Just finished reading There There by Tommy Orange for class and I think this is the first book in years that’s made me feel such a strong mix of emotions. Like, I’ve been an avid reader all of my life but depressing books don’t usually get to me like this one did. I was filled with anxiety since the beginning and it just got progressively worse and now my head is swimming with so many thoughts, idk where to put it all. I may not be Native American, but I am a mix of Filipino/Chamorro and I really related to a lot of the struggles with post-colonialism culture, authenticity, and identity that the characters went through. Edwin and his feelings of wasting his potential as a writer especially hit home for me. I feel like this book changed my brain chemistry a bit. I need to take a moment to lay down and stare at my ceiling.
