March Reads
10 books!
Astrid Parker Doesn't Fail by Ashley Herring Blake (★ ★ ★/5): I loved getting to see Astrid be a normal human being with wants and needs and I especially loved her getting with a woman!! And telling off her awful mother!! (mommy issues hit hard bro)
Blue Monday by Nicci French (★ ★ ★/5): this was such an interesting little mystery involving twins and I loved how Frida was like "I'm a criminal investigator now" and broke like 10 laws. I was also not expecting that ending holy shit (he killed his twins and took his place)
Lady Smoke by Laura Sebastian (★ ★ ★/5): honestly, I'm not sure anything actually happened in this book aside from a weird love triangle, this 16 yr old queen realizing she doesn't know shit and some half-assed revival from the dead “twist” at the end.
Ember Queen by Laura Sebastian (★ ★ ★/5): this series finale wasn’t too bad, I still feel like if it was written as an adult book it could’ve done so much more with the characters and plot, but I’ll accept it. People die, Theo learns to wield fire, and there’s a lot of unnecessary injures. Truly, where would they be without Heron. Don’t get me started on the dream walking.
The Power of Trees by Peter Wohlleben (★ ★ ★/5): this was a good book, if a little more scientific than I was expecting. Definitely made me think about the human relationship with trees and how we really do take them for granted.
By Any Other Name by Erin Cotter (★ ★ ★/5): I love historical tellings of gay people- factual correctness aside. I did not, however, enjoy the incessant use of the word “tis.” If you’re going to commit to 16th century England you gotta do it all the way and not just sprinkle it in here and there. I did loveeee our chaotic asf mc though- he doesn’t know anything except lust and money (and sometimes love)
From Blood and Ash by Jennifer Armentrout (★ ★ ★ ★ /5): finally got around to this book and let me just say… these new high fantasy authors need more editors. Has no one told them that repetition is the bane of my existence?? If I read the word “Maiden” one more time I’m gonna lose it. On that note though, this book wasn’t too bad overall. I found it highly predictable (like duh of course Hawke is the dark prince) but once I accepted I wouldn’t be surprised I was able to enjoy it. I love me a good vampire story and this delivered.
A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire by Jennifer Armentrout (★ ★ ★/5): someone please tell me why it took the entire book for the characters to move from one place to another. Seriously. There seemed to be little development character and plot-wise and while it was quite steamy... *something* should've happened in 600 pages.
A Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer Armentrout (★ ★ ★/5): this book was far better than the second one but I'm still chasing that high of book one. Book three is almost too much, Poppy goes from being crowned to kidnapped to rescued to dying to being revived and "Ascended" all within the first 80 ish pages... and then after that there's still 600 pages to go. In the course of the book her parentage gets "revealed" like 6 times and finally lands on her being a god? It was good, action-packed and smutty, but my god, someone needs to teach this author the skills of pacing.
Iris Kelly Doesn't Date by Ashley Herring Blake (★ ★ ★ ★ /5): this was such a good end to the little Bright Falls trilogy; I love me a good bisexual mess who doesn't know how much love she deserves. I just didn't like the breakup at the end, it felt like the author was trying to add a little angst in there and it didn't really work because we all knew they would get back together. But hey, I'm never gonna pass up a fake dating trope.

MC Monday Prompt #2 ( @obeythedemons )
tw // panic attack, discussions of top surgery
“We need to talk.” A simple text, one Theo had heard again and again throughout his life. One he heard at the worst time of his life once, and definitely not a text he looked forward to.
He vaguely remembered typing out a reply, something barely comprehensible that could, with some effort, be translated to “give me a moment”. He vaguely remembered sliding down the shower wall into a fetal position, letting the water run over him- clothes and all. He vaguely remembered wondering how he could pack all of the things he loved into a suitcase small enough to take with him, and wondering if maybe Simeon or Solomon would let him stay with them.
What he didn’t remember was anything in between- not turning his room upside down in a panic looking for a place to hide his most valuable possessions, not shoving his wallet under the mattress, not throwing his D.D.D. against the wall to break it and hiding the memory card in the closet. It was all intentional, though not necessarily rational, but his panic blocked out any memory he could have kept. Things were going too fast, and everything hurt so much.
Theo drug in a ragged breath, grabbing a handful of his shirt and twisting. It was thankfully not one of his nicer ones, though the nice lined sweatpants would be interesting to get downstairs without dripping in this current state. He almost regretted the decision to get into the shower with them on, but the weight of the clothing was a weird form of comfort.
Another ragged breath, this time interrupted by a violent knocking that nearly sent Theo into another panic. He made an attempt to stand up, one foot finding traction while the other one flew out from under him, slamming his shoulder into the wall and knocking every single thing off the shelf that wasn’t nailed to the wall.
Lucifer’s face fell from flaring anger to concern and confusion, having expected to have to drag Theo out of the shower to clean his room- it wouldn’t have been the first time, in all honesty, Theo could spend hours in the shower- but this was something else. Theo had experienced panic attacks before, and had eventually grown to trust Lucifer to calm him when he did, but Lucifer had never seen him as manic as he was now. He had never seen him this deep.
“Theo.”
The human opened his mouth to speak, but only a strangled whimper made it out as he realized just how hard he had hit the wall. His shoulder was going to bruise, and most likely his tailbone would be incredibly sore as well. Lucifer slid open the sliding glass door and turned the water off, sighing.
