There is so much more waste out there then your brain can imagine.
That’s a fact. There is SO MUCH waste out there just in clothing alone. After it’s been ‘consumed’, we think to donate it to give it another life. When that happens to literally millions of items, the chance of what was formally your stuff getting that well deserved second chance is diminished significantly.
I’m going to give you guys a tiny behind the scenes on a warehouse I’ve partially toured yesterday for a job. It was at a goodwill location with a bin style layout for second hand consumers. The crowd of people there were of all ages and backgrounds. The moment one of the workers put a fresh bin out, they swarmed it to pick through it like a horde of zombies.
The warehouse portion of the store was as huge as your mind could think of in terms of ‘large spaces’ but bigger. I had to follow one of the associates to the offices to interview, and I slowed to look at the literal HUNDREDS of gaylords stacked in 2’s in the middle of the storage space. Every single gaylord was stuffed with clothing. If you don’t know, a Gaylord is a really big foldable cardboard box that bulk stuff like produce get shipped in. It didn’t even hit me that all of them were packed to the brim with clothing until I rounded one of the corners to see the other side of the gaylord wall, were I saw the clothing bales. Visually, it was an assault to the eyes; there was so much to see but you couldn’t just stop to gawk at it all. As I walked through, I couldn’t help but to think of how much that all must have costed first hand. How much is a normal long sleeve t shirt, $25+? Multiply it by 10,000+ in every color of the rainbow, every mix, every match, every style, and without repeating your outfits. In long sleeve shirts alone, that’s a staggering $250k. Jeans and denims are popular right now and are flooding first hand brands and trickling their way to thrifts/second hands. According to my fast research online, both men’s and women’s brand new store brand are selling for upwards of $156 on average. Ask yourself, “how many pairs of jeans do I see at my favorite thrift stores? How many racks of jeans are available second hand right now?” and see if you can come up with a number. Sense denim jeans are so common, I could reasonably use the same 10k number for the estimated amount of jeans that are in that warehouse right now and say with some level of confidence that there are at least $1,560,000 in new/like new garments hidden beneath the rest of the unwanted clothing. The numbers, on all sides, were staggering and sickening to think about. If people took the time and effort to do so, I promise you they could have stacked all of the items (both folded and unfolded) to the ceiling.
Backing away now from those dizzying numbers; coming out from the warehouse portion and back to the bins, I was near breathless. ‘Breathtaking in a queasy way’ is my best way of conveying my experience with facing, head on, how much people are consuming and discarding. I can say with absolute confidence and certainty that everything you’re seeing and reading online about the waste/pollution problem in the clothing world is true. This is one of those issues that you can only really display online to get your point across sadly, and that might take away some of the reality of the problem. The rampant message to consume more and more of the clothing that these big brand stores are offering at every opportunity they have is one issue in a sea of many, but we can start to solve it ourselves. The power to do so is in our own hands sense this is a social issue that we have to tackle together. This isn’t an issue that a government can give an answer or a set of answers for.
I encourage you to take the deep dive into your wardrobe when you have time to pick out what you’re wearing and not. Ask yourself, “What makes me wear this? What makes this shirt worth keeping? What element of this style of garment do I like, and why do I like it? Why am I keeping this if I haven’t thought about or touched this item in the past 6 months to a year?” And see what your answers are. Separate your worn from your unworn and see what can reasonably be recycled or repurposed at home before it goes to the thrift.
Be passionate about preventing waste. Maybe one day, we won’t have to worry about the mountains of clothing and items stuck in warehouses and in dumps. For now, take it slow.

hello, here to pester you with a question >:3!
where do you get the money to make your cosplays?? i'm in the middle of crafting a bunch of stuff for a plant convention and gyatt damn everythings so pricey
:((
along with the storage ive been getting this one a bunch too haha
to tell true, this is no fault on your part so no frets here at all !!! BUT i'm not comfortable discussing my personal finances online. because on a wide scale, anything in regards to money gets incredibly niche to a person's circumstances and will make people get upset/can leave you vulnerable to a lot of bad things. My pay scale and spending habits are not something i'm hip to sharing online since its really private and opens a lot of dangerous doors. (also my spending habits are not exactly healthy or generalizable either.) I'm not saying this to like...dodge being a secret billionaire or anything, but even if i say "i work a STEM job" I've had people get weird about even just that information.
That being said, there are ways i make cosplay more affordable.
usually in-store fabric shopping at say joanns, is just about as expensive as it gets. if you have to shop only at joanns, michaels, etc the bill racks up fast. There are some in-store fabric shops that are cheaper, especially if they are wholesalers or general fabric warehouses, but those are not easy to find outside of cities most often. Joanns does have good coupons, and i can only shop at joanns these days if i have a coupon or there's a sale on that fabric type i'm interested in!
online wholesale fabric shops are a good way to find fabrics that are at lower prices, but then it does incur extra shipping costs. because of that i try to limit the number of orders I make (more orders, more extra shipping). this looks like grouping orders between projects, or even compromising on fabric types based on the stock of one website so i dont have to split an order between two sites.
sometimes you really do have to sacrifice material type. theres been a number of projects this year that i wanted to make out of a nicer type of fabric, even Thistle for example i considered making out of a dupioni, but it was just too dang expensive. dupioni would be around $25 a yard...vs poly suede which is $6. or even a cheaper satin at $3 a yard is a common sub i use as well. I also very frequently have to throw out entire cosplay ideas just based on cost since its just not feasible no matter how many compromises i make.
reduce the burden by extending your timeline. unfortunately theres no way around it, most projects i make are $200-300, and thats....fairly low in the grand scheme of things for crafting-focused cosplayers on mid sized projects. but either way, dropping all of that at once in one place is a huge blow to the wallet. but if you break up that whole $200 cost into say...$20 chunks from one week to the next, its softer. if you cant or dont want to reduce your budget, expanding your timeline is a good solution. now granted, that does cause a problem with the whole "less orders means less shipping costs" but the weighing of those two scenarios has to be done person to person/project to project.
STOCKING UP....when there are sales or other things, building a horde can be a great move. like silverbell didnt actually show up much on my finances this month because all the fabric i used on his suit was storage fabric. so it was ""free"" to me this month, because i already bought it.....3 years ago...and that money isnt real anymore haha.
this is really regional and depends on where you are, but thrift stores can have material sections that have good fabrics as well as sheets/blankets/base garments etc. ive been weirdly lucky with finding great fabrics at thrift stores...like literal joanns fabric for half the cost there, but thats super SUPER hit or miss and not something i rely on, but i do check that section whenever i'm there
#i dont usually like to talk money bc not only can it get dicey safety wise but also theres no quick way to talk about it haha#BUT THIS IS WHAT I GOT....#i have to change my plans or cancel them outright due to money a lot

