Hearing the news: Tommy Bratton 7-15-23
When I get a phone call after 9:00 on a Saturday night it’s not good. Everyone who knows the pastor’s life, knows that Saturday nights are off limits. So, when my phone announced my good friend Anne Raybon was on the line, I knew it was bad news. Paul and Anne Raybon are friends-made-family. Their son, Will, is a year older than our daughter, Trellace; their daughter, Kate, is the age of our son,…

tl;dr: WHAT. THE. FUCK.
Buckle up, everyone, this is one hell of a ride.
Open on Harvey entering the living room just as Donna’s getting off the phone with her father, plus two cups of coffee to set us up for this delightfully domestic exchange:
“Is that for me?” “Why, yes it is. A handsome coffee for my handsome man.” “What do you want?” “Why do I have to want something to give you a compliment?” “You don’t, but you do. You know you’re not the only one who can do that.” “You heard me on the phone with my father, didn’t you?” “Okay, you’re the only one who can do that.”
So…here’s the thing about this. Harvey and Donna have known each other for nineteen-ish years. They’ve been dating for, at most, a few weeks. Every single time they’ve talked about their relationship status, it’s been in glowing terms; “I’m finally where I’m supposed to be,” “We both are” (s09e01), “She’s the most important person in my life” (s09e02), etc. Now Donna is gearing up to propose an activity that’s important to her that she knows Harvey won’t want to do—she wants to tell her father that they’re a couple—and her lead-in is…preparing him a cup of coffee and calling him handsome. If she’s trying to butter him up, that’s some pretty weak sauce, and if not…
Harvey responding to such a gesture by asking what she wants is a red flag all on its own (he’s suspicious when she does things for him, even something as small as a cup of coffee), but since he heard her on the phone, I’m gonna give this one a pass. The real problem lies where it always does on this show: Lack of communication. Harvey and Donna have been incredibly close friends for nineteen years and she knows how important family is to him; this is a serious thing that she knows she’s going to get some resistance to, she should be able to ask him to mend fences with her father without making it some kind of game. Instead she resorts to a tactic more reminiscent of a teenager easing the way for a bad report card than a romantic partner seeking a personal favor, and I know that being a couple is different from being friends, but they’ve known each other for so long, she should have a better sense of how to handle this kind of thing. (Then again, this is Donna of “accost Harvey in the dead of night and kiss him to figure out my romantic uncertainty even though I know he has a girlfriend and is terrified of becoming unfaithful” fame, so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised.)
Lest you think I’m making mountains out of molehills, the conversation ends with her dismissal to “Put [his] big boy pants on and find [them] a restaurant, or [her] father won’t be the only Paulsen [he has] to worry about.” So. Like. The “partnership” aspect of this partnership is really coming along.
We’re afforded the opportunity to wash our hands of this unpleasantness with a mostly-good exchange between Faye and Katrina, during which Faye requests her to adapt a new code of conduct for the firm and my only little nitpick is that Faye declares that she made the right decision in assigning the task to Katrina after Katrina says she’ll only do it if Faye accepts her draft “wholesale or not at all,” which just seems like a weird thing for Faye to want her to demand. Then Alex has an eight-years-ago flashback to flesh out that whole “Tommy Bratton framed him for covering up a murder conspiracy at Danbury” thing from Season 7 as some guy named Craig, who was apparently a coworker of Alex’s during his time at Bratton Gould, shows up in the present day to put the screws to him to accept an offer already on the table in Specter Litt Wheeler Williams’ case against Panasonic (Panasonic, really?) in exchange for not letting Alex’s involvement “get out.” Alex seems surprised by this development, but it sure does explain those stoical looks he’s been putting on at random foreshadowy intervals this season.
I think the next scene is supposed to be some kind of comic relief as Louis storms into a conference room and lets loose a generic and expletive-laden rant against the bewildered man and woman seated at the table; they inform him that they’re Susan’s parents, and he quickly backpedals with some “this is how not to behave” bullshit and tells them his name is Alex Williams. This would be hideously inappropriate behavior even if they were opposing counsel on whatever case he thought he was handling; the moment Louis opened with “Alright, you sons of bitches,” I was sure it was another one of his delusional episodes, but no, apparently he’s just got terrible business etiquette. Not to worry, though, because all of this is just a means to segue into Louis moaning to Gretchen that he needs her back because his current temp, Norma’s granddaughter Norma III, is grossly incompetent.
