Battle of Lake Erie

The Battle of Lake Erie (10 September 1813), also known as the Battle of Put-in-Bay, was a decisive naval engagement in the War of 1812. It saw a squadron of US ships, under Oliver Hazard Perry, defeat a British squadron near Put-in-Bay, Ohio, ultimately leading to the American domination of Lake Erie and allowing for their recapture of Detroit.

In the spring of 1813, the sounds of constant shipbuilding echoed off the waters of the Great Lakes. For almost a year now, the nations of the United States and the United Kingdom had been at war, with the fate of Canada hanging in the balance. Two US invasions of the British colony had already been repelled before the Americans shifted their focus to the Great Lakes, particularly the mighty Lake Ontario. Both sides knew that naval superiority would give the Americans an advantage in their next invasion attempt, leading both sides to race to put new ships in the water. By June, the Americans and the British each had naval squadrons patrolling Lake Ontario, however, neither squadron moved to attack the other. Since naval actions tended to be unpredictable – reliant as they were on external factors like the wind – neither squadron wanted to take the initiative and risk its own destruction. Instead, the squadrons just danced around one another, waiting for the other to make the first move.

Ships were also being built on Lake Erie, even though it was considered by both sides to be of secondary importance to Lake Ontario. Currently, Lake Erie was under the control of the British, who had seized it early in the war and had used it to help maintain their occupation of the Michigan Territory after the Siege of Detroit (15-16 August 1812). If the Americans wanted to retake Michigan, they would need to first establish dominance on Erie, leading them to begin a shipbuilding program on this lake as well. Command of this burgeoning US squadron was given to Oliver Hazard Perry, a 27-year-old naval officer from Rhode Island, who had already accumulated a great deal of naval experience during his service in the Quasi-War and the First Barbary War. In late March, Perry arrived at Presque Isle, where the new ships were being built at a frantic pace. Crews of axmen had already laid low the surrounding forests to gather enough wood for the vessels, often chopping nonstop from sunrise to sunset; so swift was their work that, in the words of historian Pierre Berton, "a tree on the outskirts of the settlement can be growing one day and part of a ship the next" (508).

Still, there were frustrating delays. Food shortages led the workers to go on strike, while materials ordered from far-off locations – canvas from Philadelphia, for example, or spike rods from Buffalo – took a while to arrive. When the ships finally neared completion in July, Perry faced a new problem: a lack of sailors. Commodore Isaac Chauncey, the commander of the Lake Ontario fleet and Perry's direct superior, had kept all the best sailors for himself, sending Perry only those he considered to be the dregs of his squadron. Eager to attack as soon as possible, Perry spent the following weeks pleading with Chauncey for more men, writing, "For God's sake…send me men and officers" (Berton, 523). In August, Chauncey finally relented and sent Perry 89 experienced men. Among these reinforcements was Lt. Jesse Elliott, whose recent exploits, including the daring capture of two British brigs, had turned him into a war hero. Perry was so happy to have these men that he put Elliott in command of one of the new ships, USS Niagara, and let him choose his own crew. Elliott, an arrogant and ambitious man who felt slighted that he had not been given Perry's job, chose all the best men, leaving the other captains to grumble that the ships were unequally manned now that all the best sailors were on the Niagara.

On 31 August, Perry received more welcome news: General William Henry Harrison, commander of the US Army of the Northwest, had sent him 100 Kentucky riflemen to act as marines in the coming battle. The Kentuckians, many of whom had never seen a ship before, marveled at each and every detail, climbing the masts and exploring the holds before Perry ordered them on deck to teach them naval etiquette. By early September, Perry's small squadron was ready for battle, or as ready as it was likely to get. Of his nine vessels, three were brigs (Lawrence, Caledonia, Niagara), five were schooners (Ariel, Scorpion, Somers, Porcupine, Tigress), and one was a sloop (Trippe). His flagship, USS Lawrence, was named after his friend, Captain James Lawrence, who had recently been mortally wounded aboard the USS Chesapeake in a single-ship action off Boston. Lawrence's last words – "Don't give up the ship" – were sewn in white letters on a dark blue battle flag that Perry intended to hoist onto his masthead as a signal for action. With his ships in the water and his men on the decks, Perry now had only to wait for the coming fight.

