Toyota Corolla (1993-Present)

This post continues to show how the Corolla changed from being a standard compact car in 1993 to being one of the most best-selling cars in the world by 2020.

1993-1997 Toyota Corolla (E100)

The E100 generation was a much larger, heavier, and more aerodynamic car, than the E90 Corolla generation. It had also moved into the class of compact cars, taking the place of the Corona and the Camry.

1998-2002 Toyota Corolla (E110)

The E110 generation shared the bodystyle (and even doors on most variants) as the previous generation of Corolla. For this generation, the Base, XLi, GLi, and SE-G trim levels were introduced as well.

2003-2008 Toyota Corolla (E120/130)

The E120/E130 Generation came with a longer wheelbase. This generation of the Corolla in particular, was designed as a global car to suit the market needs of different countries, which helped it become one of the most popular generation of Corollas ever sold. This generation also sparked the production of the Toyota Matrix hatchback, which sold in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

2009-2013 Toyota Corolla (E140/E150)

This generation of Corolla was based on the E120 generation, which is seen by the similar designed bodystyle and doors. However, the E140s which were sold in the U.S. (and most of Asia) used the wider version of the E140 platform, while South Africa and other countries were sold the E150 edition. This generation of Corolla shared similar styling components to both the Camry and the Yaris, and overall improved in driving conditions compared to the previous generation. In the 2011 model, not only was the Corolla given a slight facelight (with new front and rear designs as well as changes to the interior). The XLE and XRS trims were discontinued in the U.S.

2014-2019 Toyota Corolla (E170/E180)

For this generation, the Corolla had an increase in the length of its wheelbase. The front and rear design for the North American E170 was based on the Toyota Furia concept car. This generation was offered in the L, LE, S, and introduced the LE Eco as well. The Corolla had also become the world's best-selling car by this point. By the 2015 model year, a Special Edition Corolla, based on the S trim was introduced, and in the 2017 model year, not only was the S trim replaced with an SE trim, the XSE was introduced as well the Corolla recieving new exterior paint options.

2020-Present Toyota Corolla (E210)

The current generation of the Corolla to date includes a hatchback and station wagon variations in addition to the sedan. In the 2022 model year, the Corolla introduced a GR Corolla based on the hatchback. The L (or base model) was dropped for this generation in the U.S. and the Corolla remains the best-selling sedan in the world with 1.6% of the market.

No Static At All

I bought my first car in 1979. It was a two-door Toyota Corolla, and about as basic as it could be. With a four-on-the-floor (which is now a rarity!), a heater, defogger, and AM/FM radio, it got me where I needed to be. And like a lot of people back then, I bought an add-on cassette deck, and mounted it under the dash. Two speakers on the rear deck meant that I was riding in style.

Well, in my mind. I kept telling myself that.

Skip forward to the van I bought in 2020 during high COVID. I knew the rental car companies were in a world of hurt, and needed to sell off inventory to generate cash flow, which would be used to buy newer models. This meant fire sales across the country at their regional sales lots. I shopped online, and got a killer deal on a low-mileage 2019, and am still driving it.



I had owned it for a full year before I discovered there was a CD player hiding behind the LCD panel. I haven’t listened to CDs in years. I had signed up for SXM when I got the van, and that was all I ever listened to, ignoring AM/FM as relics of the past. And when I get bored with 150+ satellite stations, I sync my phone to the system, and tune in Spotify. I suspect I am no different from millions of other motorists.

All of which causes me to ponder how much music consumption has changed through the years. We have gone digital, streaming either from satellites or cellular services, and in a fairly short amount of time. Spotify did not arrive in the US until 2011, and the original XM Radio in 2008.

The only time I have even used the old-school radio was last summer while crossing western Canada. I intentionally flipped over to FM, because I wanted to experience the Canadian Content law, which stipulates that at least 35% of the songs played must have some Canadian origins, either writer, performer, or production.

But for all the growth of digital music, companies like Spotify are still swimming in red ink. My students who were with me in MKT6356 last semester remember a huge end-of-semester assignment that involved watching a Netflix series about Spotify and the struggles it faced when it was founded. Their latest earnings report shows that, while listeners (both the free and subscriber kinds) rose significantly, things are not all that rosy. The firm slashed six-percent of its global workforce, or 600 employees.

