Meet Addie Larkin

Addie is a longtime friend of Tobias, who is introduced in Chapter 2. While they've known each other for nearly a decade and cherish their friendship, they know very little about each other's personal lives. For example, Addie had a partner this whole time, but Tobias only met them once in passing. While their friendship is not deep, it's still very important to them.

Hometown: She grew up in Boston. A bit of a nomad, she moves frequently but stays nearby. She has lived in Jamaica Plain, South Boston, and Alston neighborhoods of Boston, as well as Brookline and Somerville in recent years.

Age: 35 years old at start of story.

Sexual Orientation: She doesn't like labels, but if forced to identify, she'd say she's pansexual.

Relationship status: She has a long-term partner, but little is known about them.

Occupation: An artist at heart but a business owner by trade. She owns a store in Cambridge that specializes in Boho-style clothing and arts, as well as metaphysical products. She manages a successful business but is not as capable of managing her personal finances.

Other information: Addie is 100% Boston Irish but is estranged from most of her family. She left home for New York to attend art school at 18, and her conservative family did not approve of her lifestyle choices. When she refused to bend to their demands at the end of her sophomore year, they cut her off financially. She stayed in New York for six months but returned to Boston, where she had a network of friends soon after. She loves Boston and her life there. A non-conformist, she started her own business because traditional ventures, schedules, and lifestyles never worked for her. After years of trying to find her niche, she started a small business selling boho-style clothing she made. It eventually grew into a thriving lifestyle/metaphysical store in Cambridge.

Some backstory: She and Tobias met at a bar on his third night in Boston. They got along instantly, and she showed him around his new hometown and introduced him to people who were not involved in the medical world. He provided medical care for her during a period of time when she did not have adequate health coverage, and after that, a deeper bond was formed.

They consider each other close friends, but they know remarkably little about each other's personal lives. For example, Tobias knows she has a partner this whole time, but he's only met them once or twice in passing. Tobias has shared many stories about his conquests with her, but she couldn't tell you a name or face associated with them. Still, when she learns he has an official girlfriend, she's eager to meet her. And while not seeking approval, Tobias hopes they'll get along.

Many assume Tobias and Addie had something more than friendship at some point in the past. But the only two who know the answer to that are Tobias and Addie, and they prefer to leave people guessing.

Faith & Fate - A Leap Of Faith Fanfiction

As I told Emily (@philhoffman ) I have started writing a Leap Of Faith story, which I have now titled 'Faith & Fate', it takes place in 1993 and in the fictional town of 'Lead Springs, Texas'. And I shall now word dump on you some info:

Major Changes to the plot / Spoilers:

After the ending of 'Leap of Faith' Jonas was dropped off the next town over by the truck driver. The trucker thought Jonas was mad and threw him and his bag out.

Jonas had to call Jane, she and Sheriff Braverman came to get Jonas and they (Jonas and Jane) re-joined the crew, heading off to the next town, eventually reaching Lead Springs, Texas by January 9th of 1992, where 'Faith & Fate' begins.

So basically, I'm using 'Leap of Faith' as a 'movie becomes series' (like Buffy for example) to lead into 'Faith & Fate'

Aka the two least deserving of anyone's trust, the Boss (Jonas) and the ACTUAL boss (Jane). I don't trust either of them, but I trust Larson more because of the butterflies scene. Jane is dating Sheriff Braverman long-distance and Jonas still keeps in touch with Boyd and Marva, though he isn't particularly close to either of them.

Ages: Jonas - 47. Jane - 37

The Choir & The Crew (General)

More than likely underpaid (even though Jonas has a bag of golden watches), but good people. I know several of the crew who put together the gigantic tent have tattoos, so possibly a mix of types of Christians, including maybe some who aren't fully Christians

Ages: Unknown, Approx. 20s-40s mostly

Tiny

First of all, he's a giant, dude's like 6'3. My name for him is Timothy Smalls, so in my head at least Jonas nicknamed him Tiny because of the character of Tiny Tim and it just stuck. He helps with building the tent, collecting money, gathering info, etc.

Matt

Hoover

The driver of Jonas' bus, as in the main bus at the front of the pack of 4. His name's Tobias Hoover. His family is my OCs, specifically his 2 brothers and niece. I like his fashion choices, but I know they're not for everyone, also I have been unironically listening to mostly Meat Loaf songs while writing these characters.

(OC) Jedidiah 'Jed/Bubba' Hoover

Eldest brother, and the only Hoover brother to have kids, big (6'2") cuddly papa bear, but seriously don't come near his daughter, he protects her like she's a miracle and her mother / Jed's wife died when Cai was very young.

Age: 46

(OC) Micaiah 'Cai' Hoover

Jed's daughter, Cai's been raised by practically just men, her family has always been in Lead Springs, her uncle Tobias was the only one who left. She suffers with CIDP, which means she's often in a wheelchair but manages as well as she can to be independent. She doesn't work, not due to disability but rather due to lack of jobs, as well as the mistreatment she receives in Lead Springs.