“You’re a mess. Come on, out of the shower.”
“But-” He gasped, the simple word seeming to unravel some of the tension in his body. “The water-”
“Can be dried. Let’s get you warmed before you get pneumonia.”
Theo felt the strength go out of him as he exited the shower, and Lucifer grunted as he held up all of Theo’s weight. Tears began to streak down his face, blending with the water streaming from his soaked hair. His chest heaved and his hands shook, the full weight of his panic settling on him.
Most of the way through changing (and past Theo’s silent mourning for the mattress that was now soaked with water), Theo finally found his voice. “I wasn’t thinking.”
“Obviously”
“I’m sorry, I’ll clean it up.”
“You will, yes, or you will not be receiving another D.D.D.”
A pause, wherein Lucifer managed to tug a shirt over Theo’s head.
“If you are comfortable-” he stopped the sentence short, seeming to rearrange the next sentence in his mind. “If you wish to tell me what happened, I will listen.” Theo could tell he believed it was something he had done, and...
“I’d rather you just... tell me what it was you wanted.” His voice was stilted and hesitant, the last wisps of panic swirling at the thought of explaining what had happened in his mind.
A lightbulb clicked on in Lucifer’s head and his eyes flicked up to Theo. Thankfully, though, he elected not to say anything about it and simply nodded, sitting beside Theo on the edge of the bed. He shifted, not entirely sure of where to start this conversation. “Your binder seems to be rather inhibitory of many activities at RAD.” Theo’s brow furrowed, but he nodded. “I believe it would, in the long term, be beneficial for this to no longer be an obstacle. I would be willing to fund a solution to this.”
It took nearly a full minute for his words to sink in. Theo sucked in a deep breath, turning to Lucifer so suddenly that their heads nearly collided. Lucifer smiled, knowing Theo had realized what he was implying.
“Are you saying you’ll pay for my top surgery?”

theo taking care of an overworked mc 🥺
Hey Anon! Theo's writer has a little gift for you:
“... and after six hours of that, I was on the phone with the German factory for three and a half hours, and we still didn't come to a conclusion. Argh, sometimes I hate this job!” I fall face-down on the couch in a dramatic manner.
Theo kneels down next to me and lays a comforting, warm hand on my shoulder. “Well, that certainly sucks. Do you want to vent some more or forget about it?”
“Please, just make me forget about all of it.”
Theo nods and heads upstairs while I continue my laydown on the couch. How come there are no coins under the cushions to play with?
A couple of minutes later, Theo returns carrying a little stack of clothes. “Put them on.”
“No…” I whine. “Can't we just stay here on the couch, eat chocolate, and wallow in pity?”
“No. You said you wanted to feel better. Now put them on and be outside in five minutes.”
I watch Theo disappear in the kitchen while I change my usual dress for a pair of jeans and Theo's… “No,” I correct myself, “...my hoodie.” Grumbling, I drag myself outside where Theo is already waiting by his car, a thermos in hand. He waves at the car: “Get in.”
“Where are we going?”
“To get your mind off of things.”
We turn on the highway, then soon turn to a local road. As the light slowly fades, we go on a gravel road, then a dirt road heading into a forest. If I didn't have Theo next to me, I'd be seriously spooked out. As is, the change in scenery is already stirring up my urge to get back into our usual jokes.
“Okay, I’ve got to ask - will this be in the news tomorrow? A loved car-part dealer found dead in the woods. The boyfriend is under custody.”
He reaches a hand over and playfully ruffles my hair. “I already see the headlines. The last to hear from her was a tiny, luxury car part manufacturer in Munich.”
We laugh as Theo parks the car by a small clearing in the woods.
As I wonder what we're doing here, Theo grabs a small bracelet out of the glove compartment and puts it around my wrist. “This will keep mosquitoes and ticks away.”
I follow him out of the car as he rummages through his trunk and pulls out a huge insulated blanket and a pair of sleeping bags.
“Do you just carry those things in your trunk?”
“I took my brother's kids camping last weekend, remember? Now come; let's find a good spot.”
We find a level spot in the clearing and put down the blanket. As I'm ready to plop down, Theo shakes his head and extends his hand: “Your phone.”
A real look of terror crosses my face, and I cradle my phone to my chest. “No! What if the Germans call…” I didn't even realise it was in my hand, but now I'm reluctant to give it away.
“That's the point. They can call on Monday.” He gives me a stern look, and I pout as I hand my smartphone over.
He turns the smartphone off and pockets it. He does the same with his own. After that, we lay down on the blanket and huddle together under the sleeping bags. The nights are starting to get chilly, but Theo is radiating enough heat to keep us both warm.
“What now?” I ask.
“Just look up. And try to let it all go.”
“Now that's ridiculous. How am I supposed to do that?” I think, as I look up while Theo starts humming a song under his breath. Twenty million thoughts are rushing through my mind; it feels like they'll never stop. But ultimately Theo is right - as I let all of my worries pass over me as a wave, they seem to recede one by one.
After what feels like an hour, my hand stops subconsciously trying to find my phone. A couple more minutes pass, and the thoughts of the manufacturer I had the heated discussions with slowly fade from my mind. It's just me, Theo, and the stars around us. The clear night allows us to see the numerous stars in the sky, including the arm of the galaxy.
