Freedom from pain, suffering, disease and illnesses - one of the five freedoms of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 UK
Under the Animal Welfare Act all Animals have the rights to:
Freedom from hunger, thirst or malnutrition
Freedom from discomfort
To be able to exhibit normal behaviours
Freedom from fear and distress
To be protected from pain, suffering, disease and illnesses.
As it is such a big topic I'll explore each freedom within each blog.
Freedom from pain, suffering, disease and illnesses. This is another big one for me. One of the most misunderstood needs when addressing a change in behaviour is working through a process of elimination, beginning with a Vet check to rule out pain and illness as this can and does cause changes in behaviour.
Many guardians think that a booster appointment is the same as a Vet check. It isn't. Within a Vet check we are potentially looking at a full cbc (complete blood count) tweaked as needed for the individual dog so the blood test may actually be looking for more. A urinalysis to rule out any problems with the kidneys and liver or is there any information from the urine during analysis.
Your annual check up may look different if you have a senior dog, where further tests are done such as a cbc and urinalysis for example.
However in the years before the senior years, if you book an independent full vet check or wellness exam, you may already be aware that as well as checking over the body, they will listen to the heart and the lungs, take their temperature, check their pulse rate and respiratory rate. Feel the abdomen and limbs, check their teeth, eyes and ears. They may also take your dog's weight or do a body score. They may also do a rectal exam and check that there are no problems with the anal glands, they may also check their reflexes and watch their movements around the consultation room for a gait analysis. They may also do faecal exams, heartworm tests and possibly give parasite prevention if you purchase this from the vets.
The vet may also ask you about their routine and diet, so the vet can establish what is normal for your individual dog.
If your dog appears unwell or there is a change in behaviour you may find that they need to then explore a cbc and look at other diagnostic tests which can include the above or more depending on your individual dog.
When we advise guardians to have a Vet check when there is a behaviour change, many guardians say that they have just had their boosters so they don't understand why we are recommending a Vet check. This is on all of us as professionals to guide guardians through the above expected process for their dogs health and well being.
Working holistically we can also pull in the services and help across a multidisciplinary team of a nutritionist, hydrotherapist, canine chiropractor, physio, groomer and homoeopaths.
It is clear that it isn't the fault of anyone if a dog is taken ill or injured and that just like for humans being unwell or injured is a part of life.
However the five freedoms brought attention to the avoidance of negative welfare states which can reduce the likelihood of illness, disease and injury. By improving welfare standards, for example Vaccinations, titre tests, health screening and scores, keeping dogs indoors (as opposed to residing outdoors),with a highly nutritious diet, access to fresh water and in a safe environment was the first step in reducing the risk.
It was also identified within the five freedoms that affects and affective states also contribute to the unwellness or imbalances to the internal physical and functional wellness of animals. If you refer back to this blog: Freedom from distress you can read more about affects and affective states. https://www.facebook.com/100057373879884/posts/pfbid0sSymRUa7GdcdHYvMmebQkAM5rBUQKcgL1bGBmPFcJL78qnJpKnvPuY9j8LfeoE6Ul/
There is also another negative affect, which can affect dogs' health and wellness, which are the negative emotions that dogs can experience such as fear, anxiety, panic, frustration, anger, helplessness, depression, boredom and loneliness. The negative emotional states can cause unwellness in dogs just like it does with us. This has been evidenced by the sciences of neuroscience, behavioural and physiological. (2) Remembering that dogs also have mental health needs like us and can become physically unwell due to poor mental health.
So when a behaviourist begins by building a history form and a consult with lots of questions which can sometimes feel time consuming or irrelevant, it is because of the model of the five domains. To understand your dog as an individual in order to understand the why of the behaviour. Much like calling 111 and the speaker says “some of these questions may seem irrelevant.”(3)
It is also really important that we note within this freedom that there is a difference between surviving and thriving. For example the absolute minimum of keeping a dog alive and allowing them to thrive. For example puppy mills, where the dogs are given the absolute minimum to simply stay alive, we know that these dogs and their puppies are absolutely not in a state of thriving.
It is also important to note that dogs can be chronically over or underfed, exposed to bad and or extremes of weather, suffer with chronic injuries or infections and still be alive. (4)
It's important to understand that the phrase “when you know better you do better” is kept in mind here, my intention is not to offend or upset anyone, nor for anyone to feel bad. I raise this awareness and share this knowledge so that you have access to it.
I feel as a professional I have a duty of care to enable guardians and colleagues as much as possible, to have as much knowledge as possible. This will only enable better dog welfare when you have this information in a summarised and easy to understand format for everyone.