A year after leaving New York, Peter and Tony are getting on alright. It's hard to leave their ghosts behind, but at least they're no longer ghosts themselves.

The air was cleaner in Michigan.

On quiet weekend mornings, Peter would get up early and sit on the porch railing, watching the sun rise over empty plains and spindly trees.

No one worked the farm anymore. They just owned the land. Tony’s cousin Jude said if they were lucky then one day the government would discover oil or diamonds or some other mineral beneath the ground.

And then they’d sell it off and retire early and move west and turn brown under the California sun.

But in the meantime everyone still got up in the morning and drove into town to jobs at the rubber factory.

Peter didn’t work there. There’d been too much hassle from the boss about his age and his ID and possibly calling social services. So instead they dropped him off at the neighbours where Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis didn’t care about hiring a ghost so long as he helped with the milking and the feeding and the always-multiplying never-ending chores on a farm.

Mrs. Jarvis usually sent dinner home with him, which was nice. And he got to spend a lot of time outside, which wasn’t so bad provided it didn’t get too cold.

The first winter without boots hadn’t been very kind.

Peter turned when a hand slipped around his waist. He smiled into Tony’s neck and leaned back into the embrace.

“Are the others still asleep?”

Peter couldn’t help it. Even after a year, he couldn’t relax in Tony’s arms. Not with the others watching. Not with the cousins’ loud tantrums about faggots and their ilk.

“I think Simon’s taking a shit.”

Peter laughed.

Tony pecked him on the cheek and then pulled back again, leaning over the porch and watching the sunrise.

“Thinking about going into the city next weekend,” Tony said, reaching to hold Peter’s hand and settle it on his knee. “You wanna come?”

“Just you?” Peter asked.

“Just me, or just us.” Tony cracked a smile. He always looked tired. He didn’t sleep well, Peter could always hear him tossing restlessly at night in his own bed.

Too many memories, Tony said vaguely.

Too many nightmares from days choked by tall buildings and the stink of blood.

From inside, someone shouted, “Hey, one of you city princesses gonna get the coffee started?”

Tony pulled his hand away from Peter’s and turned back to the house.

“Oh allow me,” Tony drawled as he walked back inside, the screen door squealed on its hinges as he slammed it, “Seeing as I’m not the one sitting at the table right next to the coffee.”

James answered, voice low and bitter, but a moment later Peter heard laughter and his shoulders relaxed.

James was the oldest. Jude was the youngest. Joseph was the nicest. Simon was the cruelest.

They all talked about things they’d never do. They dreamt of saving up money and buying a nice car, or getting married to their girl in town, or moving to Detroit or Columbus or Indianapolis. But no one ever went anywhere. Every paycheque disappeared before the next one, transformed into cigarettes and coffee and beer. Peter figured that was okay. At least they had somewhere to live, despite James’ occasional threats to call Tony’s father and tell him where he was.

But just like all the promises they made to themselves, the brothers never followed through on threats either.

“Peter!” Joseph called from the window, “Eggs, come inside!”

“Coming!” Peter called, and he swung off the porch. The house was cramped in contrast to the open, empty land around it. There were always dishes in the sink and always laundry on the clothesline and never enough toilet paper.

“Just sayin’” Jude was grumbling as he emerged from one of the bedrooms with Simon on his tail, “Money’s not so bad in the army.”

“There’s not even a war to fight right now,” Simon smarted, making everyone freeze and stare at him.

“What?” Simon asked, reaching with two fingers to eat a potato off Tony’s plate.

“‘Nam?” Tony prompted.

At the same time, Jude said, “Berlin?”