And get this: Their shares popped yesterday. I guess that a growing listener base trumps losses and layoffs.

Spotify points to its aggressive moves into podcasting as the source of its woes. They dropped some major cash for exclusive rights, including $200 million for the Joe Rogan Experience. And some of those podcasts have not exactly performed at expected levels. Spotify relies on ears (unlike eyeballs for most other media), and if people are not listening (which they can track quite well), then advertising revenues will sag. Investors are bullish, though, and still see future profit potential.

In a related move, Ford just announced it was going to eliminate the AM radio in its new F-150 EVs. I’m not sure how or why they chose this model. While that move probably doesn’t ruffle the feathers of many EV drivers (or most people in general), it did upset one rural radio station owner who contends that farmers and other country folk need their AM radio to be able to get the latest wheat and cattle futures. That’s something you can’t do on FM, SXM, or Spotify.



I’ll let those people iron out that one, but for a guy who only used his broadcast radio for a few days in the last 2 1/2 years, I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. I’ve got too many choices as it stands on my SXM and Spotify. I keep sending my money to both, and were even just one of them to go away, my drives would be a lot quieter. 



Kind of like in that ’79 Corolla whenever I drove out of signal range, and the cassette got stuck in the player. Oh, the humanity.

TORONTO, ON– Did you know that in October last year, Toyota Canada Inc. conducted a safety recall involving fuel pumps on certain Lexus and Toyota vehicles produced between July 2017 and September 2020.

Approximately 125,802 vehicles are involved in this recall. The model and model years that have vehicles included in this recall are:

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Ford F-150 en voyage et ma «folie» Lotus!

Les choses ne se produisent pas toujours comme on le veut. Je devais terminer ma participation à l’ÉcoMois de l’AJAC en roulant avec une Jeep Wrangler Hybrid mais Stellantis Canada en a décidé autrement. À la place, j’ai eu droit à la fourgonnette de luxe Pacifica mais en version hybride électrique, un autre véhicule qui était inscrit au programme de l’ÉcoMois. Par conséquent, je devrai remettre mes impressions de conduite de la Wrangler 4xe à plus tard. En attendant, voici quelques mots sur la Pacifica hybride qui, avouons-le, devrait être un choix logique pour des déplacements locaux en famille.

Je vous ferai grâce des détails esthétiques de la Pacifica vu que j’ai décrit ce véhicule en détail il y a quelques mois dans ce blogue. Toutefois, c’était alors la version «régulière» mais à traction intégrale. Dans le cas qui nous intéresse ici, la version hybride électrique enfichable («Plug-In» si vous voulez utiliser les termes américains) n’est livrable qu’avec la traction avant. Les éléments «techniques» impliquent le V6 à essence de 3,6 litres et deux moteurs électriques, le tout développant quelque 260 chevaux (curieusement, un peu moins que la version à essence régulière) ce qui permet des temps d’accélérations de quelque 8 secondes pour passer du point mort à 100 km/h. Pas si mal pour un véhicule de ce gabarit!

Au départ, la Pacifica Hybrid ne se déplace qu’avec le moteur électrique. L’autonomie de la batterie est d’alors environ 50 kilomètres. Passé cette limite, le V6 entre en action mais il continue d’être appuyé par le moteur électrique selon la sollicitation du conducteur. Selon mes impressions de conduite, cette Pacifica équivaut bien plusieurs véhicules de cette motorisation et plus même, ne serait-ce que par sa capacité d’y accepter jusqu’à huit passagers en tout confort. Malheureusement, dans sa configuration hybride, la Pacifica perd sa caractéristique de sièges du centre qui se rabattent dans le plancher (c’est là qu’il y a les batteries!).

Mon essai fut plutôt court, juste le temps de prendre connaissance avec le véhicule. Selon plusieurs sources, la consommation d’essence de cette Chrysler tournerait autour des 8,0 l./100 km. Éventuellement, j’espère remettre la main sur ce véhicule pour un vrai «road trip», la seule véritable façon d’apprécier tout véhicule, surtout une fourgonnette de ce calibre (qui, en passant, a été votée Meilleure voiture électrique de l’année par l’AJAC en 2020 !). Il est difficile d’en établir le prix exact. Il existe deux versions, la Limited et la Pinnacle et il est possible (toujours possible, je l’espère) d’obtenir plusieurs rabais dus au fait qu’elle est hybride électrique ce qui pourrait ramener son prix autour des 45 000 $. J’y reviendrai certainement.

