What’s the Difference Between a Podiatrist and a Chiropodist?
When patients need specialized foot and ankle care, doctors generally recommend that they see a podiatrist. Podiatry is the focused branch of medicine that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of foot problems and conditions related to the lower legs.
Podiatrists treat everything from bunions to infected toenails, and patients are guaranteed to receive the best answer for their foot problems from a podiatrist. But there is another term that many people – particularly older patients – still use for foot doctors: chiropodist.
So what exactly is a chiropodist and what’s the difference between podiatrist and chiropodist work? Simply put, there is actually no technical difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist in how they work; “chiropodist” and “chiropody” are the outdated terms for doctors that specialize in foot problems. The terms were respectively replaced by “podiatrist” and “podiatry” around the second half of the 20th century.
Podiatry and Chiropody: A History
Medical healthcare based on science is predominantly a modern phenomenon, and specialty healthcare with doctors that study and care on certain parts of the body is even more so.
The first licensed physicians who specialized in the study and care of the lower legs and feet came about in the 19th century, with the first officially recognized medical organization for feet doctors established in 1895 in New York, and this was known as the first society of chiropodists (this organization is still running today, although it is now known as the NYSPMA, or the New York State Podiatric Medical Association).
The first official school for chiropody was opened in 1911, and in the UK chiropody became widely recognized when the London Foot Hospital was established in 1912, with a chiropody school opened later in 1919.
In Australia, professional chiropody organizations started appearing from the 1920s onwards. Doctors who specialized in foot pain were still known as chiropodists by World War II, with the US degree for foot doctors known as a Doctor of Surgical Chiropody.
The Change From “Chiropody” to “Podiatry”
So why was there a sudden change from “chiropody” to “podiatry”? While both terms mean the same thing – and some countries (such as Canada) still officially use the term chiropody to describe foot and ankle medical care – countries like the US and the UK led the way in the 1960s to the transition to “podiatry” and “podiatrists” for two reasons:
Confusion with Chiropractors: Around the 1950s and 1960s, chiropractic medicine was growing in popularity, and chiropodists were being confused with chiropractors. To avoid continued confusion with chiropractors, it was decided that they would adopt the term “podiatry” for podiatrists.
Clearer Root: As a term, “podiatry” more accurately describes foot and ankle care than “chiropody”. “Chiropody” is made up of two roots – “chiro” which means hands, and “pod” which means foot in Greek. The roots of “podiatry” come from “pod” and “iatros”, which means “physician” in Greek. Changing the word from “chiropody” allowed them to better embrace the modern reality of the podiatric profession, when it had become a recognized branch of modern medical care rather than an unofficial specialization performed by certain physicians.
Can You Get Proper Foot Care from a Chiropodist?
While the US, the UK, and most other countries around the world have totally stopped using the term “chiropodist” some countries such as Canada and also smaller organizations still use chiropody. So can you also expect the same level of foot healthcare from chiropody?
This may vary on a case-by-case podiatrist basis, but generally, licensed podiatrists are trained and educated to do the following:
Perform podiatric surgery related to the foot and ankles
Perform microsurgeries and reconstructive surgeries
Perform physical examinations and study medical histories
Diagnose and treat conditions like ingrown toenails, flat feet, cracked heels, Athlete’s foot
Administer anesthetics and also sedation for conditions related to the foot and ankles
Prescribe medications
Interpret X-rays and also other medical and imaging studies, giving podiatric advice and diagnosis
Perform certain physical therapy
Prescribe, order, and fit prosthetics, casts, insoles, and orthotics
Diagnose and treat sports-related injuries, including setting fractures
If you aren’t sure about a doctor who refers to him or herself as a chiropodist, our advice is to make sure that they have the proper education and certification to perform the tasks of podiatrists.
For the most part, the difference between podiatrists and chiropodists is one of semantics – doctors who refer to themselves as podiatrists and chiropodists should be able to provide proper foot pain treatment.

RAY CAESAR
Many call Ray Caesar the Godfather of Digital Art, and his process is completely digital from its beginning through the printing stage. Though he is certainly seminal in his oeuvre, it is his fantastically disturbing content that has made him a cult favorite, from collectors like Madonna and Elton John to the population at large who not only know of his heartache, but embrace it. Caesar frequently talks of suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder. Combine this with his time working in Art and Photography Department of The Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto and you are faced with a sea of controversial imagery.