And Joseph added, “Whatever the fuck’s going on with the Soviets.”

James threw yesterday’s newspaper at the back of Simon’s head.

“Read up, whydoncha?”

Simon grumbled and swiped the newspaper onto the floor. Then he crouched over his plate like a predator and started to shovel food into his mouth.

Peter took his plate and, without enough chairs, he seated himself on the kitchen counter to eat. Tony leaned next to him, the lights were off but morning was gradually spilling into the little home, making every one squint. Dust particles were suspended in the air, like they could choke on sunlight itself.

Tony said around a mouthful of food, “Pete an’ I are gonna go to Detroit next weekend.”

The cousins hummed. No one jumped on a request to go with them. They’d probably be hungover anyway.

James wagged a finger at Peter, “Tell the Jarvises, yeah? They might be counting on you next weekend for baling.”

Peter nodded, barely hiding the smile that ghosted onto his lips.

It wasn’t perfect in Michigan.

But it was cleaner. And quieter. And people might be counting on him. People might need him.

Tony put his plate on the table with a clank. Then he leaned back with his elbows on the counter, his arm next to Peter’s knee.

Peter reached to touch him, grazing his fingers along the back of Tony’s neck, just out of sight. His hand went lower, to his shoulderblades, and then to wrap around Tony’s arm. He gave a squeeze, pressed his thumb down into tanned skin, held onto him.

He wasn’t a ghost anymore.

Lafayette Park,  Mies van der Rohe, L Hilberseimer, A Caldwell, 1956

"This was built as an integrated community: racially, ethnically, economically. A cross section"

To me, the most interesting thing about Lafayette Park is not its resemblance to equally successful communities, but its similarities to unsuccessful ones. The widespread failure of most other American post-war urban renewal projects is well known.  These set out to flatten derelict, traditional-style urban neighbourhoods, and move their low income residents into Le Corbusier-inspired modernist towers, isolated on vast grassy lots. In their wake, countless writers, most notably Jane Jacobs, have illustrated why the opposite model of traditional, active, and overlooked city streets is more successful in fostering safe and happy communities.

But at Lafayette Park, modernist structures by Mies Van Der Rohe - including three tower blocks - sit upon a vast green, isolated from roads, in what was, at the time of construction, a deprived and struggling city. Furthermore, that city was arguably more entwined than any other with the motor car, source of so many 20th Century planning atrocities. Yet today Lafayette is still considered an exemplar of placemaking, beloved by its residents, whilst countless failed  developments of the era have been detonated. There seem to be several key reasons for this.  While Lafayette's homes are separated from roads, they still overlook and passively surveil well-used pedestrian routes. The site includes a mix of densities and tenures, combining high rise rental apartments with two story townhouses. The tower blocks provide residents with the dignity of useful facilities, such as a gym and swimming pool, and a supermarket and school can be walked to, without the need to cross any vehicular streets. Unlike so many developments in the Corbusian model, Lafayette doesnt sit on a bare monotony of grass, but within a landscaped and tree-filled park, carefully designed to provide views and the amenities of nature. It also sits within the city, rather than on its outskirts, making access to services and employment easier.

Perhaps the most important quality which distinguishes this from, for example, a Pruit Igoe, is its social design. By seeking a truly inclusive mix rather than the more common concentration and isolation of poverty, and by designing buildings and spaces with thoughtfulness and beauty, residents feel respected by and proud of their home, and will in turn care for the place itself, and for those they share it with. It is actually the shortage of such places  elsewhere that currently threatens Lafayette Park’s inclusivity, as the desirability, and price, of its homes continues to rise. Fairy Tale

“I swear, it's like a fairy tale.” Courtney swung me around, not minding the other people in the lunch line. She bumped into Scott Noble, who turned and glared at her. It cowed her a little, but not much. Her body stopped moving, but her mouth didn't.

