Yellodschäckets german dub 1x08 through 1x10 notes!
- my immersion in the resurrection of van palmer was unfortunately broken when Van said "echt jetzt? verbrennen?" the way Otto Waalkes said all his sid lines in ice age
- every now and then they just have one of the characters say fuck you, in English, in the middle of the German dialogue and I really don't get why
- "you're full of shit" -> "dir hat doch einer ins Gehirn geschissen" die wunderschöne deutsche Sprache <3
- in the conversation present tai and shauna have about feeling "it", that is translated as "etwas", and I feel like they will use another word for "it" in the sense of the wilderness, and separating the two makes more sense honestly
- teen shauna killing adam will never not gag me
- "Ich hab ihn niedergestochen und jetzt ist er tot, ja :/" adult shauna i love you forever. this line is funnier than "what, there's no book club??" and you can't change my mind
- that said, the voice actor for jeff actually makes that line funnier, great job there!
- jackie flirting with travis is somehow even more cursed and kind of sweet at the same time
- don't have a word like reunion so sadly we did not translate "worddefinition.net"
- "I don't even know who you are anymore" is translated using plural you, which makes sense but takes some of the personal punch out of "or maybe you never did"
- in the death dream, shauna says "ich liebe dich" to jackie, not "ich hab dich lieb" like she did in episode 1. this is a big deal! this is kind of a shared dream, right. and shauna being so much more touchy than she's been in several episodes then saying the I love you with the romantic connotation... you don't even have to read between the lines anymore
- want to give huge props to Vivien Gilbert, the german voice actress for teen shauna, for this episode in particular. yeowch
- for reasons that I cannot even begin to imagine, they used the original audio of Courtney Eaton saying "versez le sang, mes beaux amis" and then made the most obvious distracting cut to the german voice actress and it sadly ruined the cliffhanger for me
this is fun! if a little confusing at times. I'll be back with season 2 at some point :)
#yellowjackets#yellowjacken#and with that death dream the day has finally come that i tag this thing#jackieshauna#nothing could have prepared me for the way the german dub elevates the romantic desire between them into text#years before season three did hehe#for the record i started writing this post a couple weeks back. i watched 8 and part of 9 before the release of season 3 and the rest after#so my observations most likely are coloured by that#but saying ich liebe dich to a friend always#always#always has romantic implications. and i have no way of knowing if this was intended by the translators but theres no doubt in my mind that#they were aware of what they were saying. and it also adds another layer to the eerieness of the whole scene#shauna finally saying out loud what has been lingering between them for all this time#and theres that brief hope that things could turn out alright#and then everybody repeats shaunas words in unison#givung them a completely different meaning#im obsessed with it

Woe, 1839 German bible uncovered in family attic be upon ye!
included: names/birthdays from 1892-1985, a pressed flower, a printed condolence card (1913)
not included: several locks of hair, a handmade condolence card (march 1842), 5 deitsch marriage certificates (1851-1935) lots of notes written in deitsch, and the chemise it was wrapped in

#anyways we found all this clearing out my great-great aunt’s house after her passing 6 years ago#There was a photo album too!! I think the earliest one was dated 1871 but don’t quote me on it#I might post photos of it next time I visit my hometown because it’s gorgeous#the benefit of your family never leaving 1 very small county is that there ends up being a lot of history#also it’s really fascinating because my family spoke deitsch in the home up through the forties so a lot of the notes#Written in are minor translations (deitsch is linguistically distinct but Very similar to german)#All of my great-relatives (and the handful of great-greats that I met) could/can still speak a little#Unfortunately WW1/WW2 meant that deitsch pretty much died out everywhere except Amish/mennonite communities#My grandparents still know a couple words but haven’t really spoken it since they were kids#HOWEVER I have learned that some of my/my family’s weird grammar (which I discovered was weird very late in life) is a holdover from deitsc#This has been your obscure linguistics infodump of the day thanks for listening#Whispers from the ally

do you ever think about university!satoru who keeps checking out new books every week as an excuse to talk to the cute front desk employee?
