Hi! Sorry to be the guy who is fun at parties! But upon seeing this post I realized/thought something 'wait, flags kind of originated with european kingdoms, no?', so I decided to fact check my assumption.
A brief history of flags: No one really knows where flags came from, though flag-like symbols have been described in civilizations such as 11th century B.Ce. China, and ancient Egypt and Rome¹.
And I realized some of these flags look, well, very Contemporary². And I understand indigenous people's aren't a thing of the past! There are thriving communities. So please, don't take this as me saying those flags aren't 'authentic' or whatever that might mean, I just wanted to see more about them, their origins, and whether or not people from those communities recognize them as Symbols representing them!
For example, the Anishinaabeg people, pre-colonization, used pictographs, and also the thunderbird is considered important to their creation mythos, so the thunderbird is often regarded a symbol for the Anishinaabeg. This post is already going to be pretty long- So I won't summarize the history of different symbols for these different indigenous groups, but I'll try my best to summarize the origin of these flags.
--
Māori: That is the Tino Rangatiratanga Flag of the Maori sovereignty movement. Recognised as the national Maori flag of Aotearoa by the NZ Cabinet in 2009. (Source.) Flag was designed "Sometime in 1980". Older than me! (Source.)
Kalaallit Nunaat: Also the flag of Greenland. It was adopted in 1985 and designed by Thue Christiansen. (Source.) Haudenosaunee: Also called the "flag of the Iroquois Confederacy". Designed by Rick Hill, a Tuscarora artist, along with Harold and Tim Johnson, father and son, who are Mohawk. Designed in 1980 for a lacrosse team. (Source.) (Fun fact: The Māori flag was also used by a sports team! The New Zealand Māori rugby league team.) Nunatsiavut: Became an official symbol in 2005. The colors are purposefully reminescent of the Labrador flag. (Source.) I actually cannot find any information on who designed the flag. Though this website has a lot of information on other first nation's flags. Australian Aboriginal: This flag actually inspired the Māori flag. Designed by Harold Thomas, a Luritja man, in 1970. (Source.) In 1995 it was recognized as an official flag of australia. January 2022, the Commonwealth of Australia acquired the copyright of the Aboriginal Flag. This makes me beyond mad. Although I cannot do much except for spread this information. More information about the copyright holders in the previous link. Harold Thomas was also a member of the Stolen Generations. Torres Strait Islands: Flag was designed by Bernard Namok, who passed away in 1993. (Source.) It was adopted in 1992. It was the the winning entry in a competition run by the Island Coordinating Council. The flag was legally recognized in 1995. (Source.)
Rapa Nui: Also called the Te Reva Reimiro. It was created in 1880. (For reference, the 50-Star US flag was adopted circa 1959.) Although its design has changed over the years. (Source.) (Source.)³
Kurdistan: Flag adopted around 1927. (Source.)⁴ Created by the Society for the Rise of Kurdistan in 1920. This one has lots and lots of variants. And is also adopted by different states. Sami: The first Sámi flag was designed by Sámi Politician Marit Stueng in 1962. The design was used locally in Kárašjohka. The first time a Sámi flag was officialy recognized was in 1986. (Source.) Ainu: Designed by Bikki Sunazawa in 1973 and was flown in the same year. (Source.) It is rarely seen at Ainu gatherings. In 2020, Bikki's son Jin Sunazawa claimed copyright ownership and requested disuse of the flag. (Source.) Mapuche: Also called the Wenufoye. 500 designs for it were presented in 1991. It was based on the Nagche regional flag. (Source.) A supposed flag/symbol/emblem was described in a 1569 poem!!! (La Araucana) And there is also the Guñelve, also called the Star of Arauco, it represents venus, but has been mistaken for the flower Drimys winteri, as it is also sacred to the Mapuche people. (Source.) Guaraní: Actually the flag for the Weenhayek, Tapiete and Guaraní people. It is the official flag for the Guaraní Charagua Iyambae autonomous territory. (Source.) (SVG on Wikipedia) The designers are sourced as the 'authorities of the National Assembly of the Guaraní People', it seems to have been designed sometime in 2015, and adopted in the same year, depending on what authority we are considering. There are many Guaraní flags! (Example 1) (Example 2)⁵ Comechingones: The flag is depicted as having the Cruz del Sur on the black, left side of the flag Here. There is also this more specific Comechingones flag listed on the same blog. A defunct link lists Silvio Alfredo Fernández as the designer. The flag linked in this post does not seem to be used in any wikipedia article, and I cannot find it used anywhere else with a reverse image search. (I'd suggest using the one with the Cruz del Sur on the other half?) Tehuelche: There are multiple Tehuelche flags! The one in the post is the Mapuche-Tehuelche flag (Source), officialy recognized in 1991. (Source 1.) (Source 2.) One of the Tehuelche flags is entirely white! There is also the Bandera del Pueblo Tehuelche de Santa Cruz. (Video about it here!)