Back to the A plot. Donna and her father are out to breakfast where she giddily divulges her relationship status, and Mr. James Paulsen greets the news a little more tepidly than she was expecting. She prompts him to voice his misgivings, and he says that from everything she’s told him over the years, Harvey sounds like a pretty selfish guy. (Which of course begs the question of what she’s been telling him, but I don’t think we’re going to dwell on that. Also James has met him; he can form his own firsthand opinion.) In another example of truly stellar communication skills, Donna exclaims that she told Harvey her father would be happy for her when she told him about them (point of order, she said he would be happy for them), and he asks if they can start the breakfast over. She mutters a petulant “Sure, Dad. Sure,” and that’s all we’re going to get of that for now.
Flashback alert: It seems that the History of Craig is that he really, really wanted the Masterson account that Bratton gave to Alex (to frame him for covering up the conspiracy) and they had a falling out when Alex didn’t tell him about it. In the present day, Alex asks Samantha to take the deal in the Panasonic case because Craig is his friend, but she immediately figures out that this is about the Masterson thing (which he thought “had gone away,” so maybe all those thousand yard stares were about something else) and tells him to tell Rosalie the whole story.
Faye shows up in Donna’s office for a little plot integration, calling to attention the fact that it’s “a clear conflict” for “two of the five members of management [to] have undue influence over each other”; as Harvey is a senior partner, his vote is more important than Donna’s (which is exactly what I said), but if he wants to give up his vote, that’s fine with her as long as they’re not both going to have one. Far be it from me to laud Suits for not being sexist, but this is a decent, if probably accidental, little sidestep; as COO, Donna is less important to the firm than Harvey the senior partner, but Faye’s problem isn’t that Donna has a voice at the managerial table, it’s that two of the managers are dating and their impartiality is potentially compromised. We’ve even seen an example of this play out already when Harvey sided with Donna against Louis when he tried to fire Benjamin; they talked it out, yeah, but it happened once and it could easily happen again. Good for Faye.
Donna, it may not surprise you to learn, does not so much share this perspective. Harvey pops in to ask her how breakfast with her father went and she takes the opportunity to wildly misplace her anger as she bemoans the fact that she wants a relationship with someone who gets along with her father, and then bitches at Harvey for not telling his mother about them yet. She closes out with the denouement that if he’s really willing to put her first, he’ll fix his relationship with her father, and if he can’t, her father might be right that they shouldn’t be together.
What is this, the fourth time so far in this episode alone that a lack of communication has caused major problems for these people? I’m getting sick of this trope, guys, what else you got?
I’m already regretting that question as Louis accosts Katrina in the women’s restroom (yes, the women’s restroom) to demand that she include a rider in the new code of conduct putting personnel reassignments under the purview of the name partners. Katrina quite correctly points out that this belongs in the bylaws, but promises she’ll think about it.
Suits continues its developing trend of trying to cram as many returning guest stars as possible into this season as Harvey calls Lily to tell her that, one, Donna was the “very special person” credited with their reconciliation back in Season 6; two, they’re seeing each other; and three, “[he hasn’t] exactly told her yet, but she’s the one.” Lily congratulates him, having learned about Donna from Marcus; seems they’re both big fans, how cute. Harvey admits that he and Donna’s father have bad blood, and Lily tells him to make a gesture to demonstrate his generous heart.
Back up a second.
Harvey and Donna have been friends for nineteen years. They spent about eighteen years and eleven months of that time going out of their way to clarify that they weren’t a couple and/or that they knew they were better off as friends. A big emotional event abruptly convinced Harvey that he wants to be with her. Three-ish weeks later, their relationship has hardly been smooth sailing, and now, on the heels of yet another miscommunication-laden spat, out of fucking nowhere, Donna is “the one,” and apparently has been for at least a little while.
What the fuck is going on?
No, I’m serious. This relationship, rife with conflict, has shot along at lightning speed. They’re apparently spending more nights together than not, but as far as I can tell, they’ve been on one date (which started off super awkwardly, by the way), and suddenly she’s Harvey’s soulmate. His bossy, confrontational, unforthcoming soulmate. Am I really supposed to believe that this, this is what Harvey’s been looking for all his life? Or is it just that pounds upon pounds of external pressure have convinced him that it should be?
Food for thought.
Oncoming B plot: Eight years ago, Alex told Rosalie about the Masterson thing while it was going on, but apparently he never got around to the kompromat part, because back in the present day, he’s finally coming clean about all of it, including Craig’s current attempt to blackmail him. Rosalie is not a fan of either the original event or the fact that he took so long to tell her about it, which, yeah, that’s fair.

On June 27th, 1986, Albert went missing from Sugar Land, Texas. He may not have known his name or his address. Albert was classified as disabled.