Plus de 1000 km en F-150

Lorsque Ford a «relancé» son F-150 il y a quelques mois, j’ai eu l’opportunité de vous en faire connaître deux versions, l’originale avec moteur EcoBoost de 3,5 litres et la version «hybride» avec le même moteur mais aidé d’un moteur électrique. Évidemment, pour les besoins de la cause, la version hybride était plus intéressante, surtout pour des déplacements urbains et l’économie de carburant qui en découle. Je n’ai donc couvert que quelques centaines de kilomètres avec chacun des modèles durant la même semaine ce qui n’est pas toujours représentatif des attentes d’un automobiliste voulant en savoir plus sur ce nouveau véhicule.

Le hasard a voulu que je puisse remettre la main sur la version Platinum à moteur EcoBoost régulier pour quelques jours la semaine dernière. Et je l’ai utilisé pour apporter certains outils imposants à mon fils qui vit en Abitibi. Voilà donc la bonne occasion de faire un vrai «road trip» avec le tout récent F-150 et profiter de son utilité.

Parce que j’entends très souvent des critiques sur un tel véhicule. Fréquemment, on le mentionne comme étant un «ennemi» de l’environnement (les «gros F-150 énergivores») sans vraiment tenir compte du fait que plusieurs gens les utilisent pour leur travail ou pour déplacer leurs outils ou leurs véhicules de loisir. Généralement, ces commentaires (qui valent aussi pour les Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ram, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan et leurs variants sport utilitaires) les placent trop souvent dans un contexte urbain. Oui, ils sont plus gros qu’une Corolla. Mais leur utilité en est toute différente.

Le plus ironique, c’est que lorsqu’on sort d’un milieu urbain, on voit bien souvent plus de pick-up que de voitures! En route de Laval vers l’Abitibi, je jouais un jeu avec ma femme lui demandant de deviner quelle marque de véhicule pouvait s’apprêter à nous doubler. Vous vous en doutez, il y a avait alors plusieurs F-150 (à un moment donné, il n’y en avait pas un, ni deux, ni trois mais bien quatre F-150 qui me doublaient l’un derrière l’autre, tous avec une sorte de charge quelconque). En général, les F-150 (et compagnie) servent à quelque tâche!

Le F-150 Platinum que j’ai utilisé s’est avéré un véritable véhicule de grand luxe tant sur l’autoroute que sur route secondaire (et même en ville de campagne!). La charge dans la caisse (qui était très bien arrimée grâce au système d’attaches du constructeur aidant), nous nous sommes retrouvés dans un véhicule extrêmement doux et silencieux. De plus, son V6 était suffisamment puissant pour lui procurer des accélérations impressionnantes et des reprises étonnantes. Mais voici la plus grande surprise. J’ai obtenu une moyenne de 10,3 l./100 km durant ce voyage à une vitesse moyenne d’environ 105 km/h! Si ça ne vous dit rien, sachez que c’est la consommation qui se rapproche le plus de celle d’une berline moyenne comme une Chrysler 300, une Ford Taurus ou même une Toyota Camry avec un moteur V6! Et cela, avec du carburant régulier en plus! Ajoutez à cela la capacité de tirer une remorque allant jusqu’à plus de 12 000 livres! Voilà de quoi répondre à ses détracteurs qui disent ne jamais en vouloir «parce que ça consomme trop!».

Incidemment, ce F-150 est aussi un véhicule à quatre roues motrices (sur commande ou automatique) qui peut se déplacer dans des sentiers modérés (et qui s’avérera presque invulnérable dans la neige en hiver). De plus, comme c’en est le cas pour tous les F-150 4 x 4 vendus au Canada avec les ensembles de remorquage, celui-ci avait cette commande qui permettait à son opérateur de reculer avec une remorque et de placer celle-ci à l’aide de ce bouton rotatif sans même toucher au volant! Et, si vous revenez à mon article initial de mars dernier, vous y verrez des prises de courant dans le flanc gauche de la caisse!

