Made a little list in my journal to track this:
Tumblr media
Thought this would be a great way to prep a reading list for once (instead of ignoring my tbr and reading everything but those books), so here's my reading list for next year:
Literary Fiction: James by Percival Everett Since I have to read Huck Finn for my degree next semester I thought it'd be fun to read this retelling from Jim's point of view after. (Coincidentally also good for my yearly goal of reading all the Booker shortlisteds that I never manage)
Short Story Collection: Make Something Up: Stories You Can't Unread by Chuck Palahniuk I've been wanting to read more horror, and what could be better than a collection described as "disgusting and all around offensive."
Sequel: Less Is Lost by Andrew Sean Greer I loved Less' balance of humour and emotion so much, it's the sort of queer book that I think is few and far between, so I'm excited to finally get around to its sequel.
Childhood Favourite: Kinderen van Moeder Aarde by Thea Beckman There's no English translation of these books, but if you speak Dutch or German I can't recommend them enough. The Thule Trilogy is about the conflict between a Utopian trading society and a militaristic nation and it's THE best children's series ever, I love it so much. (Beckman's whole oeuvre is phenomenal, but these are her best imo)
20th Century Speculative Fiction: Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler An author who needs no introduction. She's THE speculative fiction writer who else was I going to read.
Fantasy: Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice I've been meaning to get around to this for quite a while, and I don't love high fantasy generally, so I thought this fit the prompt well enough.
Published before 1950: You Can't Go Home Again by Thomas Wolfe What it says on the tin. A novel about rediscovering your your home, the places you grew up in, how they change you, and how you change without them. Published in 1940, a real tome at a whopping 711 pages.
Indie Publisher: De Havermelkelite by Jonas Hooyman (Translation of title: The Oatmilk Elite) Published by Dutch independent publisher Das Mag, who started out in magazines, and since I myself run a magazine I wanted to support them. The book is a journalism piece about yuppies and gentrification in Amsterdam post-2008 financial crisis.
Manga: No Longer Human by Junji Ito An adaptation of Osamu Dazai's novel of the same name, about a man who constantly puts up a facade towards the outside world because he cannot connect to himself or other people.
Animal cover: Ghostroots by 'Pemi Aguda A short story collection set in Lagos, Nigeria that examines the family unit, and how we are haunted by it. Themes right up my alley.
Set in a country I've never visited: Little Rot by Akwaeke Emezi Also set in Nigeria, this is a book about sex, corruption, and lies. Five people trying to navigate the dangerous underground of a city, what they'll do for, and to, each other.
Science Fiction: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick I don't know anything about Blade Runner, which is embarrassing. Remediating that this year.
2025 Debut: The Once and Future Me by Melissa Pace A psychological thriller about a woman who gets locked up in a psych ward when she travels back in time to 1950s America, and needs to find a way to get back to the future. This is the only one that wasn't already on my tbr, but oh well.
Memoir: Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell Part memoir, part travelogue, and all throughout an examination of poverty in two of the biggest metropolitan cities in the world.
Read a zine + make a zine: The Cellar Door Is an Open Throat by @tallahasseemp3 A zine about haunted houses. I've been toying with the idea of making a little herbarium and looking for poems to match them with for a while so I might do that.
Essay Collection: Film Form: Essays in Film Theory by Sergei Eisenstein I've had this collection on my shelves for a while and I love the montage movement, so this is a perfect occasion to read it.
2024 award winner: Brotherless Night by V.V. Ganeshananthan Winner of the Woman's Prize. A family saga about the Sri Lankan civil war.
Non-fiction: Butch Is a Noun by S. Bear Bergman I've been meaning to read more queer theory, and this has been on my tbr for years, so I'm happy to finally be getting around to it.
Social justice & activism: Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History by Sidney W. Mintz A look at colonialism and neo-colonialism connected to the sugar trade throughout history, and the contemporary colonial structures in place that support sugar as a commodity.
Romance: The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian Queer romcom in a historical setting.
Read and make a recipe: I will be trying to perfect my process for Bloch's croissants this year. (recipe published by Stefan Elias)
Horror: Woman, Eating by Claire Kalda More vampires! A deeply symbolic novel about a woman who must surpress her hunger, her violent urges.
Published in the aughts: After Dark by Haruki Murakami Sadly I didn't have any books on my tbr that embodied the spirit the aughts, but I've been meaning to get into Murakami for years, so this'll have to do.
Historical Fiction: Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy I love westerns, I love violence, I love genre subversion, SIGN ME UP.
