Viral (2016)

Released only 7 years ago, the world has changed so much since Viral was made it practically feels like a period piece but that actually works in its favor.

The news is warning people of the “worm flu” as it spreads throughout the world. Caused by a parasite, those affected develop a voracious appetite before vomiting blood and collapsing from severe seizures. When the worm flu forces their town to quarantine, teenage sisters Stacey (Analeigh Tipton) and Emma (Sofia Black-D’Elia) are left alone. Their father, (Michael Kelly) was on his way to pick up their mother from the airport and the new security measures mean they have no idea when they'll be able to return.

You can see what I meant earlier about the film feeling like it comes from a different era. Viral, was made before the COVID-19 epidemic and one of its more interesting aspects is how accurately it predicted what would happen. The Drakefords have recently moved to the area. While Stacey has made plenty of friends and has a boyfriend, CJ (Colson Baker), Emma is only starting to feel at home in her new school. After the teens are left home alone and learn school is closed indefinitely, they go to a party with all of their classmates. Normally, Emma wouldn’t be interested, but Evan (Travis Tope), the handsome neighbor she’s befriended, will be there. They don’t see the imposed curfew or the government warnings as anything to take too seriously. There, a few people wear masks but most don’t and wouldn’t you know it, someone infected shows up, spreading a plague that could’ve been contained to who knows how many households. The sickness in this film is obviously more extreme and dangerous than the one we went through but several scenes in the film feel eerily familiar. Government vehicles pass through the streets, blasting warnings to everyone to stay indoors, respect the curfews and report infected individuals. When people die from the flu, everyone in the house is taken away by people in hazmat suits and their house is marked so the CDC knows how many people were taken. Food packets are distributed to each household so people don’t have to leave their homes for any reason.

Another of the film’s strengths is the relationship between the characters. Stacey and Emma feel like real sisters. The actresses have some nice little bits of dialogue to help us understand who they are even whether they’re talking about normal subjects like school and boys or they're contemplating the danger they now face. Stacey may be more outgoing, she may tease her little sister often but she’s looking out for her. The scenes of normal interactions make you understand why, when one becomes infected, the other refuses to leave her behind.

Once the worm flu comes home, some of the weaknesses in the story creep in. We're reminded that this is a horror film - not a dramatic thriller set in a frightening time - with a scare that turns out to be just a dream. Towards the end of the picture, the sisterly bond on display strains credibility. Remember, this worm flu is not like Covid-19, where it’s just infectious and potentially fatal. The disease in this movie is directly compared to Toxoplasma gondii, the parasite that removes rodents’ fear of cats. It alters the way people act and can make them murderous. When your loved one manages to escape the room you’ve locked them in, it’s not so they can hang out with their friends or go buy that cheeseburger they’ve been craving; it’s so they can kill and/or spread the parasite. If they run into a dark, abandoned house, only an insane person would follow them and that's before we see the dead bodies and the open door leading towards the dark basement. It’s the ultimate “don’t go in there!” scene. In its defense, it leads to a great, final reveal about the worm flu. Except for one scene where we get to see it take control of a hostile neighbor, the details about the parasitic worm are kept vague, which keeps it scary. That final reveal raises all sorts of questions as it makes you realize how big of a nightmare these characters are living in.

Minus a couple of moments where the characters toss away their survival skills like a dirty face mask, Viral is an enjoyable horror thriller when it's not trying too hard to go for the typical scares. I'd rate it higher if it wasn't for another movie that "predicted" the pandemic more frighteningly and accurately, Contagion. Between the two, that's the better movie. (October 29, 2024)

J gives me classic just cheese vibes. They rarely eat pizza tho, it's not healthy and J is very particular about being a health nut.

Uma is a vegetarian! They like mushrooms and peppers.

Wanda isn't picky, she likes all kinds of pizza. Tho pineapple isn't her preference, it's something she likes (for some reason).

Kai doesn't like cheese lol they're insanely picky with food. They'd just eat bacon and bread.

Travis' preference is jalapeno. He likes his food very spicy.

#158 Esperar hasta que se haga de noche (2015)

En 1946 se cometieron 5 crímenes aberrantes en el pequeño pueblo de Texarkana, estos crímenes se dieron a lo largo de tres meses donde asesinó a parejas de amantes que se encontraban practicando relaciones sexuales. El asesino enmascarado fue llamado "El asesino fantasma". Hubo un detenido que acabó encarcelado durante 30 años y como los crímenes cesaron, no se preocuparon en investigar más, aunque lo cierto es que nunca se supo quién fue el asesino.

Ahora nos encontramos en el 2014, y Jami (Addison Timlin) tiene una cita con Corey (Spencer Treat Clark), está en su último año de instituto y después de una vida bastante dura, esta parecía su recompensa. Ya que nunca se sintió ni atractiva ni popular y él es el cuaterback del equipo de futbol del instituto y va a ganar una beca con ello.