“When you grow up in a dark place filled with fear and pain and cruelty, there is a tendency to find hidden places of pleasure and beauty within that world of the night,” mentions the artist. “I have always thought that the greater potential for evil and darkness that there is an even greater potential for good and light. There is a natural inner drive within the human mind to find balance in any situation and find ways of coping in a sea of turbulence. We are all stronger than we give ourselves credit for and when our conscious mind cannot handle something overwhelming in the darkness of the real world, our subconscious becomes very creative and takes its own path into an inner light. For me art is an expression of living in that duality and a visual voice to express fear and rage and sadness… and hope and calm and ultimately, love.”
SALAD DAYS
I was born in London, England in 1958, the youngest of four and much to my parent’s surprise, I was born a dog. This unfortunate turn of events was soon accepted within my family and was never again mentioned in the presence of polite company.
I was a rambunctious youth as was natural to my breed but showed a fine interest in the arts as I drew pictures incessantly on anything including the walls and floors of every room of our tiny house. After some trouble with intolerant neighbors, my family was convinced to move to Canada and it was not long before the burgeoning town of Toronto became our new home. Unfortunately the drawing continued to become somewhat atypical and aberrant and it was impressed upon me that such images might not be suitable for public viewing. In the summer of 69, there was a valiant attempt to stop me from doodling infamous contemptible fascist dictators upside down on my stomach with a ballpoint pen. I was consoled however by the encouragement to continue penciling in faces of flamboyant cowboys such as Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger and Tonto on my toenails but was expressly forbidden to talk to them at night. It can be said that there are defining moments in a dogs life that can only be described as pivotal. Mine came when I received a gift of a flesh toned 12 inch plastic movable human doll attired in cheaply made military fatigues called “GI Joseph”. I however named him “Stanley Mulver” and immediately resigned his commission from the light infantry. My Mother helped in this by sewing small business suits and leisure wear out of leftover Christmas fabric embroidered with holly and snowmen, tinfoil shoes and one tasteful Safari suit made of tight fitting powder blue rayon that proudly shone cobalt in the summer sunlight. It wasn’t long before I had begun making enlarged wigs out of gray plasticine. These wigs soon became huge pompadours for Stanley and looked even more grand when I meticulously imbedded small hairs from my daily body and face shavings. This hirsute practice along with walking upright allowed me to fit in with other children even though my father considered it a waste of time. In short, Stanley had become a visage of the Man I could never be, of that elusive self one sometimes glimpses down the tunnel of infinite reflected mirrors. Although ridiculed by my peers, I proudly wore Stanley around my neck at all times as if to say “SEE! This is the man I will be, a good man, a kind man”. I have worked in many fields over the years, attended obedience classes and art colleges, jobs designing horrible buildings in architectural studios, medical art facilities, digital service bureaus, suspicious casino computer game companies, eventually working at computer modeling, digital animation and visual effects for television and film. Some award nominations have been attained and I have been driven in long black liquor filled limousines and walked on hind legs down red carpets in Pasadena while wearing strange smelling rented tuxedos. Things change and summer years come to an end. My change occurred one night when my Mother visited me, which was slightly unusual because she had passed away some months before, a victim to the cigarette habit she could never quite lick. Facing a wall and slowly turning I saw the right side of her face ablaze in light, her hand trying to cover the light as if she were apologetic for having it seep through. Words were said about following rabbits down holes and I was shown galleries of work which were to be my own. My Mother was not the first visitation I have had and it seems she will not be the last. I live in a brick house with my wonderful wife Jane and a coyote called Bonnie. I like eating avocados and I don’t really mind being a dog.
THE HOSPITAL FOR SICK CHILDREN For 17 years I worked in the Art and Photography Department of The Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto from 1980 until 1997. I worked in a department that documented such things as child abuse, surgical reconstruction, psychology and animal research. They were years that I will never forget, years of witnessing great sadness but also great miracles. I often awake in the middle of the night and realize I have been wondering the hallways and corridors of that giant hospital. As I lay there in the dark, I struggle to remember the fading words of those that still haunt my memories of so many years ago. It is so clear to me that this is the birthplace of all my imagery. It is appropriate that I now live my dreams for those that didn’t get a chance to live theirs…. to do otherwise would be a sin.
