#Throwback Thursday: Skittles and the North Sea
A #ThrowbackThursday blog, back to the 2019 Tall Ships Races. An annual celebration of Tall Ships and their history - exhilarating sailing, stunning cruises and celebrations across Northwest Europe. It is insanely expensive to sail on the official race legs, but that year one of the ships was making a ‘delivery voyage’ from Aberdeen in Scotland to meet the Tall Ship Races in Fredrikstad, at a fraction of the usual cost.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Tall Ship Maybe at Liverpool. Pentax MV / Lomography Lady Grey 400
The ship in question was the 38m gaff-rig schooner Blue Clipper - sister vessel to the Tall Ship Maybe who I stumbled across in Liverpool just a couple of weeks ago.
My friend - a fellow Tall Ship appreciator - and I boarded our vessel at Aberdeen docks. Dwarfed amongst the metallic monoliths of commercial shipping, she was a welcome juxtaposition of wooden blocks and warm ropes against the unforgiving rust stained riveted walls of the freighters. An introduction to the crew, a tour of the boat and a safety drill later, sails were hoisted and we were heading out into the North Sea.
I’ll never forget the moment exciting serenity turned into stomach churning adrenalin, as we left the shelter of the harbour walls. The brutal Northerly wind slammed into the boat beam on. Our cabin was on the leeward side, that is the side away from the wind. Our bunks were at such a crazy angle, we were sleeping on the cabin walls more than the mattress.
That was the state of play for the next two nights, three days. The ship shuddering as wave after wave hit her sides, waves crashing and foaming over her bow. There was no longer any natural light in our cabin, just a dark, gurgling, watery vortex where the sky should have been. It was a new and exhilarating emotion, to feel so safe aboard a pitching and rolling sailing ship as we forged our way eastwards. The dark depths of the North Sea below us, the sails huge and full above our heads.
I was incredibly seasick. I lived on a couple of Skittles a day and spent most of the time being thrown onto the side of the ship, as I lay in my tumultuous excuse for a bed. It was surreal. Time stood still whilst the seas thrashed beneath me.
By the fourth day Norway was well within reach, the seas had calmed, and our cabin was filled with daylight. I crawled out of my bunk and up onto deck to discover a glorious summers day, the sea a sparkling, unbroken blue circle of peace. As if it had always been that way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That porthole, sun on the canvas, the Tall Ships at Fredrikstad (iPhone photos)
I peeled spuds on the deck, took the helm during a moonlit night watch, and relaxed on the warm wooden deck as we glided past the Summer Isles towards Fredrikstad.
The simplistic horizon became fragmented by the indistinct masts of distant ships, growing into beautiful brigs and schooners of all sizes and nationalities as we started to gather outside the port, waiting our turn to enter the historic harbour.
There is so much more to tell that there isn’t really the time and space for here; entering the breathtakingly beautiful port of Fredrikstad, the Tall Ships celebrations, the train journey to Oslo, terrible £25 take-away pizzas and the The Kon-Tiki Museum. The Kon-Tiki Museum is hopefully another blog for another day, as that destination had been on my bucket list ever since I first read Thor Heyerdahl’s book aged 11.
Tumblr media
My childhood hero - yes, my childhood hero is a raft! (iPhone photos)
The Tall Ships are visiting Helsinki in 2024. I LOVE Finland! By hook or crook I’m going to get there, ideally by Tall Ship but I’ll have to find out how much health I can recover once I start the neuro-physio…
…peace out ✌️

How to Throw the Ultimate Bachelor Party on a Luxury Yacht in West Palm Beach
When it comes to celebrating your last days of bachelorhood, why settle for anything less than a jaw-dropping, unforgettable experience? If you're looking for a unique and luxurious way to throw the ultimate bachelor party, there’s no better way than to set sail on a Luxury yacht charters Palm Beach. Imagine cruising through the crystal-clear waters of West Palm Beach, sipping cocktails, dancing under the stars, and enjoying the company of your closest friends on a private yacht. Whether you're a local or planning a destination getaway, a yacht bachelor party is the ultimate way to celebrate in style.