Bookseller/Librarian Recommendation: Juno Loves Legs by Karl Geary The owner of my favourite bookshop said this was his favourite book to come out last year, and that he cried while reading it. Immediately sold I love sobbing. A coming of age novel about two working class Dublin teens.
2025 book bingo time 📚
want a completely arbitrary set of reading goals for 2025? want to try something new in your literary diet but don't know where to start? just like a challenge for the sake of a challenge? just love a good game of bingo?
boy do I have something for you!
Tumblr media
for anyone planning to participate, please know that I LOVE attention and talking about books, so I would be STOKED to be tagged on any and all updates about what you're reading or planning to read. I'm so, so excited to see all the different ways these prompts get filled, especially if and when they bring people away from the kinds of things they normally read. not to mention snag some new reading recs myself, hopefully!
and of course, I want to know whenever somebody gets a bingo - and ESPECIALLY if somebody fills the whole board! I don't have any prizes for you, but I can offer a sense of accomplishment :)
note that this is designed to be played as 1 book = 1 space, so even if you read, say, a fantasy graphic novel published in 1923 from an indie publisher that has a bat on the cover, you'd only cross off one space. I'm not a cop and I'm not in charge of what you read, so if it sparks more joy to check off multiple spaces per book then go nuts, but I am throwing that disclaimer out there.
wondering what some of these spaces mean? seeking a couple recommendations to get you started? no idea what a zine even is, let alone how to make one? worry not! I have a guide to all 25 prompts, including recommendations + an example of what I'll be reading throughout the year to fulfill each space. read on beneath the cut!
Literary Fiction: I find that a lot of people are reluctant to check out literary fiction, as it’s often written off as not being about anything but adultery and divorce. If this is you, I implore you to take a chance, acknowledge that adultery and divorce are compelling sometimes, and also remember that lit fic has a lot more to offer than that. At Writer’s Digest, Michael Woodson describes literary fiction as “less of a genre than a category,” which “focuses on style, character, and theme over plot.” My recommendations include Raven Leilani’s Luster, Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, and Melissa Broder’s Milk Fed.
I’ll be reading: Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar
2. Short Story Collection: You know, a bunch of short stories together in one book? It doesn’t get much more self-explanatory than that. Could be a collection of stories by a single author or an anthology—it’s up to you! I recommend checking out Mariana Enríquez’s The Dangers of Smoking in Bed (translated by Megan McDowell), Nalo Hopkinson’s Falling in Love With Hominids, and Kim Fu’s Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century.
I’ll be reading: Your Utopia by Bora Chung and translated by Anton Hur
3. A Sequel: It could be one that you’ve been meaning to get around to, one that’s not releasing in 2025, or the sequel to something you read to cross off another space on this very bingo sheet!
I’ll be reading: Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao, sequel to 2021’s Iron Widow
4. Childhood Favorite: Go back and read a book you loved as a child, tween, or teen! There’s no wrong answer here; anything from a YA novel to a picture book would be just lovely, and I can’t wait to see what people pick for this option! I’m not sure which of my old favorites I’ll be revisiting yet—should I go for the warm and fuzzy Casson Family series, or straight towards the mindfucky sci-fi of Interstellar Piggy? Or maybe I’ll go see how Artemis Fowl holds up...
5. 20th Century Speculative Fiction: For those not familiar with the term, speculative fiction can encapsulate science fiction, fantasy, and anything else that falls into the unreal. You’re spoiled for iconic choices here: the 20th century gave us Le Guin’s Left Hand of Darkness, Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale, Butler’s Parable of the Sower and Kindred, L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time, the beginning of Pratchett’s Discworld series, Diana Wynne Jones’ Howls’ Moving Castle, and countless others.
I’ll be reading: Dawn by Octavia E. Butler, love of my literary life 💜
6. Fantasy: Fantasy comes in a thousand different shades, from contemporary urban wizards with day jobs at the office to high fantasy spellslingers chasing dragons away from castles. Some examples I’ve adored are N.K. Jemisin’s The Killing Moon, C.L. Polk’s Witchmark, Fonda Lee’s Jade City, and Nghi Vo’s Empress of Salt and Fortune.
I’ll be reading: The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty
7. Published Before 1950: This one could not be more straightforward if I tried. You have all of human history (or at least, all the parts that have surviving literature), just not the last 75 years. Dig deep!
