Behold! @overlyenthusiasticfictionreader recently did a binding of my fanfic Toy Soldiers and sent me a copy (cat for scale).
I love that bookbinding has become a thing in fandom, and I love seeing the books people produce, so it's especially delightful to see one of mine being bound and to receive a copy. It came very nicely wrapped and was so tiny and cool -- it's so neat to me that the binding information is included, and that this is one of those hobbies where people share that kind of thing to help each other out and document the work they've done.
Amyda has a post about the binding process here, and a post on AO3 here; I'll be reblogging the tumblr post separately in a bit. Thank you again!
[ID: Four images; the first shows a wrapped package, sealed with wax and tied with rainbow ribbon, sitting on my kitchen table; the next image shows it resting on a Captain America blanket next to Dearborn the tortie, who is crouched and sniffing it (she was fascinated). The third shows the book unwrapped, a small red volume with Toy Soldiers stamped in gold on the cover, which also features fireworks on it. The fourth image is a close up of the book, still on the Cap blanket, showing off the cover.]

Tiny Book Bang 2023!
So this year is Renegade Bindery's first Tiny Book Bang. Typesetters formatted typesets to be any size smaller than a quarto, and binders later bound up those books!
I made two typesets for the Bang this year: the Kaer Morhan Bookclub by Jack Ironsides, and Gilded Chain by Sroloc_Elbisivni. I am delighted by both books I received from other binders! I learned so much from seeing the bindings that other folks completed! I felt very connected to our fan community, crafting across fandoms and international borders!
But this post is mostly about the book I bound for the Bang: Toy Soldiers by Copperbadge!
Tumblr media
@mourningmountainsbindery made a delightful octavo-sized typeset of this story, "lightly comic-book themed" as described by the typesetter. There are three books because I bound for myself, my typesetter, and I always like to tempt the author with a book if I can. Both mourningmountainsbindery and @copperbadge have received their books, so I am free to share!
Tumblr media
I tried to sneak in as many fun things as I could. Here we have some shiny foil on the title page.
Tumblr media
The endbands are red/white/blue for Steve and red/gold for Tony.
Tumblr media
I was incredibly fortunate that 4th of July was right around the corner when I shopped for materials. I found very appropriate cloth for the bookcloth cover ;) And the endpapers I have had for a very long time (a decade?!), so I was definitely glad to find them a home!
Thank you mourningmountainsbindery for the lovely typeset, thank you copperbadge for a lovely story! And thank you mods for all the hard work you do in the background.

"Come now, let's be off! There's a battle in the offing! We've got kingdoms to save and women to love!": "The Sword & The Sorcerer" Fantasy Playset, one of the all-time greatest Rack Toys of the '80s and any other decade. Somehow, and R-rated Fantasy flick garnered a mini-toy line -- including coloring books (!) -- proof of how popular the Sword & Sorcery genre was at that time. I still have this, purchased right off a rack in my local pharmacy. Look at all you get here: Barbarian heroes in loincloths on foot and on horseback, the villainous sorcerer, a wolfman-like foe, glow in the dark weapons, and a castle backdrop facade complete with the titular wizard emblazoned on the door. There were additional sets including monochrome dragons with wings and fins, along with larger rubber monsters in the vein of the "Dungeons & Dragons" series that were scented like kiddie soap. Even the card art is rollicking.

In July 1991, Sean Astin and then girlfriend Christine Harrell helped Wil Wheaton celebrate his 20th birthday while promoting Toy Soldiers in Japan.
Sean and Christine married a year later.

H. G. Wells and the Beginning of Miniature Wargaming
how H.G. Wells kicked off miniature wargaming #wargaming #miniatures #terrain
Did you know that wargaming, and by extension the tabletop roleplaying hobby, can claim descendence from a H.G. Wells book? In 1913 already well-known novelist H.G. Wells published Little Wars: a game for boys from twelve years of age to one hundred and fifty and for that more intelligent sort of girl who likes boys’ games and books which provided a simple system for wargaming with…

I rewatched Toy Soldiers tonight for the first time in nearly a decade. Most people don’t realize that half a million of my overall approaching 4 million words of fic are devoted to this weird, underappreciated 1991 film.
With this story, time does not necessarily heal all wounds. My heart still shatters.
(Maybe I need to reread The Series/Book of Hours, in the hope that rereading will feel like the writing I did all those years ago to mend what’s broken—or what breaks without end.)

10, 36, 51 for Edward in sensory headcanon? :)
(from the Sensory Headcanons ask game)
10. Something about their physical appearance they're embarrassed about
answered here
36. What was their comfort object or favorite toy in childhood?
Little Edward really loved his toy soldiers (they get lots of page time in the 1918 prologue here). I've never thought much about Edward as a baby, but I imagine he had one favorite soft animal toy and never showed much interest in his other toys. He could only fall asleep with... oh who am I kidding? It was a stupid lamb. He loved this poor little lamb until it was threadbare and refused to let Mother replace it even when it couldn't be restitched or restuffed or patched anymore. Maybe the stinky, bedraggled lamb is still in a storage trunk somewhere in an attic in Chicago...?
51. Which app on their phone do they spend the most time on?
One of Edward's all-time favorite apps is his tuner. He usually keeps it set to guitar mode, but he uses it for all kinds of things. There really isn't any practical reason to know the pitch of That Weird Sound the Downstairs Shower Makes, but why not find out?
And I don't know if there's an app for this per se, but Edward is always fact-checking things. News headlines, viral posts on social media, random things he hears in people's heads... But of course his favorite use for these apps/websites is to correct Rosalie within 15 seconds of her saying something about current events, science, geography, etc. Sometimes it's just good old-fashioned mansplaining, sometimes it's more of a royal scoff. "Imagine thinking _____" is his new favorite way to start a sentence under his breath.