Much of my work at the hospital was tedious and boring in that I produced tremendous amounts of statistical data before the advent of computers and dealt with a lot of sensitive photographic material and work for publication. Another part of my job was overwhelming in that at any given moment I could typically find myself hovering over a tiny premature infant covered with tons of equipment. I would have to sift through the equipment to make a technical diagram, a teaching tool to allow intensive care nurses to have some idea of all that tangle of machinery that kept that tiny infant alive. Other times I would have to draw a similar thing of some poor animal in the research dept that had the misfortune of being a lab animal. To this day I have developed a profound love for animals that is very important to me. On a few occasions I dealt with forensic material for the court or sensitive medical documentation that would for me be overwhelming. I worked on board games and flash cards for brain damaged children and some of the early computer animations of the cryogenic removal of a brain tumors. Teaching hospitals are like tiny cities and whenever you think you have seen it all, reality slaps you in the face and shows you something that makes you re-evaluate everything. I learned in my life that human hands can be cruel and unkind but more often they can perform heart surgery or write a check to build a new wing of a hospital or just simply brush away a child’s tear.” Miracles do exist but they are often the product of our own actions and the incredible work of of the unsung heroes that care for children.
MY PROCESS
I create models in a three dimensional modeling software called Maya and cover these models with painted and manipulated photographic textures that wrap around them like a map on a globe. Each model is then set up with a invisible skeleton that allows me to pose and position the figure in its three dimensional environment. Digital lights and cameras are added with shadows and reflections simulating that of a real world.First the models are sculpted similar to pushing and pulling the surface of a piece of clay. I am often reminded of being in preschool with my huge chunk of Plasticine. I once modeled a Plasticine shoe but my father forbade me to wear it in public. I then create an inner structure of joints similar to a skeleton that allows me to pose the figure with a spine, shoulders, elbows and even finger joints. Many heads are modeled with many a different expression and these can be blended to create a subtle look similar to the one my wife has when I have done something suspicious.I color the models first in a very simple way, then each surface in the model is wrapped with a texture that may be painted digitally such as a flower petal or from a digital photograph such as a wood surface. I collect textures the way some people collect little silver spoons and I have a story about each texture in my collection such as the one about my father’s hip operation scar or the picture I convinced my gastroenterologist to give me of the inside of my colon. My favorite textures to collect are skin textures, as I have a legitimate excuse to ask people to expose large areas of bare skin.As my work is printed I am often asked about my original, but it exists only in the computer in a dimensional world of depth, width and height. I am fascinated by the concept that this 3 dimensional space exists much as another reality and even though I turn the computer off, I am haunted by the fact that this space is still there existing in a mathematical probability, and the space that we live in now might not be all that different.

What Is The Difference Between Podiatrist And Chiropodist?
Have you ever experienced foot pain and did a quick search like "Chiropodist near me"? You must have encountered another original term "Podiatrist" when skimming through the search results. Before we dig deep into what a chiropodist can do for a foot problem, let us clear this uncertainty about these two terms.
Is there a difference between a Podiatrist or Chiropodist?
Podiatrist and Chiropodist are interchangeable terms, and there is no technical difference between them.
Chiropodist and Chiropody are outmoded terms and were replaced by Podiatrist and Podiatry in the early 20th Century. The name is now extensively used in America, UK, Australia and other parts of the world. In recent times there is no difference between the qualification of a podiatrist and Chiropodist. Both are equally qualified and specialists in treating foot problems of diverse natures. Next time you're doing a search for Chiropodist near me and the terms Podiatrist appear, do not get doubtful as go ahead with the one you consider the best.
A chiropodist can be found everywhere in the United Kingdom. If you're looking for a Chiropodist Little Chalfont, Amersham, Chesham or Beaconsfield, Bucks foot clinic is a reputable clinic, offering its services in these areas.
What is Podiatry/ Chiropody?
Podiatry or Chiropody is a category of medicine that is focused on diagnosing and treating the ailments of the foot, ankles and the lower limbs. These professionals are educated and trained to provide medical as well as surgical treatments to people suffering from various types of foot problems including bunions, corns, fungus, ingrown toenails, athletes foot and many other ailments.
