The Gems - Phoenix

Members of bands come and go, but it’s always interesting when former members of bands come together to make new bands, especially when they make music that sounds like the same music that they were making before. It can either be a slap in the face to their original band, because if the new band is better, it doesn’t look good for the original, or it can be an extension of what they were doing, even if it isn’t necessarily better. If it’s different, however, it can make for a good experience to have something different from a certain musician. Enter Swedish hard-rock The Gems, who are composed of former members of the Swedish band Thundermother, but that is a band that is known for having a turnover for members. In 2023, three of the four members, all but the lead guitarist and principle songwriter, left the band, and they started their own band, The Gems. I’ve only listened to a little bit of Thundermother, but their whole vibe is that they’re a relatively generic hard-rock / heavy metal band that doesn’t do anything unique, although they were good for what they were. I decided to check out The Gems’ debut album, aptly entitled Phoenix, because there hasn’t been much coming out lately, so I didn’t have anything to lose. How’s this album? Is The Phoenix an album worth hearing, whether you like Thundermother or you want something better?

Well, in regard to the first question, this album’s pretty solid, but the second question is a bit harder to answer. The album is worth listening to, but I don’t know if it’s better than Thundermother, or anything out of the ordinary. Phoenix is a pretty standard hard-rock album, but the thing with is that it’s nothing you haven’t heard before. That’s not to say it’s a bad album, though, as this record is very well-done. With 3/4s of the last Thundermother album coming to this band, you’ll like this if you’ve heard the last album from them, but I’m not extremely familiar with it, only listened to it in passing a year or two ago, so I don’t have too much of a comparison. This album is really solid, though, and if you enjoy Thundermother and hard-rock / traditional heavy metal, you’ll like this, too.

Unfortunately, the main issue that I have with this album is that it’s extremely generic and bland. Everything sounds great, such as the vocals and main riffs, but I’ve heard all this before. A few songs really stick out, such as “Send Me To The Wolves,” because the hook is really strong, but this record is 15 songs, and a few of them are short forgettable interludes that don’t add anything to the album. Remove those, and you’re left with 12 songs that’s some solid hard-rock that sounds like it came out of the 1980s, but if you’ve listened to any rock or metal from the era, let alone a lot of new bands that harken back to that era, you’ve heard this. I wish I could say a ton more, but this album hasn’t stuck with me compared to other stuff I’ve been played, because I’ve just heard all of this before, and your mileage with this is dependent on how much you love this type of music. I don’t know if I’ll come back to this album much this year, but I do enjoy it, and if I’m in the mood for this kind of stuff, I can see myself returning to it a few times.

Hera stepped into the living room (that was about the size of the average mortal house), combing through her hair with her fingers and trying to braid it. She walked around for a bit, mostly focused on trying to get her hair under control, before freezing in place as she noticed Metis and Zeus on the couch, sleeping. Her hands fell to her side, the braid falling apart. It felt like she couldn't breathe, couldn't move. After all this time, he fell back into his old habits? -🦚

Zeus slowly fluttered his eyes open, he'd spent what must have been hours working on his Plan with Metis. Nothing was exactly coming up, but Metis had suggested a celebration for Hera since June was coming up... he didn't have the heart to tell her June was nearly two months away,

His gaze fell on Hera, he was about to offer a small smile and a wave before looking back at the Goddess asleep on his shoulder. Suddenly, he had become VERY aware of how this situation seemed.

"Okay... I know what this looks like." He he muttered, looking back at his wife and keeping his voice low as not to wake up Metis. "But I swear, it's not."

Ok so, you know how in A Miser Brothers Christmas (aka that one unofficial sequel special that aired on ABC Family once and never showed up again) they introduced a bunch of other nature siblings in that one scene?

Well, I thought to myself “hmm what if I “demake” their character designs to make it look like that they were designed by the Rankin/Bass crew.”

So, I did just that!

These were pretty fun to make, so let me introduce them to you all

Starting off with the ones you already know, Mother Nature, Snow Miser, and Heat Miser. 🌿❄️🔥

Then there are The Wind Siblings North Wind, East Wind, South Wind, and West Wind. 🌪️🍂☀️🌸

And then there’s the duo Lighting and Thunder. ⚡️🌧️

This hunky guy named Earthquake. 🌎

And finally there’s The Tide twins aka High Tide and Low Tide. 🌊

I’m pretty pleased with all of them! The irony is that I like these supposed “demake” designs over their looks in AMBC (especially North Wind like, holy shit.)

But yeah, hope y’all like them as much as I do.