Évidemment, un tel véhicule vient à un prix, dans ce cas, plus de 80 000 $. Mais, c’est le prix à payer pour autant de possibilités. Et, à voir le nombre de F-150 sur la route (et lorsqu’on en analyse les chiffres de ventes étonnants), on ne peut en dénier la popularité. Oh! Juste avant de terminer, méfiez-vous, il y a de la police sur la route 117 qui mène en Abitibi. Et les policiers y roulent en…F-150!

Enfin, plusieurs de mes amis ont vu cette photo d’une «épave» de Lotus Europe sur une remorque derrière le Nissan Armada dont il était question dans ce blogue la semaine dernière. Oui, c’est mon prochain projet.

Ceux qui me connaissent savent que j’aime reconstruire des maquettes, des miniatures d’automobiles abandonnées ou fortement «abusées» et leur donner une «seconde vie». J’en ai fait à toutes les échelles, 1/32e, 1/25e, 1/16e et même 1/8e. Cette fois, ce sera au 1/1!

Cette Europa est abandonné depuis plusieurs années. Ayant été partiellement endommagée par un feu à l’arrière, certains bricoleurs ont tenté de la modifier…je ne sais trop comment. Il y a moins d’une dizaine d’années, le châssis avait été restauré. Il a même reçu un moteur Renault plus puissant. Mais le travail fut abandonné et le châssis s’est retrouvé à l’extérieur, exposé aux intempéries.

Je l’ai donc retrouvé en pièces détachées et lorsque j’ai montré les photos de l’auto à mon ami Michel Pigeon, celui-là même qui a construit ma Cobra (et quelque 30 autres!), il m’a répondu que c’était du travail mais que ce n’était pas impossible. Surtout pour lui qui sait comment travailler le métal et la fibre de verre.

L’auto est donc maintenant en sécurité où je devrai commencer bientôt un travail de démontage. S’il y aura des pièces à remplacer, j’ai déjà le livre de «construction» de l’Europa avec tous les détails concernant le châssis, la mécanique (en majeure partie empruntée d’autres voitures) incluant les mesures complètes.

Ce sera certes un travail de patience de trois ou quatre ans. Mais j’ai bien l’intention de l’amener à bon port. Et si ce blogue survit au temps, j’aurai certainement la fierté de vous montrer ce que je sais faire avec ce que les modélistes appellent «a glue bomb» ou ce que j’appelle une épave. Un petit brin de folie, quoi!

La Lotus Emira !  

Enfin, pour terminer ce blogue, je viens de voir les premières images de la toute nouvelle Lotus Emira, une toute petite GT qui remplacera sous peu les Elise et Exige. Les présentations sont plutôt discrètes mais on y apprend que l’Emira est conçue comme les autres Lotus avec un châssis léger et une carrosserie toute en fibre de verre. Elle sera disponible avec un moteur à quatre cylindres AMG (Mercedes…) de 2,0 litres qui fait 360 chevaux ou un V6 Toyota de 400 chevaux. L’Emira sera la toute dernière voiture de Lotus avec un moteur à essence. Les modèles à venir seront tous électriques…

16 Injured In Botched Illegal Firework Detonation By Police (CBS News) At least 16 people, including 10 law enforcement officers, were injured and several cars and structures were damaged Wednesday evening when police attempted to safely detonate approximately 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks that were seized in South Los Angeles. “It felt like a really hard earthquake like we never felt before, said Jazmin Vazquez, a resident. Other neighbors said they were shaken out of their beds and rattled off their couches from the impact of the explosion.

U.S. Budget Deficit to Reach Near-Record $3 Trillion in 2021, CBO Says (Bloomberg) The U.S. will see a $3 trillion budget deficit this year, close to the 2020 record, while the economy will expand notably more than previously forecast, the Congressional Budget Office said as it incorporated the impact of President Joe Biden’s Covid-19 relief program. The deficit for the full 2020 fiscal year was $3.13 trillion, the biggest relative to the size of the economy since World War II. The totals amount to 13.4% of GDP in 2021 and 4.7% next year, and mark an increase from prior forecasts, as the CBO factored in the Biden administration’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which was passed in March.