1. Choosing the Right Luxury Yacht for Your Party
The first step in throwing an unforgettable bachelor party on a luxury yacht is selecting the perfect boat for your group. Luxury yacht charters Palm Beach offer a variety of vessels that cater to different group sizes and preferences. From sleek, modern yachts to spacious, multi-deck boats, there’s a vessel suited for every party style.
Consider the number of guests attending, and be sure to select a yacht with ample space for both relaxation and entertainment. A top-tier yacht will offer features like plush seating areas, a full-service bar, a state-of-the-art sound system, and even a hot tub for ultimate relaxation. When booking, don’t forget to inquire about amenities like a professional crew to take care of all your needs and ensure that the party goes off without a hitch.
2. Set the Scene with a Theme
A theme can transform your yacht party into an epic celebration. Whether you go for a sleek, sophisticated vibe or something more laid-back and tropical, the right theme will tie everything together. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
👉 Tropical Escape: Think tiki torches, leis, tropical drinks, and a laid-back vibe. This theme is perfect for enjoying the sun and sea breeze.
👉 Casino Night: Bring the excitement of a Vegas-style casino to the water with poker tables, blackjack, and roulette. Add cocktails and high-stakes fun for a thrilling night.
👉 Champagne & Caviar: For a truly lavish experience, serve champagne and gourmet appetizers while enjoying the views from the yacht’s deck. This sophisticated theme is ideal for the groom who loves the finer things in life.
A great theme will not only set the tone but also influence your party decor, outfits, and entertainment choices.
3. Food and Drinks: A Feast Fit for a Bachelor
No party is complete without fantastic food and drinks, and a luxury yacht is no exception. Work with the yacht charter company or a local catering service to create a menu that fits your theme and taste. Here are some popular options:
👉 Gourmet BBQ: Have a private chef prepare fresh grilled seafood or steak on the deck. A BBQ experience offers a casual yet delicious dining option for guests to enjoy.
👉 Sushi Bar: If you’re looking for something more refined, hire a sushi chef to create an interactive sushi bar. Your guests can enjoy freshly made rolls while sipping on premium cocktails.
👉 Open Bar: Offer a selection of cocktails, beer, and premium spirits. Consider signature cocktails that reflect the groom’s personality or favorites.
For those with a sweet tooth, don’t forget a fun cake or dessert bar. Think mini cupcakes, chocolate fondue, or even custom bachelor-themed cookies to satisfy the cravings.
4. Entertainment: Keep the Party Going
A luxury yacht charter provides the perfect opportunity for unforgettable entertainment. Whether you want a lively party atmosphere or something more relaxing, there’s no shortage of options. Here are a few ideas to make your yacht party come to life:
👉 Live DJ or Music Playlist: Hire a DJ to keep the party alive with great music, or create your own playlist to get everyone dancing.
👉 Water Sports: Add a little adventure to your outing with water sports like jet skiing, paddleboarding, or even wakeboarding. Your yacht charter may even offer water toys and equipment for the ultimate thrill.
👉 Fun Boat Outings for Bachelorettes: While the bachelor party may steal the spotlight, why not extend the fun to the bachelorette party as well? Organize a combined event where both parties enjoy the beauty of the water together, while still keeping the festivities tailored to each group.
For a more laid-back vibe, consider hiring a photographer to capture the day, ensuring the memories last forever.
5. A Sandbar Boat Rental Charter: Perfect for Group Activities
For a truly unique experience, consider adding a Sandbar boat rental charter to your bachelor party plans. A sandbar stop allows your group to anchor the yacht in shallow waters and jump off for a swim or a beach volleyball game. Many Boat rental Palm Beach services offer sandbar packages, where you can enjoy the pristine waters while taking a break from the yacht’s hustle and bustle.
This stop gives your group a chance to relax and enjoy the surroundings while still having the privacy and freedom that only a luxury yacht can provide.
