Yi Peng Lantern Festival, Chiang Mai, Thailand

As dusk falls, Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second-largest city, will be filled with light and magic for the splendid Yi Peng Festival. This deeply symbolic festival represents the act of letting go of negativity and opening up to new beginnings, and is celebrated during the full moon of the second month of the ancient Lanna calendar. It highlights the release of the “khom loi”, the iconic floating paper lanterns that, as they rise, transform the night sky into an ocean of golden lights. In addition, the streets are decked out in vibrant parades, traditional dances and exquisite festive decorations, creating a truly unique atmosphere.

Interestingly, Indonesia also have something like this:
youtube
I am not overly surprised, we're neighboring countries after all. What made it interesting is the Rangkuk Alu dance does not originate in (Indonesian) province that's right next to the Philippines (North Sulawesi). Instead it came from Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, where one will need to cross a lot more oceans to reach from the Philippines compared to from Philippines to North Sulawesi.
Some times I wish somebody would do some chronological anthropologic/ethnic mapping of the South East Asian countries - just so we can see which areas are closely (or genetically) linked.
Also I'm surprised no one in the current government (of either countries) have noticed this and maybe do some collaboration or something fun.

Around the world today, the penumbra of the rising of the first sun of May is lined with onlookers and wellwishers, eyes on the eastern horizon to catch the first glimpse of a new season.
Because in our hearts, this is how summer returns to the northern hemisphere; this sun a baton passed in the annual relay as the south prepares for what winter may bring.
Among our number, where the hilltops flatten enough for people to trust their feet in the gloom, for over a century now morris dancers have set out in the fading dark to dance in the dawn, for the same reason we do anything: because it's what we do. That's all tradition is, after all.
And every year, alongside the bells, a passage from Terry Pratchett's Hogfather rings in my mind.
"The sun would have risen just the same, yes?"
NO.
"Oh, come on. You can't expect me to believe that. It's an astronomical fact."
THE SUN WOULD NOT HAVE RISEN.
...
"Really? Then what would have happened, pray?"
A MERE BALL OF FLAMING GAS WOULD HAVE ILLUMINATED THE WORLD.
And so, every year, follow the sound of bells and sticks, the chorus of voices singing Hal And Tow, and you'll find a bunch of knackered weirdos in the middle of nowhere in daft hats and a chill breeze, but proud of what they've done.
After all, we just made the sun rise.

The Zaouli dance: A mesmerizing blend of rhythm, tradition, and artistry. More than a performance, it’s a cultural heartbeat of the Guro people of Côte d’Ivoire. 🌍✨

me, last year: a lion dance au would be cool, but ugh, it's hard to draw
me, this year: eh, let's give it a shot.

here are the links to the photos i referenced because NO WAY am i drawing all this without references 😂
one-leg stand
platform jump

the rough beginnings of a new au! if you wanna hear me yap about my ideas (nothing set in stone just yet), it'll be under the cut along with the full page spread
Tumblr media
ideas:
the DCA are a trio of lion dance performers, where Sun and Moon are the dancers and Eclipse is the one-man band
Sun and Moon alternate who is the head and who is the tail. When Sun is the head, their routines are more artful and they show off their kung-fu techniques. Whereas when Moon is the head, their routines are more playful and they engage with the audience more.
Eclipse has 4 arms to play the drums, the cymbals, and the gong. (maybe he has more than 4 arms? sometimes there needs to be more cymbals)
characters:
Eclipse is the gentle anchor of the trio. He acts as the mediator for Sun and Moon.
Sun is the sassy theater kid, who's always insisting they practice more to get the routine right. ("Mm-mm! Once more. From the top, With talent.")
Moon is the mischievous little gremlin. The performances give him an outlet, but he's just as mischievous out-of-costume as he is in-costume.
Y/N, the lion handler and, therefore, the DCA's handler (maybe they inherited the troupe or the kung-fu school?)
mmmmmmaybe someone else? i dunno.
dunno if this will be a full AU with a story and everything, but it's a cute idea

Papercraft Princess Tutu! 🦢
Tutu was the very first papercraft I ever made, years ago (so many years that I've lost my scan of that first papercraft, which breaks my heart a little ;o;), so all the Tutus I make have a special place in my heart. It always feels a little nostalgic to make her, as well as exciting to see the changes in how I approach the project. This time, I tried adding a lace border to resemble a stage curtain!

The Bear Dance is an ancient pagan custom in Romania. Every year around Christmas, groups of people dress up in bear costumes and parade the streets dancing. They’re accompanied by drummers and singing "bear tamers”.
This custom dates back to the pre-Christianity era when it was believed that bears could ward off misfortunes and bring good luck.