Elsa strengthens into season’s 1st hurricane in Caribbean (AP) Elsa strengthened into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season on Friday as it blew off roofs and snapped trees in the eastern Caribbean, where officials closed schools, businesses and airports. It appeared headed eventually in the general direction of Florida. The Category 1 storm is the first hurricane to hit Barbados in more than 60 years, unleashing heavy rains and winds on the island and then on St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which are struggling to recover from recent massive volcanic eruptions. The long-term forecast track showed it heading toward Florida as a tropical storm by Tuesday morning, but some models would carry it into the Gulf or up the Atlantic Coast.

Drought Economy (Foreign Policy) When Mexico’s central bank hiked its interest rates last week, it cited the ongoing drought as a major inflation risk. Meanwhile, Brazil’s inflation has risen to over 8 percent annually amid drought-induced food and electricity price increases. Inflation is just one hardship that droughts are currently causing in the two countries and their neighbors: Lack of rain is also driving crop loss, migration, and more severe forest fires. The droughts and all their consequences are exacerbated by rising temperatures as well.

Sweden stunned by rare shooting of police officer as gang violence worries grow (Reuters) Swedish caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Lofven expressed outrage on Thursday over the killing of an on-duty police officer, a rarity in the Nordic country, calling it an “attack on our open society” amid growing concerns over gang violence. The police officer in his 30s was shot and killed late on Wednesday while on duty in Biskopsgarden, a Gothenburg suburb that has been plagued by gang violence in recent years and where police have had an increased presence. Coronavirus cases rise in Europe for first time in 10 weeks (Washington Post) The number of new coronavirus cases increased across Europe for the first time in 10 weeks, the World Health Organization said Thursday, ending a stretch that had raised hopes the pandemic would recede as vaccinations were on the rise. New infections jumped 10 percent over the past week in the 53 countries that make up the WHO European region, the agency’s regional director for Europe, Hans Kluge, said in a briefing. US hands Bagram Airfield to Afghans after nearly 20 years (AP) After nearly 20 years, the U.S. military left Bagram Airfield, the epicenter of its war to oust the Taliban and hunt down the al-Qaida perpetrators of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America, two U.S. officials said Friday. Afghanistan’s district administrator for Bagram, Darwaish Raufi, said the American departure was done overnight without any coordination with local officials, and as a result early Friday dozens of local looters stormed through the unprotected gates before Afghan forces regained control. “They were stopped and some have been arrested and the rest have been cleared from the base,” Raufi told The Associated Press, adding that the looters ransacked several buildings before being arrested and the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces (ANDSF) took control. The withdrawal from Bagram Airfield is the clearest indication that the last of the 2,500-3,500 U.S. troops have left Afghanistan or are nearing a departure, months ahead of President Joe Biden’s promise that they would be gone by Sept. 11.

Anxious Afghans fear tomorrow; many seeking to leave (AP) Imtiaz Mohmand, just 19, makes a living selling melons out of a crate perched on his three-wheel motorcycle in the Afghan capital’s Kart-e-Now neighborhood. He only managed to finish Grade 7 before being sent to work to help support a family of 13. He has been robbed twice. Both times, his mobile phone was taken, along with his meager earnings of the day. In four days, he and four friends will leave Afghanistan. They have paid a smuggler to sneak them across the border to Iran and into Turkey. “There’s no job, no security here. There are thieves everywhere. I tried to make a living but I can’t,” said Mohmand, who has seven friends already on their way to Turkey. Mohmand’s frustration and anxieties run like a theme through most conversations in today’s Afghanistan as Afghans witness the final withdrawal of the U.S. military and its NATO allies. Afghans say international forces are leaving a country deeply impoverished, on the brink of another civil war and with a worsening lawlessness that terrifies some more than the advancing Taliban insurgency. The Chinese Communist Party Is Scared of Christianity (Foreign Policy) As the Chinese Communist Party celebrates its centenary, Christianity—and other faiths—remain among the challengers it fears most. Religious controls have been part of communist practice since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. But since 2018, many churches have been shut down—mostly unsanctioned ones but including some officially recognized groups. Between 5,000 and 10,000 Christian churchgoers have been arrested, some prominent Protestant clergy have been given long prison sentences, and around two-thirds of China’s Protestants have resorted to underground churches in an attempt to avoid police harassment. Government officials have been asked to compile more details of worshippers, feeding into discrimination in employment, especially in official posts. All children under age 18 have been strictly prohibited from attending any kind of religious education—theoretically already the case but not strongly enforced beforehand. Religious leaders are now expected to spend more time extolling the CCP and Chinese President Xi Jinping personally than they do seeing to their flock. In some churches, icons of Jesus or Mary have already been replaced with portraits of Xi. Philippine Volcano Leads To Evacuations (NBC News) Mass evacuations were underway in the Philippines Thursday after the alert status was raised for the Taal volcano, located 45 miles south of Manila. Although it’s one of the world’s smallest active volcanoes, standing at only 1,020 feet, Taal can be deadly. An eruption in 1911 killed more than 1,300 people. In January 2020, Taal shot a column of ash and steam almost 10 miles into the sky, forcing more than 100,000 people to abandon their homes and causing widespread flight cancellations and heavy ash falls in Manila.