6. Onboard Activities for Bonding and Fun
On a luxury yacht, the activities are just as important as the food and drinks. Plan a few engaging activities that encourage interaction and keep the fun flowing throughout the day. Some ideas include:
👉 Bachelor-themed Games: Whether it’s trivia about the groom, drinking games, or challenges, get everyone involved in the fun.
👉 Fishing: If the groom is an outdoors enthusiast, a little friendly competition to catch the biggest fish can be a great addition to the day.
Conclusion: Set Sail for the Ultimate Bachelor Party Experience

Cape Coral Sightseeing: A Journey Through the Waterfront Wonderland!
When I first planned my trip to Cape Coral, I had one goal in mind: to experience this unique city, famous for its network of over 400 miles of canals—the most extensive in the world. But like many travelers, I was concerned that Cape Coral might be just another overhyped destination, filled with tourist traps and little substance. However, what I discovered was a place rich in natural beauty, diverse activities, and a laid-back vibe that quickly won me over.
Tumblr media
Problem: Overcoming the Tourist Trap Perception
Before I set foot in Cape Coral, I was worried that the city would be another tourist-heavy spot, where the real charm of the place was overshadowed by commercialized attractions. I didn’t want to spend my vacation stuck in crowded areas, missing out on the authentic experience that makes Cape Coral special.
Agitation: Missing the True Cape Coral Experience
There’s nothing worse than visiting a new place and feeling like you’ve missed out on what truly makes it unique. With Cape Coral, I knew there was more to the city than what meets the eye, but I wasn’t sure how to find those hidden gems. The thought of leaving without truly experiencing the essence of Cape Coral was something I couldn’t shake.
Solution: Discovering Cape Coral’s True Spirit
So, I decided to dig deeper, get off the beaten path, and immerse myself in Cape Coral sightseeing that truly reflects the city’s character. Here’s how I did it.
Morning at the Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve
I started my day with a visit to the Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve, one of the largest preserved green spaces in Cape Coral. This 365-acre park is a haven for nature lovers, offering a peaceful retreat from the city’s more bustling areas. I arrived early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and was greeted by the sound of birds and the sight of mangroves stretching as far as the eye could see. The park features a 1.2-mile walking trail that winds through the mangroves and along the river, providing plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife like herons, eagles, and even the occasional alligator. For just $10, you can also rent a kayak and explore the waterways at your own pace, which I highly recommend.
Exploring Cape Coral’s Canals
Next, I wanted to experience Cape Coral’s famous canals. With over 400 miles of waterways, Cape Coral is often called the "Waterfront Wonderland." I booked a guided boat tour with one of the local companies, which cost me around $35 for a two-hour trip. As we cruised through the canals, our guide shared fascinating stories about the city’s development and pointed out the various types of homes lining the water. The canals are not only a significant part of the city’s identity but also a great way to see Cape Coral from a different perspective. I was particularly struck by the sense of tranquility on the water, far from the noise of the city.
Lunch at the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill
After a morning of exploration, I was ready for some food. I headed to the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill, a popular waterfront spot with stunning views of the Caloosahatchee River. The place was buzzing with energy, but I managed to find a spot on the deck overlooking the water. The menu offers a variety of seafood dishes, but I went for the fish tacos, which were both fresh and filling. The best part? Watching the boats pass by as I enjoyed my meal.
Afternoon at the Cape Coral Yacht Club
With a full stomach, I made my way to the Cape Coral Yacht Club, one of the city’s oldest attractions, established in 1958. The Yacht Club is a community hub with a public beach, a fishing pier, and a community pool. I spent some time relaxing on the beach, which is small but well-maintained, and then took a stroll along the pier. The views of the river were spectacular, and I could see why this spot is a favorite among locals. The Yacht Club also hosts various events throughout the year, so it’s worth checking the schedule if you’re visiting.
