I got the Drrr!! Side stories novel and well, great, now I have to talk about transman!Shizuo ┐⁠(⁠ ⁠∵⁠ ⁠)⁠┌ what a shame.

Just imagine Shizuo already feeling insecure enough about his violent outbursts, he didn't need gender dysphoria on top of it. Of course he didn't actually know what any of that was he just knew girls weren't supposed to act that way. His gender was probably a target of the bullying. "That's not a girl, that's a gorilla." He quickly abandoned feminine clothing, he felt better in his body that way but the bullying didn't get better.

I think we can safely say that he has good parents and a good home life, but he still worried about disappointing his parents. Not only did they have to deal with his monstrous anger and strength, he didn't feel like a girl. He respects his parents so much that the idea of even chopping his hair off and hiding his body felt wrong.

By middle school he confides in Kasuka, who ended up giving him a hair cut. Their mother panicked and for a moment Shizuo thought she was mad that he would do such a thing, she always said how pretty his hair was. She ends up telling him, "If you wanted a haircut you should have just said so" and made an appointment.

He's still wearing the girls' uniform and tries to adhere to the gender norms. He causes enough problems, the least he can do is appreciate the body he was given no matter how uncomfortable going through puberty was.

Maybe puberty hit him too early and he was offered puberty blockers. He was hesitant and was gauging whether or not his parents would be upset but he could tell they really wanted him to make the choice he wanted.

So one day after a fight he gets pulled along by Tom and they're chatting. The conversation is awkward. Cutting his hair was one thing but bleaching it seemed entirely different. He didn't really understand why but he ended up "coming out" to Tom and was genuinely confused by the concept of transgender because up until now he only understood the general distaste that existed around crossdressers. He knew what gay and lesbian was and he never really thought much about his own preference. What was Tom talking about?

It was the first time being told something like "you don't seem much like a girl" felt like a compliment and validated him.

After that he bleached his hair and wore the boys' uniform. After that his parents brought up his treatment, they had taken notice of the changes in their daughter over the years and could tell he was ashamed to bring it up to them. They used the topic as a way to show they supported him no matter what and he managed to open up a little bit and they bought him a binder, switched words and pronouns.

Hanging around Tom really helped him come to terms with himself and slowly he shook the belief that he had to be a girl.

By highschool the rumors about him spread so much and altered that none of it was a problem. He could just be a guy.

But then there was Izaya. The rumors Izaya heard, he was expecting the monster to indeed be a girl. When they met, for a split second Shizuo had a fear, like if this person wanted to he could ruin the success Shizuo had with his transition and the public perception of him. But Izaya just frowned as he looked him up and down, "Ah so the monster really is a guy."

Shizuo was angry, of course, everything about this guy pissed him off. He was pretty sure he was actually being insulted too. Still there was a part of him that was absolutely ecstatic. Fighting with Izaya somehow ended up being a gender affirming activity.

He absolutely hates when Shinra says stuff like that though.

Working on a fic rn that is killing me, I GOTTA talk about it. Imagine ftm Izaya being asked by Shinra and Celty to be their surrogate bc their options are limited and they assume he wouldn't be able to get attached to the baby bc of his aspd and general disposition (unfair assumption on their part) Izaya only agrees bc he can't stand the idea of disappointing Shinra and proceeds to go through the mental anguish of dysmorphia and carrying a baby that's not even his that he wants to love so much

i. man. ive been presenting this ask to my friends all day because this is such a good fucking idea. this is perhaps the best drr fic of all time by my personal ranking (which also happens to be the correct ranking) and i thought id give you a couple fun little bits of informed mation that could possibly help you with this fic :) one of them is surrogacy related the other is aspd related

SO!!! the first thing i did was show my fiance and i said, well, izaya could keep the baby if he wanted, surrogacy laws are in his favor. but then i thought..... are they? because i was basing that off surrogacy laws in the us..... so i googled it!

surrogacy in japan is um, Extremely Controversial! first off, surrogates do have legal guardianship of the baby, the parents who want the baby have to go thru a formal adoption process, and if it goes to court, courts would most likely side with the surrogate.