Many guardians and in fact professionals do not have this knowledge, nor do they know what to ask a Vet for, within a full health check and there is no shame in that. It is not easy to find this information and have it in terms that are not clinical.
Hopefully by sharing this knowledge you now feel you have a much wider understanding and can educate friends, family and colleagues about their own animals they share their home with.
If you are ever concerned about the welfare of someone's animal within the UK please contact the RSPCA https://www.rspca.org.uk/utilities/contactus/reportcruelty this will take you to a landing page to signpost you to the relavent service. The RSPCA is often overwhelmed with calls nationwide so utilising the website and even their chat button can help them to learn of your concern and take measures to further contact you. You can report concerns anonymously.
In the next and final blog concerning the Five freedoms I will be wrapping up with a summary and how we can help dogs now, with small changes!

Assume Parvo everywhere
Anonymous said to @ask-drferox: If you know or suspect a dog with parvo has been in a public place (like, a dog park, or even a person park or walking trail or loose in your neighborhood or stuff) what should you do?
Assume parvo has been everywhere because the nasty little virus can survive in soil for up to 20 years, and given that canine parvo only showed up around the 1980′s it may well last longer than that.
Higher risk areas are places where dogs can free-run, pooping and vomiting wherever they like, deeper soils, and the beach where everything washes up eventually.
Vaccinate your dogs. Once they have finished their puppy course and are over 6 months old, the chance of picking up a parvo infection is extremely low.
Boost their parvo immunity every 3rd year in a high parvo area, or consider titre testing from the third year onwards if you’re not keen on vaccinating that much.
For unvaccinated and incompletely vaccinated puppies, keep them off the ground outside when socializing them. Socialization is still super important, more dogs are euthanised for behavior problems than parvo virus nationally across Australia.
Don’t send a puppy under 16 weeks (full vaccination course) to a home which previously had a parvo dog in it.
Remember that cats and foxes can also transmit canine parvovirus, so it is safer to just assume it’s been everywhere. Fortunately, the vaccine is highly effective.
Don’t let your dog investigate obvious piles of bloody diarrhea or vomit. Certainly do not allow it to consume such things.

I'm sorry to bother you with this, but can I get feel-good stories from your followers who've lost their cats in completely different neighbourhoods or parts of the city than from where said cats live in? Pretty please? I'm in the middle of a big move from one country to another, and I had to temporarily leave my two cats with a kind caretaker to fix things in the new country while waiting for them to come along after three months have passed from their titre tests, and, well. Yeah, one ran away
from said caretaker, and it worries me because there are careless drivers here as well as feral dogs. And it helps even less that the cat that ran away looks like any other tabby cat, with no special markings or traits to set her apart from other cats. I don't know, I'm sorry for bothering you with this, but it's 5:15 AM and I'm unable to fall asleep and yeah...

Winnie's Blog
Winnie’s Introduction to Raw feeding a species appropriate diet – 17th Jan 2020
(This is a test blog and my first attempt whilst attending a social media course, being required to do a few practical experience during class time)
Winne’s breeder had weaned her on a raw diet of tripe and steak. Winnie was 10 weeks old when I brought her home on the 10th August 2016. I knew absolutely nothing of raw feeding.
Being a first time dog owner, I did not know anything of holistic or biologically appropriate feeding and I regrettably followed vet advice and Cockapoo group forums much to the detriment of the pup. I do wish that I had researched and known a little more before I got the pup and spared her some of the exposure to chemicals. I wish I had titre tested and understood immunity before blindly taking her for vaccinations that I not only did not understand buy had not been clearly explained to me by the vets, the conventional vet and conventional community actively encouraged and hassled me to use chemical flea and worm preventatives such as Bravecto and Millebax, I was also encouraged to stick to Kibble, dry feeding and received a plethora of useless advice by breed owners in group forums to try several kibbles, so we duly tried James WellBeloved, Guru, Platimum, Harringtons, Tails, Millies Wolfheart, Akela, Lilys Kitchen, Orijen, Eden, Barking Heads ….. and probably a few more brands, all before the pup reached 11 months of age. Winnie was a regular visitor to a conventional vet who also pushed the kibble brands that they pushed. What I did not know or understand is that dry food is dead inorganic food with artificial, synthetic and carcinogenic ingredient void of any nutrients and enzymes.
I had also suspected that any derivative was posing to be a problem to Winnie and I learnt that nearly all of these kibble foods had some sort of chicken composition or derivatives in them ; often disguised and hidden within oils and fats. Much of the kibble market have this in their foods because chicken is cheap and easy to source for many. Chicken is a known pro-inflammatory food, and high in Omega 6 so must be balanced with Omega 3 to balance correctly.