I’ll be reading: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, published in 1938
8. Independent Publisher: Did you guys know that just five publishing companies (Penguin Random House, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan Publishers, Simon & Schuster, and Hachette Book Group) are responsible for 80% of books published in the US each year, and 25% of books globally? Break away from the big five and see what some small presses are putting out! If you need some ideas about where to start, check out this list of nearly 300 independent publishers with notes on what kind of books they put out!
I’ll be reading: Taiwan Travelogue by Yáng Shuāng-zǐ and translated by Lin King, from Graywolf Press
9. Graphic Novel/Comic Book/Manga: Despite my personal obsession with Batman, the world of comic books is sooo much wider than Gotham City—or anything else that DC and Marvel have to offer. If superheroes aren’t your speed, check out the Southern gothic of Carmen Maria Machado and Dani Strips’ comic The Low, Low Woods, splash around in Kat Leyh’s graphic novel Thirsty Mermaids, or stop waiting for a new season of Dungeon Meshi and go read Ryoko Kui’s manga, translated to English by Taylor Engel.
I’ll be reading: The Fade, by Aabria Iyengar and Mari Costa
10. Animal on the Cover: Yes, yes, don’t judge a book by its cover—but do go find one with a critter on the cover and give it a read! Absolutely no other requirements here, get silly with it.
I’ll be reading: Shark Heart by Emily Habeck
11. Set in a Country You Have Never Visited: Fiction or nonfiction, doesn’t matter so long as it gives you a little glimpse of a country you’ve never visited in real life. If you’ve somehow visited every country currently recognized in the world, then I guess you get to go read something set in space.
I’ll be reading: A Magical Girl Retires by Park Seolyeon and Kim Sanho, translated by Anton Hur
12. Science Fiction: A genre just as diverse as fantasy, with a little something for everybody! I recommend Becky Chambers’ Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet for those who want to kiss an alien in the stars and Jessamine Chan’s The School for Good Mothers for those who want a surveillance state dystopia that hits much closer to home.
I’ll be reading: Womb City by Tlotlo Tsamaase
13. 2025 Debut Author: Read a book by someone who’s releasing their first book in 2025. Fic or nonfic, any genre, no further requirements. Not quite a free space, but pretty close!
I’ll be reading: Liquid: A Love Story by Mariam Rahmani, coming out March 11
14. Memoir: Per Wikipedia, a memoir is “any nonfiction narrative writing based on the author’s personal memories.” Some are funny, some are heartbreaking, some are both! I recommend Carman Maria Machado’s In the Dream House and Roxane Gay’s Hunger, because I tend to lean heartbreaking!
I’ll be reading: Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. Again, I like heartbreaking!
15. Read a Zine, Make a Zine: Not familiar with zines? No problem! Check out some of these digital archives for inspiration, and then craft your own zine with this simple guide (or do it your own way, I’m not in charge of you).
Internet Archives: https://archive.org/details/zines
Gay Zine Archive Project: https://gittings.qzap.org/
POC Zine Project: https://poczineproject.tumblr.com/
Library of Congress: https://www.loc.gov/collections/zine-web-archive/
16. Essay Collection: Like a short story collection, but it’s nonfiction now. Some of my favorites include Samantha Irby’s We Are Never Meeting in Real Life, Elaine Castillo’s How to Read Now, Aimee Nezhukhumatathil’s World of Wonders, and Cathy Park Hong’s Minor Feelings.
I’ll be reading: A Little Devil in America: In Praise of Black Performance by Hanif Abdurraqib
17. 2024 Award Winner: What award? Any award you like! And boy, there are tons to pick from. Any book that won any award in the year 2024 is free game. If you need some places to start looking, check out some of these:
Lambda Literary Awards, for excellence in LGBT literature: https://lambdaliterary.org/awards__trashed/2024-winners/
The Alex Awards, for adult books with crossover appeal for teen readers: https://www.ala.org/yalsa/alex-awards
Ignyte Awards, celebrating diversity in speculative fiction: https://ignyteawards.fiyahlitmag.com/2024-results/
Women's Prize for Fiction (self explanatory) https://womensprize.com/prizes/womens-prize-for-fiction/
Others: https://www.bookbrowse.com/awards/
I’ll be reading: Biography of X by Catherine Lacey, winner of the 2024 Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction
18. Nonfiction: Learn Something New: I know very little about archaeology, anthropology, or any other fields that involve studying ancient cities, but Annalee Newitz’s Four Lost Cities: A Secret History of the Urban Age was some of the most fun I had with nonfiction in 2024, because every page brought a brand new discovery. For 2025, find a nonfiction book about a topic you don’t know ANYTHING about, and learn something new!
