At this point, Rachel had no idea what she and Noah were to each other. One minute they were fantastic and the next they were on the outs. Half the time she felt like she was on an emotional roller coaster and truth be told, she wasn’t quite sure if the highs were worth the ride. Today though she needed him. She was nervous and stressed. The critics were going to be at her show. Watching her every move and listening to her every note. Something Noah didn’t seem to care about. So she left the apartment without word. While she didn’t have any long term plans for after the show, she did know a drink was in order. Luckily the bar nestled in the theater was still open by the time she’d gotten all the green paint off her body. That’s when she saw a familiar and truly welcomed figure. She didn’t know what he’d say to her question, but when he did speak, his words warmed her heart. How could they not? In that moment, nothing they previously said to one another mattered. All that concerned her was figuring out the best way to convey her feelings. So, instead of saying anything, she closed the gap between them, cradled his face and pressed her lips to his, “Thank you,” she murmured before allowing herself a moment to get lost in his kiss.
why did you come? ❜ - Rachel
Puck had debated on coming. He had been toying around the idea of it for days. He had been an absolute ass to Rachel, so why would he show up? Here he was, straightening his tie, wanting to look his best for her. She couldn't have a slob running around supporting her.
Hand rotated the glass in his hand, liquid sloshing around, yet not spilling. When he heard that voice, he knew at that moment who exactly was talking to him. Spinning around, eyes landed on Rachel. "I came for you, Rach."

NEW FROM FINISHING LINE PRESS: In the Mourning Grove by Susan Auerbach
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/in-the-mourning-grove-by-susan-auerbach/
In the Mourning Grove is a collection of #poems in the key of #grief that will resonate with anyone who has experienced #loss. From a young girl’s yearning for siblings to a middle-aged mother’s lament for her adult child, the poems bring lyricism, music, and spirituality to moments of heightened emotion. The first half of the book consists of poignant elegies to and about the poet’s son, Noah, who died by #suicide at age 21. The second half explores a range of sorrows, from parents’ divorce and early deaths to various losses of innocence and the passing of a beloved pet. The book is a life-affirming beacon and companion for the grief that many of us carry, an invitation to venture without fear into—and beyond—the mourning grove.
Susan Auerbach is a retired professor of education who returned in midlife to her first love of creative writing. Her poems have appeared in Spillway, Gyroscope Review, Greensboro Review, and other journals, as well as in her memoir, I’ll Write Your Name on Every Beach: A Mother’s Quest for Comfort, Courage & Clarity After Suicide Loss (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2017). She blogs at afterachildssuicide.blogspot.com and lives in Altadena, California, with her husband, dog, and chickens.
PRAISE FOR In the Mourning Grove by Susan Auerbach
Susan Auerbach’s debut collection shows us a poet who has faced unthinkable loss yet manages to distill grief into stunning poems, making each line count. We witness the great sorrow that the dual suicides of son and father imprint but also see the love and joy in remembering their lives. These moving, complex poems teach us about heartbreak and resilience and guide us as we seek to understand the unfathomable: How do you go on from this? The work is unflinching and gorgeous, the read a full-body experience leaving us hungering for more.
—Carla Rachel Sameth, Co-Poet Laureate of Altadena, CA, 2023 Poet Laureate Fellow with the Academy of American Poets, & author of Secondary Inspections
In the Mourning Grove is both a memoir and a collection of elegies. Grieving the loss of her 21-year-old son to suicide, Susan Auerbach also revisits the losses of her youth. She crafts such vivid and visceral poems that a film director could easily recreate them. The breezy opening poem, “anytime miss wish,’’ so tangibly revisits moments with her son—on the couch watching Japanese films together, buying him his “favorite sopping lasts-all-day/ chicken burrito at Lucky Boy”—that the pivot that follows is like an elevator drop. Using rhythm and sound the way a painter uses color, Auerbach threads the book with recurring sensory memories. In “Vanishing Act,” she describes inhaling her son’s old T-shirts, “still thick with thrift-store musk,/ smoke, sweat. What is the half-life/ of a young man’s funk?” When some people bury a loved one after a suicide, they bury memories and mementos of their loved one’s life. This brave and loving book highlights how important it is to continue to celebrate and find solace in their lives.

