grief in the city, or "how many days off will i get when my lover dies of consumption next march"
Expanding from this post (@puffles HI) or mostly just trying to write it out in a readable fashion. (lor spoilers ahead yeehaw 📚)
Just been thinking. Death in the pmverse city. It's not something you're really allowed to get personal with. But some people just can't help it.
In lobocorp we get a look at what it's like from the inside of a corporation, and like yeah the entire story is about it, but to me Yesod's parts more than anyone else's showcase this feeling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Yesod core suppression dialogue)
The question of detachment comes up pretty often, and he points out Malkuth's as the ideal behavior to cope with it- forgetting you're dealing with humans as much as you can. Through his arc in lobocorp he struggles with it, this idea that it can all be fine if he stops thinking of the others as having a face, a name, and most importantly (for him) a body. Of course a strategy like that stops working as soon as one remembers, as one gets closer. That is one of the main themes of lor.
We're introduced to Xiao midway through the game, and her story unfolds as we start to learn about Roland's. The way she describes herself is similar to how A talks about Yesod, though Xiao doesn't feel special for it. The softness of her (at the time) coworker Lowell confounds her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Xiao's key page)
Then the invitation reaches her, and therefore the news of Lowell's death, and this changes. Her reaction is intense, she describes it vividly. And it feels... kind of natural considering the martial culture of her workplace? Specifically for an Association whose mechanics literally run off emotion levels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Liu S1 reception)
But we immediately see that no, to everyone else this seems like an overreaction to losing a partner. We see it from Chun's reaction, then Angela's, who suggests she simply finds a substitute for Lowell, and Roland himself is surprised by it: he muses about the Light influencing the people of the City: this is such a strange thing it gets compared to the goddamn Distortion! When we take a look at Lowell's own book it seems to confirm that out of the two he's always been the one with the more unconventional mindset.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Lowell's key page)
It's not groundbreaking to say one should care about their partner, but it feels like in the City this isn't really the case? It feels like having someone you cherish becomes something of a nuisance as it can interfere with a Fixer's ability to... well, work. Roland, though affected for obvious reasons, tells Angela about it briefly enough, and it seems it's not particularly noteworthy, having romantic entanglements but also losing them pretty quickly. It's something that happens, that you're supposed to deal with easily enough, and go back to work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Liu S2 second reception)
Instead Xiao's feelings lead her to do the direct opposite; it's noteworthy that before her reception she resigns from the Association, and immediately justifies herself to her subordinates by letting them know this shouldn't affect their careers. It's worth noting that Roland's story is marked by a similar situation, once he's exposed in his revenge quest, he loses his Color title as well as his Fixer grade. In both situations we find that the question of how to deal with Survival (being a survivor to the person you love) can't escape from the problem of Survival (how to make a living). The death of another puts you in actual danger if you actually care about them.
In light of this, Lowell's hopes and promises for Xiao read differently. His apparent softness and sensitivity reveals itself as something he can handle very rationally; aware of how deeply their feelings run, he asks her to vow to always watch over herself.
Tumblr media
(Liu S1 reception)
Instead Xiao, and we later learn about Roland, embrace the horror of what's happened to them, and show us what it's like to go into the deep end of this grief; it's a deviation from what we might consider normal or #HEALTHY, but it's also a display of feeling that usually people of the City just... don't allow themselves to have. I don't wanna ramble about this too long, but since limbus vaguely uses the Divine Comedy as a source, in Dante terms I would say: while Xiao and Roland commit sins of excess of love, letting their anger over their loved ones take them over, the people of the City in general commit the sin of sloth, "laziness of the heart", it's people who refuse to let any kind of attachment in their heart, because it's simply easier not to deal with them. Roland's arc touches on it quite often.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Natural Sciences realization)
Though Roland does eventually turn out to be, well. A big deal, a lot of his behavior in the library is supposed to show him as a kind of everyman of the City. In moments where he talks like this, he's expressing what it actually feels like for most people to live in there. This heavily contrasts with Xiao's own beliefs, the ones she develops through her love, and that leads to her EGO manifestation.
Tumblr media
(Liu S1 reception)
By the end we also know that the truth is Roland's own mindset isn't quite the one he tries to preach ("that's that and this is this"), but the grief over the loss of Angelica, and more generally the pain for the life he's always had, still weighs so heavy on him he isn't able to just start again- he doesn't want to! As the stories goes on and he faces the horrors of the City together with Angela, even this facade of "sloth" fades away, and his actual feelings start to show, the love and the anger and all of the grief- he starts to resonate with the abnos as Angela did, a similar experience to distorting.