“What do they call it? A morning filled with four hundred billion suns.”
I turn my head towards Theo and scan his features. I wonder what he's thinking. Probably something along the lines of my bike is making a strange sound and I don't know why.
He notices my look and turns towards me, offering his trademark smile.
“So, feeling better?”
“Yep.”
“Wanna head back?”
I shake my head and scoot myself closer to him. “A couple more minutes? I'm enjoying this.”
A while later, as we pack up everything and get back to the car, I take a peek in the backseat and then glance around. We’re in a secluded spot, it’s the middle of the night, no cars have passed by at all…
“Say, Theo…”
“Yeah?”
“I've got something I've wanted to strike off of my bucket list for a while. Would you say that the backseat is big enough for two people?”
I watch as confusion is replaced by realisation, then by a small smirk. “Why don’t we go and find out?”

Like the Bonfire of Awe, Which His Thirst Burns In
Author: @assomoir Fandom: Ikemen Vampire Character(s): Theodorus van Gogh / Female MC Rating: E - Explicit Warnings: Smut, Mirror Sex
Prompt: Jealousy Summary: Sometimes all she needed was a reminder about how helplessly in love he was. Theo knew this better than anyone, and got a little creative in the process.
“I think you should visit tomorrow, too.”
Theo inwardly sighed at the saccharine-sweet voice. Madelaine Godefroi slowly entered his line of sight, and he politely looked up from the files he had been putting inside his suitcase.
They were only supposed to drop a painting off at this mansion and leave. What the hell happened?
“We do have another appointment with your father, but not until the 15th. Besides, he won’t even return to Paris until next week.”
“… Well, yes,” she seemed surprised that he knew about it, before quickly composing herself again, “but you don’t need to see him. I’ll be here to hear more about this new art movement you’re campaigning for, and maybe purchase a painting or two in the process.”
Theo resisted the urge to roll his eyes. He wasn't stupid – he'd seen how the young noblewoman was actually interested in him and definitely not the painting they brought for her father. But the fact that Marquis Godefroi was one of their loyal clients and main investors in Vincent’s biggest exhibition yet really got him choosing his words carefully. Everyone knew how spoiled the girl was, and who could say what would happen if he just straight-up said no?
From across the table, he saw his dear little apprentice quietly observing the exchange. They exchanged a glance, and she nodded in wordless understanding before opening her notebook, making a show of checking their schedule.
“Mademoiselle,” she started, “unfortunately, our schedule is fully booked tomorrow. If you don’t mind, we can visit you next Monday?”
“Goodness, dear!" Madelaine's amused laughter rang loudly in the spacious living room, surprising them both. "I almost forgot you were here too! Sure, sure!”
Oh, shit.
There was no way he could have missed the amalgamation of shock and annoyance that flitted across her face for a split second before breaking into her usual smile.
(In hindsight, he really should have seen it coming.)
Later that night, Theo returned from the thermae to find her brushing her hair in front of the vanity. There was an undercurrent of stiffness in the set of her shoulders when he approached, and he stopped short of embracing her when he saw how deep in thought she seemed to be. It wasn't until she put the brush down and their eyes met through the vanity mirror that he got up and kissed the top of her head, letting her sweet – almost sinfully so – scent fill his senses. Hunger had manifested itself in him for some time now, but resolving her bad mood took precedence over everything else.
“What’s wrong?"
The way she leaned back onto his chest was almost unconscious, just like how his arms immediately wrapped themselves around her. He could practically feel the exhaustion seeping away from his bones the longer they lingered in that position.
"I know you’re upset,” he repeated in a murmur, “but please talk to me.”
She hummed a thoughtful sound. It was not an answer, but he knew from experience that at the very least, it meant she would eventually be willing to talk.
Just not immediately.
So they stayed like that for a while, the distant, restless twinkle of Mozart’s piano playing in the background. He knew the shapes of everything even in the darkness of her bedroom – the way her hair framed her face and cascading down to her hips, the caramel sheen of her nightgown, or the slightly downward curve of her lips, bitten far too often but still soft and plush and so pretty. Theo looked down to where his lover was swaying slightly in his arms, counting his own heartbeats, and closed his eyes to where it was darker still.
“The Godefroi heiress really likes you."
This proved his guess right: she was indeed jealous. Yet his guts told him she wasn’t telling the full story, and something about the whole atmosphere felt really off. Like the calm before the storm, unnerving him in a way he couldn't explain.
“And?”
“… That's it? That's all you've got to say?” she sighed. "Never mind then."
“No, I meant it. You're not telling me everything.” She had been jealous before, but not like this. Never like this.
Another bout of silence followed.
Then in a small voice, she whispered: “My birthday is coming soon, remember?”
He opened his eyes and straightened himself, now more than a little lost. Why did she speak like that was a bad thing? And what did her birthday have to do with this? “Of course. What about it?”
“Theo,” she took an exasperated breath and turned, but nothing could have prepared him for the way she looked into his eyes – like she was desperately, hopelessly, searching for something, and with every passing second she failed to find it her eyes slowly clouded over with resignation. “You do realize I’m getting older every day, right?”
What.
He definitely did not like where this was going.
“Liefje. What are you talking about?”