“I had no idea what to do. Here I am, stuck at the gas station, with a full tank and a flat tire. And because it's after midnight, the guy behind the counter wouldn't leave it and help!  The best he said he'd do was keep an eye on my car if I pushed it away from the pump for the night, and if I came back at the shift change at seven he'd help me put on the spare. But I didn't really trust that. I mean, sure, I'm sure he'd watch it and all that, but he can't see everything.  So I asked for a 24-hour tow company, to see if someone could at least take it to a service shop because I figured, hey, there it would safe and in no rush to be fixed. I'd just get a ride home, and to school the next morning with you.”

I nodded in the right places, making listening noises while I told the lunch lady I wanted pizza. Monday's the school got it from Gino's Bakery and Gino made the best pizza for miles around.

“You listening, Diane?”

“Yes, you couldn't figure out what to do about the flat tire.”  My hand hovered over the mini-fridge. Water or orange juice? The school had gotten rid of pop a year ago.

“Yes! And so there I was, flipping through the yellow pages when this college guy walks in, and I can tell cuz he's wearing the CC's sweatshirt. And on a whim, he just looks at me and says, 'that you with a flat tire' and oh boy Courtney his voice was like chocolate. And his eyes were a piercing gray, never thought gray eyes pretty before I saw his. But they were like mercury, liquid silver, and I swear I just kinda stared open-mouthed at him. Didn't realize I was gaping with my mouth open until the counter guy answered for him. I couldn't believe I embarrassed myself like that! “

I grabbed a cookie while staying in line at the register. I needed a treat after listening to her latest boy drama.

“Anyway, the college guy, William by the way, asks if I have a spare, and I say yeah, but I don't know how to change a tire.  So he said he'd do it for me.  Took off his jean jacket, um, those arms, and figured out what all the stuff in the emergency kit was. Boom, not ten minutes later the spare is on the car!  I gotta hit the service station after school today, but hey, I drove home with Mom none the wiser!  I asked what I could get William for his trouble.  I was thinking a beer, no way the gas station guy was gonna give my fake a double check, but you know what he asked for instead?”

“A million dollars?” I said, sitting down at the end of our usual table. Courtney pouted as she sat down across from me.

“No, a kiss. And a token to remember me by.”

I raised my eyebrow. “Did this kiss lead anywhere?”

“That's what makes this such a fairy tale! He only kissed my hand! And took that fake flower pin I had, saying every time he looked at its fake beauty he'd be reminded of how my face outshone it threefold. Who says such things, threefold? Anyway, his last name is Prince. William Prince.  Now don't tell me he doesn't sound dreamy.”

“Actually, he does. Did you get his number?”

“Yup,” Courtney pulled out her cell phone. “We've been texting all morning. He wants to take me to a movie tomorrow night.”

“Go for it! And ask if he has another gentlemanly friend.”

“So?” I asked Courtney in the hallway on the way to lunch.  She was practically glowing.

“It was amazing.  I mean, we didn't pay attention to the movie of course, but he insisted on paying for dinner, which was at this super fancy place. I should have dressed better. And he paid for the tickets and snacks. But you know what, he saved me again!”

“Really?”

“Yeah, walking back to his car this huge dog attacked us.  It grabbed a hold of my skirt, and I was wearing my favorite one, the soft gray that swirls around my ankles, and pulled.  It slipped off my hips and oh Diane, my underwear was exposed to the entire parking lot! It was awful! But William picked up this steel pipe on the ground and poked the dog in the side as if it was a sword.  The dog took off, leaving me on the cold ground with my skirt halfway down my thighs and William standing over me.  But I swear, just like Prince Charming would do, he helped me up, completely ignoring my underwear, and just asked if I was alright.  God, he's a dream.  He saved me from a modern-day dragon.”

“Wouldn't that be a giant lizard or something?”

She hit my shoulder. “I'm being symbolic here! He's saved me twice now! If that's not a prince in shining armor, I don't know what it. Like I said Monday, I'm living in a fairy tale.”