While Roland has a lot of interesting dialogue, it'd take a whole other post to talk about it (I'm sure someone smarter has done it already) so for the purposes of this and to keep on topic I only wanna talk about a little bit that Xiao doesn't touch on, and that feels relevant with the perspective of canto VI.
Tumblr media
(Black Silence "soulmates" reception)
In one of the darkest moments, we get a (can I say it now?) ⛈ HEARTBREAKING ⛈ confession straight from the inside of Roland's mind, the fear that in choosing to move on he'll have abandoned Angelica and all they meant for each other. The "pair of linked souls" is tied on a mechanical level, to beat them you need to disrupt their soul link, a buff they give each other that makes them basically unbeatable- they keep each other alive. Roland's fear, after years of Fixer work, after seeing how little value a person's life has in the eyes of the City, is this: that the second he looks away from Angelica's death and his attempt to avenge it, he'll have forsaken her forever, that their love and life together will lose its meaning.
Only with the help of the librarians and particularly Angela he's able to accept that's not the case, and in the final reception he once again wields her name and her gloves, carrying on her legacy and memory for the sake of the future and the new people he wants to protect.
Finally, I wanna show an incredibly interesting piece of dialogue from Leviathan, between Vergilius and Carmen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Leviathan chapter 18, translation by @/SnakeskinFS on twitter)
Now, Carmen's take on love is... something. Love as she means it is what we know to bring to Distortion, but it is interesting that the actual implication in the world she draws up is what the people of the City need back is contact with one another, understanding. It's also interesting Vergilius calls it a word he's unaccustomed to. Obviously here it doesn't apply strictly to romantic love, but this does check out with how little we get to see City residents... well, loving each other.
Xiao for Lowell, Roland for Angelica, as well as honestly Carmen for herself, her vision for the future, stand out in crowds of cordial coworkers and friends of circumstances, for the strength of their feelings, love in its danger and beauty. The paths they end up following are messy, some very bloody, and done in remembrance of the people they valued above all else. It's the theme of love that entwines so closely with that of death, the question of what you do when you're the one surviving and left behind.
So here's where I think of canto VI- WH is so heavily defined by grief. This is partially tied to its literary influences, partially to the author's own experience, but the story is scarred by the various funerals, each of which changes someone's life, mostly for the worse.
Is this malicious? A little. A little... not? Like in the City, the feeling is that the dead, the memory of them, follow because they love the living. When we get to Cathy's death, she and Heathcliff curse each other back and forth before making peace again, but in the end more than their harshness, what hits the most is the connection, the yearning to be reunited- "I care nothing of your sufferings" is soon followed by "I'm not wishing you greater torment than I have", which leads into the Heartbreaking speech, that we already know will be very relevant in the canto, in which Heathcliff takes her pain as his.
NOW I see readings/speculation around that this will be portrayed as lcb Cathy trying to tie Heathcliff to his past forever/them needing to Kill Her, and metaphorically his affection for her in order for him to move on and become his own person, to which I say: meh? I think that misses part of the point, makes her out to be a plot device instead of a character that, like him, has grown in an awful abusive household, and laments in her deathbed that she wishes things had been different, and that the person she loves could stay with her longer, after circumstances beyond their control have forced them apart.
By the end of it, though we know that in the book it doesn't really turn out like she'd like, Cathy claims she'd rather him remember her words, and her, as harsh and cruel than nurse anger while he lives on, she hates the thought that he should suffer more when she's gone, because she, too, feels his suffering as hers.
To me this last wish she expresses is most reminiscent of what we see of Lowell's request to Xiao, the way it's not fulfilled until the last minute. Xiao doesn't listen and she goes on, fully aware she's betraying the trust he put in her, and that she might be the next to die. Because of this betrayal, her feelings, this excess of love threatens to have the best of her, to make her forget about Lowell and focus only on herself and her anger- the "love of the self" that is the Distortion. Her final reception has her talking back to Carmen's proposal and worldview, detailing the way her bond with Lowell, but also Miris, Chun and all of her men, have been keeping her strong to this point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Xiao reception)
With the awareness her lover is dead and gone, she manages to work through her feelings and gain strength from them, deciding that these bonds, and her memory will keep all of them alive through each other.