“Just—” she faltered at the nickname but still chose to turn her back on him, like she was trying to remove herself from the conversation. “I’m obviously a year older than when I first came here, and— and I really can’t tell how much I’ve changed? Birthdays are like reminders that I will keep getting older and there’s nothing I can do to stop it,” she said, carefully curbing the bitterness in the back of her tongue even in anger. “Obviously little Miss Madeleine and her cute flirting aren’t helping my case.”
In the heavy silence following her outburst, his mind raced back through the last couple of months. This Godefroi incident might be the last straw, but this was not the first time they had clients flirting with either of them. Something must have changed – something so subtle that even he’d missed it, yet big enough to leave them in this entangled and unsettling mess of emotions in its wake.
She hastily rummaged through the shelf and brushed her hair once again in what seemed like an attempt to calm herself down, all while refusing to spare him a glance. It took a few more seconds before his head cleared up enough for him to take action, and when it finally did, he took her reluctant hand, leading her to sit next to him on the bed.
“How long have you been feeling this way?”
A sigh. “I don’t know.”
He grabbed the hands that were fidgeting restlessly on her lap and studied the lines of her palm, like they could yield the answers to all her troubles.
"I'm so sorry. I should have noticed it sooner."
She wasn’t crying, but he just realized that the bags under her eyes looked a bit more striking than usual. He caressed them pensively, wondering how on earth did he miss this.
"It wasn't your fault."
"Still—"
"No, really. It's… not anyone's fault," she huffed. "At least I know you're not flirting back."
The idea was so absurd in his head that he couldn't help rolling his eyes. "You would never have to worry about that."
"Shut up."
"I'm serious."
"Riiight." She shot him a playful smile, yet the slight disbelief in that single syllable bothered him to no end.
"You don't believe me, hondje?"
"Hmm… and if I don’t?" She laughed then, but Theo felt his chest ache at that answer. "No, no, I’m just kidding. Of course I trust you. It's just that— hmm…" She looked up, hesitant, like she was whispering it into the aether. "I just needed to hear it. We've been so busy lately, you know?"
—and then it hit him.
So busy was an understatement. They practically hadn’t had a proper conversation in almost two months; and it all started when the final preparations for Vincent’s latest exhibition were set in motion.
Theo had been so busy organizing the whole thing that they didn’t get the chance to talk as much as they usually did. The typical leisurely conversation on rides to and from the city became mostly business, with him scribbling things away in his notebooks, managing his schedule with investors and her double-checking their to-do list while occasionally fretting that he might get sick from all the intense reading inside the moving carriage. Their weekly dates were exchanged for venue hunting, meetings, or even modelling for his brother’s paintings. Most nights, he stayed up so late that she couldn’t keep up no matter how much she wanted to – more than once, he caught her falling asleep on his desk, in the middle of sorting letters or cataloguing Vincent’s paintings.
He had been so sure that the drastic change of pace would not affect them much, and instead thought that it was somewhat adorable to see her just as invested as he was in this whole affair. Had foolishly assumed that just because she never complained, everything was – and would be – just fine.
Had somehow forgotten that sometimes, all she needed from him was simply spoken reassurances, and nothing more.
(And now he’d gladly give them to her, no holds barred.)
“I see. Wait here.”
There was a huge standing mirror in the corner of her room, an oval-shaped thing with golden frame courtesy of the Comte. Theo had never thought much about it, until tonight’s event gave him a completely different idea in mind.
As someone who believed that action spoke louder than words, how else would he drive the point home?
She eyed him warily as he turned the nightlight on and dragged the mirror to the bedside. The apprehension lasted even after Theo sat down on the bed himself, facing the mirror, and gestured for her to sit in front of him. “What? What do you mean? What is it for?”
“Just come here. I know you like surprises.”
“… I don’t know about this one,” she retorted drily.
Yet she complied anyway, sitting with her knees folded up, allowing him to see the smooth expanse of her thigh through the reflection. With her back against his chest he could feel the warmth of her skin against his own despite too many layers still separating them. He brushed her hair back with his fingers and kissed the first inch of exposed skin on her neck, his breath vividly hot in the cold night air.
A quick glance into the mirror told him she had her eyes closed, and that wouldn’t do. He tugged on her hair, instantly opening her eyes and eliciting a surprised gasp that went straight to his groin.
“Keep your eyes open,” he whispered in her ear, low and tempting, “I want you to watch.”
“Theo—”
The room was dimly lit, yet the scarlet flush on her body was clear for him to see. With one hand, he traced the rosy path from the valley of her breasts, up to the outline of her collarbone, before finally closing around her throat – tight enough to excite her, just how she loved it. When his fingers dug into her skin just right, the way her body arched so wonderfully against him was definitely something worthy of a painter’s brush.
Too bad the mere thought of anyone seeing her in this state was enough to make his blood boil.
“Listen to me. Look into the mirror.”
“No. Theo, stop, please—”
“You really want me to stop?” It was half-threat, half-question. Theo nibbled on the skin of her neck, savoring the heated moans he pulled out of her lips and shuddered when the sounds she made chased their way down his spine like gaslit flames.
“Mm—”
“Yes or no?”
“It’s embarrassing…”
Exactly, he thought. She didn’t want him to stop; she just needed to get over that initial embarrassment.
“You know your safe word. If you want me to stop, say it.” One. Two. Three. A small chuckle escaped him when he noticed the pout resting on her face, yet she said nothing. “I’ll take that as a no, then.”