Sunset at Rotary Park
As the day wound down, I decided to catch the sunset at Rotary Park. This 97-acre park is another great spot for nature lovers, with walking trails, a butterfly house, and an observation tower that offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. I climbed the tower just in time to watch the sun dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the landscape. It was a perfect ending to my day of Cape Coral sightseeing.
Conclusion: Cape Coral Sightseeing Beyond the Surface
In the end, Cape Coral proved to be much more than just a tourist destination. It’s a city with a rich natural environment, a deep connection to its waterways, and a laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle. Whether you’re kayaking through the mangroves, cruising the canals, or simply enjoying a meal by the water, Cape Coral offers a unique sightseeing experience that’s both authentic and memorable.
If you’re planning a trip to Cape Coral, my advice is to take your time and explore beyond the usual spots. There’s so much more to this city than meets the eye, and it’s worth discovering every bit of it.

Well here are a few… Buy in Barcelona Make sure you don’t miss a visit to the shops when you stop in Barcelona, because you would definitely regret it. Shop to the sound of street musicians and local entertainers at Plaça de Sant Josep Oriol, filled with designer boutiques and handicraft shops this is the ideal place to purchase some trinkets to remember your Mediterranean adventure. For a true taste of international shopping, the Avinguda Diagonal has all the big designer names, or if you like to take breaks from shop to shop try Diagonal Mar, which has cinemas and play spaces, as well as a walkway to the sea- so your fellow travelers will be kept busy too!. Best Restaurants in the Turks and Caicos Islands
Tumblr media
The islands are home to some of the world's best restaurants. The Ritz-Carlton has its own restaurant, BLT, serving USDA quality beef and certified Black Angus. The menu includes locally-sourced ingredients, such as fresh fish and fried plantains. The setting is spectacular and guests can watch the sun set over the turquoise waters or enjoy live music and karaoke. The food is fresh, local and delicious, and the views of the lagoons are simply breathtaking.
For the ultimate dining experience, try restaurants of Turquoise vacation rentals. The island's conch is the main attraction, and the conch is so easy to catch that it's legal and delicious. While visiting, you'll want to try the pirate's pot, which features both conch and lobster. This traditional, authentic Caribbean dish is a perfect way to start your vacation in Turks and Caicos.
One of the best restaurants in the Turks and Caico's main island, Providenciales, is home to a wide variety of cuisines. Authentic, island-style dishes are served in rustic, cozy restaurants that boast breathtaking views of the water. In addition to the local fare, you can also enjoy international cuisine, with seafood and fish being the primary ingredients. Whether you're traveling on business or vacationing with the family, you'll enjoy eating local, fresh seafood in some of the island's finest restaurants.
One of the most popular cruise ship destinations in the world, Grand Turk boasts a vibrant culinary scene. While Grand Turk is the best island to dine while on vacation, you'll be spoiled for choice. The beaches are pristine and the cuisine is fresh and affordable. Jack's Shack offers traditional island flavors and an open-air tiki bar, where you can sip an ice-cold cocktail or sip a tropical drink.
One of the main islands in the Turks and Caicos is Providenciales, which has the second-largest barrier reef in the Atlantic. The clear, shallow water is complemented by crushed pink coral sea bottom, a type of seafloor that is only found in the South Atlantic. Snorkelers can explore the 14-mile barrier reef on Provo's north shore, or the 7,000-ft underwater wall off Grand Turk Island. They can swim alongside dolphins and occasionally see reef sharks. A custom private charter from Silver Deep, a tour company that offers a variety of activities and excursions, can also take them to the most remote spots.
When traveling to the Turks and Caicos, you'll need to make sure you bring some money. The official currency of the country is the U.S. dollar, so you can use it for all your purchases. While you're on vacation, you'll want to tip your server accordingly. Just like in the United States, you can tip based on how you'd normally tip in your own country. You can also rent a car, which can be cheaper.
For a romantic dinner, the picturesque Grace Bay Restaurant has a palapa-style open-air setting with a view of the turquoise sea. The atmosphere is intimate, so you'll want to dress in island chic. An evening glow from oil lamps is a perfect complement to the island's tropical climate. The restaurant's kitchen makes use of the freshest produce and seafood from the island, and guests are served exquisitely.