SO am I saying this is totally happening to Heathcliff in canto VI. I mean, nah, not necessarily. But considering the similarities he shares with these other stories, and how we've already seen these examples of the theme of grief over a loved one being handled before in the previous games and resulting in these genuinely amazing characters, it's something I think about.
As we're talking about a game adaptation that obviously can't adapt 20 more years of story (and let's be real, shouldn't either. If you want to read WH you can just read WH,) I think that would be a reasonable way for the canto to play out: getting to see one of the sinners genuinely lose it over someone's death in a way none of the others really did, explicitly showing the uniqueness of such intense affection in a place like the City, and then slowly beginning the road to recovery. Much like for Xiao and Roland, this being done not as a result of leaving the past behind, but as a direct result of their love for another, and that of their lover as well as everyone else who cherishes them (Miris, Angela and the librarians- I think we'll soon add the sinners to the list).
Tumblr media
(post core suppression dialogue)
To quote another bit from our bestie Yesod, the hope that grows out of the rot, as the death of another, but as your own wounded self as well.
So to conclude. I think in general, in the context of how we've seen major characters work around their grief in previous games it'd make sense for canto VI to reach a similar conclusion, the death being something that weighs heavily, but doesn't obscure the possibility of a future. Still. Love as something dangerous that has extreme power over us, but as something that lives in us and can't be taken away.

Wait a second.
All those kid’s stories where the main characters have to leave the magical world behind at the end are a metaphor for childhood itself.
I feel so stupid for just figuring it out now but it makes so much sense.
You can’t go back to that sense of wonder you had before you knew how everything worked. Back when lightning and fire and flowers might as well be magic. You can’t go back to the same dynamic your friend group had. Back before you all grew up and had to try your best to hold onto each other from the different paths you each started down instead of walking down one together. You can’t be the person you were when you were 9, when you were 13, when you were 18 anymore, and you probably don’t even want to. Back when the most important thing in the world was who won infection tag at recess, or if that boy liked you back, or if you got all the signatures you wanted in your yearbook before all the kids you grew up with went their separate ways. All these things that seem so much smaller when you’re looking back on them as an adult.
Maybe a part of you wishes you could go back, because some of those memories hold pain, yes, some of them were among the worst days of your life, but some of them were magical, too. There are things you wish you could do again, not because you want to do anything differently, but just so you can experience them again.
But you can’t. You can’t go back to that part of your life, and you wouldn’t fit in it anymore even if you could. Your childhood might as well be a portal that’s sealed behind you.
There are days when you’re very, very glad that it is.
There are also days when it kills you inside to know that you can’t go back, no matter how hard you may want to try.

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva
PART 15
〚FIRST〛〚PREV〛〚NEXT〛
Disclaimer: This is a fan-translation for the Japan-exclusive novellisation of the movie Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva. The original novel was written by Aya Matsui under the supervision of Akihiro Hino, and belongs to Level-5.
This translation only aims to be a pleasant read for non-Japanese fans, nothing more: I made a few deliberate changes while translating in order to get the writing style closer to what is usually found in English fanfictions, as the Japanese storytelling can sometimes be different than what we are used to.

☆ Melina Whistler
Yes…
I could remember it clearly.
The unparalleled sense of fear, of entrapment and desolation, when I was sent into the body of someone else…
I looked for a place to hide, but there was nowhere to.
Everything was cold… I could hardly breathe.
I couldn’t stay here! Please, someone let me out!
I screamed desperately, but no one could hear me.
I kept pleading to someone I couldn’t see.
Please, I don’t want to stay here either. But I can’t leave. I have to stay here…
“Melina—Is that you, Melina?”
I had heard a familiar voice.
I could hear… or rather, I could feel it.
I couldn’t see her, but I knew that Janice was close by.
“Janice…?”
“Melina! This is incredible. I can’t believe you are so close to me…”
“I’m sorry, Janice! I shouldn’t be here. I’ll disappear right now… Somehow, I’ll find a way to do that!”
“No, you can’t!”
“Janice!?”
“I’ve just found you again… Do you realise how much I missed you? How much I missed my best friend while you were gone…”
“But, Janice…”
“It’s okay, Melina… I can’t let you go on like this.”
Suddenly, I had felt something shifting.
The sense of fear and desolation disappeared…
“Janice!”
Her voice was moving away.
“This isn’t just for you. This is also for me. Melina, you may not understand, but the grief and suffering of those left behind is so strong…”
I know, Janice…
I had felt Papa’s grief and pain even after I had lost my body…
“You have to understand, Melina. Losing my best friend not once, but twice, would surely break my heart…”
Before I knew it, I was slowly becoming familiar with Janice’s body, as if guided by the waves of the sea.
