I am disappointed in Weezer that they have yet to do a Christmas release titled "Say it Ain't Snow."
Just redoing "Say it Ain't So" with added jingle bells would be enough.
You are old men who do themed cruises now. You are not above this.
Apparently someone did a Game of Thrones-themed parody called "Say it Ain't Snow" back in 2015. But all I can find is a Reddit post of the time, referencing a music magazine article about it of the time. And both that magazine article and the song itself are lost to the ages.
...I mean probably for the better. Let's be honest here.
I'm still upset I can't find these things to make fun of them.
Preserving Internet history is important, kids. How much lame Game of Thrones parody media have we lost?
Tumblr media
Here is a rap by that title. It was uploaded 12 years ago, by Thizzler on the Roof, a channel run by company that promotes Bay Area rappers, that has uploaded over 22k videos (!). Most of their videos have 2000 views. One has 10 million.
The dedication to whatever this is is impressive, at least. And the music is pretty good, at any rate.

Young Slo-Be — Slo-Be Bryant 3 (KoldGreedy Enternainment \ Thizzler on the Roof)
Tumblr media
youtube
After a string of short tapes Young Slo-Be comes back with a behemoth of an album, the third part in his Slo-Be Bryant series. Fifty minutes of “killer music” (as he describes it) would be enough for two shorter releases. Do we need so much murder on wax?
Slo-Be Bryant 2 and Red Mamba put this Stockton, California artist on the radar, but major labels and commercial music media continue to ignore Young Slo-Be and his Stockton, CA scene. The reason for this taboo is quite simple: “no deals where they gettin' slain over music,” as the late Bay Area rapper Jacka put it. Young Slo-Be deals with all types of violence in his songs, and even when he is trying to relax, the danger looms over him. He’s a poet of one theme, and that already poses a challenge: can he pull through 50 minutes of music by himself, focusing solely on his violence-centered world?
The tape can be divided into three parts: a very strong beginning, a sagging middle, and a punchy second half where he gets a second wind. The failures in the middle come when he ventures into new territory, using Auto-Tune or spinning a love story (not very convincing as on the rest of the album he has nothing but disdain for women, especially “low character” ones). But when Young Slo-Be is on familiar ground, nobody can top him. Hundreds of hip hop artists do this type of rap, yet nobody sounds as crisp and scary as Slo-Be. On tracks like “Southeast Demons”, “Make It Home” and “Unforgivable,” he half-whispers over quiet beats, as if he records in the middle of the night in the darkest alley, this minute at the mic, the next ready for an ambush. He’s never hysterical, always matter-of-factly calm and threatening in an odd way. The sometimes needed refreshment is brought guests including AO Meally, Mac J, EBKTrey B and EBK Jaaybo. AiritOut JuJu, loud and artless, delivers the most reckless lines: “We won’t leave the scene until blood stains and yellow tapes.” By comparison, Young Slo-Be seems like a ghetto artisan, honing his every line. His superb skills at making a stellar hook can be found on, for example, “Overtime” where he uses homonymic rhymes: “If she ain’t mine I ain’t got time/ Free the thugs, you know they got time.”
A large part of Young Slo-Be’s success is built on his selection of beats. Among rap fans, Westside Gunn is considered the beat connoisseur, but Slo-Be can be even better. For his previous album Red Mamba he recruited Michigan-based rising star Sav, but on the new tape he manages with mostly local producers. Legend as a sort of in-house beatmaker stands out among them. The beats alone, especially from the first part of the tape, can make you crawl under the sheets. And that’s a compliment.

Mac J — Tricky Situation (TrueStory / Thizzler on the Roof)
Tumblr media
youtube
For two years, Mac J has been putting out a string of singles but no tapes. His last was a collaboration with Bris (Big Headed in 2019), and another one was in the works when Bris was killed. Perhaps, Bris’ death added a sense of futility to Mac J’s general mood: why bother to put together a long play when your new song can be your last one?
The existing singles were enough to fill two or three first-rate CDs, yet surprisingly none of them made the new EP Tricky Situation. On “Is Tricky” Mac J explains why he still feels the drive to create music: “I do this shit for Bris, I can’t let up.” But even when he doesn’t mention his friend and partner’s name, Bris’ presence looms over every track. More often Mac J refuses to mourn silently, like on “Gotta Grudge” when he states his feelings openly: “I can’t let it go/ I gotta grudge/ You know they killed my bro/ I gotta buss.”
Despite the obvious charges of anesthetization of violence, Mac J’s songs can’t be easily labeled as vengeance chants. Mortality is a thing we all know or come to know, and the Sacramento rapper has to deal in his lyrics with the immediate reality which itself violently seeps into his music. He’s a master of language, always playing with street lingo. His favorite method is the defamiliarization effect. He reaches for some street slang and puts it into different context, thus creating a surprising effect. By now stale street jargon takes on a new meaning (or rather helps to understand where it comes from). On “Lil Bit” it’s “I think I'm outta shape cause I stretch marks.” On “Gotta Grudge” it’s “I know alphabet / You ain’t no G.”
Mac J has been playing with the song structure on his singles, now and again discarding the classical verse-chorus-verse scheme. Versatile with both hooks and verses, he could drop a hook and make a hard song with two or three verses only. This approach was a creative reproach to pop rappers who are so hooked on a hook (to use a pun), they forget to write a verse. On Tricky Situation the Sacramento rapper returns to verse-chorus-verse structure, showing no sign that he lost his talent for catchy hook. Nor for good punchlines: “I squeeze in this bitch til it’s no crowd / Like they are out of episodes, it’s a showdown.”
The title Tricky Situation acquires two meanings here. It is not only that Mac J’s position in the streets is unsure. His career path is quite tricky, as he’s squeezed between two approaches to lyrics, with a hook (more poppish) or with no hook (more street). It encapsulates one of the problems of current rap. Hopefully, Mac J will find a way out. He’s good at it.

Best of 2022
Tumblr media
Here it is: my yearly summation of the small labels working through rising costs and punishing manufacturing delays, the artists making music unafraid of chance, and the freaks supporting all of it in spite of the daily consequences of a ruling class increasingly detached from reality. Lots more that deserve accolades from more prestigious publications, and I'm sure they'll get 'em, but these are records that were inseparable from certain points of my year, including now. Yeah, they were all kinda my favorite at one point, and could be again tomorrow, but Kilynn Lunsford is #1 for a reason. Glad to be back at shows, however sparingly, experiencing all the awkward camaraderie and room-silencing/room-flattening performances that come with them. It all feels more necessary than ever. Up and up in a world of lava. Happy New Year, everyone.