Van al cine a ver la película que se hizo años atrás sobre los crímenes ocurridos en el pueblo por el asesino fantasma, allí Jami se siente aburrida y sobrepasada por tanta gente en el autocine disfrutando de un dolor que fue real, y le pide a Corey irse.

Ambos van a una zona apartada para tener más intimidad, allí mientras se besan Jami ve a alguien entre los árboles, esa persona lleva un saco en la cabeza y les mira atentamente. Corey le resta importancia, pero pronto son atacados.

El asesino le pide a Corey que se tire al suelo y a Jami que sé de la vuelta y que no mire, ahí apuñala a Corey en la columna varias veces, hasta que Jami se gira y empieza a huir despavorida.

El asesino la alcanza, después de que se caiga varias veces, y en lugar de matarla le dice que haga al pueblo recordar a Mary, y se escapa dejándola con vida.

Ninguno de los policías le hace el mínimo caso a Jami, el único que demuestra tener algo de humanidad es Lillia (Joshua Leonard) que se ofrece para ir con el coche oficial a vigilar la casa donde Jami vive con su abuela Lillian.

Los siguientes en morir son la pareja de amantes del militar y su novia, que son asesinados cruelmente en un motel, él decapitado y ella perseguida hasta su coche para morir apuñalada.

Después de esto llega el Ranger Morales al pueblo (Anthony Anderson) ya hay demasiadas cosas similares a los crímenes de 1946, ahora saben que la siguiente pareja de amantes morirá apuñalado con un cuchillo unido a un trombón y de un tiro.

La ola de crímenes continúa con el asesinato de otra pareja de jóvenes, tal y como pasó en 1946, el asesino fantasma es como un camión, entra en los sitios atravesando ventanas de una patada, es pesado, lento, pero siempre te alcanza, es cruel y tiene una fuerza sobre humana.

Jami buscando información en la biblioteca conoce a Nick (Travis Tope), que fue con ella a clase en el instituto, se enamoran locamente por sus circunstancias tan oscuras. Ella perdió a sus padres en un accidente de coche donde solo ella sobrevivió, y él tenía un padre alcohólico y abusivo que muere y su madre pierde la cabeza acabando en una institución mental.

Ambos investigan y dan con el hijo del director de la primera película que les arroja sobre la identidad del verdadero criminal, ellos no le creen porque ya está viejo y con problemas mentales y siguen su investigación.

Otra pareja es asesinada mientras mantienen relaciones y el pueblo se vuelve loco, ahora el asesino es más fuerte, más cruel y tiene más víctimas que el de 1946.

Jami es aceptada en la universidad de California y su abuela le indica que van a salir del pueblo ya, esta es la oportunidad que necesitan para escapar del pueblo, y tienen familia allí que les ayudará a establecerse, Jami no se quiere separar de Nick, y él se cuela en su casa para acostarse con ella esquivando a Foster que está en la puerta.

Bien temprano Lillian y Jami se despiden de Foster y le dicen que se van a ir a California que es el momento de abandonar el pueblo, él les desea buena suerte, pero cuando ambas paran en una gasolinera para repostar y tomar algo para el camino se escuchan tiros, Jami sale y ve que han disparado a un vecino y han asesinado a su abuela y al chico de la gasolinera, coge el arma del bolso de su abuela y sale corriendo campo a través, perseguida por el lento pero letal asesino.

Jami sigue teniendo pesadillas con la muerte de Corey y huyendo traumatizada por el asesinato de su abuela, se tropieza en las vías del tren con el cuerpo desmembrado de Nick, totalmente desubicada y desorientada, huye. Corre y corre, pero se da cuenta de que tiene que esquivar muchas veces al asesino, hasta que cae y se da cuenta de que hay dos asesinos vestidos iguales yendo a por ella.

Hay dos asesinos, uno es Foster, el policía que la ha estado cuidando, es el nieto del asesino inicial que les indicó el hijo del director y al que decidieron no creer y el otro no es otro que Corey. Nunca fue asesinado, fue un paripé por parte de los dos criminales, uno por pura venganza y Corey porque no quería ser un paria que jamás saliera del pueblo, quería tener oportunidades y no una vida establecida por sus padres, donde no ser libre.

Sin pensárselo demasiado, Foster dispara a Corey y lo mata, y busca inculpar a Jami y a Corey de ser una pareja de asesinos que se puso de acuerdo y que acabaron asesinándose el uno a la otra, pero justo cuando intenta matar a Jami está le dispara dos veces en la cabeza con el arma de su abuela.

En el prólogo descubrimos que el cuerpo de Foster nunca fue encontrado y que se cree que se lo tragó el pantano, alimentando así la leyenda del asesino.

Jami se va a la universidad de California para estudiar literatura creativa, buscando un nuevo futuro donde nadie la conoce, allí vuelve a casa de noche y una sombra la sigue de cerca, parece ser el asesino fantasma acechándola de nuevo.