Unraveling a Revolution
The book will be a big one. With a projected length of 142,000 words, it will be bigger even than River Rising and The Memory Tree, the weighty twin tomes that anchor the Carson Chronicles series.
I admit that gives me pause. Authors are strongly advised to limit their books, even historical fiction works, to 100,000 words.
I won't with this one though. Like many writers, I believe that if you have a story to tell, you should tell it. You should develop every major character and narrative thread until you can develop no more.
In The Patriots, my twenty-fourth novel, I will do just that. I will dive deep into the lives of Noah and Jake Maclean, two orphaned brothers who travel from the Philadelphia of 2024 to the one of 1776.
Like most boys, Noah, 22, and Jake, 15, will not be able to resist a dangerous temptation that calls to them from their own property. They will enter a mysterious stone shed and venture to the American Revolution, where they will meet Ben Franklin, John Adams, Peggy Shippen, and the lovely daughters of a furniture maker.
Unlike September Sky, River Rising, The Lane Betrayal, and The Fountain, the first books of my last four series, The Patriots will focus more on people than events. It will focus on the brothers; sisters Abigail (20) and Rachel (14) Ward; and Douglas Maclean, the boys' great-uncle and the patriarch of a Scottish clan that goes back centuries.
It will also lay the foundation for a trilogy that spans the length of the revolution, a conflict I am covering for the first time. It will set the stage for more action-oriented stories in books two and three.
Because of the book's length, I don't expect to finish the first draft before July. I do expect to have the finished product out by October 1.

a gratitude/follow forever post!
Seeing as it’s been a few, good months since I’ve created this Stiles blog, I wanted to take the time to admire some of my writing partners and followers. While I have yet to really reach a certain number of them, no real achievement for that, it’s not about how many people follow me but rather, the content you guys have given me and allowed me to write with you. So, since it’s nearing the end of the year, I wanted to love on everyone who has given me such joy writing Stiles and those of you who genuinely brighten my days. This post is going to be a loooong one, feel free to skip it if you like.
✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧
@lionheartedxvixen [+every single blog you have, girl]; Nelly, you are already aware of how much I love you since I love to be a cheeseball and just tell you from time to time. I’ve written plenty of those corny posts over the years on my personal blog, every single time we wrapped up another year and hit another milestone together. Your 13+ years of friendship has and always will be something I cherish, something I’ll honestly carry with me forever. And, I adore your portrayals of every character you’ve ever written! Every interaction we’ve ever had has always left me excited and wanting more (yeah, I’m greedy, sue me). From Brucas, to Brachel, Steroline, Steferine, Forbinski, Barlia and Stalia (plus the many other friendships, family, enemies, whatever!), I adore them all. You will always be my best friend and I’m always gonna wanna follow you to new places, give our muses new adventures and just love the hell out of you and your writing. Thank you for everything you do and have done for me. I truly believe you’re like one of my soul mates.
@kisscflife; Moira, even though we don’t interact too often, I love you and appreciate all your support and genuine love for me. Your support has been so important to me this last year, especially with my transitioning. I want you to know that I greatly appreciate it and I’m glad we get along so well now. I’m blessed to call you a sister, but you’re always also going to be a friend. You should also know that your writing is amazing and you’re far more talented than you believe. You put a lot of thought into your OCs, which I love about them all. And I love laughing at the crack ideas of our characters, even if we don’t always make threads for them or write them out. Just the actual thought of some of the things we’ve talked and laughed about makes my day, every time. Don’t be hard on yourself, you are loved.
