Day 6  - Visiting assigned Clinic / Drafts
For the two days, we were visiting the ADA (Alzheimer’s disease Association) New Horizon Centre at Toa Payoh as our assigned visiting clinic.
The ADA is an association formed to give Alzheimer or dementia patients and their caregivers a helping hand whilst advocating more awareness about the Alzheimer’s disease and to reduce the negative stigma that surrounds and enabling those affected with dementia, or those with a connection to it, positively mingle back into the community and society.
The objective of our visit would be to observe and interact with the patients.
The first day of the visit, me and one of my group members, agreed to get a taxi to our destination as using other means of public transport to get there would be confusing and it was an early start. The place was located amongst apartment blocks but facing a main road. We waited in front of the clinic until others had arrived along with our assigned-group mentor. once all there, we were led inside and into a little consultation office, where for about 30 minutes or so, we were given the rundown on the clinic itself, the patients and how they were all grouped in each part of the clinic, how we could go about observation and getting involved and interacting with the patients and their daily activities and the volunteers, whom had close bonds with the patients themselves. They not just accepted patients diagnosed with a complete for of dementia but patients with partial dementia, such as having suffered a stroke, with one of their patients who would be seen walking up and down each end of the clinic. The said patient was likely to be in her 40’s, from my observation, and looked like a public servant if she hadn’t had a stroke and instead sported a work suit. Seeing her like that struck some sadness within.
When it came to actually observing, one or two of us would be assigned to a group. The groups seemed more like classes and seemed like there were only two, both separated by a community kitchen and a entertainment space that consisted of a medium sized modern boxed tv (not like the flat screens of today but something like that of a 1990’s model). And each class had patients with different levels of severity in their dementia.
Fact: Dementia and Alzheimer’s are not the same yet they are associated with memory loss. Alzheimer’s is a disease with no known cure let alone a cause whilst Dementia is a syndrome, with known causes and can be treated to some extent, even possibly reversal.
Alzheimer’s is listed as a type of dementia.
The class I was assigned consisted of mild to moderate stages of patients with dementia whilst the other class was of patients with more moderate to severe stages of dementia. For a while, I watched how volunteers would read aloud the day and date in 3 or 4 different languages which included English, Chinese (both in Cantonese and Mandarin) and in Singlish, and then encourage the patients to repeat after them. After that was followed by a light workout of stretches physical movements such as marching on the spot or touching the knees in a standing position. Patients in wheelchairs were exempt but were still encouraged to touch the knees or something along those lines.
Morning tea was then served to the patients followed then by some afternoon activities. From morning tea, we had interacted with the patients, introducing ourselves and engaging in friendly conversations. Not all patients were fluent in English and most didn’t speak it so that was a challenge. At least I could speak and understand a bit of Cantonese so it made things a tad smoother. The patients were so sweet and upon conversing with them, they would tell nice stories of their younger days or how we had reminded them of their close ones. As for the activities, they would play stimulating and memory games such as “UNO” or “Guess who”. They even had a foosball table but it seemed to be sitting in a corner of the clinic.
When it was lunch time for the patients, we gathered back together in the consultation room where would relay our experience and observations. For me, two things stood out to me; the colours of the walls and 1980’s vibe throughout the utilized spaces and how we were communicating with the patients.
The walls were coloured in a light mint-green or pale yellow with wood-framed paintings hung and there were the floral motifs in the interior design on the ceilings, which it personally made me feel uneasy in the rooms. However, the walls and interior design were purposely applied to give the patients a familiar sense of home and it made better sense because of the era they had lived in in their younger days. That was one interesting revelation.
Then with the communication aspect, despite conversing in a friendly manner, it felt too friendly just from observing how the clinic volunteers spoke with the patients. It was as if they were talking to a kindergarten child. That was understandable though due to the fact that the patients were not as mentally busy anymore and responding had slowed. When I spoke to the patients and in a similar spoken way, the staff had spoken, it felt conflicting to me because I felt like I was talking to somebody ignorant when these were elderly people, whom society would respect for not their age but their wisdom. Just from the few hours spent, it was a very eye-opening experience with sadness.
We finished up after sharing our observations and experiences and headed for lunch at the food court in the Toa Payoh HDB, where we also spent the afternoon, at ‘The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf’ café, discussing the visit and what ideas had been acquired. I had started looking at some branding and logo examples for the ideas of a product.