His other hand moved to slide the straps of her nightgown off her shoulders, one by one, and as he did so she tried to turn her head away. It was no match to his strength though, and when she whined in embarrassment he couldn’t hold back his smile any longer.
Look, he wanted to tell her, to make her understand. Look at you.
How can I look at others, when I have you?
Her breasts were heaving rapidly as her breath quickened, and Theo couldn’t resist squeezing them. She moaned loudly, throwing her head back as his fingers played with them – pulling, massaging, pinching, or worse: bouncing them up and down, all while staring right into her eyes.
“What are you—!”
“Oh, but you like it, don’t you?” He parted her legs and slid her panties off, exposing her damp center. “See? It’s already soaked through.”
His fingers rubbed the wet slit up and down in an agonizingly slow yet firm caress, and it worked like magic – her legs opened even wider, leaving his throat dry. He had previously been ignoring how hard his own cock was but the sight really made the throbbing more insistent that it was almost painful; not to mention how his fangs were already out and itching for a taste of her.
“Can’t you see how ravishing you look right now?” he lightly bit her earlobe. “Or do I need to reveal more so you can see better?”
To his surprise she suddenly grabbed the back of his head and pulled him down for a fierce kiss. Long fingers winding roughly into his hair to forcefully tilt his head to the side, giving her a better angle to suck on his tongue and lick on the inside of his mouth as she pleased. If she was doing this to distract him from looking into the mirror, then it definitely worked because right now the only thing he could think about was how good everything felt; how the helpless moans she sighed into the kiss turned him on so much that it was a miracle he hadn't come out of sheer frustration alone.
When she finally broke the kiss first, gasping for air, he wasted no time in forcing her to look into the mirror once again with one hand before rubbing her clit in a harsh, repeated motion with the other. She let out a surprised squeal that almost immediately turned into broken gasps, desperately grabbing the messed-up bedsheets for purchase while her hips bucked uncontrollably.
"Does it feel that good?" He forced the words out despite wanting nothing more than to wreck her senseless right then and there. "Look at how gorgeous you are. I love how your body is always so honest to me."
Just as her legs started to tremble, he stopped the ministrations altogether – earning a loud whine from her. He was about to tease her several more times when she looked up at him with those doe eyes of hers; teary from the pleasure and face pink from ecstasy.
Theo knew a losing battle when he saw one.
"Nooo, don't stop now," her hand guìded his fingers back to her dripping center. The gesture was so impossibly hot that Theo had to bury his face in her shoulder and take deep breaths to keep from biting her. "Please? I'm so close…"
His own arousal felt like it was about to burst anyway. There's no way he would say no.
Theo stroked the length of her fold with a finger before it sought out the source of her wetness to slowly dip inside. It was only halfway in when she started grabbing his forearms impatiently and whining for more, so he added one more finger and immediately pushed them deep. Curling, scissoring, his palm rubbing against her clit with every motion as he plunged the digits in and out of her wet heat. At first he kept a leisurely pace, secretly enjoying the way her hips kept thrusting up to seek for more. Only when she started clawing on his arms hard enough to leave scratch marks that he decided to pick up the speed, pulling desperate moans out of her that went straight to his leaking cock.
The more he watched her wanton reflection in the mirror, the more the thought of fucking her became dizzying. When it culminated into something almost unbearable Theo finally gave in and sank his fangs into the soft skin of her neck, carelessly gulping down her blood in an attempt to quench his seemingly endless thirst for everything about her. The stimulation was apparently a little bit too much for her, though, because she suddenly cried out in a loud pathetic whimper; a rush of liquid gushing out of her and splattering the bed and mirror.
"Hahh— fuck, fuck that was so hot. That's it, don't hold back."
Still trembling, she let him guide her down on all fours. Through the mirror she caught him opening his zipper to stroke his erect cock and moaned in appreciation.
"Like what you see?"
"Yes," she answered without missing a beat, amusing him. “Yes, you look hot."
He slapped her ass hard, a little annoyed. "Exactly what I thought when I saw you. Do you understand now?"
Her only response was a shaky laugh, a little shy, and his heart felt so full like it was about to burst.
With his patience running out, Theo rammed into her so suddenly that her body jolted forward from the impact. The pace he set was relentless, punishing, and it didn't take long until her still-sensitive walls clenched down so tightly around his cock as she came again. Hot liquid of pleasure tightened low in his stomach, making his body rigid with tension that bordered on painful and it was almost too much but also not enough— until everything was released from him all at once, and all he could see was white.
But he wasn't finished.
Theo sneaked his hands below her knees and hoisted her up, facing the mirror one last time, before pulling his cock out. Too weak to resist, all she could do was watch as his cum and her own slick dripped down on them both – it was so stupidly erotic that Theo felt his arousal twitched back to life.
(Now's not the time, though.)
He put her down and mustered all the strength he had left to find the washcloth and clean them up. She'd want to take a bath again, but it would probably have to wait – seeing how limp and pliant she was in his arms.
"You okay?"
"Mmhm. Never better," she answered, giving a thumbs-up and earning her a very Theo-esque snort.
(She was most beautiful like this, he thought. Luxuriating in pleasure, being completely immersed in bliss while allowing himself to take care of her.)
As he finished wiping the inside of her thighs, she pulled herself up to give his cheek a kiss. Her lips brushed his throat as she spoke, knuckles grazing his waist as she leaned close enough to whisper: "Thank you, Theo."