I’ll be reading: Cooling the Tropics: Ice, Indigeneity, and Hawaiian Refreshment by Hi’ilei Julia Kawehipuaakahaopulani Hobart
19. Social Justice & Activism: Read a book about a social issue, the history of an activist movement, or brush up on a guiding philosophy or ideology. Arm yourself with knowledge, besties, because I have a feeling we’re going to need it! if you need a good place to start, why not try Angela Davis' Race, Women & Class, Mariame Kaba's We Do This 'Til We Free Us, or Molly Smith and Juno Mac's Revolting Prostitutes?
I’ll be reading: White Feminism: From Suffragettes to Influencers and Who They Leave Behind by Koa Beck
20. Romance Novel: Listen to me. Fucking listen to me. I mean a ROMANCE. NOVEL. Not a novel that incidentally has a romance in it. Romance novel, motherfucker. Go check out the romance section and have some whimsy as two people fall in love through the most contrived series of events ever conceived. If you really need a romance that makes you feel smart (that’s still sexy and messy as hell), try Akwaeke Emezi’s You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty.
I’ll be reading: Go Luck Yourself by Sara Raasche
21. Read and Make a Recipe: Could be a cookbook, could be a recipe you yoinked from the New York Times, could be something your grandparents lovingly wrote down by hand. Could be as complex or as simple as you like, just make something tasty! Some cookbooks I’ve enjoyed are Sohla El-Waylly’s Start Here, Dan Pashman’s Mission Impastable, and John Wang and Storm Garner’s The World Eats Here.
22. Horror: Slashers, zombies, haunted houses, creeping paranoia, you name it! It’s time to get spooky and scary with all kinds of things going bump in the night. Maybe this is the year to finally keep up with Dracula Daily? Not for me, I'm not doing that, but you could!
I’ll be reading: I Was A Teenage Slasher by Stephen Graham Jones
23. Published in the Aughts: A throwback, but not too far back. Read something published between 2000 and 2009. Maybe it’s time to finally get into Twilight? (For legal reasons, that’s a joke.)
I’ll be reading: The Sluts by Dennis Cooper, published in 2004
24. Historical Fiction: You know, fiction that takes place in a bygone era! Please remember, this isn’t just about reading a book that’s old; we have a separate prompt for that! This is about reading something that takes place in the past relative to the time it was written. Pride and Prejudice is historical to us, but was contemporary when Austen wrote it. Think of Brit Bennett's The Vanishing Half, Markus Zusak's The Book Thief, or history + a bit of fantasy in book's like R.F. Kuang's Babel.
I’ll be reading: The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon
Bookseller or Librarian Recommendation: This one is fun, and something I always like to do when I’m travelling and visiting a new bookstore. Ask a bookseller or librarian to recommend something they’ve liked, and check it out! If going in person isn’t feasible, many bookstores and libraries have staff picks on their websites, and the Indie Next List is a monthly list of independent booksellers’ favorite new releases.
I’ll be reading: The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse by Louise Erdrich, which I bought at Erdrich’s bookstore, Birchbark Books, this summer :)
lastly: tagging people who asked to be tagged to make sure they didn't miss this! @thebisexualwreckoning @perfunctoryperfusions @reallyinkyhands come get your bingo sheet!

Thoughts on WandaVision as I’m watching...
BEWARE OF SPOILERS, if you haven’t seen it yet, don’t read any of this, ok?
First episode: Paul and Elizabeth have such good comedy timing together, and lots of chemistry. I wish we could’ve seen so much more of them in the Avengers movies but I’m also glad we got the series.
Wanda and Vision being confused on what they’re doing, where they come from, when’s their anniversary makes you wonder in a magnificent way without giving right away the answers and that’s nice. It makes you think: was this Wanda? Was it someone else?
Wanda’s comment about Vision’s indestructible head and me chuckling at the moment she said it because ARE YOU SURE, HONEY?
It hurts a lil bit, let’s keep watching.
Second episode: Wanda telling Vision how this is their home now and she wants to fit in. Well shit.
It’s the second time I see ads, in the first episode it was a Stark Industries toaster. Now, it’s a Hydra watch... huh.
Everything being black and white except for the toy helicopter (red and yellow) and the blood stain (red) in Dottie’s hand.
Geraldine knowing her name when she shook Wanda’s hand.
Shit, so many questions so far and I haven’t finished watching the episode yet.
