The Greek Interpreter
Another one from Memoirs.
Diogenes was a Greek philosopher of the Cynicism school, best known for his unsocial behaviour.
London had a lot of private clubs at this time for wealthier men, catering to all tastes and politics. Pall Mall in particular was, and still is, famous for them.
Joining these clubs generally required other members to propose and second you; being "unclubbable" meant no-one else liked you enough to let you in their club.
Watson should stop fat-shaming people!
The Diogenes Club, which has turned up in a bunch of other works, is believed to have been based on the Athenaeum Club, which is still there.
Wandsworth Common is a green area in SW London, not the biggest still present in the city by any means,
Clapham Junction, actually in Battersea, was and still is a major railway interchange with trains going to Victoria and Waterloo in particular. Major as in having over 100 trains an hour use it, the busiest station for interchanges in the UK and the only station there with more interchanges than people starting or ending their journey there.
The Daily News was a 'radical' paper originally founded in 1846 by Charles Dickens of all people, who was its first editor. It eventually ceased publication in 1930 with its merger with the Daily Chronicle to become The News Chronicle, which eventually folded, very strangely given its liberal editorial line, into the Daily Mail.
Legations were a lower form of diplomatic mission, below an embassy; only Great Powers could send and receive full ambassadors - and historically only monarchies; France by this point was a republic and so of course was the USA. Greece, as a small kingdom at the time, was not Embassy worth. The last legations became full embassies in the 1990s.
The Metropolitan Police District covered a large area outside of London too, including Beckenham and even areas that would not become part of Greater London in 1965. It now matches the Greater London boundaries.
Beckenham, then in Kent, had become a full town already by this point due to rapid expansion fuelled by the railway. The main station at Beckenham Junction also serves as the eastern terminus of the Tramlink network, London's revived tram system.
Another case of "I've run out of word count - let's have the villains die off-screen!"

Tramlink on this Day in 2013
It was a bright July afternoon when I exposed this view of a brightly decorated purple, red and green tram on the Croydon Tramlink in London. By this time the modern rapid transit system had been rebranded as ‘Tramlink’, which is a fancy name for the electric streetcar system serving the Croydon area of London. July 26, 2015, London, UK. Exposed using my Canon EOS-7D fitted with a 28-135mm lens…

Wandering the Wandle - Part 1
I was chatting with friends in May and mentioned that I was planning on walking the Wandle trail after seeing this article on MyLondon (I think Google pushed the article to me via their news service) - https://www.mylondon.news/lifestyle/beautiful-walk-named-one-londons-26781996 - I was surprised to find that other people wanted to walk it too! Before I knew it four of us were planning the expedition - although due to scheduling issues it turned out that on the day - it was just me and my good friend and fearsome Croydonite Andy that did the trail.
I made my way from my home to East Croydon station and stopped for a cheeky breakfast muffin and cup of coffee at the rather busy for 10:30am Wetherspoons pub on Croydon High Street.
Suitably fortified we made our way along the High Street - past the remnants of busy commerce now left with shuttered up shops and occasional bright spots of casinos, betting shops and newsagents - like a parade of gappy teeth of habitual drunkard. Andy regaled me we talk of his past when as a teenager he would visit the small outpost of the Forbidden planet (miraculously still there) or the roleplaying game shop to spend his pocket money. We continued further down the High Street and past the sight of the burning of the House of Reeves shop in the 2011 London Riots.
We walked along the tram line and observed that Croydon was forged by it's transport links - the brutal dual carriageway and tramlinks cutting through it. Andy told me that Judge Dredd co-creator Carlos Ezquerra spent some time in Croydon during the 1970 and that it is thought that this inspired Mega-City One. We past some grafitti and felt like we were going in the right direction.
And here it was the start of the Wandle in Croydon's Wandle Park - this was culverted in Andy's youth only to be opened up and the once dull park transformed into a haven for wildlife.
From here we crossed the Purley Way and found Waddon Ponds (https://goo.gl/maps/LqDa1mds5GKCmH989) - these are delightful although the map makes them look slightly phallic.
We found some juvenile moor hens hanging out and we discussed the state of politics. The evidence of mills were present.
The route took us along the Wandle - which was quite shallow and stream like - but looked clean and healthly - suburban houses backing on to it. Meadows filled with wildflowers suggested that we might not be in London anymore and in fact be in some bucolic paradise.
We carried on towards the lovely Beddington Park (https://goo.gl/maps/VfWuSASS7vgu757X9) - which was next to the Andy's school - WallingTon County Grammar School - I was particularly taken with the alley known as Bunker's alley for obvious reasons.
Rather pretty - a old stone bridge that Andy would run over as part of his cross-country runs and there was talk of some kind of imitation rite - an assault course type run that involved fording the river. We had to wait for the volunteer army with their wheelbarrows on a narrow bridge. There were geese and a fun island that Andy informed me the big kids would throw smaller kid's rucksacks on to to torment them.
We met and friendly dog:
Okay - that's it for Part 1 - tune in later for Part 2...

incorrect. 11 (not ten) underground lines plus six overground lines creates 17. add the Elizabeth Line hybrid heavy/metro line for 18, and add the Docklands lightrail and Croydon tramlink for a nice round 20
so they used to have the official london suburban rail lines all in one colour on the map as ‘london overground’, but it was confusing for everyone because it was actually six different lines without individual names or anything
so they’ve split them up, and today they’ve announced all the lines’ official-sounding names. and yknow. they’re okay. they needed names and now they’ve got names
but i’ve got one small massive problem
the Gospel Oak to Barking LINe, which didn’t have a name until today, everyone called The Goblin, or the Goblin Line. but they’ve just called it the ‘Suffragette Line’. like they were cool and all but. it’s honestly disgraceful that they didn’t honour the Goblin. outrage

New map project! I can’t say I’m looking forward to labeling this (I look at Euston, Bethnal Green, and Tower Gateway and I scream), but I’m definitely looking forward to living in London, which is a thing I will be doing starting this fall! :D
Also, why yes, this *is* topologically accurate and far more geographically accurate than the official map; thank you for noticing! :P

if north and south london were flipped then kent would be a zone 6 station on the metropolitan and district lines, and oxford circus would have one overground train every 30 minutes and otherwise only be used to connect to the watford tramlink