he makes a bet one day with suguru that he can get a date with you faster than suguru can get a date with the rec center attendant. quantity over quality interactions would win him the bet, so he makes it his mission to simply see you as much as possible. but he can't hold up the line, right? so instead of leaning over the desk and chatting you up with a charming smile, he checks out new books every week just to see you and show his face, snagging little pieces of information about you as time goes on. he searches up corny jokes and puns to make you smile while you're scanning his school id, and he lives for the times he makes you laugh even in the brief interactions he has to plan out in his head (to not waste any time, obviously).
you start to ask him about himself, like if he also worked, if he was taking any difficult classes, and finally his major...to which his response is bioengineering. your eyes widen and you blink a few times, like he'd said something incorrect.
is something wrong?
not at all, you chuckle. i just thought your major would be undeclared considering the variety of stuff you check out.
variety? his eyebrows furrow and you turn the laptop monitor so that he can read what he'd been checking out for the past few weeks. he gapes dumbly at the screen, completely unaware that he'd left such an incriminatingly stupid paper trail. the truth was, he'd just been grabbing a book off a random shelf and checking it out, not bothering to see what it was. so, he could imagine your surprise when he checks out in succession:
a summary of the most important technological advancements during the qing dynasty,
a comprehensive guide to teaching physics (in german, of all things),
a periodical compilation of women's fashion from 1983,
and a bilingual translation of the communist manifesto.
i have...interesting taste? you burst out laughing harder than he'd ever made you laugh before and cover your face with your hands. what's so funny?
nothing, nothing, you insist. it's just, if you wanted my number, you could've just asked, you know?
would you have given it to me?
maybe, if you came in with a good book report the next week. you shrug innocently before handing him his newest loan: the financial workings of central american countries. before he can respond, you wave over the next student and he's shelved until next week.
when he approaches you again, he's holding his item with less bravado than previous weeks. your smile is teasing and he barely says a word, only placing the item gently on the front desk. he sheepishly slides over the book and you notice the post-it with his phone number on it before you notice the title.
"flirting for dummies."

Looking for French, German, And Dutch speaking individuals to assist with research & translation
My ongoing research into the history of hairless cats has led me to some sources that i either cannot read or cannot even locate because i don’t speak the language. I’m posting them all here in the hopes that the people of tumblr may be able to help locate them for me!
French sources:
I need people to locate the full text of the following academic articles
Dutch sources:
I need ANY dutch language publications mentioning Dr Hugo Hernandez’s breeding program which began in 1980. newspaper archives. magazines. books. i would cry if you found archival news footage. he was VERY IMPORTANT and yet I can find almost nothing on him in english.
German sources:
I need someone who can locate and translate the specific passage pertaining to the “paraguay scant haired cat” in Naturgeschichte der Saeugethiere von Paraguay (Natural History of the Mammals of Paraguay) by J.R. Rengger
Secondary english sources report that Rengger observed a population of “scant haired cats” and suggested that they were the descendants of european house cats that had adapted to the hotter climate. The text has not been translated into english and I want to know exactly what it says.
#hopefully this research will contribute to a future documentary#i will gladly credit anyone who finds helpful information!

moose and meese
spencer discovers plural nouns aren't nearly as complicated as your choice in swimwear
pairing: spencer reid x translator!reader warnings: fem!reader, post prison spencer, hot tubbing, probably some shitty translations bc i am not a translator like reader and i used google, spencer staring at readers boobies prompt: here wc: 0.9k
Spencer considers himself relatively immune to manipulation, persuasion, coercion — any of those techniques really, especially when wielded by attractive, intellectually formidable women. But somehow, you slip right past his carefully constructed defenses like they’re made of tissue paper instead of reinforced steel.
He briefly entertains the notion of filing some sort of official complaint regarding your swimwear, which, frankly, seems less like actual clothing and more like strategic warfare targeting his respiratory and cardiovascular functions.
As if the torment of sharing a room with you wasn’t already sufficient punishment — being forced to listen as you disappeared behind the bathroom door, imagination betraying him with merciless clarity at the sound of the shower and clothes hitting tile — now he had to contend with a hot tub.
A hot tub conveniently wedged between your room and Morgan’s room, effectively annihilating any chance at privacy.
Not that Spencer actively craves privacy with you.
He absolutely doesn’t.
At least, that’s his official story.
“Hey Spencer,” you murmur, adjusting your bikini strap in a movement that’s entirely unnecessary, “I know my face isn’t that boring, so unless there’s a math equation on my chest, your eyes might wanna wander north.”