OK, OK, HOLD ON. I WAS STARTING TO FEEL THAT “FOR THE CHILDREN” WAS GOING TO BE IMPORTANT BECAUSE REPETITION AND THEN WANDA APPEARS PREGNANT. THE FUCK IS HAPPENING HERE.
Tumblr media
Who in hell is that beekeeper and why everything just rewinded and turned back into color after he appeared? AAAAAA.
The voice asking Wanda who’s doing this to her, shit.
Third episode: Let’s carry on, I need answers.
Not only the intro changed but also they changed decades. Everyone’s hair is styled differently, the clothing is and that song: “All great expectations lead to complications”... you’re gonna screw everyone over, ain’t ya?
“I can’t wait to be a proud papa-ya...” oh Vision.
Tumblr media
Wanda losing control over her powers because of the pregnancy, oh well darling, here we go...
Now Wanda wondering if their neighbors can tell who they really are and Vision starts to doubt it as well and it gets rewinded... darling, this is staged for sure. Everytime THEY are the ones about to figure it out something happens.
And Hydra has a soap commercial, why am I not surprised? They’re like roaches, get underneath everything.
The doctor’s comment about small towns being hard to escape says it all by itself.
WANDA HAVING TWINS AND REMEMBERING PIETRO. MY HEART HURTS.
Geraldine knowing Pietro was killed by Ultron, now that’s interesting. Her being new in town, having no home, having the symbol of whoever’s watching on Wanda and Vision. Inte-fucking-resting. Then her having to rush home aka being thrown out of the simulation.
Fourth episode: It starts off with the people coming back to life from the snap... shit, shiT, SHIT.
Oh so it was S.W.O.R.D watching over Wanda all along.
FUUUUCK, I JUST REMEMBERED CAPTAIN MARVEL WAS A THING AND MARIA RAMBEAU WAS CAROL’S FRIEND AND HER BABY GIRL WAS MONICA. OMB. AAAAA how I love it when everything starts to tie up.
Darcy Lewis, YAAAS.
S.W.O.R.D, the FBI and special forces from all corners investigating upon this little unexistent town that Wanda Maximoff created in order to overcome her grief from having lost everyone she loved. Yaay, we love us Marvel destroying us emotionally. Thank you. Fifth episode: “She’s gone, she didn’t belong here” HOLD ON, YOU HAD PREVIOUSLY SAID SHE HAD TO RUSH HOME.
Wanda not being able to control her babies with her powers is kinda weird. Need to know more about that.
Agnes breaking character and asking Wanda if they should start from the top definitely asks for suspicion. Vision being able to tell immediately this is weird it’s the weirdest of all because Vision is supposed to be dead, and Wanda remembered he was dead last episode, so how is HE able to tell this is all made up?
THE TWINS ALL GROWN UP ARE SUCH CUTIES.
Wanda stealing Vision’s body is not the question in here, the question is why did S.W.O.R.D have it of all people? Was that in the Sokovian accords, if Vision died his body went to them? That’s not normal, especially not because Tony came back, he would’ve taken care of Vision and not in that way.
OK, NOW I THINK I KNOW WHAT THE ADS MEAN. The toaster of Stark Industries was because a Stark missile burnt down Wanda’s home. The watch of Hydra was because for a great amount of time, Hydra controlled her a Pietro. The Lagos add of the paper towels speaks of how there is a mess and you need something to clean it up. Lagos was the place where Wanda accidentally killed people while she tried to stop Rumlow. SHIT, SHIT. All of the ads are past events of her life.
“You can fix anything, mom. Fix the dead.” BOY, ARE YOU SURE YOU WANNA GO THERE?
Now, Wanda can control everyone but her sons and Vision... that’s something definitely of interest.
MY BOY EVAN SHOWING UP. AAAA. I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since they got back the X-Men, my heart. My heart is happy.
Now, since Wanda is definitely warping reality, I do think this is the start of the multiverse. This is definitely Pietro. Not a recasting, this was her not fully controlling her powers and creating this.
Sixth episode: To start off, Vision is not actually Vision, or if he is, he can’t remember a thing. Probably that has something to do with Wanda bringing him back to life but she even erased the Avengers from his memory. She got rid of everything.
Pietro being completely aware of his role in this reality and why she called him, and then Wanda remembering he is also dead. Now I’m confused because I do think he has something to do with breaching realities but I’m not sure. lol
The people standing near Ellis Avenue being frozen and them being out of reach of Wanda’s circle making them stop all they’re doing. That’s insane.