BUT!!!!!! the welfare of the child is explicitly stated to be the first and foremost concern. at the end of the day, a married couple could very well win over a single man, especially a single man with antisocial personality disorder, if his diagnosis is on record anywhere. (of course this is all dependent on whether or not izaya GOES to court, and if celty can keep her helmet on and pose as a mute human woman)

either way, this all but confirms that shinra would be izaya's obgyn. imagine at every checkup, shinra is cooing over how well his baby is doing, completely oblivious to how upset izaya is <3 did u know that if you're trans and you get pregnant, you have to stop taking your hrt? too much testosterone can cause miscarriages- very high levels of natural T is actually why i'm infertile </3 so that can be a little extra angst for izaya~ <3

it's..... kind of like the aspd version of a pwbpd's favorite person? kind of? not really

it's like. sometimes, for one person, the aspd will not be aspding. they're... literally the exception to how your symptoms work. things like empathy and yeah even remorse will work within like, normal operating levels. it's kind of weird tbh and kind of distressing? like, since you're not used to these emotions being there, especially with how strong they are, you have no way to cope with them. it sucks major ass and while it can being people closer together, it also sucks major ass. like.... if you never felt remorse before, suddenly feeling remorse over something you commonly do just because you did it to one Specific Person, leaves you with this very strong, very bad emotion, that you have no way to cope with!

and its not just remorse too, things like empathy fire off at full cylinders, so like... if ur used to just using cognitive empathy and logicing out things, imagine how much itd suck to suddenly be ass blasted by Functioning Normally Affective Empathy

anyway there's this one lady on tiktok who has aspd, and she talks about aspd symptoms a lot. she has a young child, and that child is her exception

get what i'm getting at here? ;) imagine izaya going thru all this then, while already distressed, dysphoric, and hormonal, shit like EMPATHY and strong STRONG emotional ties started kicking in wrt his baby and now he has to deal with extremely strong emotions he is not used to!

(and in case ur wondering, yes i do have exceptions, but who it exactly IS changes from time to time and the feeling ebbs away over time too so sometimes i don't have one)

Ok so I was re reading some over your drrr novel rereads, (and I know that homophobia isn’t uncommon for Narita), but I keep hearing abt how Narita made kyohei homophobic (and also misogynistic on occasion) but I’ve never read the novels and was wondering if you’d go into what exactly went down??? (because I really like your commentary!)

(Side note: tbh making a character like kyohei homophobic just feels like friendly fire cuz there’s no way he isn’t bi)

The gist of it was some comments he made during the saika arc. one about niekawa being a "queen" (as in a gay man, not a drag queen) for saying he wanted to love shizuo while under saikas possession and the strong reaction everyone had to erika suggesting shizuo and izaya were in love. There may have been another random comment from him somewhere? He occasionally makes comments about women that could be read as misogynistic or chivalrous depending on translation, tone, or interpretation. Youre absolutely right tho- kadota is all but canonically bi... Tell me hes not attracted to chikage. (Narita is great at accidentally writing trans and queer characters. Butch Hartman moment.) There are a few untasteful lines like that in the novels that dont make it to the anime (at least in my memory). Theres one later in the series when shizuo tells tom hes only ever been told i love you by one woman(saika) but he wasnt even sure she was really a woman, and Tom asks what shizuo means by that and asks whether he frequents "gay clubs and transsexual bars" (wording could vary by translation). It isnt said in a judgmental or hateful manner to my memory. The novels arent like.. Intensely thematically homophobic or anything, theyre more of a reflection of Japan in 2004- nothing expressed is particularly egregious for the era, youd see and hear worse on any American sitcom circa 2004. (Theres also a line that heavily implies masaomi has slept with one of the drs taking care of saki more than once. I dont have anything intelligent to add there other than I was genuinely shocked to read it.)