It was probably because I just came from English that I remembered Ms. Flagg's tidbit about fairy tales.

“Did you know fairy tales were originally cautionary stories?  You know, warnings not to go into the woods or talk to strange people.”

Courtney snorted. “Ariel and Aurora and all those princesses ended up living a happy life. If anything, fairy tales are about what you gain by being a good person. Which I totally am.”

I wanted to say something about how while Disney movies might have happy endings, the stories had not been as pleasant. The Little Mermaid committed suicide. Aurora was raped while asleep and woke up during childbirth, only to die during the procedure. Good people didn't always win, even if the Huntsman saved Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel killed the witch.

But really, what a stupid thing to be thinking about.  Detroit might be a dangerous city jungle, but Courtney was streetwise enough to know when a stranger was dangerous or not. Female intuition and experience.

Sunday night, I heard soft taps at my window.  Courtney throwing candy at it, we found out years ago the problem of using rocks.

I opened it to see her standing at the base of the tree that grew near my window. She was pale, bundled up tight in her coat and scarf, hand clutching the navy fabric close to her neck.  It wasn't that cold.

“Court?” I whispered. I might be up, but my parents had gone to bed recently.

She looked up at me with pleading eyes and my heart melted. “One moment, can't climb down in shorts.”

I traded my sleep boxers for sweat pants, then crawled through the window. From there, I slowly made my way down the tree. My jump the last foot startled Courtney from her grass gazing. I could make out the tears in her eyes, the heavy mascara on her eyes. And the blood on the scarf.

“Courtney?” I said, grasping her shoulders.  “You're bleeding. Do you need a doctor?”

She shook her head. “It's small, just a band-aid would do.”

Nodding, I uncovered the spare key to the backdoor and let us in.

“What happened?” I demanded, tip-toeing to the bathroom, my hand on her wrist. Her skin was icy cold. I flipped the light on in the bathroom and we both winced at the sudden light. Once my eyes had readjusted, I commanded her to sit on the toilet and went searching under the sink for band-aids.

When she didn't say anything, I knew something was really up.

“Courtney?”

“You know how you said fairy tales are warnings?”

I had to think back to the beginning of the week. “Yeah.” I drew out the word, not sure where this was going, and pulled out the med bag.

“Well, I... I should have figured the one I was living in was too good to be true.”  She pulled down her scarf.

Her neck was smeared with red and now in the bathroom light, I could see the gleam of blood soaked into the scarf. More than enough that Courtney would be woozy and a little unsteady on her feet, but she had been fine entering the house.

"Shit," I said, forgoing the band-aids to reach for a washcloth. Courtney's hand on my wrist stopped me.

"It's a lot of blood, but that's not the problem."

"Not the problem!" I hissed, having no desire to wake my parents.

“William... he, he bit me. See, he's is a prince, and it's given him certain powers.” Courtney smiled, and as I watched her incisors grew. “He's a... a vampire, and now I am too.”

I'm Gonna Give You All My Heart Can Give

Welcome one and all to the first day of psychmas! Find the prompts here. I had fun writing this one, I always love doing narratives and especially ones on Juliet. Hope y'all enjoy! Summary: Juliet O'Hara has spent four Christmases with Shawn and Gus since moving to San Fransisco. Each one is memorable for different reasons. Prompt: Gifts also on ao3 ___

The first Christmas since moving to San Francisco is quiet and calm. It’s just her, Shawn, and Gus. All three of them had traveled to Santa Barbara a few days before to have a Christmas party with the Lassiter’s and Henry and as much fun as that was, she’s thankful to be spending Christmas alone with her fiancé and his best friend.

She’s the last one to get her gift. Gus had gone first, receiving noise-canceling headphones from her and pretending not to see Shawn’s smug face or hear his comments about needing them later. Shawn had given him a detailed map of all the best food places in San Francisco along with the promise that he’d drop anything and go with him whenever he asked.