Now, the twins having Pietro’s and Wanda’s powers. Billy being fully connected to Vision knowing he needs help. Then Wanda stopping time and being able to extend her reality in order to save Vision. This was not only visually incredible but hell, the display of Wanda’s powers grow more and more each day. This is gonna be insane.

Remembrance
Decided to write a bit of a bittersweet Kassidas ficlet. I have another, happy idea to write later, but I wanted this one out of the way first. You can get a palate cleaner whenever I end up writing it!
Pairing: Kassandra/Brasidas Assasins Creed Odyssey
warnings: canon character death... and possible tears reading this...
Golden light from the evening sun glinted off the edge of a bronze shield, set beneath an old willow tree. Kassandra sat before the small memorial she had built in front of her childhood home. It was small, simple, and centered around an old, battle worn Spartan shield. A small engraved plaque lay before it, reading the name "Brasidas of Sparta, Son of Tellis and Argileonis of Sparta".
It was the anniversary of the Battle of Amphipolis and Kassandra spent much of the day mourning the loss of the great general, her love. She remembered their last night together before the Fates so cruelly snatched him away, sending him to Hades. Tears threatened to fall, as they always did when she thought of him on this day.
"And what of these?" Brasidas asked, tracing the prominent scars on Kassandra's right arm. She had nestled herself in his arms, head under his chin. Both in a state of undress due to their earlier lovemaking.
"A very nasty pack of wolves on Kephallonia." Kassandra replied, "They were terrorizing a small farm. I think I was only sixteen at the time. Before I really made a name for myself as a Misthios. Another, more experienced mercenary WAS going to hunt them down, but he was a braggart and I beat him to it."
Brasidas laughed lightly at the thought of a teenage Kassandra taking on a pack of wolves, no doubt determined to prove herself and show up an older prideful mercenary, and too stubborn to back down from such a challenge. "Why am I not surprised you started such a life so young?"
She shrugged. "Not much a choice really. When you've been trained to fight, and your...'caretaker' is a bumbling idiot, you learn quickly becoming a Misthios is your best option."
He gently nuzzled into her loose hair, kissing the top of her head. Both were silent for a moment, before Kassandra spoke up.
"But... I do sometimes wonder what a simpler life would be like." she admitted.
"Is that so? And what kind of life do you dream of?"
Kassandra thought about it for a moment. In truth she wasn't sure she'd ever have such a life. A lifetime of fighting, surviving, and since she left Kephallonia, on the run from all manner of enemies.
"I'm...not entirely sure." she answered, "I just know one things family, my family."
Brasidas smiled, "Well, you've already started on such a path. You have your mater, your old house."
Kassandra sobered, "Just...need to bring my brother back. I promised Mater after all."
They both knew that would be no simple task, if it could be accomplished. Alexios suffered a lifetime of torture and brainwashing at the hands of the Cult, to be twisted and warped into their weapon, Deimos. However if anyone could do it, it'd be the Eagle Bearer Kassandra. Brasidas was confident she'd fight the entire pantheon if she had to.
"You will. I know it. You're too strong and stubborn." he replied, causing a small chuckle to erupt from Kassandra, lightening her mood. "But... perhaps you could have more." he added, a sense of unsureness in his voice as he trailed off.
Kassandra lifted her head to look at him, "What do you mean?" she asked.
Brasidas momentarily averted her gaze, suddenly seeming nervous. Rather uncharacteristic of the brave and confident Spartan she knew.
"Well, perhaps in the future, when this is all over of course... and you've reunited your family, we- I mean you..."
"Yes?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
He swallowed the nervous lump in his throat. "You... would choose to be my wife?"  he finished, finally meeting her gaze again.
Kassandra's eyes widened and her eyebrows shot up at his proposal. His eyes looked so nervous and vulnerable, afraid she'd say no and break his heart.
"I-I would not stop you from taking contracts, and I understand if you don't want to-" he quickly stammered, feeling like she'd reject him, she was a misthios, always on the move after all. Settling down just didn't seem like something she'd WANT; dream of perhaps, but not actively pursue it.
Brasidas' fears were quickly expunged from his mind as Kassandra's lips slammed into his own, her hands cradling his face.
"Yes! By the gods YES!" She answered when she pulled away, a huge smile beaming on her face.
Brasidas returned with an equally bright smile of his own as she pressed her forehead against his. He kissed the tip of her nose as she laughed joyfully.
"I love you." He whispered.
"And I love you." Kassandra replied, kissing her lover once again.