Australia locks out thousands more citizens as virus slip-ups mount (Washington Post) Facing outbreaks of the contagious delta variant and a floundering vaccination campaign, Australia moved Friday to further seal itself off from the world as its earlier success in tackling the coronavirus continued to unravel. Officials agreed to halve the number of people permitted to enter the nation under an already strict border policy that bars entry to nearly everyone except returning citizens, residents and their immediate families, who must quarantine for two weeks in a hotel at their own expense. Railguns (AP) The U.S. Navy has mothballed its electromagnetic railgun program after spending around $500 million on R&D for the weapon, which uses electricity to fire projectiles at seven times the speed of sound. Instead, they’re funding hypersonic missiles, directed energy systems and electronic warfare. The key issue was that the operating range of 110 miles meant that a ship with a railgun would be in range of missiles, so, whoops. Another problem is that while a normal gun can be fired 600 times before needing a refurbished barrel, the prototype railgun had to be replaced anywhere between a dozen or two dozen shots.

Driving By Numbers: Canada’s 10 best-selling vehicles in 2021’s first quarter

2020’s spring collapse created pent-up demand, caused savings to accumulate, and opened up discretionary spending. Those factors came home to roost throughout much of the second half of 2020, but they were all the more evident in the first quarter of 2021.

The result: huge Q1 sales figures from many of Canada’s best-selling vehicles. Setting aside the strong auto sales period of 2016 to 2019, the first quarter of 2021 was actually better than what the industry achieved in 2015, which at the time was a record year.

Pickup truck sales? Very healthy. Compact SUVs, the biggest segment of all? Exploding. High-end luxury? Shooting through the roof.

Of course, the year-over-year comparison with 2020’s first-quarter – sales rose 16 per cent to just under 385,000 units – is largely invalid. The first quarter of 2020 ended with one of the most sudden economic halts in history. The second quarter of 2021 will reveal an even more striking year-over-year shift, as it wasn’t until April that the enormity of the auto industry’s demand disappearance became evident (only 47,000 vehicles were sold last April, down nearly 140,000 sales from April 2019).

There are, however, top-selling vehicles that actually managed to produce even fewer sales in early 2021’s healthy market than in early 2020’s disastrous market. That’s right, they’re cars. Demand for passenger cars is even worse now than it was when the pandemic first took hold of the Canadian economy.

Regardless of the category, however, demand is only part of the equation. Across swathes of the Canadian market, inventory remains problematic. In certain instances, the inventory crisis is escalating due to microchip shortages and what many believe will be a forthcoming rubber shortage, as well. It’s almost enough to make you wax nostalgic for the days of prowling grocery store aisles in search of toilet paper.

Inventory constraints or not, Canada’s 10 most popular vehicles combined for more than 140,000 sales in 2021’s first-quarter. That’s better than one-third of the entire new vehicle market. It’s a group of four pickups, four crossovers, and two cars. Three are made in Canada. Seven different manufacturers are represented. All but one were present on this very same list a year ago; five maintained their position. As the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Elantra, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Jeep Wrangler stand on the outside looking in, these were Canada’s 10 best-selling vehicles in 2021’s first quarter.

10. Hyundai Kona: 6,860, up 55 per cent

Up from 13th at this time last year, the Hyundai Kona is the only member of this best sellers group that wasn’t among the 10 leaders in the first-quarter of 2020. But Kona sales are booming — in fact, Kona sales exploded even during the deep, dark challenges of 2020. Sales jumped 56 per cent last summer, for example. The Kona is now solidly entrenched as Canada’s No.1 subcompact crossover.