Entry #10 August 25,2018
So this was amazing. It’s been quite some time that I’ve felt this way. I really like don’t even know how to explain it. It’s just me feeling the happiest I ever felt. Even tho I was a nervous wreck. I met up with this girl that I kinda knew but didn’t talk to from high school. We met up at Disneyland. And our first destination was the tiki bar. When she walked up, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The most stunning woman I’ve ever seen in my life. I forgot about everything and was so focused on how beautiful she looked. Her cute light brown eyes. Her beautiful smile. She was wearing this dress. It was a blue striped dress. She just looked amazing. And this was just the start of how I felt. My ID was expired since it was my birthday last week so I haven’t gotten my new one and they wouldn’t serve me. So I couldn’t buy her a drink. Dumb. But that’s okay we went into Disneyland and I’m pretty sure I had the best time of my life. We talked and talked about everything. We have so much in common. Did I tell you that intellectually she was the most beautiful woman as well? I don’t know what it is about her but she just made me so happy for the 4 ish hours we hung out for. While we were walking we went on big thunder and literally got on at the perfect time. The fireworks were going on and right when you go over the second hill you can see them all. And the goat trick we both knew and fucking did together. We got off the ride and took the back way to fantasyland and we watched the fireworks cause it was the most amazing view ever. I don’t think I’d want to experience that with anyone else. We rode Peter Pan which is literally a 2 second ride but we both love it. We rode pirates, jungle cruise, Peter Pan, big thunder. I just will never forget her smile. I don’t know if she’s into me like I’m into her but I really hope so. She’s the kind of woman I would never let go of. I would do everything to impress her everyday. I would strive her make her happy every second. I would do special things for her out of the blue just to see her smile. She was just absolutely stunning. When we left I walked her to her car. Which was the absolute opposite direction of where I was parked but I didn’t care. I just wanted that extra time. I didn’t hug her. I didn’t even try to make any moves. I literally wanted to just spend that time. I didn’t wanna ruin it. Now I talk to her quite a bit over text. And we like get along and are super sarcastic and shit. I really like her. But I’m a chicken shit and I want to be careful. I don’t wanna ruin it. She’s just so fucking amazing. I don’t even know what to say. Anyway I’m gonna post some pictures from the Fireworks. They were great. I take shitty pictures like that soccer mom trying to fit her kid and the team in photos while they’re playing. So don’t mind my shitty photos.

Booking the Perfect Spot
ALEX
I follow Marissa and the travel agent to a cubicle near the back. The inside of the agency is similar to Marissa’s workplace. Except the shelving is builders’ beige instead of grey. A wall of brochures displays Island cruises and Asian tours instead of media packages. My mind keeps drifting. I’m still getting used to the idea I’m going to be a dad. I didn’t believe her until I saw the paperwork. With her name on it.
“So you’re wanting all-inclusive, for roughly twenty guests.” The agent goes around a low fabric barricade, sits behind the tacky arborite counter. “Any ideas of where, exactly?”
“Somewhere tropical,” Marissa says. “Outside of the US. Ideally the Caribbean.”
“I’ll see what I can find for you!” The agent rifles through a filing cabinet. A black and gold placard on the wall behind her reads, Our Customer is always right! She brings out a hanging file labelled Destination Weddings—Caribbean. It contains a thick manila folder full of package vacations. She leans closer to her computer terminal, shoulders hunched as if she’s walking into a gale.
“Okay!” The agent fans out the folders like a stage magician performing a trick with giant playing cards. A brochure is stapled to the front of the top file. A white three-story mansion with a terracotta rooftop overlooks a rocky outcrop. Below, a sparkling turquoise ocean. She sets it aside, spreads out a folder of some resort in Puerto Rico. I don’t want to do this. I hate flying.