Joseph Wayne Daggett
Joseph Daggett, also known as Joe, was born on September 18th, 1960. He is listed as having been 5’10, and 185 pounds. Joseph has green eyes, red hair, and freckles. He had a full beard and mustache at the time of his disappearance. Joseph was last seen wearing a black felt cowboy hat, a white long sleeved western shirt with grey pinstripes, brown cowboy boots, and wheat colored Wrangler jeans. He may have been wearing a gold box square link necklace, a gold Seiko watch with a white face, a gold Ulvade Jr. College 1981 graduation ring, a gold horseshoe ring with 11 diamonds, a solid brass custom belt buckle, and was carrying a Morgan Silver Dollar money clip.
Joe was last seen on March 1st, 1988 in Fort Stockton, Texas. Another source states that he was last seen in Pecos, Texas. (The towns are an hour away from each other). He was last seen between 22:30 and 23:00, when he left a friend’s house (or girlfriend’s), heading for his ranch home (or grandmother’s). Joseph’s pickup truck was found at the Midland International Airport, still loaded with feed. The location is about an hour and a half away from where he was last seen (In Fort Stockton).
Foul play is possible. During the first few months after he disappeared, there were horseback riders that searched several locations for his body. In 2008, authorities searched for Joe’s body again, but found nothing useful. In 2009, police arrested a Lightsey Nathan Saul in New Mexico, and charged him conspiracy to commit capital murder in Daggett’s case. Two other suspects, George McIntyre and Robert Ezell, were later indicted on the same charges. It is believed that Saul asked an acquaintance to murder Joseph Daggett because Joe was allegedly having an affair with Saul’s wife.
In 2011, Saul was found guilty and sentenced to 60 years in prison, with the charges against McIntyre and Ezell still pending. No-one has been charged with the actual causation of Joseph’s death. In 2010, George McIntyre was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child, and had a bail of 300,000 dollars (USD).
Joseph is considered deceased, at least by his family, with a burial site in East Hill Cemetery, Fort Stockton, Texas.
Investigating Agency: Pecos County Sheriff's Office 432-336-3521
I will discuss Joseph's case in more detail in a future post.

City Council members host Hurricane Harvey recovery appreciation events
City staff, community organizations and supporters who helped with Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts attended appreciation brunches held in their honor throughout the City. Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam Medrano and Councilmembers Jennifer S. Gates, and Tennell Atkins held appreciation events at the three City recreation centers that served as temporary shelters for evacuees displaced by Hurricane Harvey on Thursday, November 30 and Friday, December 1.
“It’s a way of showing gratitude for our team of workers,” said Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Medrano, who attended the Samuell Grand Recreation Center event. “These are good people who worked tirelessly to help prepare the centers ahead of our guests arriving from Houston and the surrounding areas.”
Other events took place at the Walnut Hill Recreation Center on Thursday and Tommie Allen Recreation Center and were attended by their respective councilmembers, Councilmember Jennifer Gates and Councilmember Tennell Atkins. Councilmember Gates also presented certificates of appreciation to Parks and Recreation Staff, joined by District 13 Park Board Representative Calvert Collins-Bratton.

#Suits - Season 7, Episode 8 "100", Review/Recap
Rating: 9/10
(Air Date 8/30/2017)
Episode 708 of Suits was directed by our very own Patrick J. Adams. He did a fantastic job directing and starring in the episode titled “100”; it is so titled because this was the show’s 100th episode.
I will say this first…I am a Darvey fan, and I was disappointed that there were no scenes at all of Harvey and Donna together, especially since it was their 100th episode and all the hype they've shown about Donna and Harvey. If there had been, the rating I’d have given would have been 10. But alas, no Darvey scenes, they only get a nine. But overall it is was a good episode!
It opens like it has done a few times with Harvey and Paul on the phone flirting with each other. She asks him out to dinner, he accepts. Then they cut to Donna in her apartment (in her pajamas), and she calls her old boyfriend Mark. Yes, the same Mark we saw in a flashback last week. They agree to meet for lunch.
Next scene we see Mike going to Harvey’s apartment. He tells Harvey he knows all about Alex and he wants to help. Next Harvey goes to see Robert Zane with the prison case. Yep, you guessed it…he is passing the case to Zane. Zane tells him he'll take the case, but he doesn't want any crap from Harvey because he'll do what needs to be done to the case, however way he sees fit.
Louis gets a bunch of folders with potential associates from Columbia. When he finds out that they got short changed, he marches down to the recruiter’s office at Columbia and comes face to face with Sheila! Yes, the same Sheila that broke off her engagement with Louis! She tells him she’s engaged to be married! She left Harvard and moved to the city because her fiancé was from the city. If you remember, she won't leave Harvard for Louis!