Spencer meets your gaze with a flat, unimpressed expression, internally kicking himself because, really, when did he become that guy?
He genuinely hadn’t meant to stare — it was just that your chest was conveniently located directly in his line of sight. Prominently. Unavoidably.
Now he’s officially a douche, at least according to the voice in his head, which sounds disturbingly like Morgan.
“Oh, I wasn’t —” Spencer falters briefly, warmth prickling at his ears. He clears his throat. “But to be fair, what you’re wearing isn’t exactly designed to promote eye contact.”
You laugh softly, sinking deeper into the bubbles.
“Cheeky observation, Dr. Reid.” You laugh softly, sinking deeper into the bubbles. “But by all means, stare all you want, I promise not to hold it against you,” you shrug, flicking a little water his way. “Just, you know, remember to blink occasionally. Especially when I’m attempting one of my very meaningful heart-to-hearts.”
Now Spencer feels like an even bigger ass.
Had you actually been talking?
He winces slightly, offering you an earnestly apologetic glance. “Sorry. You have my full attention now, I promise. Please, continue.”
“Right so, why exactly is the plural of goose geese, but the plural of moose isn’t meese?”
Spencer snorts quietly, eyes rolling toward the hypothetical ceiling.
“Wouldn’t you know the answer to that already?” he muses dryly, raising a brow. “I was under the distinct impression that obscure linguistic inconsistencies were your specialty.”
“I mean, of course I know the technical reason,” you scoff, circling your finger aimlessly through the streaming water. “Vowel gradation, archaic linguistic forms, irregular noun patterns — whatever.” Your expression turns mildly serious, lips pursed in contemplation. “But seriously, Spencer, no amount of theory can justify how wrong it feels to say moose instead of meese.”
“I guess English has never been particularly consistent or accommodating to logic,” he murmurs lightly, gaze flickering downward momentarily, just long enough to confirm that permission was indeed granted. “Makes you wonder if other languages handle pluralization with the same arbitrary cruelty.”
“Oh, you have no idea,” you nod enthusiastically, completely unaware you’ve fallen right into his carefully laid linguistic trap. “Take German, for instance. Sometimes the plural barely changes, like der Vogel to die Vögel, but then you’ve got something as simple as Haus becoming Häuser, which just feels intentionally deceptive. And in Russian,” you continue, “the rules practically change depending on the day of the week. Moose, by the way, is лось, and it somehow manages to be even more frustrating.”
Spencer is fully aware that he’s being intellectually dishonest right now, nodding thoughtfully at your explanations even though he could probably recite them verbatim in his sleep.
But feigning ignorance grants him the subtle pleasure of hearing your smooth pronunciation as you demonstrate.
“You’re incredibly persuasive when you start throwing around languages. I’m not sure if I should be impressed or intimidated.”
You grin slyly, tilting your head. “I’d aim for impressed, personally. Intimidation feels a little harsh, don’t you think?” Your voice dips. “Unless that’s what you’re into, of course.”
Spencer regards you evenly, but can’t entirely suppress the subtle twitch at the corner of his mouth when you scoot closer.
“Careful,” he says. “Keep pushing your luck, and someone might start misinterpreting your intentions.”
You tilt your head coyly, leaning in just enough to draw his attention downward again. "And who exactly would be getting the wrong idea?"
He’s helplessly drawn toward the distracting lines of your bikini — he mentally scolds himself, but the reprimand lacks its usual sting. There’s a curious tightness in his chest, suspiciously similar to anticipation, though he’s trying very hard to ignore that particular analysis.
"Pretty sure that would be me," Morgan announces cheerfully, stepping out from his room and regarding the two of you with blatant amusement. "But go ahead — pretend I’m not here."
Spencer shoots Morgan a look that clearly communicates imminent bodily harm, but Morgan simply grins wider, wholly undeterred.
"You two carry on," he says casually, turning toward his door but pausing briefly to wag a finger playfully. "And Reid — just a friendly reminder, these walls aren't exactly soundproof.
Spencer watches him disappear, vaguely considering whether throwing himself under the bubbles would save him from further humiliation or just prolong it.
join me at the beach for my 1 year/4k event!