A Brief History of Chiropody:
Chiropody is an ancient science and has its roots in ancient Egypt. Modern-day Chiropody known as Podiatry developed when a society of Chiropodists was founded in New York in 1985. The society is still operating under a new name as the terms were updated in 1993. Now it is known as NYSPMA-New York State Podiatric Medical Association. A school was inaugurated in the year 1911. A society was founded in the London Foot hospital in 1912. A few years later in 1919, a school opened for people interested in making a career as Chiropodists.
Why was the term Chiropody changed to Podiatry?
If you are wondering why the term was changed suddenly? Although when both of them mean the same, there were two fundamental reasons.
In the mid 19th Century another branch of medicine, Chiropractic was making its space in the medicine world and often the term Chiropody was confused with Chiropractic. To get rid of this confusion, Chiropodist societies in the USA and UK decided to change the name to Podiatry.
A podiatrist is a blend of two Greek words Pod & Iatros, which means foot and healing, respectively. On the other hand, Chiropody is made of two words, Chiro meaning hand and Pod meaning foot. When compared, Podiatry more accurately describes the profession, and it was also a primary reason to update the term.
What are some common conditions a Podiatrist can treat?
A trained podiatrist or Chiropodist can diagnose and propose a treatment plan for various kinds of problem-related to the foot, ankle and lower limb. Some common conditions they treat include.
Verrucas/ Warts
Ingrown Nails.
Bunions.
Gouts
Trapped Toe Nerve
Heel Pain
Corns/Calluses
Painful Shins
Athlete's foot
Diabetic foot
What can a Podiatrist do for you?
Physical examination and recording medical history
Order and interpret diagnostic procedures like Ultrasounds, MRI,
Diagnose injuries, sports injuries and disorders and prescribe medicines to treat them.
Perform Physical Therapy
Perform microsurgeries and reconstructive surgeries
Set fractures
If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort in your feet, ankles or the lower limb, you should make an appointment with a Chiropodist/Podiatrist to appropriately diagnose and treat the condition.

How to safely and effectively get rid of nail fungus with professional nail fungal laser treatment
Red spots, yellow toenails, and a rash on your feet are most probably not Covid-19, but rather a common medical condition better known as foot or nail fungus. Did you know that nail fungus affects around 10% of adults and that you can pick it up in different ways - from fitting shoes to stepping on yoga mats, and walking barefoot in the garden?
Left untreated, it could result in keratinising, and in worst cases, you may even experience the loss of an entire nail along with pain, foul odor, discharge, and inflammation of the surrounding tissues. The root cause of this infection oftenoriginates from the disease Onychomycosis, and it is important to get an effective treatment such as nail fungal laser treatment,as soon as the first signs of infection appear.
The most common symptoms of nail fungal infections are thickening and discoloration, followed by crumbling or chipping of the nail. It is caused by dermatophytes, which is a type of fungus that can enter and infect the nail, not only on the surface but also in the nail bed. It is also contagious and can spread from one person to another.
The ideal climate for fungi to grow in is enclosed, warm and moist areas created by wearing socks and shoes for long periods, and therefore toenails are more prone to fungal infections. Athlete’s foot is another related fungal infection that results from conditions alike.
Although nail fungus infections are typically mild and painless, they can make you feel self-conscious about the appearance of your nails and cause a great deal of discomfort. There are, however, a wide range of treatment options available, ranging from medical creams, oral antifungal drugs to complete nail removal, but nail fungal laser treatment has proved to be most successful.
A session usually lasts only a few minutes. All affected nails are irradiated separately. The laser irradiation with the nail fungus is performed by an aesthetician.
Persistent and extensive nail fungus is often treated with tablets that contain antifungal agents, but in some patients, this systemic treatment is not possible due to other underlying medical conditions. The use of laser against nail fungus has been officially approved since 2010. Radiations with lasers, which break the nails and thus also destroy the nail fungus, have also been there before. Laser treatment of the nail fungus removes the fungi and does not attack the nail substance.
Medical facilities across the UK can help to effectively treat fungal nail infection with laser treatment by applying the Nd:YAG applicator. This device emits light with a wavelength of 1064nm, that penetrates deep into the infected tissues to heat and destroy them without damaging healthy cells. Applying this technology, different types of nail fungal infections can be successfully treated in both men and women.
Although there are many different ways to treat nail fungus, one should take care and not resort to self-medicate in severe cases as it may not completely treat the problem. If not treated correctly, nail infections could return or become worse and in extreme cases, it may result in hospitalisation and expensive surgery.