9. Toyota Corolla: 7,116, down 9 per cent

Although very nearly the top-selling car in Canada in the first-quarter of 2021, the Toyota Corolla nevertheless reported a quantifiable sales decline (the Corolla actually outsold the Civic during the month of March). The Corolla’s chances of finishing 2021 ahead of the Honda remain slim, however. Honda will pump out remaining 10th-gen Civics and then generate ample hype with an all-new 11th-gen Civic later this year. Yet for now, the Corolla certainly appears in with a shout, trailing the Civic by only 42 sales.

8. Honda Civic: 7,158, down 21 per cent

Temporarily endangered by a dreadful first-quarter in which Civic sales fell nearly three times faster than the passenger car market at large, Honda’s 23-time best-seller is entering a heavier incentive phase with the aim of maintaining its crown. The Civic first became Canada’s top-selling car in 1998 but was last the overall top seller in 2008. At this point in 2020, the Civic ranked seventh overall.

7. Nissan Rogue: 9,218, up 67 per cent

Surging forward from the 10th overall position in 2020’s first quarter to seventh in 2021, the Nissan Rogue proves just how important a generational changeover can be. From the Rogue’s peak of 43,418 sales in 2017, Canadian volume fell below 38,000 units just two years later. Only 25,998 Rogues were sold last year. The long-awaited much-needed new Rogue arrived at the tail end of 2020 and is wildly more competitive. It’s paying off.

6. Honda CR-V: 11,533, up 26 per cent

2020 was the first year in Canada in which the CR-V became Honda’s top seller. Now, only three months into 2021, the CR-V is outselling the No.2 Honda by a whopping 1.6-to-1 margin. This is the heart of the modern “car” market. The CR-V is dominating Honda showrooms, but it’s losing ground to Canada’s top-ranked SUV. Sales of the CR-V are growing; sales of the Toyota RAV4 are booming. Both are built in Canada.

5. Chevrolet Silverado: 14,478, up 30 per cent

Pickup trucks are a major component in a revitalized Canadian auto market. Or at least they would be if automakers could stock enough pickups to meet demand. In the first quarter of 2021, that hasn’t been as much of a problem for General Motors as it has for Ford and Ram. As a result, Silverado sales are up 30 per cent in a full-size truck sector where the competition is up just 6 per cent.

4. Toyota RAV4: 15,665, up 45 per cent

From the fifth position a year ago, the Toyota RAV4 motored into the top four in 2021 thanks to a 45-per-cent year-over-year sales increase valued at nearly 5,000 additional sales. The RAV4’s broad model range does Toyota big favours: the hybrid and plug-in hybrid are big hits, as well, especially since there’s such a bizarre dearth of competition for green vehicles in Canada’s most popular segment.

3. GMC Sierra: 16,670, up 41 per cent

Combined, GMC’s Sierra and its Chevrolet Silverado sibling actually combined to outsell the top-ranked vehicle in the country in 2021’s first quarter. It was a narrow margin; fewer than 1,000 units. But that’s a major shift. It speaks volumes about GM’s market share in the full-size truck sector. At this point last year, GM owned 31 per cent of Canada’s full-size pickup market. That figure now stands at 37 per cent.

2. Ram pickup: 21,367, up 11 per cent

Stellantis’s full-size truck, the Ram 1500 and its heavy duty siblings, are locked firmly in the No.2 position, with little danger of falling off the podium and virtually no chance of ascending the top of the podium. It’s not a bad place to be, not in an era of booming pickup truck demand. Full-size trucks now produce 22 per cent of all auto sales in Canada. The Ram pickup produces one-quarter of that 22 per cent.

1. Ford F-Series: 30,238, up 6 per cent

Restricted availability as Ford transitions into a new F-150 hasn’t stopped the F-Series from easily securing top spot in Canada’s overall vehicle sales rankings (the F-Series has been No.1 since 2009). But it has limited the big Ford’s market share in the full-size truck sector, which dropped three points from last year to 36 per cent. Yet the F-Series remains a key indicator of the overall Canadian auto market: one out of every 13 vehicles sold in Canada is a full-size Ford pickup.