so the thing about "read theory" as a mantra: in the social media sphere there is a consistent downplaying of what that kind of commitment actually entails, plus a consistent obfuscation of what exactly the commitment is necessary for.
let's say that you're interested in learning more about specifically "Marxist theory." This, I think, also raises a bunch of questions about what we mean by theory - works of political philosophy, texts on revolutionary and military strategy, political speeches, journalistic or sociological analysis, historiography - these varying things with very different discursive norms and standards of evidence or logic often get rolled into one singular object called "theory." but let's set that aside for now.
you want to learn this for maybe an assortment of reasons, here's a few (non-exhaustive) good ones:
Marxism has been a substantial historical force that has probably had a notable impact on the world around you in some way.
Learning about Marx/ism might offer some level of insight into your current social world that other things are unable to offer.
Many texts - Capital, The Wretched of the Earth, The Second Sex, The State and Revolution - are also world-historical forms of political literature, which is interesting.
Follow-up to 2 - maybe having some level of familiarity with these things will give you the ability to better articulate yourself and participate in social and political movements around you.
generally speaking the Social Media Marxist approach is to tell you to go read off a list of texts of whatever writers the author personally agrees with or whatever works she happens to have read. so you decide to start with the big guy Marx, who is at the top of the list. totally reasonable decision.
however, there are a few contextual questions that might reasonably come up when doing so.
first, it will be clear that Marx did not pop out of an intellectual vacuum; Lenin has a rather popular identification of the "three sources of Marxism" - post-Hegelian German philosophy, French socialism, and English political economy. from my perspective, these are more like three of his main objects of ire (and so in some sense are both influences and also breakages - but not strictly speaking a synthesis), but I digress. so, frequently, in order to grasp what Marx is talking about or responding to, you are going to need some level of familiarity with a lot of additional people: Smith, Ricardo, Malthus, Hegel, Bauer, Feuerbach, Hobbes, Spinoza, Rousseau, Mill, Sismondi. suddenly you are not just learning about the works of one guy, but his attitude towards all the people he relies on for support or aims his criticisms at. and each of those different intellectual relationships is going to be different. sometimes at different times!
second, and relatedly, Marx is not always the most charitable to the people he's criticizing, who were often rival socialists (so there were pretty notable political and personal stakes at work in proving them wrong or diminishing their influence over the movement). the introductory materials to the new translation of Capital also observe that Marx's approach to scholarship is, shall we say, haphazard; often he makes quotes or citations that are not actually representative of what he's citing. finally, many of the people he's criticizing have sort of been rendered obsolete historically *in no small part* due to the success of Marxism as a political orientation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. so to determine whether Marx is being fair to the people he is basing his critique on, we will have to do some level of intellectual work to check. so now we're not just evaluating Marx's relationship to different thinkers but also the substantial content of each of those thinkers themselves.
third, Marx did not pop out of a social vacuum. all of these different writers didn't just crop up from nowhere but wrote within particular sociohistorical contexts, some of which were rather divorced from the European revolutionary wave, first worldwide financial crisis, and the shifting character of the United States in the wake of the Civil War and the formal abolition of slavery - some of the historical events that Marx was more explicitly engaging with. and the radical liberals, republicans, and socialists Marx criticized all also had their own intellectual and social histories. so now we're getting a little far afield from the initial notion, which was just to read some guy, and getting into the realm of social history, and trying to understand the relationship between world history and the ideas produced within it.
fourth, you are a subject in the world, which is to say YOU did not pop out of a social or intellectual vacuum. you likely bring predispositions, assumptions, biases, and cognitive distortions to what you read; we all do. working through those and trying to note where they're happening - where they might be fine and where they might be problematic - will require a certain willingness to reflect, to write, to take notes, to analyze and self-scrutinize, and to be critical of both yourself as a reader and of the text you are reading. (a nested problem is that we have a truly staggering amount of material from Marx and Engels, and you might have to make certain determinations as to which material is important or worthwhile or more useful, and identify the standards by which you think that - all of which requires a certain reflection on your status as a political thinker).
okay, so consider all that. we started with "I wanna read this one guy," we end with "to really grasp the work of this one guy it's also important to know both preceding and contemporaneous world history, his intellectual influences, and the gaps or silences or errors in his work.” now consider that, if you really want to be able to speak on them with some level of confidence and intellectual honesty, you have to apply approximately the same level of rigor to every other writer on the Social Media Marxist approved list - Lenin, Fanon, Che, Kollontai, Cabral, Mao, Luxemburg, whoever. not to mention their critics, both direct and indirect!