During a nail fungal laser treatment there may be a feeling of warmth, tingling, or a slight sting. These feelings are often described as unpleasant, but it disappears when the laser treatment of the nail is completed.
If you want your toenail fungus or infection to be treated effectively and never return, you can opt for nail fungal laser treatment with theNd:YAG applicator. Most people who have been treated with this device by professional practitioners were pleased with the results and said they would recommend it to anyone that may suffer from similar infections.

Case 1: Day 1, Part 1
The music played in the background as the woman made breakfast. Pancakes were flipped as bacon cooked in another pan. The woman swayed to the music as the finished pancakes were taken from the pan as new ones replaced them in the pan. The bacon was removed from the pan where it joined other slices and the grease was drained. The song changed and the woman began to sing. Her voice matched the artist’s, and it was even sweeter, if not richer than the artist’s. She continued to sing as she set the table with three plates. When she set the pancakes and bacon on the table, the woman held the note of the song for eight counts, and finished the song. As she was making coffee, clapping could be heard in the background. The woman turned to see her two friends that spent the night. “I still believe that you picked the wrong career,” said one. The other nodded in agreement as she ate a piece of bacon. The woman laughed as she pilled a pot of hot water off the stove, pouring it over a tea bag for the one who was munching on the bacon. The friend who spoke first pulled her messy tight curls into a loose ponytail atop her head as she walked over to the cabinets. She reached in and pulled out her resident mug and helped herself to the coffee that just finished. She added cream and sugar, stirring it slowly and enjoying the strong and rich aroma of the dark liquid. “Where are the beans from?” she asked. “Costa Rica,” said the woman who sang, “Got them from Skank.” “For a neurosurgeon, he sure loves to travel to find the best coffee,” said the friend drinking tea. The other two agreed. The three sat down and ate the warm food. They all took their time and enjoyed each other’s company/ The three women hadn’t had a day off that matched up in a few months and they all wanted to take advantage of it. Their whole day was planned out, including a trip to the spa. “Rilletta?”asked the tea drinker, “Is there more hot water for tea?” “It’s on the stove,” Rilletta answered. The girl got up and began to walk away from the table. “Serena, can you bring the coffee pot as well?” she asked. Serena said she would. “What do you guys want to do after the spa?” asked Thyxia. Her curls managed to escape their confinement, and were now tied in a bun. “Can we get drinks?” Serena asked, placing the coffee pot in between her friend, “Maybe ask the boys to come?” “I’m down,” Rilletta replied, “But don’t try and set me up with anyone like last time; clear?” Her two friends laughed. “Alright deal,” Thyxia said. They sat and finished their food, with Thyxia and Serena cleaning up since Rilletta made the food. Once the dishes were in the dishwasher, the girls put on comfortable clothes and got into Rilletta’s car. Thyxia controlled the music and Serena spread out in the backseat. They all sang along with the music, helping the time pass. As the three arrived and began walking inside, Rilletta received a phone call. She shooed her friends inside saying she’d be in momentarily. “Cincotta,” she answered. “We got a hit,” said the person on the other line. “Taddeo, you know it’s my day off,” Rilletta said. She knew he was smiling. “I know,” Taddeo answered, “But I’d figure I should keep you in the loop.” “Thank you I appreciate it,” she replied, “What did y’all come up with?” “We were able to pull a print off the light switch in the bedroom. It belongs to a hired hitman that arrived under the alias ‘John Smith’.” “How original,” Rilletta commented, “Got a location?” “Nothing yet, but once we catch him and bring him in, we will call you and tell you what we come up with.” “I can always come in,” she said. “No chance,” Taddeo said, “This is your first day off in how long? Plus, your friends had to practically drag you out yesterday. If it’s urgent we will call you in.” Rilletta sighed. “Alright fine,” she replied, “But contact me if the situation changes.” “You got it.” The phone call ended. The massage lasted an hour and a half, and the girls agreed it could have gone longer. The hot stones and seaweed wrap felt nice, but when it came to the cucumbers on the eyes, they all ate their two slices. The sauna was the best part of the whole day. Sitting in a warm room and thoroughly relaxing made the girls wish they could stay like that for eternity. The last part of the spa day included a manicure and pedicure. Serena had pale blue nails and coral toes, complimenting her tanned skin and sun-kissed hair. Thyxia chose a lavender color to paint over her acrylic nails, and bright yellow toes. Rilletta went with her usual colors: black toenails and groomed nails, no color. She hadn’t had painted nails in a few years, let alone acrylic nails. Her job was too physical for them. By the time the women got out, it was well into the afternoon. Thyxia got an idea and made a phone call. “What are you up to?” Rilletta asked as Thyxia got into the car. Serena