Winnie did not enjoy kibble, she often refused mealtimes, she had copraghia (eating stools) she was a bag of bones and far too skinny, and to boot had anal gland issues that needed frequent draining because the diet was not right for her. With anal gland issues this had started itchy skin. Wrong food can lead to a disruptive gut and microbiome.
It was at 11 months of age that I had a eureka moment and the lightbulb went off in my head. Simply put “I NEEDED TO DO BETTER FOR HER”
So with my curiosity and interest piqued, and a nagging ache in my gut that something was not right and I needed to try something different to allow winnie to improve and help her to “thrive” not just to survive.
I joined the “Raw & Holistic cat and dog support group” run by Patricia Gethin and her experienced and professional admin and large following of experienced members. Patricia personally hand held me to educate and encourage me to help me understand that Winnie would perhaps do better on a “fresh food species appropriate diet” …. And from there I bought some Paleo Ridge raw for Winnie to transition on.
We followed a guide of :-
#paleoridge
Week 1 – just tripe, we chose lamb tripe although Beef tripe is also available
Week 2 – Lamb tripe and introduced duck
Week 3 – she was ready for a “complete”
Regardless of whether you are preparing your own raw or are using a prepared raw food, it is best to start with just one protein source, like chicken or turkey. (We chose duck because I suspected chicken to be a problem to Winnie)
Feed one protein for one week at a time, if there are no signs of digestive upset you can try a new protein and so on.
I was told not to go straight in on completes whilst they transition. The advice I received was not to rush offal and bone for the first few weeks so not to completes until approximately week 3.

Unalome
I have ten days until I start nursing school which seems complete impossible to me. It has taken me so long to get to this point in my life that I’m a little in shock that it’s finally here.
Here’s what happened so far in the last week:
Friday
I took my dog to get the staples removed from his face and had brunch downtown with my boyfriend. I spent a long time at the health department on Friday getting a Hep B titre and a Chicken Pox vaccine because apparently I never had my second Chicken Pox booster when I was a kid. That thing was so annoying. It left a huge welt on my arm that was very hard, sore, and itched. Plus, I was told that I have to avoid pregnant people for one month which is really inconvenient given that my best friend is currently pregnant. I was really hoping to be able to spend time with her before school started but that is now out the window. After I left the Health Department I went to another clinic to get a TB test. I also was doing some pet sitting Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday
More pet sitting and cleaning up the house
Sunday
More pet sitting and brunch with my mother, to which we took our dogs.
Monday
I spent the entire day with my boyfriend which was so nice because I can’t remember the last time we got to spend this much time today and also have no idea when the next time will be.
Tuesday
I lost my job. I worked for a friend of mine and we had a disagreement and decided that the arrangement wasn’t working anymore. Honestly, I was relieved. It has given me time to get things handled before I start school. I am choosing to see this as the opportunity for me to start nursing school on the best foot forward that it is. I went to therapy, the grocery store, and spent more time with my boyfriend before going home to prep dinner. I love to cook but I am almost certain that I’m going to have a lot less time to do that once school starts.
Wednesday (Today)
Today, I went back to the Health Department to get my Hep B titre results and surprise, I needed a Hep B booster but the Health Department was all out and had no idea when they were going to get more in. I ended up calling about 10 places before I found someone that had it but since I’m not a child my insurance wouldn’t cover the Hep B booster. $93 later, I’m up to date on my vaccines.
What I am trying to take away from this week is that change happens. I finally have gotten to a place in my life where rather than moving backwards or standing still I actually feel like I’m moving forward.
Recently I saw a post on Facebook from a girl I went to high school with that detailed how she feels like compared to our peers she’s “behind”. She took the words right out of my brain. One of my biggest struggles is comparing myself to others, especially people my age, that I went to school with, and are pursuing the same career that I am. The important thing to remember is that the path is not always linear. Personally I am a fan of the Buddhist philosophy of Unalome. “In the Buddhist tradition, Unalome represents the path each person takes throughout their life. That road can be straight, circular, or winding.” If I ever get enough extra money to get a tattoo, that will probably be the first thing that I get done.

Updates on the Situation for Animals in Ukraine
New Post has been published on https://petnews2day.com/pet-industry-news/pet-travel-news/updates-on-the-situation-for-animals-in-ukraine/
Updates on the Situation for Animals in Ukraine
Since Russia invaded Ukraine and continues to attack, over two million people have fled the country. Many already traumatised people were being faced with the impossible decision of leaving their beloved animals behind due to the protocol for non-commercial movement of companion animals into the EU.