@ofherblueeyes; Effy, my Stiles muse was half alive, half dead when you approached me about wanting to plot something and write together. My activity has now gone through the roof once more and I’m serious that you are partially to blame for this! I’m already having far too much fun with every thread we have made. They give me the feels, the joy, the sobs, the pain, the giggles, EVERYTHING. Thanks for reaching out and giving me the opportunity to write with you! Your Malia seriously makes me laugh and smile, and those damn painful posts make me wanna give her a hug. Or, rather, let Stiles (or even now Isaac) love on her! I look forward to more fun ideas, whether they’re on tumblr or discord, I don’t care. JUST GIVE ME EVERYTHING!
@literally-lydia; Kaliya, you were the first Lydia player who wanted to interact with Stiles on my mumu. While we haven’t written much lately, you are far too sweet for words and the time you spend writing out these replies really shows how much you love your muse. I enjoy reading your replies, though we haven’t done too much yet, you also make me smile in pms! Thank you for enjoying my Stiles and my writing, ‘cause I appreciate you and yours, too!
@kanima-claws; Jackson constantly either amuses or produces such feelings in me. Your writing and the amount of love you pour into him really shines, it just makes me miss the damn guy so much! Our thread hasn’t seen the light of day for a while (because I have been so bad at remembering and switched blogs and blah), but it is easily one of my favorites! Especially since Jackson ripped into Stiles about the Star Wars figures and pretty much thinks he’s the biggest loser known to mankind. ROFL I can’t wait to explore their dynamic more and just have all the funny things and hope they can learn to get along. I mean, they need to at some point. Thanks for being so sweet out of character as well, you are a geeeem in the rpc. I mean that!
@bansheeintuition; Stephanie, oh my word, you are beyond talented at what you do. Every reply you respond with honestly blows me away because of your writing style and your grasp on Lydia. Our zombie AU literally became my obsession for some time and I adored it so much! The descriptions, the dialogue, just everything was so vivid and beautiful that it really was brought to life! I know we haven’t interacted too much since but I am always down for plotting and writing together because I love your portrayal and blog to bits! You are also far too sweet out of character, and so considerate and friendly whenever we’ve chatted, be it through tumblr or discord. Thank you for loving on Stiles and allowing me to bring him to life with your Lydia. <3
@thewailer; Kate, UGH our thread and plot makes me stoked! I know it’s been slow going and you’re currently on hiatus, but just plotting it out and the overall feel of it and ideas for it are so great, I literally want to bask in all of it forever and a day. I love AUs and this idea is like, the AU of the century! Stydia investigating supernatural/paranormal things in the 1940s? Yessssss. Grabby hands! Gimmie! I love that you send in memes and answer them as well and just put so much effort into your portrayal and writing! Your muse gives me muse and gives me the creativity to want to write better. Plus, I love answering those memes and making little headcanons about Stydia (like the one where they blindfolded each other in the woods!). Thanks for being great out of character as well, and so patient with me when I had been away for a while. I look forward to you on my dash when you return and I hope life is treating you well!
@deadbrcther; Uggggh, your Isaac literally makes me MELT! Isaac is my absolute favorite next to Stiles and your writing really brings him to life. I know we haven’t written much together but I also admire him from afar and just enjoying being able to see him (and Noah) on my dash, whenever you’re around! Yes, I read their interactions at times, just to silently sob about how much Isaac deserved and didn’t get. I need more Stisaac in my life as well, and am always interested in them if you’d want to plot or work on something! :D
@ofnoblehunt / @haleontheprowl; Rachel, I honestly didn’t think I needed more Stallison in my life, or even Stora but, your writing and muses are too good and I would honestly love to do more together! Those memes and your replies, even though we literally barely started interacting together, really gave me some legit feels. You’re also fun to chat with ooc and while we haven’t lately, I hope you’re doing well! I look forward to writing more together in the future and will love on both girls for as long as I can. :3
@willsavethem; Meaghan, let me tell you something about Scott McCall and your portrayal of him: I. LOVE. YOU. Honestly, I get so excited whenever I see him on my dashboard and whenever you reply to just about anything possible. I would definitely love to pick up some more Sciles and am always up for working on something together. Just know that I creep on your posts and bask in them from afar because he is far too precious for this world and deserves all the good things.