But there was a glimmer in her eyes, like the moonlight reflected, that spoke more than her hesitant words ever could. Maybe this would be enough for now, but not for later. Maybe they would make another mistake in the long run, missing another red flag and forgetting how much they've been through. Maybe there would be times where his words ring hollow to her, or where his doubts and demons win over them both.
It's okay.
He didn't mind. They could always fix it together – they had all the time in the world.
"You're welcome."
Always.

the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
ikemen vampire: temptation through the dark theo van gogh / mc | T | [ ao3 link in bio ]
The challenge seemed pretty simple: to try to befriend the university bookshop’s most sour employee, Theo van Gogh. As a literature major with a boatload of book recommendations on her back, it ought to be a simple task indeed. But as she uncovers what lies between Theo’s pages, the more she finds it harder to become closer to him without having to put the feeling directly into words. What can she learn from Theo about what it means to stay—and how can she teach Theo about what it means to let go? | written for ikevamp big bang 2020!

CHAPTER 6 OF 22
Take hands. There is no love now. But there are hands.
- Laura Riding Jackson, "Take Hands".
--
When she first started hanging out with Theo and Arthur, Theo had left with her one piece of advice—one very, very important piece of advice: “If you’ll only ever listen to one thing I say, let it be this one: do not owe Arthur a favor, ever.”
Of course, in the usual Theo fashion, he did not give her any sort of context about it, no explanation as to how he had come to that very grave conclusion. Except that he knew he was right. And she was going to ask, but after hearing Arthur’s triumphant laughter at having overheard that—well, maybe the mystery was a little more than worth it.
And just like that, she had tucked that advice off at the back of her mind.
So now, she’s in the bookshop again, 2:00 pm on a Sunday, holding Arthur by the hand asking him a favor.
“Please, please, please, pretty please Arthur?” she begs, shaking his hand side to side as she goes. It is the midterm season now, and leaving your fellow students on their own isn’t really a thing in this university. Where possible, everyone is gathering to have group studies and teaching sessions. She figures Arthur could afford her one. Or seven. “You’ve taken his class, haven’t you? The infamous worst professor of the College of Arts.”
Of course, Arthur has. If he’s going to kind-of-not-really minor in Literature, the way he’ll do it is the way he loves the best: the hardest, most challenging way. Of course, that means he got the toughest classes out of the way first.
“Hardly the worst, love,” he says, with a mock-flip of non-existent long hair. “I’d say that fancy fake British accent woman teaching poetry is much worse than that bloke, but that could only be because I couldn’t stand what she was doing to the syllables.”
“Yeah, sure but—that’s not the point,” she says. “Look, I need a recommendation letter from this grumpy, wrinkled banana of a professor, and I’m not getting it unless I pass his exam. But you know how his exams are, he teaches you the English alphabet and then quizzes you in Spanish kind of exams, I just need to prepare properly and—well,” Dazai’s face flashes before her eyes, “you’re the most reliable one I could ask for? Please?”
Arthur lets out a small overdramatic sigh that’s really entirely theatrics. She knows better. “Here’s to me rescuing your sorry little ass, little miss. I’ll help you, but I have two conditions.”
“Yay!” she claps her hands excitedly and grins. “Yes, any! Give me!”
“First, you’ll owe me one favor.”
“Yes, sure, got you,” she nods.
(From the counter, she hears Theo murmur: “You have made the worst mistake of your entire life,” but she ignores it.)
“And—you’ll bring my old chap Theo.”
“What?”
She and Theo both look up at the same time.
And answer at the same time.
“What?” “Wait, wait, why is he coming?”
Arthur laughs. “Are you both so against it?”
“No, I’m just—curious?” she hesitates. “Does he even want to go?”
Theo and Arthur take a moment to glare at each other, which at this point you already know is the equivalent of them doing a high five or a handshake—it’s pretty much harmless.
Arthur’s flat smile turns into a big grin. He sing-songs: “Theo~”
“I can’t owe you a favor for asking you to shut up,” Theo says.
But Arthur is brimming with confidence when he says, “Well, no, it was a favor to me, so you’ll need to respect it.”
And Theo knows that resisting Arthur just spells trouble, so he settles for glaring even sharper, larger daggers into Arthur’s face, but does not argue: “Klootzak.”
And the Brit grins. “That’s why you shouldn’t try and owe me anything, old chap.”
She blinks and wonders what is going on.
--
Of course, work in the bookshop doesn’t end, and there are more and more customers looking for supplementary readings (or even distractions) so Theo and Arthur only get to join her after the shop closes at 5:00 pm. She’s announced that she’ll be studying every day at the Little Owl, the café Vincent works in, and Arthur had gleefully agreed to follow instead of having her move places. Besides, Arthur insists he cannot work without the taste of the coffee the cute barista (“not Vincent,” Arthur promises Theo) makes for him. Theo sighs, longing for the quiet and Arthur-lessness of the College of Business’ library, but decides to follow through with his promise.
Theo was alone at the bookshop today—Monday, Arthur’s day off—and so only follows suit to her and Arthur at the café once his shift ends. Vincent’s shift at the café ends an hour earlier than Theo’s at the bookstore, so the two brothers just miss narrowly miss each other. Which is a good thing, because even if Vincent already knows, he would be a little bit horrified if Vincent saw him headed to the two rascals already there. Is this who his brother thinks he hangs out with? No, Vincent, they are the exception, he wants to say, but he doesn’t want to argue with his brother during work.