Animals Left Behind at Borders
The current regulations for bringing companion animals into the EU and the UK are impossible for refugees to follow in a state of war. They require that animals such as dogs and cats be vaccinated and microchipped and have a titre test for rabies – and many animals don’t meet the criteria.
PETA UK is keeping updated about the process at Ukraine’s borders, and mercifully, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia have all made entry for animals less bureaucratic. Many other countries are doing the same to allow Ukrainian refugees to travel there with their animal companions.
We strongly urge people not to leave their animals behind. Just like humans fleeing from war, companion animals will be scared and stressed and are dependent on their human guardians for comfort and security. We have been deeply moved by accounts of people walking enormous distances with their animals in their arms and have detailed below what Ukrainians need to know when arriving at border crossings of neighbouring countries in order to get their whole families, including their animal companions, to safety.
We are doing our best to keep this page up to date with information as we receive it.
New Regulations in Bordering Countries
Hungary
Animals can reportedly enter Hungary without a microchip, tattoo, proof of rabies vaccination, or titre test as long as these transition papers from the National Food Chain Safety Office (NÉBIH) have been completed.
Poland
According to the latest reports, refugees fleeing Ukraine are allowed to bring their companion animals with them across the border into Poland. Guardians must report them to the authorities once they have arrived at their destination.
Further information is available here.
Animal welfare organisations on the ground are working to rescue animals and take them to animal shelters along the Poland-Ukraine border for a chance at adoption, as well as looking after animals who have to stay in quarantine.
Romania
The chief veterinary authority in Bucharest (ANSVSA) has introduced an exception allowing animals coming from Ukraine to enter Romania with their human guardians, even if they are not vaccinated, microchipped, or tattooed and have no papers – as long as this form is completed.
PETA Germany’s contacts in the country have been in contact with the border stations to ensure that all borders have this information from the ANSVSA. People entering Romania with animals must visit the “Sanitary Veterinary Point” at the borders. If guardians do not have the required documents for the animals, they can fill out the authority’s form on the spot – then the animals can cross the border with their guardians. It seems that there is a maximum of five animals (dogs and cats) allowed per person. The situation remains opaque, however, as we are also receiving reports that – contrary to the official information from authorities – people are not being allowed to cross the border with their animal companions.
PETA Germany’s partner organisation in Romania, Eduxanima, is offering to vaccinate dogs and cats free of charge, carry out necessary blood tests, and provide the animals with sufficient food and veterinary care. Its facility is 600 km from the border in Argeș County. For more information, people are encouraged to contact Eduxanima at [email protected].
Slovakia
In Slovakia, the state veterinary office is also allowing animal companions accompanying Ukrainian refugees to enter, even if they do not meet the usual requirements. Guardians must fill out a form, which they can request from the staff of the Financial Administration of the Slovak Republic at the border, and then, upon arrival at the EU member state of their destination, they must report the animals to the local veterinary office.

Non-Border Countries
Regulations in Other EU Countries
Following European Commission advice that member states cut red tape for Ukrainian citizens arriving in the EU with companion animals, the following countries have suspended the requirement for a permit under Regulation (EU) 576/2013 until further notice. Instead, those entering these countries with companion animals must contact the local veterinary authority to establish the health status of their animal companion and start any necessary processes (such as quarantine, antibody titre determination, rabies vaccination, microchipping, and obtaining a pet passport) from there.
Austria
Animals can enter without documents, identification, or vaccination. Any veterinary measures, such as rabies vaccination, will be handled after entry.
There are no forms or regulations online yet, but we will update this page once any necessary documentation is shared.
Belgium
Ukrainian refugees travelling with animal companions (non-commercial traffic) to Belgium, without the necessary paperwork outlined under Article 32 of Regulation (EU) No 576/2013, must contact the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) to request a permit at [email protected].
In view of the emergency situation, the FASFC will temporarily allow companion animals into the country without a permit. These animals must be placed in home isolation and reported to the FASFC at [email protected].
More information is available here.
Bulgaria
Information on the simplified procedure for entry from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency is available here.
Croatia
Animal companions can enter without meeting the usual requirements or prior authorisation. You can find more information on the simplified procedure here.
Cyprus
Cyprus has relaxed its entry regulations, but guardians are advised to notify officials of their arrival by e-mailing [email protected] before entering the country with their animals if possible.
Animal companions will need to be quarantined upon arrival at the address provided to officials. Once the quarantine period has ended, officials will monitor animals’ health by regularly checking in over a six-month period. If a guardian moves or leaves Cyprus during this period, they should let officials know using the above e-mail address.
Guardians will not incur any fees for veterinary services in the course of this process.