Marx developed his work through an incredibly sustained engagement with enormous volumes of different material; we have entire notebooks of him poring over Max Stirner, or Spinoza, or the political economists, or the empirical observations of English factory inspectors. I'm not saying that you have to do that, or even that one strictly *has* to go down any or all of the first three rabbitholes I identified. Marx was in the somewhat unique position of sustaining himself through the support of Engels and his journalistic work, as a product of being in perpetual exile. that's not the kind of position that most of us are typically in.
the point is not "commit yourself to being a perfect monastic scholar in order to reach perfect truth" - such a thing is probably a fantasy, even if we wish otherwise. the point is that if you think "theory" is worth taking seriously, well, you have to actually take it seriously. if you don’t think it has stakes or utility, that’s fine; different people find different things useful. I think “theory” is not a set of dead letters by canonical authors but produced through social life. but if “reading theory” is a way to clarify and assert yourself as a political subject and agent, to claim some intellectual autonomy and acquire some understanding that you can put into practice in your life, then that’s demanding. it’s not impossible, but it does take real effort and a commitment to study and a certain level of resistance to being dogmatic. otherwise you are just letting yourself be rhetorically persuaded by whatever is in front of you or whatever affirms your biases.
as Marx says in the preface to Capital, Volume I, "I am of course assuming that my readers will want to learn something new, and so are ready to think for themselves."

Hi guys!
I feel like I haven't post for ages, and it's probably not only an impression. I had several things to deal with and I don't know how many of you are still here but... Here's my new story. It's coming from the Serie of Lia and the Firefighter.
Please enjoy ♥
You can find the other story of the serie here :)

Your leg nervously bounces up and down while watching your girlfriend evolving on the pitch. You feel the same proudness as every time, Lia is beyond amazing. She plays with everything she’s got, but you can’t help but feel nervous.
“Stop this, you make me nervous!”
You glance at Katie who hit you on your leg. The Irish girl is sitting next to you in the stand, keeping you company without her consent, her red card preventing her from going on the bench with her teammates.
You sigh and take a big breath, trying to steady yourself. You can’t help but be stupidly and excessively concerned about Lia. Katie knows this since she met you, just like everyone else finally. You always have been overprotective with your girlfriend since you met her.
You open the door of her car, the door of almost every room she wants to get in, you cook for her and put everyday healthy snacks in her bag in case she’s hungry between meals. When you are coming home later than her or working during the night, you leave her notes in your house for her to find and prepare her meal for the night, so she just has to put it in the microwave and enjoy her evening.
You act like her personal bodyguard when you are in a crowd, not wanting anyone to even put their finger on her. When she asked you if you wanted to be involved in any way in the preparations of the Euros with her you said yes, to have more time with her but to have a look about people surrounding her too.
In your mind, every single person can take her away from you.
Lia is clever, fun, kind, attentive, mindful, skilled and amazingly beautiful.
What you weren’t expecting, though, it’s that you almost lost her because of something you can’t control.
The first time you felt that weird spot on her body, you just asked her if she hurt herself during training. Lia just shrugged and told you she doesn’t know; it happens to everyone to have bruises without knowing where they come from.
But then that thing grew, and you forced Lia to talk about it to Arsenal’s team. You were beyond nervous when they sent her to take exams in London’s hospital. But then Lia asked to go to Switzerland to be treated and of course you followed her.
You love Switzerland, the peace and quiet of this country and their beautiful landscapes, but you must admit that you were everything but peaceful. You were a wreck of stress, unable to sleep even with Lia peacefully asleep in your arms. You took the habits to have her sleeping on you and when she isn’t, you put your head on her chest.
Just to be able to hear her heart beating.
You don’t understand a lot of German, only the sentences Lia told you and some basics, but it hasn’t helped at all during Lia’s stay in the hospital. Thanks God, Lia’s sister was here too, translating things when Lia was too concentrated with her medical team to do it.