@perfectioncursed; Beth, I haven’t even watched Riverdale yet, tbh, but Betty and Stiles give me liiiiife! -insert a sobbing face- While I know they’ve only had the few interactions, just their banter lifts me up and makes me want to explore their dynamic more. I wanted to appreciate you also as a writer, because I do peep on those posts when I see Betty on my dash. 👀 I love her and the fact that she would totally write a list about Stiles. (Plus, you know, that time he finally caved and let her look at his broken down Jeep? Yeah, that was greeeeat!) I look forward to more things, honestly. Feel free to throw anything at me, I’m game!
@oftroubledsouls; Just chatting about Sterek the other day honestly made me so happy. Like, I know we haven’t interacted yet as I just took that Derek starter but, ugh. I am looking forward to it! Like, I need that goodness in Stiles’ life and it’s just gonna be a good time, I feel it. I also love seeing your muses on my dash and read them whenever I can. :) Feel free to hop into pms at anytime, even if just to ramble with me about Sterek and how much chemistry they had, UNF.

Joseph’s Harvest in the Messianic Vision of Genesis
In Genesis 37:24, we are told that there was "no water in" the pit where Joseph was thrown. This must be taken in light of the whole story of Genesis.
God places Adam in the garden of Eden and instructs him to cultivate and shape the world into glory. The rivers which "divided" and flowed throughout the world marked out the various lands which the human family was to cultivate by the water of life and the Holy Spirit. (There is a great deal underlying this reading of Genesis 1-3, but it is too complex to repeat here.) The process of sprinkling the world with holiness, shaping it into new glorious, and consecrating them to God in thanksgiving is summed up in the process of producing tribute. One waters the world, brings up its grains (these are the plants which had not "sprouted" ears in Genesis 2:5), uses sword and fire (note flaming sword) to divide them and bake them into bread, consecrating that bread to God. In the symbolism of the Bible, this consecration, the tribute offering (which included wine when the land was inherited by Joshua) was the liturgical expression of the tithe, the offering to God of Israel's increase for the glorification of the temple. This process of moving outwards, developing the world, and moving inwards to rejoice in thanksgiving through tribute from that glorified world depended on the continued reality of the divine presence.
It is God who sustains all things in living existence. Man, as the image of God, is graciously shaped so that he is placed in the midst of the divine dynamism. God gives of Himself outwards in creation as He gathers things to Himself in perfection, and He does so according to the very same perfect activity. Man is created as the image of God so that God realizes His ongoing creative work through the co-operative participation of the human family. Man, brought into conjunction with the will of God, has true freedom in selecting among the many-varied goods which can be realized in any given place and time. With the creation brought to fuller glory by the free co-operation of man as instrument, the creation is brought to perfection as this very same human family brings to the Heavenly Father the Eucharist as a sign of thanksgiving for all those things which have been received and molded by man. This is why the tithe is specifically collected upon the basis of the consecrated Bread and Wine.
The water which springs up at the fountain of Mt. Eden's peak is the sign and expression of the dwelling of the divine presence with creation. But with the gates of Eden newly locked after the fall, this entire process, the very pattern of existence, has been interrupted. When Noah's family emerges upon the mountains of Ararat, there is no more Eden where the Presence dwells, locked or not. The creation burst forth to wash the world clean of man, and in the aftermath of the flood, hope seems to be drying out. Abraham is promised a land of milk and honey, yet the land keeps enduring famines. Instead of being full of plenty, Abraham has to go to Egypt and then Philistia to survive. Springs of water appear here and there- when God promises to remember Hagar, when God gives Isaac his wife, and when Isaac digs three wells in Gerar, driven out from two of them.