More information is available here.
Czech Republic
Dogs, cats, and ferrets entering the Czech Republic with their guardians from Ukraine do not need a tattoo or microchip, a health certificate from a veterinarian, or the results of a blood serum test proving they are free from rabies at the point of entry. After entering the country, animals must be quarantined for 10 days, tested for rabies by a veterinarian within 72 hours, and microchipped (if they are not already). After five to 10 days in quarantine, they will be tested again and then vaccinated against rabies.
Veterináři bez hranic ČR, a charity based in the Czech Republic, is doing excellent work and offering to cover veterinary costs (including obligatory procedures and all other medication), animal food, and other basic essentials for animal companions. Find out more here.
Denmark
Animal companions can enter Denmark, even if they don’t meet the usual requirements. However, guardians are asked to contact the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration before or as soon as possible upon arrival in Denmark by filling in this form and sending it to [email protected].
The guardians will be contacted once the form has been received. They may be required to vaccinate the animals or to isolate them, if there is a risk of rabies.
See more information here.
Estonia
Estonia is accepting animal companions from Ukraine who do not meet the usual entry requirements, but refugees must inform the Agriculture and Food Authority (PTA) and Tax and Customs Board (EMTA) of their animal companion. They must fill in the notification form either in advance or at the border and send it to [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected].
More information is available here.
Finland
Refugees travelling to Finland with animal companions are authorised to enter without prior application or a permit. Guardians are asked to present the animal and any paperwork they do have to Finnish Customs at the border upon entry, and customs staff will give further instructions from there.
See more information here.
France
France is welcoming refugees with animal companions even if they don’t meet the usual entry requirements. However, guardians must contact a veterinarian or the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of the Population (DDPP) as soon as possible upon arrival if their animal companion does not meet the usual requirements.
You can find more information here and contact details for local DDPP branches here.
Germany
Germany’s Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture has published details of its temporarily relaxed entry requirements here.
Greece
Greece has also agreed to flexible measures for refugees arriving with their animal companions. Animals can enter the country without meeting the usual requirements, but guardians must notify officials before they enter the country or as soon as possible afterwards.
To notify officials, guardians should send an e-mail to [email protected], detailing the address at which they will be staying, if possible.
Ireland
Animal companions can enter Ireland through several airports and ports without meeting the usual requirements. Guardians are being asked to bring as much documentation about their animal companion as they can and to contact their destination airport or port before arrival using the contact details below: • Cork Airport [email protected] • Dublin Airport [email protected] (+353 (0) 87 417 8986) • Dublin Port [email protected] • Ringaskiddy Port, Cork [email protected] • Rosslare Europort [email protected] • Shannon Airport [email protected]
Further instructions will be issued upon arrival. More information is available here.
Italy
Like many other EU countries, animals are now able to enter Italy without the usually required documents. Once there, they will need to contact local authorities.
Italian animal protection charity LAV is helping refugees, who can call its helpline on +39 06 4461325.
Latvia
Latvia is accepting animal companions from Ukraine, even if the usual entry requirements are not met. Guardians may carry out the requirements once they have safely arrived in Latvia.
See more information here.
Lithuania
Typically, animals entering Lithuania must be properly microchipped and vaccinated, have a valid animal passport, and meet all the usual requirements. However, due to the escalating situation in Ukraine, Lithuania is reportedly allowing animal companions to enter with their human guardians. They will be microchipped, vaccinated, and quarantined upon entry.
You can read more about the entry requirements and conditions of quarantine here.
Malta
If an animal companion coming from Ukraine does not meet Malta’s usual requirements, they will still be permitted entry. However, animals may have to be quarantined and other procedures, such as vaccination against rabies, may be required.
Find more information here, and keep up to date with any changes to the restrictions here.
If you have any questions, you can contact the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights at [email protected] or on +356 21650393 or +356 99170532 (24/7).
The Netherlands
Restrictions have also been eased in the Netherlands. The nation’s food and products safety association (NVWA) does ask that the animal be reported in advance, insofar as this is possible. The rules are flexible for people travelling by car. For those travelling by plane, the animal should be reported to customs upon arrival and will be examined by a veterinarian on the spot. The NVWA does emphasise that refugees must also take their animal to a vet as soon as possible after arrival for registration, microchipping, and vaccination. Animals should also be quarantined until a visit to the vet is possible.
Portugal
All Portuguese borders and entry points have been informed that Ukrainian refugees may enter the country with their animal companions.
Guardians are asked to notify officials of their animal companion by contacting the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV) at [email protected] or the Official Veterinarians at either [email protected] or [email protected].
