“Rock of Ages” show #798
Tumblr media
If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that I have quite the unhealthy obsession with Rock of Ages. I call it my “guilty pleasure” musical because at its core it’s a silly, simple, and crude show. But the music, the humor, the complete ownership of how ridiculous it is leaves nothin’ but a good time to be had by audiences who like that sorta thing. Such is the case with the 10th Anniversary production currently playing at New World Stages. The Broadway production’s director Kristin Hanggi and choreographer Kelly Devine reunite for the 80’s rock jukebox musical with the same flair and energy they did back in 2009. With only a few updates to Chris D’Arienzo’s book, and one added song, Rock of Ages fans will be absolutely pleased with what awaits them in this awesome revival.

At the center of the story are Drew and Sherrie, two hopeful performers who move to L.A. in order to pursue their dreams. Drew, played by CJ Eldred, wants to be a rocker but is currently bar backing at the legendary Bourbon Room bar; and Sherrie, played by Kirsten Scott, wants to be an actress, even though she thinks fellatio means an accent rather than an act. Both end up as co-workers, slam into the friend zone, and eventually feel heartbreak and disappointment before realizing their true happiness is with each other. Aww, so sweet! Of course it’s not that cute and tidy, because a whole supporting cast of misfits and personalities invade the Bourbon Room and Sunset Strip with their own agendas and stories. Mr. Eldred and Ms. Scott are fantastic in their respective roles, delivering the rockin’ vocals which permeate their characters’ journeys. Mr. Eldred is in great sound in “I Wanna Rock,” infuses some endearing first-date jitters to “Waitin’ for a Girl Like You” opposite an equally anxious, but slightly hornier Sherrie, and pairs with Ms. Scott to deliver an absolute smash in their turn at “High Enough.” Ms. Scott’s belt and squelt are tops in a melancholy yet emotionally revealing “More Than Words,” a roof shaking “Harden My Heart,” and leads a flawless duet with Mr. Eldred in “I Hate Myself For Loving You.” And for what it’s worth, their chemistry is instant and believable from first glance to final bow.

Original Broadway cast member, Mitchell Jarvis, reprises his role as Lonny, the Bourbon Room’s sound guy and the show’s narrator. Mr. Jarvis kicks off the party with a stellar leading of “Cum on Feel the Noize” and teams up with Matt Ban as Dennis, owner of the Bourbon Room, for a show stopping turn at “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” where two co-workers realize there’s more to their friendship than just a working relationship. Mr. Ban’s gruff rock tenor fits likes a glove in his solo bits in “Cum on Feel the Noize,” “Too Much Time on My Hands,” and “The Final Countdown.” The German father-son villainous duo, Hertz and Franz, are delivered finely by Tom Galantich and Dane Biren, respectively. Mr. Galantich’s vocals aren’t up to the level of the rest of the cast, but his tough love acting chops are right in the wheelhouse of Hertz’s persona. Mr. Biren delivers a show halting performance that he and Tiffany Engen, as Regina, are expected to give in “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” one of the show’s best uses of an 80’s hit. Ms. Engen’s animated fervor is consistent and altogether enjoyable in her pursuit of stopping the German contractors and saving her beloved Sunset Strip. PJ Griffith, as rock star playboy Stacee Jaxx, is an incredibly charismatic anti-hero you love to hate. Mr. Griffith’s vocals are nothing to hate, though, as he absolutely slays “Dead or Alive” and his portions of “Heat of the Moment.” Jeanette Bayardelle, matron of the gentleman’s club where Sherrie ends up working for a bit, is a presence and voice made for the musical theatre stage. Ms. Bayardelle’s leadership of the newly added “Cherry Pie” (replacing “Any Way You Want It” for those keeping score at home) is stellar. Her contemplatively driven “Every Rose Has its Thorn” kicks off the all-call rock ballad with one of the few quieter, heartfelt moments of the show.

With all of Ms. Devine’s sexy, head banging, demanding choreography intact, the ensemble has their work cut out for them, but they execute it all with precision and an intoxicating rock energy, with featured mention of the other original Broadway cast member, Katie Webber, as Waitress #1. Beowulf Boritt’s scenic design still gives off that dive bar vibe, and Jason Lyons’ lighting design handles the balance between book-scene intimacy and concert-like production number with fluidity and well-calibrated illumination. Having just been extended, you have even more time to catch this good time, but why delay? Go book your tickets, squeeze into those acid-washed jeans and run on over to New World Stages to catch this cast in action!

Julie & Julia (2009)
Biography, Drama, Romance |
Julie & Julia is a American comedy-drama film written and directed by Nora Ephron starring Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci, and Chris Messina. The film contrasts the life of chef Julia Child in the early years of her culinary career with the life of young New Yorker Julie Powell, who aspires to cook all 524 recipes in Child’s cookbook in 365 days, a challenge she described on her popular blog that made her a published author.
Ephron’s screenplay is based on two books: My Life in France, Child’s autobiography written with Alex Prud’homme, and a memoir by Powell, Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen. Both of these books were written and published between 2004 and 2006.
Julia Child – 1950s
In the 1950s, Julia Child, an enthusiastic and unabashed woman, moves to Paris with her diplomat husband, Paul Child. She attends Le Cordon Bleu to learn French cooking, and is initially met with skepticism as she is the only woman in the class. Madame Elizabeth Brassart, the proprietress of the school and Child clash. She is undaunted however, and begins collaborating on a book about French cooking for American housewives with Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle.
Julie Powell – 2002
In 2002, Julie Powell is a young writer with an unpleasant job at the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation’s call center, where she answers telephone calls from victims of the September 11 attacks and members of the general public complaining about the LMDC’s controversial plans for rebuilding the World Trade Center. She is discontented with this, and is disheartened at watching her acquaintances succeed in their own professions. She is happily married to Eric Powell, a writer for a magazine.

Writers: Nora Ephron (screenplay), Julie Powell (book), Julia Child (book), Alex Prud’homme (book)
