Ilsa at one point pulls a GUN on Rick as she desperately tries to convince him to hand over a pair of transitvisas that will allow her and Laszlo to escape to Portugal and then the USA.

Turns out the romance is actually kind of tragic because it's more of a remembered romance than a present one. They're all firm on that they want Ilsa and Laszlo to stay together, it's just that there's a lot of unresolved feelings--mainly hurt feelings--and these people just seriously need some therapy, but y'know, it's the middle of WWII so that ain't happening. But by the end of the film it all gets resolves in their own way, and though they have to separate again and rush to freedom, there's understanding.

The Nazis? At one point they just... lose an impromptu sing-off at Rick's bar, where they sing a German battle song and a bunch of French people sing the Marseillaise (the French anthem). And IMMEDIATELY they are shown just how PETTY they are, bunch of sore LOSERS, as THIS is the thing that causes them to CLOSE DOWN THE BAR. The reason they give? "There's gambling going on here," their leader says, RIGHT as he is getting paid out for gambling there himself.

Nazis and other fascists aren't just evil. They are pathetic. This film really understands that.

I love also that it ends with Rick just murdering the Nazi leader and the Vichy French policeman just going like "oh no! call the doctor, he's been shot!" and just not telling anybody who actually shot him. Rick just gets away with it. Bloody stellar.

It’s basically about two lovers who were driven apart by circumstance and distance and months later reconnecting when they find each other again. The romance feels more mature because there’s more backstory. These are not teenagers falling in love. These are people who have loved and lost people before. They’ve known each other for years. They care about each other. At first it looks like the man is obsessed with her. Then you see her being obsessed with him. They don’t want to lose each other again, but in the present they put up emotional barriers because of that fear of losing their love again, and that’s part of what creates drama. It’s not miscommunication. It’s communicating a lot, but through a lens of hurt and of desperately wanting to love each other again.

Plus it’s also about resisting Nazis.