The patriarchs have gone through the land and made known the divine Name. Those who have heard of the coming judgment and are righteous are gathered to Abraham (this theme of patriarchal evangelization is in the text and is argued by scholars like Cassuto, following the traditional Jewish and Christian view). But it is a remnant, and the leaders of the remnant are not awe-inspiring. Abraham becomes impatient and seeks to realize the divine promise too early through Hagar, creating more conflict in the human family. Isaac obstinately favors the son whom God has not made heir, creating such domestic hatred that Jacob must run for his life. Laban treats his own flesh and bone like a slave. And Jacob, having learned nothing from the story of his grandfather, marries two additional wives because of impatience (the case of Rachel and Leah is a unique case, as Jacob is legally married to one and conjugally bound to the other, essentially binding his hands) and creating bitter family rivalries because of it.
By Genesis 34, (which is placed before Genesis 37 despite postdating it chronologically), things have gotten so bad that the children of Jacob have become known for their doing exactly the opposite of what God had commanded. As they prepared to circumcise a tribe of Canaanites and bring them under the covenant, Simeon and Levi use the offer of divine blessing to enact their own project of personal vengeance, so that Jacob's ability to make God known to the Canaanites is destroyed: "you have made me a stench" in the noses of the people, says Jacob. The whole project of the human family and the glorification of creation depended on having the divine presence bubbling up within the world for the sanctification and beautification of all things, but the world is drying up for good as night appears to fall.
This is the setting in which we find Joseph cast in a pit with "no water." The pit may be deep, but it is just as dry as if one was in the Sahara Desert. Joseph's is disrobed from his glory and placed under the earth, in the dry pit of death where there is no water.
It is when Joseph is placed under the earth in its dryness that fertility is restored to the world. Whereas Jacob had been a stench in the nose of the Gentiles, Joseph went to Egypt in a caravan of incense. God placed the Spirit of God in the nose of Adam so that Adam would bring forth the world's harvest (again, an argument I have made elsewhere, but note the double need for water and man in Genesis 2:5 and the purpose of filling that need) to God. After the fall, the curse is to bring forth "bread" by a different water- the sweat of painful labor, literally, "the sweat of your nose." The Spirit was given to Adam's nose so that he would be an instrument of breathing life throughout the world, but since the fall, the hard labor gradually drains the life out of Adam- signified in the sweat (water=life) leaving his nose. Joseph is a sweet savor in the nose of the Egyptians, and Pharaoh tells us why: in Joseph dwells the "Spirit of God" is in him (41:38).
Joseph descends down into the earth where no water is left. When he emerges and travels to Egypt with incense, the night that seemed to be falling on the creation and divine project is turned into morning. The Spirit of God is in Joseph, and the Spirit of God (note connections with spring rising upwards in Genesis 2:5 and the Spirit's hovering in 1:2- this is part of a broader recap of the creation days in the narratives of Genesis 2-3) by wisdom waters the world anew. The remnant had been pulled through the patriarchal period unto the point when it could flower forth to encompass the whole human family, not just a remnant. By the end of the book, Joseph rules from Goshen, a place said to be "like the garden" of Eden (Genesis 13:10). He is an exalted Adam, lawfully distinguishing good and evil:"you meant it for evil, but God meant it for good." He was rejected by his brothers only to illumine the nations and be sought by his brothers in the end all the same. The turning point in the symbolic history of the cosmos unfolded here in Genesis is when Joseph was disrobed from his glory and cast into a pit of the earth. His ascent from that pit signified the resurrection from the grave (as is further confirmed by the emphasis put on the bringing **UP** of his bones (meaning "self") to the land of inheritance and the opening up of new springs in what had been desert.
The figure of Joseph is the climactic figure of the book of Genesis. The whole story of creation is told in miniature throughout the book. The election and story of Israel from Abraham to the coming of Jesus is told in the narratives of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Throughout that period a slice of the human family is taken as witness to the Gentiles and carefully worked and preserved as a sanctified remnant. The betrayal of Joseph by his brothers and placing him in the pit corresponds to the crucifixion of Jesus who then ascended to rule the nations: a process which was not all in one direction, but had setbacks and major steps forward. When "all the earth" came to Joseph to buy grain, Joseph's brothers come and are reconciled to him with tears. With the nations and the family of Jacob all dwelling in security, Joseph continues to wisely manage the affairs of Egypt for the rest of his life (and the majority of his life is taken up by this happy peace) before passing into the earth. Jesus is crucified, raised, works to heal the nations and then bring His brothers according to the flesh back to Him before the resurrection of the dead. That is the whole story of creation.