Officials are handling the situation on a case-by-case basis and will advise on any additional steps required.
For more information, see here.
Sweden
When refugees arrive at the Swedish border, they must report their animal companion to customs staff. If the animal doesn’t meet the usual entry requirements, customs will contact the Swedish Board of Agriculture. At this point, the animal’s guardian may be asked questions or to show documentation if it is available. The guardian may be required to take certain measures to help stop the spread of rabies, such as submitting the animal for blood samples to be taken or for quarantine. However, measures will vary, as each individual is being assessed on a case-by-case basis.
Any refugees already in Sweden who have not reported their animal companion to customs must contact a veterinarian immediately. Please note, guardians must call ahead before arriving at any veterinary facility.
The Swedish Board of Agriculture will assume the cost for any measures needed, such as microchipping.
For more information, see here.
Slovenia
Slovenia is provisionally authorising the entry of companion animals, under certain conditions set out in the application process refugees are required to complete to ensure that the entry of these animals into the EU does not pose a risk of rabies introduction or transmission.
A contact point has been established at the headquarters of the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection (AFSVSPP) for processing applications: [email protected].
More information is available here.
Regulations in Non-EU countries
India
Following an appeal from PETA India, restrictions have been relaxed and India is allowing animal companions to enter the country with stranded Indians being rescued from Ukraine. If the usual entry requirements – such as a rabies vaccination and veterinary health certificate – cannot be met, animals will be quarantined.
You can read more about the entry requirements and conditions of quarantine here.
Mexico
After Mexico announced that it would not ease border restrictions for animal companions, PETA Latino sent an urgent letter to the foreign secretary urging the country to change its policy. Shortly after, officials confirmed that restrictions have now been eased for animal companions.
You can read more about the requirements to apply for refuge in Mexico here.
Embassy of Mexico in Ukraine contact details.
Moldova
People with animal companions crossing the border from Ukraine into Moldova are being allowed entry without presenting veterinary certificates or animal passports. More information is available here.
Once over the border in Moldova, refugees can also access help including free dog food, free microchipping, free veterinary passports, and free veterinary care. For more information about support available after crossing the border, see here.
Norway
Refugees travelling with animal companions who are not vaccinated or microchipped can now enter Norway. They will not be charged for the necessary vaccination, microchipping, or quarantine. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority asks those who can to notify it before entering the country by e-mail at [email protected].
More information is available here.
Switzerland
Switzerland is now permitting people fleeing Ukraine with cats and dogs to enter the country without meeting all the usual requirements. They must complete an application form from the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office of Switzerland (below) and send it to [email protected].
Due to the high risk of disease, entry with birds classed as “poultry” and hoofed animals remains prohibited. People with such animals must contact the veterinary authorities at their current location.
More information is available on the website of the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary office of Switzerland.
The United Kingdom
PETA has received confirmation from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs that entry requirements for companion animals from Ukraine have now been altered, and emergency licences are in place for refugees entering the country with companion animals. While applying for a licence in advance is preferable to avoid delays, refugees can arrive at the border and the Animal and Plant Health Agency will assist them with simplified paperwork and cover the costs of vaccination and quarantine.
Please note that animals may be held in quarantine for up to four months, depending on the vaccination status of each animal. However, PETA is calling for this to be shortened and for regular visits from the animals’ guardians to be allowed.
If you are travelling from Ukraine with your animal companion, call +44 3000 200 301 (and select option 2) or e-mail [email protected] to find out what to do.
More information is available here.
What Are PETA Entities Doing to Help?
PETA UK has sent a letter to George Eustice, secretary of state for environment, food, and rural affairs, urging him to ease entry restrictions so that Ukrainian refugees may enter the UK with their companion animals.
PETA Germany is coordinating a delivery of nearly 20 tonnes of companion animal food as well as blankets to shelters in Ukraine. It’s a complex undertaking with lots of obstacles to overcome, but they are determined.
We will update this page with news as we receive it.
What You Can Do
Donate:
Help support PETA Germany’s work on the border. Donate to PETA’s Global Compassion Fund:
We have received reports of people wanting to help going to Ukrainian border countries.
We strongly advise against it. More and more border stations are reportedly closing to private individuals. Only shipments of aid that have been verified by customs are being allowed into Ukraine. Major aid organisations are on duty at the borders and coordinating help for refugees – with and without animals – so the best thing individuals can do is to support these organisations.