Age: 22 (turns 23 within the first few chapters)

(OC) Zechariah 'Ari' Hoover

Tobi and Jed's younger brother, and Cai's uncle. Zechariah goes by Ari, which can be confusing. He lives with Jed and Cai, acting as a second father to Cai while working with Jed at the town's diner. Most days he regrets letting Tobias leave, but has to remind himself that his brother has his own life.

(OC) Reverend B.J Deacon

The young, new Episcopal church reverend/deacon, fresh faced and just out of seminary school. He's very new to actually leading a church and very inexperienced, hoping to learn from Jonas how to engage people with their faith.

💇 What is your OC’s hairstyle? How do they maintain their hair? Do they wash it and/or cut it regularly? Have they ever dyed their hair?

Lilian's hair is cut into a mohawk; usually he wears it natural but sometimes she'll have it put in different styles (braided ponytail or microbraids, but never locs). He washes his haid about as regularly as you're supposed to with black hair (2 or 3 times a week iirc) and she trims it often to maintain the length (medium-long, goes to his shoulder when braided)

✋ Are your OC’s hands smooth, rough, or average? Why? How do they keep their nails? Do they bite them, paint them, neatly trim them, et cetera?

Tobias is a lifelong gardener, of course he has rough hands! He keeps his nails as short as possible (getting dirt under nails isn't fun and he could accidentally cut his plants up with long nails). He'll paint them occasionally, usually something colorful.

👁 What is your OC’s eye color? Do they have any eye-related habits, like winking or rubbing their eyes? Do other people tend to notice their eyes?

Zahra's eyes are Hazel! She tends to rub her eyes a lot (and consequently doesn't wear eye make-up ever). Her eyes aren't particularly noticeable to most people but they are striking to anyone who does look at them.

We analyzed the Oscar-winning roles of every best actress and best actor recipient since 1929. The results paint a sobering pattern.

Supposedly the easiest acting path to winning an Academy Award is playing a hero, even flawed, or else a physically or mentally ill person.

Not if you’re a woman.

In fact, men are more than twice as likely to take home an Oscar for portraying those qualities.

That’s one conclusion I’ve drawn from examining the 180 roles (including two ties) that earned best actor and actress Academy Awards since 1929. Not a scientific study to be certain, but a subjective assessment by an experienced critic. Even with a generous margin of error, the numbers are striking.

In my estimation, 80 of 90 best actor Oscar winners won for roles considered heroic, antiheroic with an addiction to beat or a change of heart to make, or a disability or mental illness to cope with. George C. Scott in Patton and Ben Kingsley in Gandhi play heroes. Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart and Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas play antiheroes with the same flaw of alcoholism. Rod Steiger’s flaw is bigotry in In the Heat of the Night. Blindness in Ray and Scent of a Woman can be as dramatically effective as cerebral palsy in My Left Foot.

Meanwhile, I only counted 35 of 90 best actress winners whose roles fit those descriptions. Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, Sissy Spacek in Coal Miner’s Daughter and Anne Bancroft in The Miracle Worker are true-life heroes; winners from biopics are fairly even between the genders. Same goes for physical or mental illnesses. At that point, defining heroism in women’s roles begins to differ.

Fictional women characters often take different, darker routes to Oscars; the hero as victim or sexual object. The academy’s rewarding of these roles since its inception may have encouraged such portrayals.

Consider that 11 best actress Oscar winners portrayed prostitutes or characters defined by sexual behavior often including nudity. (Another 8 winners of the best supporting actress Oscar fit that description.) Meanwhile, except for Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), best actor winners have barely shown skin.

Another 11 best actress Oscar winners portrayed victims of sexual, physical or emotional abuse from men. Six characters were raped, from Jane Wyman’s Johnny Belinda (1949) to Brie Larson in Room (2016). Two had husbands trying to kill them. All but three winning roles survive with lifelong scars.

No fewer than 13 best actor Oscar winning roles portrayed women’s abusers (Raging Bull) and their murderers (Reversal of Fortune, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde). On the other hand, only two best actor portrayals can be described as men victimized by women, led by one to a grim end: Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Emil Jannings (The Way of All Flesh) at the very first Academy Awards in 1929.

At least 13 best actress Oscar portrayals were of women suffering men, from the philanderers of Come Back, Little Sheba and Room at the Top to mean drunks in Hud and The Country Girl. If they’re lucky, the relationship is irritating but non-violent and leads to romance; that’s As Good as It Gets.

Just as many best actress roles can be considered sweetheart performances, more charm than dramatic challenge, like Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday and Emma Stone in last year’s La La Land. Bing Crosby in Going My Way and Richard Dreyfuss in The Goodbye Girl may be the closest to sweetheart turns on the actors’ list.

On the encouraging side, there are five best actor winners who played men thinking they’re in control until a woman proves differently: Clark Gable, It Happened One Night; Humphrey Bogart, The African Queen; Yul Brynner, The King and I; Rex Harrison, My Fair Lady; and Anthony Hopkins, The Silence of the Lambs.

Notice that the most recent film among those five is now 27 years old. That’s the kind of equal opportunity thinking Hollywood from top to bottom needs again.