“Why hello there, dear slave of capitalism,” Arthur greets happily. He’s wearing the glasses he wears when “he’s taking the world seriously,” the one Theo asked him to wear more often, for god’s sake.
Theo shakes his head. “We are slaves to the same bookshop, Arthur.”
“A really good bookshop!” she pipes up, looking up from her little studying set-up just as she finishes writing something down. In front of her, she has an old book borrowed from the library laid out on a book stand, a standing pencil case with all sorts of markers and pens, a notebook, and a little notepad to scribble on. Then, she points at Arthur with her pen. “I know you said don’t owe Arthur favors, but this doesn’t seem to be that bad an idea.”
“It will eventually be,” he says nonchalantly. “Well, don’t let me interrupt in your studying?”
“He’s actually done tutoring me for today,” she says, “so we can actually study on our own now.”
“But together,” Arthur insists. “That was my condition. Also, are you not forgetting something, little bird?”
Theo blinks. She pauses and then gasps. “Oh right! Right!”
She pulls out a lunchbox.
This isn’t entirely surprising on its own, because the two of them had decided to work for a good amount of time, and it might be cheaper to bring your own food than buy over and over again at the counter, even if it’s just a cookie or two. It’s midterms season so the café allows outside food, if for the sanity of its usual customers.
Except.
“I brought these for you, Theo.”
For Theo? But it’s nearly dinnertime, and he won’t be here for long…
Theo cautiously takes the lunchbox but doesn’t open it.
“This isn’t poisoned, is it?” he asks—jokingly.
She rolls her eyes and shakes her head. “Oh, if I wanted to off you, Theo, there are better ways. Open it up, won’t you?”
And Theo does; pops open the little container to peer at what’s inside, and—
The lunchbox has pancakes inside.
Not full-sized pancakes, but small ones the size of poached eggs, fluffy and golden. Theo flushes.
“A little angel told me you liked them,” she says, grinning at his expression.
Theo realizes how transparent he has been about it and glares at Arthur in response. Arthur looks as remorseless as ever to his misery, but—does not claim the act with a smirk or a holler.
But the surprise isn’t over yet, because then she takes out of her bag the smallest commercially-available bottle of his favorite brand of syrup, giving it to Theo. And with a smirk in her voice, she says, “Can’t have pancakes without this, no?”
Theo’s ears are aflame , a deep red. Of course his own brother would betray him. Always looking out for him in the best of ways and then betraying him in the most expected of ones.
Theo takes the pancakes with a gruff Thank you that seems to be enough for her, and then the three of them return to their studying. Not that he does it entirely well that day, because has trouble focusing on his studies at all thinking of how delicious the pancakes she’s brought him actually are.
--
They study together the rest of the week.
It rains on Tuesday, and the café is more crowded than usual. For the first of three hours they spend there, it is only her and Theo, heads turned low into their thick books. Arthur arrives late because he said he had to take a detour for a “sweet skirt” from the medical department. Theo asks if it’s one of his professors he’s trying to talk into giving him a passing grade for his piss-poor efforts. Arthur does not deny. They pick up dinner at a local convenience store before heading their separate ways home on their respective bikes.
It is still raining on the evening of Wednesday, and Arthur and Theo have to run (without umbrellas, because—well, because they’re idiots) the distance from the bookshop to the café where she is waiting, jumping in between eaves and doing their best not to end up too drenched. Not that it works out that well, because she still looks at them pitifully before ordering the both of them coffee for their little misery. They dry off pretty well though, but they don’t get to stay too long because she insists they go home and actually dry off properly before they get sick.
Arthur finally takes their little study session a little seriously for himself on Thursday. Their usual spot—her favorite spot, mind you—is occupied when they arrive, so they’re camped out at a long table, she and Arthur sitting side by side and Theo across the both of them. Theo’s brought bound books for the past few days, but today he has sheaves of papers (readings, perhaps) and a leather-bound notebook (“That’s when you know he’s down for srs bsns,” Arthur says, and she asks how the hell he was able to say it like it was type-speak in real life). Arthur’s no different, with his thoroughly annotated medical anatomy books sitting in front of him, glasses on his nose.
But Theo… Theo is so distracting.
When they decide to study separately—that is, when Arthur isn’t clarifying a particularly complicated concept or Theo isn’t helping her out by quizzing her—the three of them work side by side in comfortable silence, all working with an earpiece or two on to at least dull the sound of the rest of the café working in their own little worlds. So this isn’t exactly odd; they’ve been doing this since Monday, after all, and if she were to be honest, she’d enjoy it if they did this a little more often in the future, if possible.
So then why… is she so distracted?
Why does she keep looking up from the poem she’s turning upside down with annotations and notes and markings to see if she can sneak a discreet glance at Theo, his eyes trained on the things he is studying? Why does she keep looking hoping she can stare at least a few more seconds at the unusual side of him, none of the crease marks on his forehead when he’s being rude or sarcastic, just concentration, deep blue eyes not straying from the pages through the rim of his glasses. And oh—Theo with glasses is such a sight! She’s not interested in him in that way—no—but by god, does he look different with glasses. Maybe she’s just gotten so used to Arthur with glasses that it doesn’t strike much in her, but Theo—
“Stop staring at me,” Theo huffs, looking up at her and meeting her gaze. His bangs are pulled to the side where he’d brushed them off, the back end of his hair standing a little cutely upwards because he was fiddling with the nape of his neck earlier with his pen, and—well.