While Donna and Mark have lunch, he tells her he’s been married for the past three years, but the marriage is not a happy one. Donna tells him she is not the answer to his problem after he tells her that he thinks of Donna all the time.
While Mike and Harvey try to figure out a way to have Frank Gallow not testify Rachel interrupts with a plan of her own. Use pictures of her that Frank “sent” saying that Frank was threatening Robert Zane with the photos. Harvey doesn't want to do it but he does use the pictures, and the judge agrees that Frank will not testify. Robert Zane is completely upset to the point where he wanted to hit Harvey in the men’s room (even pushed Harvey against the wall)! Mike stops the fight and tells Robert it was all Rachel’s idea.
Frank Gallow is murdered in prison! That’s right Suitors; Frank Gallow is dead!
Mark calls Donna and asks to see her before he goes back to Connecticut. Donna doesn’t know what to do; but after seeing Paula in Harvey’s office, pangs of jealousy creep up. (Guess the feelings don't go away). As Paula leaves Rachel arrives and asks Donna if she wants to go out the next night for drinks. Donna tells her that she has plans that night.
Louis gets a call from Sheila. It seems that Sheila wants one last night with Louis before she gets married! Louis agrees! Their bantering of the sexual escapades they would do was hilarious especially when Louis hangs up, and Rachel walks in all concerned about Louis when she tells him to come with her, and he says "I'm not going anywhere ."
Alex goes to see his old boss Tommy Bratton. He tells Tommy he wants the affidavit he signed, Tommy laughs, but the laugh is short lived when Harvey shows up with a note signed by Roger Shapiro that states Tommy gave the order to kill Frank Gallow. Tommy bulks but eventually signs his resignation and gives back Alex’s affidavit.
As Louis goes to see Sheila, Donna goes to see Mark. Louis goes into Sheila’s room. Donna, on the other hand, tells Mark, “I can’t do this.” And walks away! Meanwhile, Harvey has dinner with Paula at his favorite restaurant. She hands him a small box and tells him it’s a gift for their two-month anniversary. (How sweet). He, in turn, gives her his apartment key.
Next episode (709) is scheduled for September 6th and is entitled "Shame."
Until next week Suitors!
Gabriel Macht as the handsome Harvey Specter
Sarah Rafferty as Donna Paulson arriving at ex-boyfriend Mark's hotel room
Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman) and Donna sharing a moment
Preview of next week's episode

#Suits - Season 7, Episode 7 “Full Disclosure”, Review/Recap
Rating: 10/10
(Air Date 8/23/2017)
Suits episode 707 “Full Disclosure” is filled with lots of flashback scenes which helps to fill in the blanks for what is currently happening at Pearson Specter Litt! In my humble opinion, this is one of the best episodes! The flashbacks help in understanding why some of the characters are like they are too. Remember the Harvey/Louis rift from season 4’s “Fork in the Road” episode? That’s where Louis had proposed to Harvey that they convince the managing partner at the time (Daniel Hardman) that they both should be junior partners. Hardman had wanted to hire a senior partner, but Harvey and Louis on a united front convinced him to promote them both as junior partners. Daniel gave them a project and had said that depending on the outcome both would become junior partners. But Hardman played them both, and Louis betrayed Harvey, and the outcome was that only Louis was made junior partner.
In tonight’s “continuation” (of sorts) flashback we get to see how pissed Harvey really was, not only at Louis but the firm and especially at Jessica!
Current day: As Alex opens up to Harvey telling him why and how he’s in the position he’s in, we find out (thanks to flashbacks) that Harvey had something to do with it.
Flashback: Harvey and Alex play poker. Alex tries to convince Harvey to come to his firm (Bratton & Gould). Harvey seriously considers it when Louis sabotages his chance of becoming a junior partner. Alex tells him they could both be junior partners with an excellent chance of becoming senior partners and soon.
Another flashback: Donna walks into Harvey’s office and asking him not to bother her for one full night because she has a date with her boyfriend Mark and they will be celebrating their six-month anniversary. Harvey smiles and seems to roll his eyes at her, but he agrees to leave her alone.
In yet another flashback: Jessica warns Louis not to let his new junior partner position go to his head then tells Harvey to work with Louis because Hardman wants them working together. (Suitors know that’s because Hardman wants to rub Harvey’s face in the fact that Louis is a junior partner but he is not!) Harvey complains that Jessica did not have his back against Hardman. Jessica, a true queen if there ever was one, basically tells Harvey to suck it up!