A single tear fell down Kassandra's cheek at the memory. That had been their last night together. The Battle of Amphipolis tragically ripped him from her life.
While she had succeeded in bringing her brother home, she'd be lying if she said there wasn't a small part of her that wanted to kill him for taking Brasidas from her. However Kassandra pushed that thought out of her mind. It was the monster Deimos and the Cult that killed her lover, not her brother. Not Alexios.
She did promise Myrrine she'd do whatever it took to bring him back. Kassandra also had other reasons for sparing him, one BECAUSE of Brasidas. She learned from him that not every solution has to end in death when she spared Lagos and saved his family. However one she had yet to reveal to her mother at the time. A reason she only discovered shortly after finding out Aspasia was the Ghost of Kosmos, and killing her. After that, she refused to spill any more blood if she could avoid it.
"Mater!" a small voice called, pulling Kassandra out of her memory and back to the present.
A little girl of six came running out of the house, carrying wooden dolls in her hands. Kassandra turned towards her daughter. Every time she looked at her, she saw Brasidas, their daughter looked so much like him. She had his pale, hazel-brown eyes. However it wasn't just the color that was the same, but the compassionate nature he possessed in them as well; but like him could be filled determined ferocity.
"Yes Phoibe?" Kassandra answered as the little girl ran over and settled herself in her mother's lap.
"They're finished!" Phoibe exclaimed, holding up the little wooden dolls she carried.
"Oh did Grandmater help you with those?" Kassandra asked.
Phoibe nodded, "Uh-huh. And Grandpater too!"
Of course he did. Kassandra thought, it seemed Nikolaos was doing everything possible to be the father he couldn't long ago for his granddaughter. From the moment he first held little Phoibe, he vowed he wouldn't make the same mistakes again with his family. He'd make it up to the children and wife he failed a lifetime ago.
Phoibe showed off the dolls as she placed them on the memorial, in front of Brasidas' shield.
"Here's Pater!" she explained, placing a wooden doll depicting a man with a shield, spear, and red cloth for a cloak wrapped around it. "Aaaand you Mater..." she continued, this time a figure of a woman with a broken spear in hand. "Then ME!" she exclaimed as she placed a much smaller child figure in front.
Kassandra smiled warmly, Phoibe loved making little dolls and other toys with her grandparents. "Aren't you forgetting some?" She asked.
"Oh yeah!" Phoibe dug into her pocket and pulled out a tiny, bird shaped carving. "Ikaros!" She cried, as the the eagle himself cheeped happily from the tree branch he was perched on.
"I didn't have enough material to make everyone else though... But I will!" she admitted. "Uncle Alexios said he wanted to help this time when he comes back."
"Did he now?"
Phoibe nodded. Alexios always left Sparta on this day, likely the guilt and shame he felt was too much to stay around his sister and niece. He still blamed himself for Kassandra losing her lover, for his niece never knowing her father. Even if Kassandra eventually forgave him.
She still remembered the look of intense pain and guilt on his face when Phoibe asked why she didn't have a father like her friends. She was four at the time. There was no point in lying to her. They told her the truth, that her beloved uncle killed him before she was born. However Alexios said it was a monster called Deimos inside him that killed the girl's father. He wasn't wrong, but when he admitted it he was terrified the niece he came to love would hate him. She never did. When she asked if the monster was gone, he nodded, saying he and his family killed it a long time ago. It was then she hugged him tightly, saying he wasn't a monster, he was her uncle, and she still loved him. Alexios broke down in tears and hugged her back when she said it.
Phoibe spoke up again. "He said he wanted to help because he wanted to make sure I made him look really strong and powerful... and to make Uncle Stentor ugly enough."
Kassandra snorted as she laughed, hugging her daughter close as she giggled back. "I see then." she answered.
For a few minutes she just held Phoibe close, admiring her daughter's handiwork. She was getting better at making her little toys. Her daughter was a fast learner both in creating toys, and in fighting. Kassandra made sure to keep with the family tradition of training her daughter to fight as well as the Spartan boys, better she hoped.
"Do you think Pater would be proud of me? I pray to Hermes all the time that he gets my messages." Phoibe asked innocently.
Kassandra kissed the top her head. "He IS proud of you Phoibe. And he loves you so much." She answered.
"Really?" Phoibe replied, looking up.
"Yes. He lives in Elysium now, and Hermes brings him ALL of your messages." Kassandra answered. "And one day, a loooooooong time from now, after you've had thousands of adventures, you'll get to see him. You'll get to tell him everything yourself."