Shawn had absolutely loved the shiny wrapping paper that she used, spending more time playing with that than actually opening up the present but she didn’t mind. The look on his face as he unwrapped a black hoodie with the words “psychphrancisco” written in red was more than enough to make up for it. And he nearly cried at Gus’ gift, a signed certificate from both Chief Vick and Chief Lassiter thanking them for their consulting services over the past eight years.

Finally, it’s her turn. Gus hands her a small red wrapped box and she bursts into a huge grin upon opening it. It’s a small framed photo of the three of them, plus Carlton, taken during one of their first post case celebratory hangouts. Their faces are younger, less worn by time and stress but the signs of friendship and that underlying bond is very prevalent.

And then Shawn silently slides her another box. The wrapping screams “Gus”. It’s blue with white snowflakes, a gold ribbon down the middle, tied into a bow. The edges are neat and straight and she can barely see the small bits of tape holding the package together. But the gift inside is clearly from Shawn.

It’s two pictures, side by side on one sheet of paper, she and Shawn drawn out in beautiful detail and adorned with watercolor. In one they’re standing in front of their old house in Santa Barbara and the other in front of their loft’s entrance in San Francisco. Her hair is longer in the second picture, a sign of time past but their smiles are all the same, just happy to be together. Below in beautiful letters, swooping and scrawling- a skill that she knows he picked up from his dad- is written: “Home is Wherever You Are”.

Her breath catches in her throat, tears pricking in the corner of her eyes and they threaten to spill over when she notices the glinting ring on her left hand in the second picture. It’s a little artist’s touch- after all the real ring had been stolen- but it makes her heart swell with emotion.

Shawn places his hand on her knee, squeezing slightly and she beams at him. He gives her a lopsided grin and she notes just how cute he is. She’s so glad to be engaged to him.

The second Christmas in San Francisco is a little larger and a little crazier. The Lassiters, Vicks, and Henry all cram into their loft, Christmas music playing and conversation ringing throughout. She loves having a big Christmas, after all, it’s what she grew up with, but a small part of her mourns the loss of it being just the three of them. She also wishes she was actually married this Christmas but that’s something she’ll never tell anyone.

The gift exchange is hectic, with multiple people scrambling and opening their boxes. There’s a lot that she can’t quite recall but she will never forget the look on Iris’ face as she unwraps Juliet’s gift. A soccer ball. It’s white with pink and black stripes and nearly takes out a lamp or two but Iris makes her pinky swear that she’ll take her to go play a match sometime.

This time, Shawn’s gift to her is wrinkled, the wrapping paper sticking out on the edges and massive pieces of tape holding the whole thing together. He clearly wrapped it and the image of him wrestling with paper and tape is enough to make her smile. It’s a small heater for her office as she’d been complaining about the cold atmosphere for weeks now. She’s touched that he would think of something to make her life a little better but that’s just who Shawn is, always listening and meeting her needs. (She’s a little disappointed, however, that it’s not an engagement ring.)

Juliet would never consider herself a resentful person but by the time the third Christmas rolls around, she’s a bit peeved. Her and Shawn are no closer to being married. In fact, he seems to actually be going backwards in their relationship. She’s caught him a few times slipping and calling her his “girlfriend” instead of “fiancée” and she’s spent way too much time wondering if he’ll ever actually be ready to be married. She loves him regardless and thinks that if he ever decides that he doesn’t want to get married, she’ll stay but it’s exhausting having no clue what he’s thinking.

They go to Santa Barbara for this Christmas, spending it in the Lassiter’s house along with Henry and Gus. (The Vick’s decided to spend Christmas in Detroit with Karen’s family.) Shawn makes a joke about sneaking off into his old bedroom and she has to gently remind him that that’s now Lily’s room and there will be no sneaking off tonight.

He pouts for a minute and then Carlton announces that they’re opening up gifts and his attention is elsewhere. She loves it when his eyes light up like that.