The Complete Guide to the Titer Test for Cats and Dogs
A titer test (spelt “titre” in the UK) is a diagnostic lab test. It measures the level of antibodies circulating in the blood. These antibodies are produced when antigens (like a virus or bacteria) produce a response from the immune system.the Titer Test for Cats and Dogs
It’s a simple procedure where a small sample of blood is drawn from the animal. The sample is diluted, and the antibodies are measured. The titer level is expressed as a ratio – revealing how many times the blood can be diluted before no antibodies are detected.

HOCL KILLS CORONAVIRUS
HOCL (50ppm) achieved > 5 log reduction in FCV titres in less than a minute!
Since the Coronavirus has been discovered in chickens for the first time in 1930, it has been discovered consistently from dogs, pigs, birds and humans in 1960.
It has a ssRNA as the genetic material, encrusted with skin. Its genome size is 26~32kb, and that is the large sized genome among the RNA virus. The Coronavirus enters a host, reduplicates its RNA, and makes necessary proteins.
In 2012, after the Coronavirus was discovered in Saudi Arabia, it has intensively broken out in Middle East area. This is similar to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), caused nearly 800 deaths, was spread all over the world from Asia in 2003.
The incubation period is about one week, it is transmitted through the medium of air by coughs and sneezes.
Also the virus cause severe respiratory symptoms in common with SARS, like a high fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, etc. but, It features accompanying the acute kidney injury unlike SARS and according to the research, it has six times higher fatality rate than SARS. The Coronavirus shows a fatal aspect far more than SARS.
To prevent the virus, our HOCL-1 can remove the various pathogenic bacteria. It is the way to generate disinfecting water through electrolyzing a little amount of diluted salt.
The HOCL solution generated from the HOCL-1 has a strong and widespread sterilizing power, and these systems are being used to prevent various infectious disease by sterilization.
The diagram below from the Korea Testing and Research Institute / Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention show that in less than one minute the virus is eradicated.
Features of HOCL (Hypochlorous acid)
A colorless and transparent liquid with a weak odor of chlorine like tap water.
Doesn’t cause any harm even if it enters your eyes or mouth, because it is a safe ingredient.
Minimizes environmental pollution, because it resolves itself into external environment.
Maintenance cost is saved, because there is no need for any chemicals or soaps.
With a widespread disinfectant power, it is already recognized as a safe disinfectant.
The diagram below lays out the basic methods of how the system works through the electrolysis of water mixed with a small amount of salt.
The HOCL-1 system ensures a reliable supply of electrolyzed disinfectant based highly active Sodium hypochlorite or Hypochlorite.
Without affecting the pH level, just electric current passes through tap water mixed with a small amount of Salt (NaCl) or Hydrochloric acid (HCl) in an undivided electrolytic bath, the HOCL-1 generates activated elements such as NaOCl, HOCl, OH (Hydroxyl radical), O (Oxygen) etc.

Studies have touted the effectiveness of HOCL
Title: Cleansing effectiveness of Electrolyzed Water Depending on the Nursing Procedure and Degree of Hand Contamination
Authors: Yasuko Takahashi, Akemi Takeshita, Miyoko Endo, and Minako Sasaki
Journal: Biocontrol Science, Vol.7, 2002, №3, page: 173–179
Abstract Summary: We examined the antibacterial effectiveness of hand washing with electrolyzed water (EW) depending on the type of nursing procedure and differences in the degree of bacterial contamination on hands after the procedure.
With respect to the bacteria on the hands after diapering (relatively heavy contamination), changing positions (relatively light contamination), and endotracheal aspiration (light contamination), hand washing for 10s and 30s with EW lowered the hand bacterial counts after hand washing to the same level as or lower than that before the procedures. Washing with EW was as effective as washing with medicated liquid soap and 7.5% (w/v) povidone-iodine liquid.
Based on these results, we considered that and washing for 10s with EW could be applied to any of the procedures that require direct contact with the patient’s skin (diapering) or clothing (changing positions), as well as the procedures involving no direct contact with the patient (endotracheal aspiration).

Ces dernières années, je me suis surtout consacré aux jeux de société : Arcana, The Adventurers, Attack on Titan: The Last Stand, Tokyo Ghoul: Bloody Masquerade, Fearz…
Hum…
Me Kiss Me Kiss Me.

Skipped Vaccines
Anonymous said to ask-drferox: Say if you forgot/skipped a year with vaccinations with a dog, does it have any consequences for the vaccination schedule? Can you just start where you left of or do you have to start as if it was a puppy? I'm only finding articles about how vaccinations are important, of which I'm aware, but more than that I cannot find. So, what's the usual way to go at a dog that has gaps in it's vaccination routine?
So as a general rule, whether an adult dog has skipped a year, multiple years or never been vaccinated at all, the general rules are:
A single dose for distemper, infectious hepatitis and parvovirus should confer/boost immunity in a dog over 6 months of age.