“Weren’t they just hit by two hurricanes?” I ask. The agent’s face blanches. She moves that one to the bottom of her stack. She brings out one for an island I’ve never had any desire to visit. I zone out while she and Marissa compare amenities, the distances to various tourist spots. I glance at the folder the agent had set aside. The sticky on top piques my curiosity. New price written in pencil and underlined twice. As in lower price. Much lower. I slide the folder around, lift up the sticky. Mariana Key. Huh. I’d seen a headline about that place. This morning in the elevator at work. All I can say is, there is a God. I nudge Marissa with my elbow. I’m about to open the brochure; the agent shoves it out of my reach. “We’re not currently selling that package.” We’ll see about that.
Marissa snatches it from her. “Why not? This is exactly what I’m looking for!” She flips it open. “It’s the only resort on the island! And the beach is totally private!”
The agent grips the top of the brochure. She tries to tug it out of our hands. My fingers are stronger. She can’t say anything negative about packages they promote. Time to play dumb. Every muscle in my body constricts. I hope this works. I furrow my brow at the agent. “Why, where is it?”
“Mariana Key is near the Bahamas. However, I would seriously recommend against—”
“Check out that beach!” Marissa points to the post-it note. “Wow, what a deal!”
I read aloud from the copy. “Facilities indoors and out, state-of-the-art sound system for bands or a DJ, all-day buffet, clifftop view from the altar ...” You never know when a cliff might come in handy.
“The rooms are gorgeous! And look, a Tiki bar!”
“I have a thing for Tiki bars,” I tell the agent. “Some day when I have a house with a basement, I’ll build one. Yucca plants, hibiscus flowers, freaky wooden masks, murals of hula dancers, the works.”
Marissa peers at the tiny photo of a grass hut with wicker stools set around. “It’s so cute!”
I would go with tacky. The agent pulls the flyer. Marissa refuses to let go. “That one is cheap for a reason,” she says. “There was a last minute cancellation because the State Department has—”
“This is the bargain of a lifetime. It’s perfect. We’ll take it.” Marissa grins at me. I mirror her grin.
“I’ve seen the news. The media hypes every backwater skirmish as if WWIII is about to blow.”
“By law I have to warn you that the political climate is unstable there and—”
“Even the flights are ideal.” Marissa is fixated on the brochure. Good. “We’d get in by lunch and still have the whole day!” She lets go of the flyer, pounds her fists on her lap.
“Legally, I have to disclose one thing first.” The agent slides out her keyboard drawer from beneath her desk. I know. I scan the Wall Street Journal and New York Times from cover to cover. Every day. “The current governor is extremely unpopular and there’s a high risk of a political coup.”
I flip to the back of the brochure. I point to the map of the island. “You see, Marissa? The resort’s nowhere near the main town. We have nothing to worry about.”
She studies the map. Calculating the nearest distance to any village, I’ll bet, were Christine to follow us. I knew she’d like this place. “The island is sixteen miles across … population eighteen hundred. I’m surprised they’re big enough to have a governor.” The gears are ticking in her head. I grow nervous until she faces me, a twisted grin on her face. She pushes the brochure back to the agent. “We’ll do it!”
The agent bugs her eyes out at me. I point at the sign behind her. “I’ve probably seen bigger wars during Christmas at grandma’s.” To humour her, I let her show us the rest of the ones available.
I’m quick to point out how one would be at a much larger resort full of random guests who’d be able to gawk at the entire ceremony. Another is in the same part of Mexico Marissa’s mom is from. She declines that one, saying the crime rate there is insane. St. Lucia would require three stopovers. Bermuda sits atop a volcano in the middle of the Atlantic (Nope, I don't care how long it's been dormant). The one in Barbados would cost us (and each of our guests) more than three times what Mariana Key would cost (for a shabbier hotel with a seaweed-strewn coral beach nearby).
The agent sighs, puts the rest of her folders aside. She begins entering our reservation into the computer system. Marissa squeezes my hand, gives me a sheepish grin. I try to return her smile. Then I blow out a deep, nervous sigh. This is all so … sudden.