I've been practicing making vests so that when Oaken comes home (and every dog after that) I don't have to spend $60 on a new one every 3 months. Unsurprisingly, the most expensive part of doing this when you have a massive horde of fabric in your basement is the hardware.
But today. I popped by my local Humane Society Thrift Store. And they were having a 50-cent sale on dog collars :-)
Anyway, nine collars provided me with the equivalent of $45 worth of hardware from joanns. Which is a little insane and makes me think Joanns is probably wildly overpricing this stuff, but since I wasn't going to buy it in bulk (I don't need that many vests), I feel really happy about spending a solid $5.

today I took home so many books from thrift stores for so little money and I just feel like a little pirate with a treasure horde I practically stole away

I’d recommend IKEA (obvs) but also some thrift stores for things that speak to you. Try not to horde in case you’re thinking of a short lease and the landlord has big restrictions. Also, if you’re not planning on living at home for longer periods of time (because you have longer work hours and spend more time outside of home than inside), id invest in minimal furniture so you can save more. Also, look for organizers on Amazon or smth to save space and optimize room.
Thank you 💞🫶🏽

Alright that's enough. I cant keep buying small things from thrift stores and dollar trees with the intent to paint/mod them and not do it.
I'm getting close to horde level.

OK, but:
Four months ago or so my partner and I went to the ReStore (Habitat for Humanity-run thrift store focusing on stuff for your house, ranging from furniture to doors) that's in a nearby suburb, rather than our usual practice of going to the one in the city we live in, and found that it had a lot more furniture and a lot fewer doors. Basically, more focused on decoration than renovation/repair. Which is fine. And I found an Effanbee doll there.
Effanbee 11 in and 18 in dolls during the 70's and 80's were a thing my mom and I both loved, and about 14 years ago I went on a kick for trying to buy all my old Effanbees because I'd lost the originals or ruined their clothes. I was successful. Now I don't buy hordes of Effanbees anymore. But there she was, for $10! How could I resist?
So every time we have gone to the suburban ReStore after that, I check their doll section, since they actually have one. it is absolutely absurd to imagine they'd have another Effanbee. The world is full of dolls that are not Effanbee. The likelihood is so low.
Last Friday they had another Effanbee.
So, you know, maybe a magic pie will appear again in that dog's magic pie bush. Who knows?

(i saw youre also into jjk) :D!
If Sukuna was able to just hang out like a normal person, they would be total nail besties. You cannot tell me that they both don't spend literally all of their money on expensive nails every other week.
Also, she loves to shop (as we know) but she isn't the richest, so I can totally see her going to thrift stores all the time and finding the Best stuff but also hordes nicknacks like no other.

I’m glad you got dinner at a decent time :) I successfully discorded!! /and/ I ate a real meal!! I want to sew these patches onto my jacket but I also feel like I shouldn’t? Yknow when you have something nice and you feel like you should save it but there’s really no reason to? That thing. Today has been my happiest day in weeks :) -A
Ahh! Yay for successfully discording and eating a real meal! Proud of you. My dinner was basically just mozzarella sticks.
I'll make a real meal tonight. I totally get that feeling. Whenever I get something cool like that I'm always torn between wanting to USE it or keep it pristine--my biggest thing is stickers. I currently don't have a jacket I can sew patches on (I need to change that, I should plan a trip to the thrift store to try to hunt something down). But stickers? I horde them and keep them like they're my little dragon horde and I am afraid to use them on ANYTHING. (I did convince myself to stick a bunch on my water bottle and that felt like a huge victory). I'm so glad that you had such a good day. Any good/interesting plans for today?

Update to this btw: He got fired for stealing from the store yesterday (mind you I work at a thrift store)
The count for game consoles alone that we know he took is:
2 Brand New PS5s
8 PS4s
Around 6 PS3s/PS2s
2 xbox 360s
1 xbox one
Also this idiot decided to brag to people about his theft habits. Which is how we know all this. And he told everyone about how he doesn’t sell any of it. He hordes it and apparently has a tiny path through his room. God I’m so excited to block him like everywhere now
I’ve asked reddit but im honestly more intrigued to hear tumblr’s answers. What are your guys’ suggestions for getting a dude who is also my coworker to leave me the fuck alone?