was smiling down at her phone as the passenger door closed. “Drive to my work,” she instructed, “You’ll see when we get there.” Rilletta followed Thyxia’s instructions. Once the car parked, the three women got out of the car and walked into the massive hotel. Their shoes clicked on the tiled floor and were greeted by the grand entrance. Once Thyxia was seen, one of the attendants rushed over to her and handed her three keys. They conversed for a few moments before she returned to her friends. “Here you go,” Thyxia sang. She passed the room keys to her friends. “Packages are in the room. Be in the bar in an hour,” she instructed, “Let’s go.” They all rode up to the top floor and split up from there. They were each in a suite, one at each corner of the building. When the women got into he rooms, a full spread of makeup could be seen on the vanity, along with a custom dress and pair of shoes on the bed. Rilletta laughed. “I’m going to murder those two,” she said, “After a few rounds of shots.” The hour passed and Rilletta made her way down the bar. She felt ridiculous being all dressed up, but then again, Thyxia ran a five star hotel. When she walked in, Rilletta saw her friends at the bar top. Her two best friends liked gorgeous as always, and so did their boyfriends. Diknar, Serena’s boyfriend, was a foot taller than her without shoes on. He played professional baseball and was primarily catcher when he wasn’t up to bat. Despite him being the best player across all platforms with a fast ball reaching over ninety-five miles per hour, catching was his favorite. He and Serena recently got engaged. Thyxia’s boyfriend was an Olympic diver with three gold medals. The two had met when he was staying at one of the branches in Beijing and she was with her mother on a business trip. The two stayed in touch over the years and after coming back from London with his second gold and the Olympic rings freshly tattooed, the two started dating. Bakalis was six foot with coconut skin. His hair was curlier than his lady’s, resulting in his hair being kept short. He had asked for Serena’s help making a ring for Thyxia, with Rilletta’s help. The other two with the group included Dr. Audex Drazig, commonly known as Skank by the girls, and his girlfriend NIkaze Paleridge, a renown cardiologist. The two hit it off when they found out they were the first in their families to go to college after moving to the US. Both made ground breaking research around the time they started dating and haven’t looked back since. By the time she had finished looking everyone over, she was noticed. The group ushered Rilletta over, where she was given a tequila shot. They made a toast and swallowed the liquid courage. The time passed for the group and they all sat and talked. Serena shared all of her new sketches for her upcoming show for fashion week. The sketches included a wide variety of clothing, shoes, and jewelry. She shared a few sketches for her bridal collection, but she was no where near completion. She also wouldn’t know show the sketches for her dress, saying she wanted to surprise everyone. The two doctors talked about their recent patients and challenges they’ve had to deal with. The two of them had conducted a transplant, a brain and a heart, both ending in success. Audex was also trying to see if there was a way to reverse Alzheimers, but so far hadn’t come up with anything. Nikaze was working on fixing irregular heartbeats found in embryos without the use of surgery once they are delivered. So far, she only had a small amount of information, and was working on gathering more. This was the first night the two had off in a few months, and everyone knew what their night entailed. After her third glass of water and the group finishing another plate of cauliflower bites, Rilletta received a phone call. She read the caller ID and immediately answered. Her boss told her that the man whose prints were found at the crime scene was only hired to clean the house that belonged to the dead man. That was his cover story anyways. When they used his real name and questioned him further, the man came clean about being a hit man, but that he was not ordered to kill the man they have. Rather, he came to warn the man. John Smith, as he liked to be called, explained his relationship with the dead man, and provided a list of other possible men who could have killed him. The names were being run through the system as the two conversed. “What do you need me to do?” Rilletta asked. “Keep an eye out for these people, I’m sending over photos now,” said her boss. “Got it.” Laughter could be heard in the background. “Where are you?” the boss asked. “I’m in the Palace, the bar in the Seabay Hotel,” she answered as she looked at the photos. “How did you get in?” he asked. RIlletta rolled her eyes. “You forget who my best friend is,” she answered. “That’s right,” he answered, “Sorry to take you away from your friends.” “No don’t be; everyone is being mushy with their partners,” she said, “Regardless, I’ll see what I come up with and let you know what I find.” The two hung up. Soon after, she received a call from her boss’ partner, Lt. Jaylon, saying she was being called to a new crime scene. She didn’t have time to change, only enough time to grab her gun and badge. “Gotta run,” she told her friends. She sighed in relief. “But it’s your day off!” Thyxia whined. “A cop never has a day off,” she replied, running out of the bar.