If the dog has ever had a kennel cough vaccine, one booster should be adequate to boost immunity. If it’s potentially never had a kennel cough vaccine before, then two doses a month apart are recommended, but kennel cough is an optional vaccine unless the dog is going to a boarding kennel.
Follow the instructions for the rabies vaccine manufacturer and local laws, because you don’t mess around with rabies.
Even for a puppy over 12 weeks but under 6 months, you’d just do two C5 vaccines (distemper, parvo, infectious hepatitis, parainfluenza, bordatella) and not worry about ‘catching up’ the missing first one.
Assuming the dog was lucky enough to not get sick in that earlier vulnerable window, of course.
You could also consider titre testing the dog for distemper, hepatitis and parvo, as generally that vaccine will grant immunity for three or more years so long as they’re had at least one dose after 6 months of age, but sometimes that’s more expensive than just using the vaccine.

Rabies Virus Neutralizing Antibodies in Unvaccinated Rabies Occupational Risk Groups in Niger State, Nigeria | Chapter 13 | Current Trends in Disease and Health Vol. 1
Aims: To determine the presence of rabies virus neutralizing antibodies (rVNA) as well the potency of the rVNA in rabies occupational risk humans in Niger State of Nigeria.
Study Design: Cross-sectional study.
Place and Duration: Research was conducted at the Department of Veterinary Public Health, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria and Rabies Unit, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, Atlanta, USA, between May, 2012 and March, 2013.
Materials and Methods: A total of 185 human volunteers were recruited from rabies risk occupational groups who filled a structured questionnaire on their previous bite history and vaccination status, between May and July, 2012. A 2 ml each of blood from volunteers was collected and centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 10 minutes and sera separated into pre-labeled vacutainers. Standard Rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test (RFFIT) was used to detect the presence of rVNA in the sera. Further end point titration of the rVNA positive human sera was conducted to determine the potency.
Results: The results indicated that, detectable titre of rVNA was recorded in 16.4% (23 of 140) viable human sera screened. Although from the questionnaire survey, 21.7% (5 out of the 23 positives) responded to have been vaccinated over ten years prior. At least 3 of the respondents (1 dog butcher and 2 dog meat consumers) who responded not previously vaccinated had some neutralizing antibody titre range of 0.65 – 0.7 IU/ml which is above the minimum protective titre (0.5IU/ml) recommended by WHO. Similarly, 3 respondents (2 veterinarians and 1 animal health personnel) who responded to have been previously vaccinated (> 10 years earlier) yet had a high titre range of 0.5 – 5.4IU/ml. The highest specific rate for rVNA of 25% each was seen amongst the dog butchers and pet owners followed by hunters (20%) and dog meat consumers (14.8%). Up to 125 (67.6%) of the volunteers do consume dog meat with only 12 (9.6%) of them being dog butchers who source dogs for slaughter from households within and outside their territories.
Conclusion: Although the WHO minimum protective titre of rVNA is 0.5 IU/ml, the presence of relatively high titres amongst these risk groups in this report is an indication of a serious public health threat. This study recommends the vaccination of rabies high risk groups and further screening of rabies occupational risk and non risk groups in the study area and Nigeria at large. This study concludes that there is serological evidence of rVNA in the serum of vaccinated and unvaccinated rabies occupational risk groups in Nigeria. Rabies occupational risk groups are at risk of contracting rabies without overt symptoms of rabies, but serological response with some reasonable titres that may or may not be protective.

Wait till I tell you about the vet I met today who doesn't. Believe. In. The. Rabies. Vaccine.
Just because her dog didn't have the appropriate antibody level on titre test after she gave it and entire (!) vial of multidose (ie 10ml) of rabies vaccine.
There are several reasons why her dog could not have mounted the appropriate immune response, some being: break of cold chain or immunosuppression from Ehrlichia
Currently thinking about the lady who called our clinic to set up an appointment for her dog but refused the rabies vaccine because, and I quote, “Rabies doesn’t exist anymore”

for those who are worried they may need to flee the country but are worried about bringing their pets along, this site is a good resource.
you’ll want to avoid planning to flee to any country that requires a rabies antibody titre test. the test takes months to complete and requires the assistance of a government funded laboratory. it’s necessary red tape, but not something you want to fight with in an emergency.
some countries may require a quarantine for your pet once you enter. these can be lengthy and you will be required to pay for them.
most countries will not allow you to travel in with birds or herps, i’m sorry to say. rabbits are also high risk animals for??? some reason??? a lot of places.
anyway. do your homework when planning for emergencies. this site is a big help.
