Mystictober 2024 | Day 3: Ending/Prologue

You weren't sure how to feel about the decisions that led you to this strange apartment as your fingers hovered above the keypad. It was far from your smartest moment, but you hadn't been thinking when you decided to hear this guy out, had you?

You hadn't been thinking when you decided to give this weird guy a chance to tell you the truth.

For once in your life, you just decided to give someone the benefit of the doubt, and where it landed you, you thought. You might've been in a ritzy part of town but that didn't mean you were safe. You'd heard plenty of horror stories about someone thinking they were safe only to realize what could go down behind closed doors while neighbors would be none the wiser.

This guy claimed that he didn't know the person who lived in this particular apartment, but there was nothing that could explain why he knew the code to unlock the door. Even if it was listed in the notes of that person's phone, you would think someone would be smart to change their locks after they lost their phone. Even if he was being an honest man, you didn't know why he didn't just say that.

You hesitated.

He wanted you to unlock the door and go inside, but why? Why did he want you to go inside? Was he waiting for you on the other side of the door? Or, was he just someone who waited for someone to fall for the bait while someone else waited to grab their idiot? It didn't make any sense and you didn't know why you thought it made sense when you first got his message on the bus.

Was it too late to turn around?

Could you try and get out of dodge before someone found you like the cat that caught the canary?

You weren't looking at your phone anymore, even though you knew the stranger was waiting for a reply. You stashed it away in your coat pocket and took one long look at the door before sprinting across the hall to return to the elevator. There'd been a couple of residents down in the lobby when you came inside, but you hadn't seen or heard from anyone since then. That wasn't a good thing, was it?

But, if you couldn't hear anyone, that meant that the likelihood of someone waiting for you had to be low. Even if you were tricked by someone, if there wasn't anyone around to grab you, then you didn't have any time to waste. You could go to the police station and hide until you were certain the guy wouldn't come looking for you, you figured. That was what you should've done, but it was never too late to stop yourself, right?

Your heart began to pound in your ears as you pressed the key for the elevator and it felt like forever as you watched the lever tick from the top floor downward. It felt like it was moving slower than usual but it probably wasn't. It was probably your nerves making the world move so much slower than it was for the elevator to not move fast enough. Clicking the button didn't help, but you weren't sure what else would help you, since your brain could only come up with the flight patterns for victims in scary movies.

The elevator stalled on the floor just above yours.

You cursed, tearing away from the elevator in the direction of the stairs you noticed at the other end of the hallway. You tore around that sharp corner and stumbled down the first couple of steps until your body slammed into something hard. You struggled, but it didn't take much for whatever or rather, whoever, you ran into to hold your attempts at flight at bay.

"I'll—I'll scream," you babbled, thinking of anything you could to try to protect yourself. "I'll scream so loud that the entire building will hear me!"

The voice that replied sounded modified and robotic as it taunted you, "Don't you know? I've been watching you from the start. There isn't a soul in this building but you and me. Did you really think I was going to tell you to get away that easily after you failed to do what I told you to do?"

But, the residents you passed before you—

There was nothing you could do.

It was the end of everything you knew and the start of something out of your control.

Your fate was within his control.

“Well if it isn’t my favorite sister,” Hawke says with a knock, ducking under her bedroom door frame, and leaning on the inside wall without waiting for her answer. 

“What do you want, Garrett?” Bethany asks, without looking up from her desk. He assesses her fondly even as he’s eager for her assistance. Bethany has been murderously studious since her magic manifested when she was nine. Not that there aren’t other benefits, but he knows it’s because she’s terrified of being impressed into the Circle. If she’s widely read she’ll have an easier time of it.

“Oh you know, that little waggle of your fingers you do whenever I get a sucker punch to the face,” he says. Bethany turns to her brother, raising her brows pityingly at the swollen, smarting eye and gestures for him to kneel down so she can reach it. She wanders over to her herbalism workbench for some gauze and grain alcohol.

“What was this one about? Did you make eyes at some lady in front of her man?”

“Well who is it then?” Carver demands, illustrating with great precision the need to keep the information from him in the first place.

“Ren Fernsby,” says Bethany, her chin held out proudly, defiantly.

“Carver, points for demonstrating your concern about her physical security, but first of all Bethany can handle herself, and second of all, there’s more to her well being than just keeping away from the templars,” says Hawke. 

“Sod it. If Ren spills the beans about Bethany when he’s drunk, and Ser Donnall comes sniffing around I’ll know who to blame.”

“I love blame. I’m hoarding it like a big fat dragon,” says Hawke. “Heap it right on top.” Carver rolls his eyes and walks out leaving his two siblings to cast knowing looks.

“Thanks, Gar. You don’t need to do this for me. You’re the best,” she says, popping the seal open on the letter.

Recently I got back into playing Fallout 4 again. Also started watching Harley Quinn, and it got me thinking about how hard it would be to make a Harley Quinn build.

Did a quick search to see if anyone had already done this, and sure enough someone has, but I noticed they gave HQ a 6 in her Intelegence. Don't get me wrong, I get that she is canonically a brilliant person. She graduated valedictorian and was trained in the field of psychoanalysis.

My problem with her being given a 6 in her Intelligence stat, is that the perks you get are more about building Science! gizmos and that just isn't HQ. She's smart but likes to just bash and blow things up. So here is my attempt at making HQ in Fallout 4.

First, her stats will start off as S:4, P:4, E:3, C:1, I:2, A:9, and L:5.

Early on you have access to the baby book that gives you one more stat point, that we'll put in Charisma to bring that up to 2. Likewise, the Perception bobblehead is early enough that we can go ahead and count that as being at 5 instead of 4.

You'll note that Intelegence is only at 2, and the only reason it's that high is that she does have medical training, so we can put perk points into Medic. Nothing else though from that perk line though makes sense for our HQ so no need to have it higher.

But because she is a smart character canonically, we give her the 5 in luck so we can give her Idiot Savant. That skill is specifically described as "You're not stupid! Just... different." and the way she is different is she's fricking bonkers.

Another benefit of having that 5-luck is we get access to Bloody Mess, and you can sure bet however HQ goes about murdering someone she is going to create a bit of a mess.

The 9 in Agility should be obvious as she is an acrobat. We'll want to pick up both Blitz, Moving Target, Action Girl, Sneak, and Ninja from this line. Though keep in mind she is a more in-your-face sort of villain so sneak and ninja are lower priorities.

Endurance is at three because she is chronically immune to toxins and can take a bit of a beating in a fight. So we want things like Toughness, Lead Belly, and Life-Giver. Rad resistance would have been nice but is too far down the Endurance to get early for this build.

Perception is where it's at to give us access to both the Locksmith and the Demolition Expert perks. I see HQ as more the sort to just kick open a door instead of picking the lock, but as the game doesn't give us that option, she needed ways of opening doors that would otherwise get in her way. Likewise, she would not likely spend much time picking the lock of a trunk, and would just smash it open... but again the game doesn't give us that option.

Her Strength of 4 is because her primary weapon of choice is a big old hammer or baseball bat and we want access to both Big Leagues and Blacksmith.

Lastly, that brings us to why we want Charisma to be at two, and that's to give us access to the Black Widow perk. Watch the cartoon, I think you'll agree that she hits men a bit harder with her baseball bat. I'm not even sure I've seen her hit a woman yet with her bat... no wait I can think of one. But only one off the top of my head (mind you I've only just finished watching the first season).

A long-term goal for this character would be to build up her Charisma after getting her core perks so she can access the Intimidate perk.