Finally, you had the answer you were looking for. Unlike what was feared, it wasn’t a tumour, “only” an abscess. She still needed surgery for it, but at least she wasn’t in mortal danger.
Well, of course the operation could have gone wrong. You waited for five hours in Lia’s room, not wanting to leave for a single second, too scared to miss Lia’s return.
The nurses seem to take pity on you, bringing you tea and a food tray at some point of the day. You couldn’t eat anything, which might be a first in your life. Only when Lia came back in her room, still half asleep, did you feel like you were able to breathe again correctly.
You stayed with Lia the three nights of her stay in hospital, sleeping in a chair at first and then on a camp bed given by the nurses once again. When Lia is finally able to leave the hospital, you brought them a big chocolate box.
Lia wasn’t authorized to take the plane for several days after, so you stayed with her at her parents’ house. You distract yourself by taking care of your girlfriend (of course), but by helping your in-laws with cooking or even going grocery shopping. Lia took advantage of it to buy some things to take with you when you will go back to London.
Your girlfriend seems to get better very quickly, for general relief. She received a lot of calls from her teammates during her recovery and Leah and her girlfriend offered to come take you at the airport.
After that, Lia had a recovery at home at first, before starting to train with her teammates again.
Even at that time, you took her to every appointment needed, switching your shift with your co-workers. And, thanks to your knowledge with all that medical stuff, you took every morning and every night her pressure, just to be sure that everything is alright.
You insisted that she take another blood test, just to be sure once again. Everything was alright, every time.
But you can’t make the fear of losing her go away.
It’s still here, sometimes waking you up in the middle of the night. It’s a thing to fear losing her because she might fall out of love with you, but it’s something else to lose her if death comes meddle in the middle of your life.
Today is the first time Lia is playing again, and you are more nervous than if she was climbing the Himalaya alone. Your leg isn’t moving anymore but you will probably die of a heart attack soon.
Lia seems happy to be back on the pitch, running quickly to find her spot on the pitch. But you wince every time someone comes closer to her, jumping on your feet when she finds herself on the ground after a challenge from a player of the other team.
“For fuck’s sake sit down” Katie groans, grabbing you by your sleeve. “She’s fine, look. Running like a goat”
You groan and sit down again, looking at the clock. It’s only the 63 minutes. The next half-hour will be a long one.
********
After the game, you are waiting for your girlfriend in the VIP lodge with the other families. Leah’s mother tried to talk to you, but you can’t really repeat what you talked about. You were only concentrating on the door, waiting for Lia to pass it.
Katie never left your side though, talking for you to Leah’s mom and explaining discreetly why you were so strange. Katie puts a glass of champagne in your hands to help you relax.
It doesn’t really work to be honest. You were sitting on a stool, your leg jumping on and on. Katie gave up making you stop it, scrolling on her phone but staying loyally next to you.
She almost falls off her stool when you jump on your feet, Lia finally appearing by the door with Steph and Beth. In three big steps, you are in front of her, feeling a big relief when she passes her arms around you to hug you.
“How are you?” you ask, your face in her hair.
“I’m fine” you can hear the smile in her voice “Did you enjoy the game?”
You hum absently, looking attentively at her to see if you can see any discomfort or anything that should worry you. She’s wearing her Arsenal suit obviously so you can’t really look at all the parts of her body, but you will do it later at home.
“Next time give her a tranquilizer Wally. I never seen someone so nervous in my life”
You roll your eyes at Katie’s comment, passing next to you after she spots her own girlfriend. Lia gives you a curious look and you just shrug, passing an arm around her waist. Feeling her against you gives you peace and your heart might need some peace right now.
You are saved from Lia’s questions by Amanda coming to show you her daughter, Lia cooing lovingly in front of that baby. Who is cute, you have to admit. You smile and talk to her when she’s in Lia’s arms, picking her ribs to make her laugh. The giggle of the baby and Amanda talking about her progress help you to think about something else for a little bit. Which you appreciate.
At some point the baby goes back into her mother's arms and you take Lia in yours, hugging her from behind while she’s talking with some of her teammates.
“Do you mind if we go home?” Lia whispers to you at some point, tilting her head to have a look at you.
“Of course not. Are you tired?”
“A little bit” your girlfriend admits, and you don’t need more.