(The photo’s may seem irrelevant but this was an enthusiastic moment for me, finding this wild dendrobium type orchid growing up high on a tree just outside the ADA clinic.)
The evening I stayed in to work on other assessments and rest as I was feeling exhausted.

The Weekend That Was #8
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sept 20-22
On a hazy Friday night, I hung out with K's former colleagues in Lau Pa Sat. Had some really good thai food. But I had my period that day so I was a bit preoccupied with the intense pain in my abdomen.
By Saturday I was feeling sluggish. I forced myself out of bed at around 1pm to go to the pre-bootcamp code clinic, but chickened out when I was on my way. I went as far as toa payoh and realised the bus I was supposed to get into was disrupted by F1.
I went back and did the react thing in my bed. Around 6pm we left for The Projector. We took a gojek. We had fried rice from this small family-owned restaurant in Golden Mile prior to the movie. It was a full house for Midsommar! The first time I've seen that happen.
The movie was alright. I think it's not as good as Hereditary and that it was undeserving of the hype.
Then after Midsommar we stayed for a couple of drinks and the best chilidog I've ever had in my life.
We took the bus to Telok Ayer afterwards. The place was dead so we walked to Tanjong Pagar and went to Nineteen80. We danced a little then spent most of the time in the arcade. My wrists actually hurt from playing. Can u believe. We went home at around 3AM.
On Sunday we weren't feeling 100%. I just did my homework in bed then we went to ikoma for nihongo class. Learned how to give orders in a not-so-polite way.
After class we went to lucky plaza to check out a tailor but it was too expensive so we walked outta there and to Paragon. Then we made a spontaneous decision to eat a Sushi Tei.

AMAZING FOOD. I loved the beef most of all. Secondly the potato croquette, and thirdly the azuki dessert. After dinner we went home and I just continued with my skillshare parallax tutorial.
This weekend went by way too fast and I feel bad I never pushed myself to go to the gym or cook some meals.

A dramatic crisis ended in a murder-suicide on October 22, 2016, according to Channel News Asia. The causes of the two deaths have been recently confirmed by the coroner’s report. The sad situation draws attention to the need for early detection and prompt treatment for mental health issues.
A History of Abuse
Forty-six-year-old Wang Chan Foo, also called Ongko Widjojo, was a husband and father to two children, ages 13 and 7. There had been complaints of domestic abuse in the home previously, including a report from the wife. In 2011, she went to a Family Service Centre to report physical and verbal abuse that had been ongoing since 2006. She also told the care worker that her husband threw all the children’s books from the window of the flat. According to the daughter, Mr. Wang used to throw things at his wife when the couple argued. He would punish the children physically in fits of anger. After more instances of physical abuse, which left bruises, Mr. Wang’s wife initiated a separation from her husband in 2012. She took the children with her.
A Fateful Reunion
At the time of her death, the woman was living with her two kids in Toa Payoh. They met with Mr. Wang at their Novena Suites unit each weekend because of the children’s tuition classes. On the evening of October 22, 2016, Mr. Wang told the children to wait for him in the lift lobby while he spoke with their mother. After waiting for three hours, the daughter finally contacted police in tears. The police entered the family unit and discovered that the 44-year-old mother had died from several stab wounds.
On the roof of the building, Mr. Wang stood at the edge. In spite of the efforts of a crisis negotiation team and a group of police officers, the man leaned forward and fell to his death at 7:12 p.m.
The Cause of the Crisis
In the family unit, investigators also found notes written by Mr. Wang to his children, apparently before he killed her. The notes directed the children to “listen to your mother” in the event that “Papa is no longer around,” indicating that although he planned to kill himself, he did not originally plan to kill his wife.
According to further investigation by police, Mr. Wang was dealing with terrible insomnia and deep depression. A month before the murder-suicide, he overdosed on red wine and sleeping pills and was sent to a hospital. A note that he wrote to his sister at that time reveals his despair and his wish for death.
