I like how Luz and King, whose arcs involve their relationship with fantasy because they're kids (in contrast to Eda, who is much older and has different baggage), have different relationships with those fantasies; Esp due to what those fantasies were.

King drops his wholesale; His fantasy was about being a tyrant who destroyed his enemies, which is inherently destructive in practice. And with him realizing how much power he DOES wield now, and must be responsible over -both in his friendship with the Collector and status as a Titan- it makes sense he just abandons that completely, especially in foil to a certain witch hunter. And he abandons that fantasy because it wasn't actually what King wanted, and he's figured that out now. His fantasy admittedly started off as a delusion fed by Eda, too.

Luz still keeps hers; She's just learned to maintain a healthy balance, deciding when and when not to embrace and pursue it. This can be attributed to Azura being far less about destroying enemies; Aside from the Gildersnake, it seems most of her stories are on the friendlier, mundane side, with things like sports and growing plants. But we do see how even the former can get distorted and hurt others, hence Wing it like Witches. Likewise, Luz holding onto her fantasy is her way of keeping her father Manny alive, and embracing her weirdness, who she is as a person, etc.

There's a dichotomy with these siblings' fantasies, and even the origin of them; King's came about as Eda humoring him, but not knowing when to make a distinction for her kid. Meanwhile Manny gave Luz's fantasy to her, and it was about keeping her spirit alive, and not just the fun... But the fun matters too of course. So Luz's relationship with her fantasy is her relationship with Manny, because of its inspiration in Dana receiving Pokemon Red from her father before his death. So she can't just drop it, Luz needs to learn to live with it healthily like Eda learns to live with the curse, etc.

And it's a way for Luz to continue her living relationship with her other parent Camila, who understands now, and wants to cultivate fantasy in her daughter and even herself again to bond over; Something Luz initially refuses out of self-loathing, and a misguided attempt to reconnect with Camila when she thought the opposite -pursuing fantasy- was what pulled them apart. But it was because of the death of their wonder and the enforcement of that by the system, and mother and daughter finally rekindle their light in For the Future together.

You can also see Titanlights' relationship with fantasy through the Titan, another parental figure whom is mutual for these sibs. The Titan is the setting and thus embodies a lot of the show's themes; The Titan is Just Some Dude after all of the insincere, destructive hype of being a God. And this is how King wants to follow. Likewise, the Titan explains to Luz that she needs to forgive herself for her dream's unintended side effects, and by passing his power onto her briefly, allows Luz to live out her dream as much as she can, and remember that afterwards. Luz internalizes both the Titan's mundanity and encouragement for her healthy relationship with fiction, and King gets his new dream by seeing his dad's spirit in action, as well as a personal message; I loaf you.

Pika-Luz

Here's some artwork for a new AU I made for Titanlights Week 2024! It started as a roughly 2,800 word short story for Day 5 (meaning it's two weeks out from now, on the 29th), but I decided to make some artwork for it. As it isn't my actual submission for that day (as I'm much more a writer than an artist), merely a companion piece, I've decided to show it off now as a preview.

This a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon AU, in which King (who is exactly the same as he is in canon at his debut) takes the role of a PMD protagonist, and in short order meets Luz. This artwork, which I based on this official art of cosplay Pikachu, depicts her.

She is not, in fact, wearing a cape. She's wearing a scarf backwards like it's a cape, and keeping it together with a star-shaped clip instead of actually bothering to tie the corners together. One side of it is purple and the other side is white. She's intended have an air of both friendliness as well as chaos and mischief about her.

Some background details:

Luz was supposed to set out on a boat to attend summer camp, but intentionally got on the wrong one to look for a magical adventure instead.

Unbeknownst to Luz, Camila was involved with an old world-saving adventure in her youth, but has since evolved into Raichu and become a doctor.

Luz is substantially stronger than average for a Pikachu, but unable to evolve. Basically like the starter Pikachu in Let's Go Pikachu.

Her favorite move is Flash, which she often uses to stun foes or light up dark places. More or less how she uses the light glyph in canon, but she glows herself instead.

In spite of being roughly the same size as King, her first reaction to him is still to pick him up in a hug and call him a little guy.

This is very much a one-shot type of AU, but everyone I've shown her to so far on discord has loved Pika-Luz so now I am sharing her with tumblr.