Ở mỗi quốc gia và vùng lãnh thổ đều có "ông vua" doanh số, trong đó quán quân ở cả Mỹ và Canada đều là Ford F-series.

Theo dữ liệu từ trang Best Selling Cars Blog, trang duy nhất tổng hợp doanh số ôtô tại hơn 175 thị trường trên khắp thế giới, những quán quân thường không gây ngạc nhiên. Nhưng vẫn có một số sản phẩm đặc biệt trong 30 mẫu xe bán chạy nhất tại những thị trường lớn nhất thế giới.

1. Mỹ - Ford F-series (787.372 xe)

Mỹ vẫn là thị trường xe mới lớn thứ hai thế giới, với 14,67 triệu xe bán trong 2020. F-series chiếm vị trí đầu bảng tại thị trường nội địa kể từ 1981, tức suốt 39 năm liên tiếp.

So với doanh số 2019, số xe F-series bán được trong 2020 giảm 100.000 chiếc, và mẫu bán tải của Ford cũng phải chia bớt thị phần cho các đối thủ của Toyota và Chevrolet, nhưng vẫn giữ ngôi quán quân.

2. Trung Quốc - Nissan Sylphy (542.725)

Sylphy chiếm vị trí cao nhất ở Trung Quốc, hạ bệ Toyota Corolla, với hơn 540.000 xe bán ra. Dù thấp hơn doanh số của Corolla trong 2019, nhưng Trung Quốc cũng giống nhiều thị trường khác trên thế giới, khi doanh số ôtô mới giảm trong 2020. Thậm chí Corolla còn tụt xuống vị trí thứ tư, sau cả Volkswagen Lavida và Haval H6.

Cụ thể, doanh số ôtô của Trung Quốc trong 2020 giảm 1,9% so với 2019, đạt 20,19 triệu xe bán ra, và vẫn là thị trường lớn nhất thế giới.

3. Ấn Độ - Maruti Suzuki Swift (160.765)

Doanh số tốt nhất thuộc về Grandeur và sản phẩm này giúp Hyundai giữ vững ngôi vương ở thị trường nội địa, dù doanh số của hãng giảm 1,1%. Kia tăng 6,3% và đứng vị trí thứ hai, trong khi Genesis - cũng thuộc Hyundai - tăng 5,8% và chiếm số 3.

7. Đức - Volkswagen Golf (136.324)

Golf không chỉ chiếm đỉnh bảng doanh số trong 2020 mà còn giúp Volkswagen lập kỷ lục với tổng số 2,92 xe bán ra. Hãng Đức còn có hai sản phẩm khác trong Top 3, là Passat và Tiguan.

Passat tăng thị phần, với 2,7% tại Đức. Trong khi đó, Tiguan đang bị chính một sản phẩm khác cùng nhà, mẫu xe điện I.D. 3 đe dọa vị trí, khi đã bị vượt mặt trong tháng 12/2020.

8. Brazil - Chevrolet Onix (135.351)

Thị trường Brazil bán được tổng cộng 1,95 triệu xe mới trong 2020 và Chevrolet Onix là xe được mua nhiều nhất. Vị trí này của Onix không thay đổi từ 2014 dù doanh số trong 2020 giảm 26,6%.

9. Canada - Ford F-series (128.649)

Thị trường xe mới ở Canada giảm 19,7% trong 2020 so với 2019, nhưng không ngăn được Ford, General Motors (GM), Toyota, Hyundai-Kia tăng thị phần. Đây cũng là bộ tứ bán được nhiều xe nhất Canada.

Không chỉ ở Mỹ, Ford F-series chứng tỏ sự thu hút đối với khách hàng ở Canada, với 26 năm liên tiếp giữ ngôi quán quân.

10. Nga - Lada Granta (126.112)

Lada giảm doanh số 21,5% tại thị trường nội địa trong 2020, cũng giống phần lớn các đối thủ. Toàn thị trường ở quốc gia Đông Âu bán được gần 1,6 triệu xe trong 2020 và tiếp tục đà giảm kể từ 2017.

Một trong số ít hãng xe tăng trưởng ở Nga là Skoda, cùng một số hãng xe Trung Quốc, như Haval, Geely và Chery. Tuy nhiên, những hãng xe bán được nhiều sau Lada là Kia và Hyundai.