I had been spoiled by her heartfelt friendship…
At that moment…
The sound of slow clapping brought me back to reality.
It was Descole. The man who had used Papa’s love for me to draw him into his evil ways…
“Excellent. I did not realise that the memory copying had been successful… So congratulations, Whistler, you’ve achieved your goal.”
It was no wonder that you hadn’t noticed, Descole. Someone like you would never understand Janice’s kindness, or the nobility of sacrificing oneself in order to keep others alive.
“Oh, oh my God…”
Poor Papa… He was completely confused.
I looked straight into his eyes. Papa… I needed him to understand my feelings.
“At some point, I started to realise that this was wrong. I can’t live my life at the expense of my friend.”
I told him my honest thoughts.
“It was you who wrote to me, wasn’t it?”
Professor Layton…
I… No, we both wrote that letter. Janice’s voice had become inaudible to me, but our hearts were still communicating.
“It was the right choice to choose you, Professor. I thought you would be able to stop Papa… Just like I wanted him to stop.”
Isn’t that right, Janice?
It was just as you told me before.
“There is no puzzle that Professor Layton can’t solve, Melina.”
“I can’t stay in her body forever… But as long as this device exists, Papa will continue to copy my memories.”
“Melina…”
Papa’s eyes… They were looking at me, not at Janice.
“I had heard a lot about the Professor from Janice. She admired you so much…”
I’m sorry, Janice… I said it.
As soon as you gave me your life, I had realised how much the professor meant to you…
When I first met him on the Crown Petone, I made my most cherished memories. The times when he solved puzzles… That time when we were talking on the beach… That time when we were riding that makeshift helicopter that we had built… I was never alone.
Papa’s voice was trembling.
“Melina, I… This was all for you…”
“Thank you, Papa… I appreciate how you feel. But, please… These horrendous things have to stop now.”
“I just couldn’t accept a life without my beloved daughter… So I…”
At that moment— The whole room was struck by a tremendous quake.
“Professor, the ceiling!”
With a roar, the ceiling above us was split in two, as we all stood under it in stunned shock.
Then Descole took my arm.
“Melina!”
In a flash, Descole ran up the stairs leading to the Detragan and set me down.
A pack of wolves popped out and surrounded everyone. They all let out a terrifying howl then stood menacingly, ready to pounce on anyone at any moment.
“What are you doing, Descole!?”
“I needed Melina’s memories to achieve my true goal,” he replied coldly, standing right next to me.
“Your true goal…?” Papa asked in confusion.
I was with him on this one… I had no idea what this was about either. What could he possibly need my memories for? What could that mean?
Descole twirled his cloak and pointed to the ceiling.
“The resurrection of Ambrosia!”
The ceiling was painted with the Ambrosian crest… The Kingdom of Immortality.
“It all started when I discovered their coat of arms in its entirety…”
Descole turned to the professor and sent him a condescending look.
“Layton, what do you think these symbols mean?”
The coat of arms had a design reminiscent of a king and queen, surrounded by a vast number of lines, dots and jagged patterns…
The professor soon gasped in realisation. “…It’s a music sheet!”
“Correct. A music sheet, written in the Ambrosian way.”
Descole walked over to the Detragan and reached for a sheet music.
“In other words, the coat of arms is inscribed with the first key required to open the door to Ambrosia: a song that could be called ‘A Song of the Stars.’”
“A ‘Song of the Stars’…!?” Luke repeated incredulously.
“The second key is you, Melina.”
I could not believe my ears. “Me… the second key?”
The resurrection of Ambrosia, keys to open a door… I did not understand.
“The first key alone was not enough to revive Ambrosia. This was when I realised that the crest also hinted at the existence of a second key…”
The professor instantly resonated. “The ‘Song of the Sea’!”
Descole slowly took my hand with an icy smile. His grip was just as cold as his face.
“The stars, and the sea. When the two melodies are combined, Ambrosia will be revived.”
“I didn’t realise… that he was after the kingdom itself,” Papa slowly shook his head in shame.
“Alas, by the time the puzzle of the crest had been solved… The only person who had an accurate memory of the second key could no longer sing…”
So that was what this was all about.
The ‘Song of the Sea’… It was the song that the sea around Ambrosia had taught me.
Ever since we had moved to this island so I could recuperate from my illness, I had spent every day gazing out at it. Walking along the beach, or standing on my balcony, with the feeling of the sea breeze embracing me…
It wasn’t long before I had become aware of the melody that the sea was bringing me.