You grab her things with one hand, your girlfriend’s hand with another and take her to the parking lot. You kind have forgotten that there will be some fans asking for a signature there. Lia, like the sweet cutie pie she is, takes the time she needs to sign all the jerseys and pictures presented to her. You let her do it for several minutes, taking time to put her bag in the car before going back next to her for a moment, before finally stepping in.
“Cookie, it’s cold and your hair isn't dry… Maybe it’s time to go before getting sick?” you say softly, putting your hand on her back.
Lia turns to you and nod softly, excusing herself to the girls she was talking to. You kind of feel bad for her fans, but everyone got their picture or signatures, and you have to take care of Lia anyway. And you know they won’t hold it against you, since several months now your relationship has appeared on the social media and fans only gush over how protective and caring you are with your girlfriend.
You drive both of you to your house, proposing to Lia different dishes you can cook for her tonight.
“What about we just order in? You deserve to take a break too, Baby” Lia proposes softly.
“But we have to be sure that you have all the good nutrients needed for you to recover! The nurses said you need vitam… –“
“Y/N”
You look at your girlfriend with wide eyes, momentarily forgetting about the red light in front of you. Lia never calls you by your name, or only when you did something that you shouldn’t. Your surprise must be funny, because Lia can’t hide the smile creeping on her face.
“I am healed. My scar has healed well too, thanks to your care. Stop worrying like this, you’re going to develop an ulcer”
You roll your eyes and start your car again, driving for the last hundred meters until you are home. Lia’s hand found her way to yours during this time, silence coming inside the car again, only broken when Lia hums the song coming from the radio.
At home, you make Lia sit on the couch and start the laundry before going back to her to choose what to eat. She finally makes her choice for Nando’s and you let Lia choose what you will eat, just happy to be able to have some cuddle with her.
The end of the day between you was great, to be honest. You ate well, watched something you both liked and had a lot of cuddles and laughs together. You then went to bed and after some sweet words and more cuddles, you fell asleep easily.
But now, you are suddenly awake from your sleep, your heart pounding, your hands shaking and some sweat rolling on your neck.
You just have to turn your head to see that Lia is peacefully asleep, lying across the bed. Her breast goes up and down slowly every time she’s breathing and she’s alright. Not like in the dream you just had.
It’s not the first nightmare you have since Lia’s surgery, but you can’t get used to it. You carefully remove Lia’s legs on yours to sit on the border of the bed, pressing the palms of your hands against your eyes.
You try to concentrate yourself on the strange patterns coming from this gesture, but the pictures of your nightmare are too strong, and you aren’t able to fight against them. But you don’t want to wake Lia, so you stand up and silently go out of your bedroom. You don’t know what you could do, honestly. You feel tense, the only thing helping you when you are like this is a hot shower. But once again, you don’t want to wake your girlfriend up.
So you end up in front of the TV, munching blankly some of Lia’s favourite crisps. Your plan is to wait a decent hour to start breakfast and surprise your girlfriend in bed. But you have several hours to wait.
You are surprised in your plans though, a sleepy Lia appearing in the living room before the sun starts to rise.
“What are you doing?” she asks with a raspy voice.
You weren’t expecting your girlfriend to wake up. You jump out of your skin, making some crisps flying from your lap. While you stand, you can see Lia’s eyes going from the crisps, to you, to the wildlife reporting on TV and then to you again.
“I’ll buy you another” you mumble, kneeling to collect the crisps on the ground.
“Since when are you interested in pink flamingos?” Lia asks you, looking at the screen.
You frown and look above your shoulder to see the screen. You weren’t at all looking at it, lost in your thoughts once again. You shrug before standing up.
“Television programs are not particularly interesting at this time”
You cross Lia’s gaze, looking at each other for several seconds. You wonder what she’s thinking about, but you don’t have time to ask. She reaches for you, and you don’t hesitate to take her hand in yours.
“Come back to bed?”
You nod and Lia’s squeak can tell you that she wasn’t expecting you to put your hands around her waist and lift her off the floor and carry her up to your room. She giggles when you put her down on the bed, covering her before you lay down on her completely.
You know you won’t be able to fall asleep again, but you plan to give Lia some more sleep.