"And Great Grandpater too!" the little girl added.
"Oh yes, him too. In fact I bet your Pater and he are fishing together in Elysium."
"Catch a big one Pater!" Phoibe called out towards the sky, causing another laugh to erupt from her mother.
While Brasidas had been taken from her life, he was not truly gone. He still lived on in her memory, in their daughter. It was during these moments, as Kassandra held her daughter in front of his memorial, on this day every year, she felt his presence beside her. Enveloping her as if hugging her and their daughter. As if his spirit was granted a brief visit from Hades on this day, to spend a small moment with his family until the day they could be reunited in Elysium.

“ But with Black Widow, the MCU seemed stuck. She’d been conceived in a different time, when it was sufficient for women to be sidekicks and decoration. An era when the former Marvel CEO Ike “Mar-a-Lago Cabinet” Perlmutter could block Black Widow merchandise because he didn’t think girls’ toys would sell. Though Black Widow was an extraordinary fighter and a fearless Avenger, she seemed perpetually cast as a foil to the male superheroes, rather than being a compelling character in her own stead. And as Avengers: Endgame proved (significant spoilers ahead), not even in her final moments would Romanova get to be the star. Her death was an act of sacrifice for Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, one in which Black Widow instantly calculated that his wife and children made his life worth more than her own. “
Give ‘em hell women. The Atlantic adds to the never ending list of us who just have to call Marvel out for its freaking sexism one final time.

Feeling a Sweet Sensation in Lagos
Tumblr media
The last time I was in Lagos, Nigeria, I took a trip to Sweet Sensation. Sweet Sensation is an authentic Nigerian indegenous brand of restaurant that serves authentic Nigerian indigenous cuisine. This restaurant has some sentimental significance for me; It’s where I had my very first birthday. Sweet Sensation is primarily based in Lagos state; one of the 36 states in Nigeria with the city of Lagos being the most populous city in Nigeria. The owner chose to stay in Lagos for the most part because she owns each individual Sweet Sensation branch; It is not a franchise business, so she wanted to maintain the quality of service at each branch by ensuring operations are not expanded too far.
Courtesy to customers is given highest attention by all staff at Sweet Sensation. Everything is centered around providing customers with a memorable and enjoyable experience from the moment you enter the vicinity. Each Sweet Sensation branch is designed to have ample parking space. The car and bus are main modes of transport in Nigeria so they have to cater for all there customers. On entering the restaurant you will see that each Sweet Sensation branch is uniquely designed on the exterior and interior. The motivation behind the design is to attract all age groups and particularly children. They were the first restaurant in Nigeria to introduce play areas with toys for children to spend time in after they finished eating.
Tumblr media
Speaking of food! People love to eat and eat well in Nigeria. You cannot host an occasion in Nigeria without serving food. Having said that, Sweet Sensation hosts a wide array of Nigerian cuisine. From yam and egg, swallow (This is a group of foods that you are supposed to swallow and not chew when eating. Some examples include garri, ebba, pounded yam, pounded rice...Oh yes, you heard that right.) and sweet potato to your staple rice, stew, fish, plantain, moin-moin (made with beans) and more. Sweet Sensation have you covered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They also have a signature dish called farmhouse pottage. It’s lime-green in colour and is a Sweet Sensation trade secret. They are the only ones in Nigeria who produce this dish. They also serve yam pottage which is orange in colour and well known throughout Nigeria.
Tumblr media
When you are placing your order in Sweet Sensation, you wait in line then point at the foods you would like in your meal and the server will dish them for you on your tray then you can pay by cash or card. Sweet Sensation was the first restaurant in Nigeria to introduce trays for customer convenience and to speed up order processing. They also have a unique cooking style. For example, when they are cooking yam and egg, they don’t cook the yam and egg separately. They cook them together so the egg sticks to the yam. Delicious!
They serve nice big portions so you can eat well. The food is quite filling. You will literally taste the value for money. They also serve pastries like meat pie, and cake on special order at all branches and do delivery as well. In fact, people order food for delivery from Sweet Sensation just so they can get their special takeaway pack. They also have halls for social occasions like birthday parties that people can rent out.
Tumblr media
Sweet Sensation is a special restaurant in Nigeria that many Nigerians grew up with and know well. If you want to try Nigerian cuisine, eat a filling meal and get a taste for the culture through the food then this is the place to be. I hope you enjoy your customer experience here too and that it is a memorable and sweet sensation!
