sanctuary where the monkeys live in a 60 acre forest as though they were in the wild. (They are native to North Africa and parts of Spain so the climate and flora are similar enough for them to live fairly happily)

The estate itself has grounds designed by Capability Brown including a massive man made lake. The original house was demolished but the old conservatory and Chapel are still there. The grounds also had a sculpture trail and a Chelsea-esque show garden area.