Podiatry: Past, Present, and Future
In modern times, many people have forgotten the importance of feet to one’s overall health and enjoyment of life – until pain and discomfort strike. But the precursors of the modern medical science of podiatry go back a long way, and the future has many advances in store. So says Dr Mark Lin, a Sydney podiatrist with a reputation for pioneering treatments that may soon become the gold standard in podiatric care.

Foot Doctors: a Rich History
Although the term “podiatry” was first used in 1917, the knowledge that our feet need special care goes all the way back to Ancient Egypt. Here, archeologists have found images of foot treatments on the walls of ancient tombs. Hippocrates, the Ancient Greek physician who is seen as the father of medicine as we know it today, also described the treatment of foot problems like corns and calluses. The methods used to treat these painful, hardened areas of skin are still much the same today.
Throughout history, kings, emperors, and ordinary people alike understood the need for foot doctoring. Admittedly, the former were more likely to have a personal physician specifically appointed for the task. Napoleon was among these notables. Moving forward in time, we find that Abraham Lincoln suffered from painful corns and ingrown toenails that were treated by a specialized physician.
World history could have been different without foot doctors. If Napoleon had not been able to stand up straight and proud at the head of his armies, history may have turned out differently. Imagine a world in which Abraham Lincoln had missed his date to address the crowd at Gettysburg because his feet hurt so much that he couldn’t stand. Indirectly, it’s just possible that we can thank the man who treated Lincoln’s feet for the abolition of slavery.
From Chiropody to Podiatry
As we have seen, doctors who specialized in foot-related problems have been around for centuries, and in 1895, their work was recognized in America with the establishment of the first professional chiropody society. Soon after, the British followed suit, even establishing a foot hospital in London.
Medical schools also recognized the need for training in this field, and in the 1960s, a qualification in podiatry was finally given the designation it still has today. Thus, a podiatrist will have a DPM, or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine qualification, and he or she will specialize in treating problems with the feet, ankles, and lower limbs.

Advances Continue: The Future of Podiatry
Modern podiatrists are qualified to examine, diagnose, and treat foot, ankle and lower limb injuries, and like other doctors, they can prescribe medicine. Many of the therapeutic techniques podiatrists use are a form of physiotherapy, and prescription orthotics are far more than just funny-looking insoles. Some foot doctors even specialize in podiatric surgery including microsurgery – a far cry from the first basic scalpel treatments of corns and calluses.
Up-and coming advances in podiatry include new surgical tools, the use of advanced beaming technology, new anti-fungal treatments for toenails, new bone grafting methods, and bio-integrative implants. Dr Lin is, himself, a pioneer in the use of a new technology. It’s called Trigenics, and he is the first Australian podiatrist to use it in treatment programs.
“In regular podiatry, we look at the muscles and joints of the feet and lower limbs, but Trigenics brings the neurological issues we need to overcome into the equation,” he explains. “All movements originate in the nervous system, and when people have become accustomed to compensating for injuries or physiological issues, the nervous system learns to send out the wrong kind of signals. Pain also scrambles neurological signals, and during treatment, the nervous system has to learn how to initiate healthy movement.”
“Trigenics is a non-invasive and effective tool we can use to help reprogram the nervous system so that it begins to send out the correct signals to the muscles. Since I began implementing it in my practice, my patients and I have been pleased with the rapid and long-lasting results we are able to achieve. Trigenics will be an important part of the future of podiatry. The results we are achieving speak for themselves.”

Have you ever felt uncomfortable with your toenail digging into the skin? It is because you have an ingrown toenail. It is a common condition where the nail side or corner of the toenail penetrates the soft flesh beneath. Ingrown toenails usually affect the big toe, resulting in pain, inflamed skin, swelling, and sometimes an infection.