He bagged his gift this year. It’s a plain red bag with way too much tissue paper but he’s smiling so big that she’s very distracted from the packaging anyways.

Inside is a hair dryer. The exact make and model as the one on her Christmas list. It’s sweet and practical and exactly what she wanted. And yet… there’s a small part of her that is a little sad. She’d grown so accustomed to his thoughtful gifts that were slightly out of the box in his own quirky way. But she later reprimands herself for thinking that way. At least she got a gift from him. At least he was so kind as to get her something she wanted. At least she has him. It’s not too bad, and sure it’s no engagement ring or mindful gift but having him should be enough. So why does she feel like she’s nearing her breaking point?

Their fourth Christmas together is much, much different. It’s just the three of them again but this time… this time there’s a silver band on her left hand, the diamond glinting every time it catches a stream of light.

She had worried for weeks leading up to December that this Christmas was going to be just like the last ones, another year of engagement with no ring, no sign of commitment from Shawn. But he had surprised her, like he always did, with the best gift of all. They had done it, actually gotten married, standing on that pier. She was bruised and battered, they hadn’t slept in hours and their officiant was a criminal. It was unconventional all right but she wouldn’t change it for the world.

This Christmas she was spending it with her husband. The word still made her giddy and she didn’t know if she’d ever grow tired of referring to Shawn as that. She certainly hoped she wouldn’t.

They’re huddled around the Christmas tree, all three of them decked out in matching red flannel pajamas- Shawn’s idea. Gus comments for the third time that day (and probably the twentieth time since they got married) that he’s going to move out soon, give the newlyweds some space but she just shakes her head, placing a hand on his knee and telling him that he can stay as long as he needs. He is family after all.

Shawn nearly chucks his gift at Gus who in turn shoots him a dirty look. The expression quickly falls, however, when he unwraps it. It’s a beautiful portrait of the three of them sitting on the couch and laughing at a movie. Shawn grins, nudging Gus’ arm, and tells him how even when he moves out, he’ll always be family and more than welcome. She wholeheartedly agrees.

He grabs her gift next, it’s small and flat but a grin bursts across his face as he opens it. A Wonder Woman comic sits in his hands- the first comic they ever bought together- its cover signed by Gal Godot herself. She doesn’t tell him that she waited three hours in line to get that signed or went to 18 different comic book shops to find that specific issue. Inside is a note card from Juliet telling him how much she appreciates his friendship and Shawn has to gingerly take the comic book away from him before he bursts into tears.

And when he hugs them both, she doesn’t mind his sobbing or the slight awkwardness of the embrace. Instead, she thinks that part of her is going to miss living with her husband’s best friend- no- her brother-in-law.

Gus’s gift to her is equally as sweet. It’s a coin, carved with the words Detective Juliet O’Hara-Spencer, and she wonders when he had time to add that last bit or if he had known all along. Regardless, she’s just thankful to share something so special with him.

Shawn slides her his gift after she finishes thanking Gus, a small dopey smile on his face. The wrapping is neater this year but it still points out at the occasional odd angle and too much tape was involved. She gasps as she unwraps it, revealing a green snuggie- the perfect excuse for warm cuddles. It’s soft against her skin and she immediately slips her arms into it, allowing the fabric to encase her small frame. It’s a bit large and he waggles his eyebrows as he tells her it’s made for two. Even if it wasn’t, they’d surely find a way to share it.

Hours later, when they’re all piled onto the couch watching Gremlins, the snuggie wrapped around her and Shawn, she thinks this is the best Christmas in San Francisco yet.

Japan. I travel a lot and it’s been on my list for a while, I would really want to go to the Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli theme park, if it ever opens that is. I would bring my best friend, Layla. I also would love to go to Amsterdam again.

If I had the energy to fully wrench my life in a completely different direction I would like to become a professional scuba diver and study the ocean. I already am a scuba diver, but it’s a hobby and not something I’m able to do very often at all.