Her heart beating against your ear is comforting, just like the strokes in your hair. Like this, you feel good. You could almost fall asleep again to be fair, but you want to be sure that Lia is asleep before you. She’s the one needing recovery, not you.
But when you look up, Lia’s eyes aren’t closed. In fact, she was looking at you.
“What?” you raise an eyebrow.
Lia's green gaze is intense, and you have trouble continuing to look at her. You know what she’s doing, she’s trying to read or find something in your eyes.
“Stop that” you groan, hiding your face in her neck.
She lets you do it, but you know before she starts talking again that you won’t escape her like this.
“Would you tell me if something wasn’t right?” Lia finally asks you.
Her voice is soft, but she doesn’t really give you the choice to answer. You never talked to her about your nightmares or even how terrified you are at the simple idea of something happening to her. It goes way beyond what you ever felt before seeing her in that Swiss hospital. It was very different from the surgery for her knee.
So, you just hum softly for any answer. You don’t want to worry her.
“That is not an acceptable answer”
You know it. But you stay silent.
“Y/N” she tries again.
You don’t move at first, only squirming when she starts to poke at your ribs.
“Babe, stop” you whine “I’m comfy”
“Answer, and you will be able to enjoy this for as long as you want”
You sigh softly, knowing perfectly that you won’t have the last word here. Lia is the sweetest but she’s very stubborn too. An iron hand in a velvet glove.
“I don’t know how to explain it” you admit softly, sitting on the bed.
And you don’t know if it’s a good thing to explain the way you are thinking to Lia. You never hide anything from her and maybe your anxiety is harder to deal with because of that.
“I know you. I can see that something is bothering you, but if you don’t talk to me about it I can’t help you Pookie” Lia says softly.
“That is the point” you sigh again “You just had all those surgeries and medical stuff. You shouldn’t be the one helping, all you are supposed to do is recover and take care of yourself.”
“Actually, you are taking such good care of me that I don’t need to do anything” she smiles.
You could die for that smile, even if you are biting your bottom lips right now, not really sure about what she just said. She seems lost by your reaction, and you hate seeing her so destabilized. So, you take a big breath before answering. You don’t know what you will say but you know that you need to say something.
“I’m just scared” you finally say.
“I need more context”
Lia’s voice is patient, but you find yourself playing with a piece of the bed sheet covering your girlfriend. You turn the sentences in your head several times before actually talking again.
“I always tried my best to take care of you and protect you as much as possible. I can do it if someone annoys you, I can take care of you if you are tired or I can even take you out of a Café on fire. I can look for you if you are injured or uncomfortable, or tired after a training session, but… This time it wasn’t something I can protect you against. And that scared the shit out of me.”
Your eyes were focused on the bed while you were talking, but after some seconds of silence you hesitantly raise your gaze on your girlfriend. Lia is looking at you, of course she is, with so much softness that you feel your heart beating faster, for something good this time. Nothing to compare how you felt during her game. And definitely nothing to compare with how you felt during her journey in hospital.
“You won’t like to hear that, but you can’t protect me against everything in the world, Pookie”
Lia smiles when you pout, but cups softly your cheek with her hand.
“But you were there every second of it and I couldn’t ask for more than this. You were perfect. You always have been with me, since the beginning”
“I just don’t want to lose you” you whisper.
“You won’t. And you need to stop worrying like this for me. I’m fine, you know it. You came with me at all my appointments. You are going to make you sick.”
You bite your bottom lip, a little ashamed to have been caught. It was maybe a little stupid of you to hope that she won’t see anything. And you are pretty sure that it was way before Katie made that comment at the end of the game.
“Okay” you sigh “But you have to swear to talk to me if anything is happening to you”
“I swear I will” she answers easily, taking you again in her arms.
You let it happen, lying down again against your girlfriend. Once again you put your ear on her heart, passing your arm around her waist. The warmth of her body and the cover is great, and you finally can relax. Talking about it to Lia makes you feel lighter than you expected. You even feel your eyes becoming heavy.
You take a look at Lia to be sure that she will fall asleep again, before closing your eyes.
“I love you” you whisper, burying your face in her shirt.
“I love you too” she whispers back.
Two minutes later, you wear out of the world, sleeping peacefully for the first time since Lia’s health difficulty. And you have to admit that it felt good.
