The Ukrainian Paralympic team has secured 126 licenses for this year’s Games. The national team comprises 235 members, including 140 athletes – 96 men, 44 women – and coaches, doctors, and masseurs. In comparison, Ukraine had 138 competitors at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. For the first time, the Ukrainian team will compete in 17 sports, including two debut events: boccia (pairs and individual events) and handcycle racing.

who with their 13 medals pushed Greece up in the rankings 19 places compared to Tokyo 2020. It should be noted that with the (awful) system of counting only the golds, Greece is now in the 33th place whereas it is in the 23th place if the total of medals is counted.

Gold medallists:

Nasos Gkavelas (and his guide Yannis Nyfantopoulos) - Men's 100m - T11. With a time of 11.02, it is his second golden medal in a row after the Paralympiad of Tokyo 2020.

Athanasios Konstantinidis - Men's Shot Put - F32. At 54 years of age, this is one of the two medals he won in these Paralympic Games.

Emmanouil Stefanoudakis - Men's Javelin Throw - F54. This is his third medal after the bronze in London and the golden in Rio!

Eleni Papastamatopoulou - Taekwondo - Women K44 +65kg. Not only Greece got its first medals in Tawkwondo but it was in both light and heavy categories as well!

Brazil thrives and says goodbye to the 2024 Paralympic Games in the top five for the first time

Athletics and swimming stand out in the competition; both sports celebrate historic records

Brazil ended its participation in the Paris Paralympics among the top five countries on the medal table, beating its own podium record and celebrating the best ranking ever. There were 89 medals: 23 golds, 25 silvers and 38 bronzes. The country surpassed the number of golds in a single edition. The previous record – 22 medals – was set in Tokyo 2020.

The Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB, in Portuguese) expected these results, which foresaw good numbers for this competition. In the last four editions, the country had been in the top ten, which gave the CPB an optimistic projection for this edition, according to Rafael Reis, a specialist in Paralympic sport and doctoral student at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR, in Portuguese).

“They worked with some figures, including for the financing of Paralympic sports. So, it was more or less what the committee expected,” he says. 

In addition to the record number of podiums, Brazil celebrated two other historic achievements. The country beat the 200-medal mark in athletics, with Thiago Paulino's silver in the weight throw; and 150 in swimming, also with a silver medal. The winner was swimmer Gabriel Bandeira, in the men’s 100-meter backstroke. In total, Brazil returned home with 35 medals in swimming and 26 in athletics.

Miraitowa (ミライトワ) (above left) is the official mascot of the 2020 Summer Olympics, and Someity (ソメイティ) (above right) is the official mascot of the 2020 Summer Paralympics, held in Tokyo and postponed to 2021. "To make this the most innovative and technologically advanced Games in history, Tokyo 2020 and Toyota are working to develop a 'mascot robot'. In addition to welcoming athletes and guests to official venues, Toyota is currently considering plans for a new way for the Games to be enjoyed by children in Japan, via the mascot robot. The mascot robot will both allow expressions of arm movements via a remote-location robot, and share force-feedback from interactions. Via a camera mounted on the robot’s head, it can recognize people nearby, and once recognized, use its eyes to respond with/show a variety of expressions. By equipping the robot with miniature joint units across its entire body, the robot offers flexibility when being controlled, and the users can operate the robot safely and with high operational functionality."

Compared to humanoid robots based on human proportions, such as the T-HR3 already in development by Toyota, they had extremely large heads and short limbs. While such stocky body shapes may add to the characters’ charm, a head heavy in relation to the body would sway with every motion and make the robot’s movements unstable.