Some more indigenous south-american peoples' flags Here, here, here, and here. (Sorry for not delving into these- We are running on a budget!)
And last, but not least:
Congo:
It was adopted in 2006. Though a similar flag was flown from 1966 until 1971. (Source.) Couldn't find the designer's name.
Palestine:
Used since 1920. It uses the pan-Arab colors. Israel outlawed it. (Source.) Couldn't find the designer's name. And as far as I know, since it was designed during the 1936 Arab Revolt, it's possible the designer will never be known.
Sorry for the long post. I just hope someone out there learned something new today, and I believe learning about indigenous peoples' cultures is important. Their history has been erased time and time again, I felt I should do my part to spread this information. Homework! (Or, things I'd recommend you research if you liked this post!): Looking into the meaning of certain symbols in these flags! Flags are all about semiotics! For example, the Comechingones' flags' stars represent the Cruz del Sur, it's a constelation that can only be seen in the southern hemisphere, and much like the North Star, it can be used to determine where the south is!

As we may know, as the computer got more popular, many flags got digitalized and standardized, and a lot of governments have specific instructions on how to construct a flag, this is mostly a gut-feel, as I am not immune to bias. I'll admit that it was the Guarani flag that set off this instinct— As it has intricate patterns that are hard to sew and pastel-ish colors, which made me speculate about it being digital in origin.
3. The only wikipedia source is paywalled, and I am broke. Although I have trust in the people. So, if anyone wants to check it out for themselves: Cornejo, Cristobal; Salinas, Julio Hotu (6 September 2011). "Campaña promueve uso de banderas de pueblos originarios: Sepa qué significan". 4. I do not speak Kurmanji, so once again, I trust the people. As per usual, it is what wikipedia cites- I am sorry if my research sounds lazy, I'm just trying to be as quick and as concise as possible. If I wanted to go into deep dives into each of these flags, I would try to track down more sources, though this post is very- Very long. If you do have any corrections feel free to do so in reblogs, I won't take any offense. Veroj, Sêid (17 December 2021). 5. Lists a now defunct website. :( It saddens me how I could not find a designer for many of these flags.
My deepest apologies for not posting every one of these link's information for redundancy- I understand that if these sites get wiped this information is lost, and I am not an archivist, and this post is long enough as is. If you want to do your part— Of course, if you have the time and energy, you could archive any of these in the waybackmachine. I'm sure it would be appreciated, and as long as you message me I can append the waybackmachine links in my post. Thank you for your attention, have an amazing day.
Seeing a lot of posts about the Palestinian flag, and it got me thinking about indigenous flags around the world.

Spooky Business - S.E. Harmon (The Spectral Files, book 3)
Synopsis
Being insatiably curious is a good way to end up dead.
Rain Christiansen, cold case detective and reluctant medium, is very aware of that fact. But when infamous serial killer Thomas Kane wants to meet, there’s no way Rain can say no. He also can’t refuse Kane’s offer—find his missing wife, Delilah, and he’ll reveal the location of his victim’s bodies.
Rain has never turned down a good quid pro quo, and he doesn’t intend to start.
The hunt for Kane’s wife leads to yet another cold case, three copycat murders, and an investigation where nothing is as it seems. Soon, Rain is dealing with a ghost unlike any he’s ever dealt with before…a ghost capable of doing things he shouldn’t be able to do. How can Rain control something he doesn’t even understand? And what will he do when the unknown threatens the safety of the most important person in his life?
Rain is starting to realize that he can only battle the supernatural with the supernatural, and that is spooky business indeed.
My Thoughts
As with most series, especially mystery series, things tend to ramp up the further into the series you get. And that’s certainly true in this case. Spooky Business went to some very dark, very strange places with Rain right at the heart of it all.
Rain’s trying to understand, manage, and even control his abilities more and more. But that’s not always how things work with him. And while his job is often very physically dangerous – even if some of the situations he finds himself in are downright hilarious – he’s also finding that the spiritual dangers can take their own toll, too.
It doesn’t take much for shit to hit the fan, especially when a known serial killer seems to be pulling all the strings. But as always, Rain is determined to find answers, and get to the bottom of things – even if that involves tying a lot of convoluted strings together the more he uncovers. As always, Rain has support in Danny through it all.
Rain and Danny are still going strong, even learning to communicate better, which I appreciate wholeheartedly. It’s not easy – their jobs are demanding, and oftentimes harrowing. But they support each other, and they work through challenges together. And they were certainly hit with a couple of major challenges this time around.