As John Sailhamer pointed out, the language of Joseph's dreams is appropriated in the prophetic blessing of Jacob in Genesis 49:8-12 to apply to the seed from the line of Judah. Joseph was the head tribe of the north, Judah of the south. With Judah's repentance, the messianic line came through him, and with the link created between the figure of Joseph and the messianic king from Judah's family, one has even more reason to read Joseph's story as leading to Jesus' story. It is not that these two stories, by chance, happen to correspond so well that Christians have called it a type. Instead, in the internal arrangement of the Book of Genesis and in the intertextual threading of the prophetic language running through the Torah and prophets, the Tanach itself demands that we look for correspondences between the claimed Messiah and the life of Joseph. That they present themselves so readily in the case of Jesus is surely suggestive.

okay because i didn’t manage to get through my last starter call i’m putting up another one. this one is capped for the sake of my sanity but characters who could use a few more threads are at 6 instead of 4, which is a few of them, but i’d really love to get some new threads going with all my characters. i promise i’ll be writing all of these but just know i may not start until tomorrow so i can focus on drafts, but even if it takes a little time your starter will definitely be coming!

Samplers with variations on a book rhyme (“When this you see...”):
Jean Farish’s faithful reproduction of the antique sampler originally stitched by Roxana Corson c. 1826. [x]
Detail of the classic sampler verse.
Sarah Hook. From “The Exhumeplary Collection” by Plum Street Samplers. [x]
Needlework Sampler, Rebekah Nickerson, Provincetown, Massachusetts, late 18th/early 19th century, wrought with silk threads on a linen ground, stitched with an alphabet and the verses: "Rebekah Nickerson is my name/English is my Nation/Provincetown is my Dwelling Place/and Christ is My Salvation. When I am Dead and in My Grave and All My Bones Are Rotten/When This You See Remember Me/Let Me Not be Forgotten/This Work Throughout My Needle Wrought," (toning, minor stains), 9 1/2 x 10 in. [x]
The Houses at Hawk Run Hollow, designed by Carriage House Samplings [x]
Detail of the verse. [x]
Needlework sampler, Maria Holness, 1800. [x]
Needlework sampler, Hannah Goodard, Brookline, MA dated 1773. Hannah at age 14 went through a lot of trouble to make sure we would still be talking about her. This rare solidly stitched black background sampler is inscribed: (Top right) In the Year 1773 - (The verse) Hannah Goddard is my name New England is My Nation Brookline is my Dwelling Place And Christ Is My Salvation When I Am Dead And Laid In Grave And All My Bones Are Rotten When This You See Remember Me And Never Let Me Be Forgotten. Hannah (1759-1786) was the third of fifteen children born to John Goddard (1730-1816), a prosperous farmer and his second wife, Hannah Seaver (1735-1812). She died unmarried. [x]
Needlework sampler, Charity Trimble, 1807. [x] This sampler was pictured and described in Sue Studebaker's book, Ohio is My Dwelling Place, and is from the Collection of Emilie B. Savage. It features bands of decoration that include a verse and a potted flower with "Charity Trimble Was Born In The Year 1789 This Done...1807". Below are unusual depictions of women with parasols, flower pots and Noah's ark to one side complete with dove. The last band has a brick building that is believed to be the first Ohio Capitol Building, built in Chillicothe in Ross County, Ohio. According to Studebaker's book, Charity was born in Virginia to John Trimble and Rachel Ridgeway and around 1804 her family moved to Ross County. At that time in Chillicothe there was a school run by John Hutt and his wife where Charity may have worked this sampler. Later Charity married James McClintock in 1811 and died in 1868.
Detail of the verse.