Luz always looking vaguely puzzled when King clings to her and begs her not to leave him, she really does not get it 😭 At best she’s like “woah, yikes!” but it doesn’t actually get through her head, she can’t comprehend actually meaning that much to someone.

Obviously a different kind of love, but she does the exact same thing with Amity. The same vaguely puzzled face and then shrugging it off. Multiple times she fails to realize the obvious signs that someone completely adores her, she may believe they like her but she can’t imagine truly mattering so much to someone, whether that’s romantically or platonically. So she just stares at them completely adoring her with a puzzled look and then shrugs it off as strangeness.

The Intruder is even better in hindsight because in Witches before Wizards, Eda tells Luz she needs to work to make her magical Chosen One fantasy happen. Luz learns to take in Eda’s advice, pursuing magical knowledge through Hexside in the next episode, only to realize Eda’s magical knowledge is also worthwhile. So Luz agrees to apply both lessons by focusing on what Eda can teach her —magic— by The Intruder, eager to put in the work to learn. Luz thinks magic is the key to making her dream come true.

But what about King, the literal and figurative little guy? Luz realizes her neglect of King caused him to act rashly, just as Luz did in her obsession with her dream, and both led to Eda’s curse emerging. So Luz owns up to her mistake by appreciating what King has to offer as well, and care about things outside of her dream. And that compels the Titan to show Luz her first spell in gratitude, for being a friend to his son.

Ironically, Luz begins her progress to become a chosen witch like Azura, not by focusing solely on that, but by acknowledging that other things and especially people matter outside of it; As far as she knows, King is a nobody irrelevant to her dream, but Luz chose to care about King and his interests even when she doesn’t need his help. Luz didn’t let her obsession with her dream make these things mutually exclusive.

And not only does Luz take her first step in being a witch, she begins to earn the Titan’s trust as well. The Titan might’ve noticed Luz taught Philip the Light glyph centuries ago, but if Philip himself in that situation means anything, Luz could’ve learned it from someone else; Her friends learn the glyphs from her! But realizing Luz’s good heart made the Titan get over any implicit skepticism and decide to be the person she learns her first spell from.

All of this kicks off a long chain of events that culminates in Luz inadvertently bringing herself to the Titan, who trusts Luz with his power. Thus, Luz becomes a chosen one after proving to the Titan why she can handle that responsibility. Luz decided there was more to life than her fantasy and it’s why she’s allowed to have her fantasy; Because she can now live her dream while remembering how it interacts with what’s outside of it.

Again, Luz’s magical journey begins by learning magic. That means earning the Titan’s trust, one spell and act of growth at a time, because magic is a gift from the Titan. It means paying attention to the world around her, because the Titan is also that world, and that world and its people is where magic lies in; Magic, Titan, the World, all one.

Learning magic was the key to becoming her fantasy, but the magic is symbolic and came from the people, literally and figuratively; One could call it the magic of friendship, which is appropriately corny the way Azura, the good witch Luz wanted to emulate, is. She befriends two Titans through the same act, making a friend means learning magic which is also making a friend.

And it works because being loved by friends was the core of that heroic fantasy for Luz, so listening to those people was what convinced them to feel the same way towards her! Magic came from the heart; Not just the Titan’s literal heart, but the compassion for others, such as what the Titan felt for King, which Luz also had. And the Titan recognizing that shared love resulted in Luz’s first spell.

Because Luz cared about more than being a hero, she became an actual hero instead of the idea of one; Getting her fantasy came less from learning magic or the aesthetics —which the Collector misunderstood in impersonating Luz, thinking it’d get them the same results— but from Luz proving she has the core sentiment behind what a hero, what a friend, even is. And the Collector learns this to understand how Luz actually got the love of two Titans, and to get the same dream, having friends.

To once again connect TOH to Bionicle (by quoting it), “It’s not what you’ve got, it’s what you do with it, that makes you a hero.” Because when Luz hears King hope that his knowledge on something would make people care about "creatures like me," it reminded Luz of the other part of Eda's Witches before Wizards lesson that she forgot; That everyone else, not just Luz, wants to believe they're special, and they also need to work to make that happen. And maybe being a witch was Luz's way of convincing others to care about someone like her. Luz got to live her dream by acknowledging someone else’s dream means a lot, too; And fittingly, she ended up helping King and so many other friends achieve their dreams as well!