This series is going down as one of my favourites. I love these characters, and I love this setting. And I love watching Rain grow into his abilities, accept them, and learn how to utilize them to their fullest potential. And watching Rain and Danny build their future together brings me nothing but major joy.

USMNT "sticking to the plan" ahead of latest Panama showdown
The U.S. men’s national team’s second Copa America group stage match will certainly be tougher than the first, especially with a CONCACAF rival opposing them at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday. Panama awaits the USMNT in Atlanta, Georgia in the first head-to-head matchup since July 2023. Thomas Christiansen’s squad eliminated the Americans from the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals last summer,…

WOLF PACK FALL 4-3 TO MONSTERS IN SHOOTOUT
By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf PackHARTFORD, CT – The Hartford Wolf Pack rallied back from a three-goal deficit on Thursday night at the XL Center to earn a point against the Cleveland Monsters. Despite their best efforts, however, the rally came up just short as Hunter McKown scored the winner in the bottom half of the fifth round to give the Monsters a 4-3 shootout victory.McKown waited out Wolf Pack goaltender Louis Domingue before tucking in the deciding tally. Trey Fix-Wolansky also scored in the shootout, while Brett Berard had Hartford’s lone marker in the skills competition. The Monsters needed only 16 seconds on their second powerplay attempt to open the scoring on this night. Brendan Gaunce tipped a point shot from Marcus Björk past Domingue to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead at 4:37 of the opening frame. The goal was Cleveland’s third powerplay marker against the Wolf Pack this season. The Wolf Pack went on the kill for a third time at 8:10, giving the Monsters a chance to extend their lead. The Monsters’ leading scorer among defensemen, Jake Christiansen, buried a shot from the high slot to make it 2-0 just 33 seconds into the advantage. Christiansen’s initial bid rang off the post before finding its way back to his stick, where he made his second try count at 8:43.The Pack brought good energy following the Christiansen tally, testing Jet Greaves on numerous occasions to try and cut into the deficit heading into the intermission. Greaves, however, made eight saves in the opening frame to keep it 2-0 for the visitors.Monsters forward Jake Gaudet went off for boarding 4:41 into the middle stanza, giving the Wolf Pack their first crack at the man advantage.During a desperation play to keep the puck in the zone, Roman Ahcan snuck behind the Wolf Pack defense and was sprung in on a shorthanded breakaway by Tyler Angle. Ahcan waited out Domingue and tucked the puck by his pad to make it 3-0 Monsters at 5:21.The Wolf Pack responded swiftly, connecting on the powerplay as Jake Leschyshyn fed Tyler Pitlick in the slot. Pitlick roofed his first goal as a member of the Wolf Pack to make it 3-1 at 6:05. Berard notched an assist on the powerplay tally as well, which came 44 seconds after Ahcan’s shorthanded marker.Midway through the third period, the Wolf Pack found themselves shorthanded yet again at 8:39. This time around, it was Hartford returning the favor with a shorthanded goal of their own.Berard broke free on a breakaway after the Monsters failed to keep the puck in the zone, busting down the right wall before beating Greaves short-side to make it a 3-2 game. Berard’s tally was his team-leading 17th and his second shorthanded.Samuel Knazko went off for delay of game late in the third period, giving the Wolf Pack a chance at some late-game heroics. With the goalie pulled, Nikolas Brouillard hit an open Ryder Korczak with a cross-ice pass. Korczak ripped home his sixth goal of the season to tie the game 3-3 at 17:48. Pitlick notched his second point of the night (1 g, 1 a) on the play.A back-and-forth overtime saw numerous chances to win it from both ends, but 65 minutes would not be enough. For just the third time this season, the Wolf Pack were pushed to a shootout.Despite Berard opening the shootout with a goal, Fix-Wolansky would tie it in the bottom half of the first round before McKown provided the winner in the bottom half of the fifth round. Greaves denied the final four Wolf Pack shooters to claim his first victory against Hartford.Despite the loss, the Wolf Pack finished the season series with six of a possible eight points against the Monsters (2-0-1-1).The Pack finishes off their six-game-in-eight-day stretch tomorrow night when they visit the Springfield Thunderbirds. The puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.The Pack is back at the XL Center on Wednesday, February 28th, at 7:00 p.m. when the Charlotte Checkers come to town.Tickets are available at hartfordwolfpack.com.About OVG360: OVG360, a division of Oak View Group, is a full-service venue management and hospitality company that helps client-partners reimagine the sports, live entertainment, and convention industries for the betterment of the venue, employees, artists, athletes, and surrounding communities.