The wind, blowing past the reefs jutting out from the shore, would sing the same song to me every day. The waves breaking onto the shore would add to the music, creating a pleasant harmony, like a small ensemble.
Soon, I had unconsciously began to hum that very beautiful and somewhat nostalgic melody. When the sea and the song were joined together, it had given me a sense of heartfelt sincerity. It was soothing… and it made me happy, as I felt surrounded by a shower of invisible music.
Descole put his hand on one of the Detragan’s levers.
“Even though some memories were left behind… I wanted a perfect copy, more than Whistler did!”
He pulled the lever. Immediately after, the staircase exploded and bright lights flashed on the wall.
The smoke from the explosion blocked my view.

Japanese version cleared up SO many questions that the localisations brushed off.#like how the English & French dubs make it sound like all three songs were written on the Ambrosian seal#while in fact the original version explains that only the song of the stars (+ sun) + a drawing of the sea (+ sun) are there.#So basically it seems like we can deduce here a full timeline of how things went!#Step 1: Des steps foot on Ambrosia and discovers the first known instance of the complete crest.#Step 2: He figures out the Song of the Stars from the music sheet on the crest#and likely deduces that it's the key to reviving Ambrosia.#Step 3: He plays the song of the stars and it doesn't work. He looks at the crest again and sees the drawing of the sea.#He deduces that there is another key related to the sea. Somehow he figures out that there is only one person in the world who knows it.#(I have a hypothesis about the why and how but I'll leave that for later since this hypothesis lacks solid evidence.)#Step 4: Des figures out (somehow) that this “one person in the whole world” is Melina.#Step 5: Melina is sick so he uses that as an excuse to have the Whistlers move to Ambrosia and live inside the black castle he built.#His excuse for bringing them there is that the ocean breeze will do some good to her health.#Step 6: Melina is healthy enough to walk on the shore a few times and she notices that the sea sings to her. She learns the song of the sea#Unfortunately she is already too sick to sing it properly so Descole can't use her. And soon after that she dies.#Step 7: Des and Whistler had been prepared for that eventuality and copied her memories with the Detragan. So they just need a host for her#Des only was able to get his hands on the song of the sea when Melina learned it. And she never wrote it down before dying.#See the music sheet that Layton plays to Nina? It's the song of the sea. Sure. But it's incomplete. It only has the first half.

i don't think i can get all these analyses done by tonight for the trigun book club... at least not to the quality that i would like them to be done at. low mood and energy hit me bad this past month unfortunately. :(
i'll see how many i can get done, but i also wanted to do a quick doodle for halloween too... i mean, i'll get the analyses done eventually (they're all started of course) but i just think finishing 8 of them in one day when they take me forever to proofread is just not feasible. and i want to do them justice. i guess i just won't be using the book club tag is all.

What is the hands of the emperor and where does one find it? :L
it's a sci fi/fantasy novel about the most untouchable, revered, beautiful, friendless and powerful person in the world going on a little beach holiday w his coworkers 😌
thematically, it's about loneliness and belonging and the things that make us human. the emperor (whose "hands", his secretary, are the closest thing we have to a protagonist) can Literally not be touched and it's highly taboo to even look in his eyes. the main drive of the novel is to uncover bit by bit just how miserable that's made him through the ages, and how desperately he's in need of friendship. it's exactly the type of character-driven, psychological fantasy i want to make a nest and live forever in. you can buy a digital or physical copy on the author's website!

Kokomi fascinates me not in the way I think hoyo intended cause like, every time I see her im like "oh its Kokomi. she is sure there! " . I think she would call herself an introvert (needing to recharge energy), but even then i go back to the idea of her having a quest that's more focused her wanting to get some alone time. Perhaps she reads and reads cause thats what her family used to do. She looks like she would enjoy romance stories out of an urge to form a connection cause ya know. no fam
Yeah kokomi is like. Sure is an entity.
Even her vision story is very ???? to me. Her entire profile is very dedicated to like “she’s an influence in watasumi. she does not want to be. she likes military books.” And doesn’t talk about her life or her family or anything tbh. I mean it says she doesn’t like seafood i guess. Her mom is mentioned exactly one (1) time in a voiceline.
And while it’s probably just a writing thing since Inazuma seemed like a hit-or-miss nation overall from community reception, it also feels like it could be intentional if played right. It probably won’t be, but ya know.