Present day: Harvey, after hearing what is hanging over Alex’s head tries to pay off Alex’s client (Masterson Construction). Masterson is involved in the prison scheme; Harvey hands them a check as an apology for breaking their word, but the client says no deal. They would prefer to keep their interests aligned in case Mike tries to open the case again. Mike meanwhile goes to see Frank Gallo who tells him that he and other inmates at his old prison were used to building prisons for Reform Corp and Masterson Construction. Mike takes this information and goes to see computer genius Benjamin to see if he can get some information. Benjamin doesn’t like it, but he does it anyway for Mike. They finally find the smoking gun so to speak! It turns out Alex got a waiver from the state to allow the two companies to supplement the work with inmates. Unfortunately, the inmates turned out to be doing all the work. (In case you are wondering…that was the illegal part – it’s called “defrauding the state.”) Rachel tells him Harvey could fire Mike. But Mike doesn’t seem to care about that, he just wants to do what is right and plans to redact Masterson’s name off the documents and hand the documents to Anita Gibbs so that she can prosecute them. Unfortunately for Mike, Harvey finds out (thanks to Rachel), and Harvey signs Reform Corp., as a client. That’s right! Everything Mike has is not privileged and cannot be used. Mike goes screaming at Harvey. Harvey says he “owes” Alex because years ago he screwed him over (by not taking the job Alex had lined up for him). Mike yells some more, and Harvey threatens to fire him if he doesn’t drop this once and for all. Harvey tells Mike he can’t tell him what they have over Alex because he doesn’t trust Mike.
Flashback: Harvey tries to work with Louis, but in true Louis manner (yeah, him letting the “junior partner power” go to his head and it makes him more of an ass-hole). Harvey decides to cut Louis out of the case and has Donna set up a hearing sooner rather than later and not tell Louis. Well, Jessica finds out! She shows up at the hearing and kicks Harvey off the case. This embarrasses Harvey big time; he’s already pissed off at Jessica, and this is the last straw! He goes to Alex and tells him he’ll jump to Bratton Gould if he’s paid more than any other junior associate. Alex agrees to pave the way and convince Tommy. He makes Harvey give his word that he’ll take the job because he’s going to have to put his ass on the line for him. Harvey agrees. When he tells Donna, she’s not thrilled because he didn’t discuss it with her first. She brings up Harvey during her date with Mark. They discuss Harvey and her job with Harvey. He feels as though everything Donna does revolves around Harvey. Donna doesn’t agree of course. She asks him what he wants her to do, and Mark says he wants her to promise she won’t follow him. Donna says she can’t do that.
Meanwhile, in the Flashback Jessica tells Louis he needs to see a psychiatrist (or she’ll fire him) and gives him a business card. Louis bulks but in the end, he goes to the psychiatrist, and we finally get to meet Dr. Lipschitz! They talk and discuss some of Louis’ problems even though Louis says he’s never coming back to see the doctor. Harvey goes to see Jessica and royally pisses her off. He accuses her of not having his back and not promoting him. She reminds him she picked him out of the mailroom and paid for him to go to Harvard, but tells him to go ahead and leave if he wants. So Harvey gives his notice. When Louis finds out Harvey is leaving he tells Jessica it’s all his fault and to not let Harvey go. He begs Jessica to make Harvey stay. Jessica goes to see Harvey, and she tells him that she told Hardman she would leave the firm if Harvey weren't the next associate promoted. So, of course, he’ll stay, but now he has to break his promise to Alex, who ends up in a bad position at Bratton Gould. We also find out that Donna breaks up with Mark (because of Harvey), and Louis calls Dr. Lipschitz and begins to see him on a regular basis.
Back to present day at Pearson Specter Litt: Of course, Donna questions helping Alex versus helping Mike. Mike is family after all. Harvey tells Donna what’s up with Alex. Meanwhile, Alex goes to Mike and comes clean: Harvey turned down Bratton’s offer years ago which put Alex in the doghouse. All he received were losing shit-type cases. Then one day Bratton comes to him with a case. This case would help Alex get back into the good graces with the firm. All Alex had to do was get a waiver for Masterson Construction which Alex did. But then Alex found out from a correctional officer that an inmate died on a job site, shortly after that the guard was murdered by an inmate. Alex told his boss about the collusion, Bratton told him, they had framed Alex for it. Every bonus, fees…etc., he received since taking the case, was tied to the collusion. Alex had no options but to go along with the shady dealings because he was married and had a daughter, and he didn’t want his daughter to grow up without a father. The problem now is that Alex is even more screwed because he agreed to take full responsibility for the collusion to stop Bratton from coming after Pearson Specter Litt’s clients.
So the question is what Mike will do? Tune in next week Suitors for the show’s 100th episode! Episode 8 - “Mirror Mirror” - premieres on August 30, 2017. Until next week Suitors!