It’s hard to not be blown away when he looks like that.
“Oh shit, sorry,” she says, snapping out of it with a shake of her head. Getting caught is such a rookie mistake! “I was zoning out.”
Arthur chuckles next to her. She and Theo pretend not to have heard him.
On Friday, she and Arthur decide to go have a little quizzing session to prepare her for the oral part of her exams. (“Hehe, oral.” “Shut the fuck up won’t you, Arthur?”) They get Theo to work with them as the scorekeeper. She gets a good percentage of the questions right (80%) but she still does not feel confident enough about it. She turns back to work on her laptop with Theo sipping coffee by her side as Arthur leaves to go on a dinner date with said sweet skirt from Monday. Theo repeats the joke, and this time Arthur says, “And what if it is?” They do not know if he is joking, at this point.
When their usual time to go has struck, Theo closes the book in front of him and stretches a little, bending his neck side to side. She turns to him and frowns.
“Look, I know I asked you yesterday we could do the book club today but… can we just skip it to next week instead? I’m really fried after today.”
“That’s fine,” he says, but then pauses. “You work too hard. I didn’t really expect to do it today.” He sips from his already-cold mug of coffee.
“Hey, I actually wanted to do it, alright? I just—I’m writing a short paper on 19th century literature right now” she answers. “For my portfolio. I’m submitting it as an extra right after the exam, and I want it done so I can focus on studying for the exam afterward.”
So that’s why she’s been typing away on her laptop with not much pause after Arthur left. “Portfolio?” he narrows his eyes. “Applying for something?”
“Yeah, the OSR’s scholarship.”
“The international one.”
“Yeah, that one,” she confirms. “I’ve been waiting for a bit for them to reveal the requirements and… I don’t know, it feels like it gets longer and more strict every year. I’m trying to up my chances by having a strong portfolio.”
“I see.” Theo pauses, takes in the disappointment still apparent on her face, and sighs. “Look, if you still want to do the book club—we can do it while we walk home.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really,” he nods. “So if you’re tired, then pack up and let’s go. Schiet op.”
“Geez, just give me a sec!”
--
By the time she and Theo make their way out of the café, the sun is long out of the sky, the street lit in a beautiful shade of warm yellow from the streetlamps. The both of them live roughly in the same area of town—at the southeast residential side, but pretty close to the center, where the café is—but their houses are still around 20 minutes apart by foot. There is, however, the main boulevard that connects their ways home up until a certain point, so they decide to make the most of it by walking the 30 minutes up to that fork in the road even if she did technically have her bike with her.
“Okay, so, book talk, huh?” she says, digging into her bag to find the Kerouac he’d lent her. His copy of On the Road had weathered down rather beautifully over the years; the paper a shade of yellow just right for the eyes, no mottling of the pages, and despite the red matter cover being dog-eared and slightly faded, it’s the kind that’s endearing—the kind a book gets after being held well while being read, and then being kept away so lovingly. With the book in her hands now, she looks near hesitant to even part with the book at all. “Kerouac… was one hell of a read.”
He takes the book she hands back and thumbs it carefully. “What do you think about it?”
“I actually don’t know where to begin,” she says, staring off at the road beyond them. “The contrast of them going to these vast empty places to fill something deep in them...” She sighs, a happy sigh coming out of her. By this point, Theo already knows the kind of face she makes when she’s remembering the hours she spent reading the book—the expression she has right now betrayed that. “And then they were always—well, as with the title I guess—I felt like they were always on the road, even if not literally, then within them?”
Theo nods. “Always going somewhere unknown.”
“Yeah, for sure. It’s not like they were not established right, just that… there were so many possibilities you know? They were talking about crossing America and going from here to there and they seemed to… change with every landscape they went in. And it was exactly all those possibilities that were so fun. You definitely hit that request of mine, because I’m 100% sure all that going away made me want to go away again.” She takes a deep breath. “It’s kinda sad though, that things won’t be as mysterious as back then.” She waves her hand. “What with social media and all.”
“The insight that comes with travel is different now that the world is more connected to one another.”
“And the connection is so accessible!” she notes “Like, one of us can go away but it’s not the end of the world? We can still talk if we wanted to, there are so many ways to do it. And that’s great, but now… now when you go away it doesn’t feel as spiritual an experience? I mean, you can easily Google what a place looks like and…”
Theo turns to her after she abruptly stops. “And what?”
A beat. Two. She hasn’t stopped walking, with her eyes facing in front of her, but her eyebrows are narrowed like she’s carefully choosing how to put what she’s thinking into words. Theo patiently waits throughout the full minute it takes her to speak. “…Do you ever feel like you’re only a visitor in a certain place? Or maybe even anywhere. Like you’re only meant to be there for a few days, a month, maybe a year, but—never in the long term, never for the rest of your life.”
That… isn’t what he was expecting.
But then again, he doesn’t really know what to expect with her around, at this point.
Things are always more than with her.
For a moment, Theo ponders. Sure, he’s had instances feeling uncomfortable in the places he’s in, or maybe acknowledging that there are better places to be—such as when he left their hometown to go here, to follow his brother—but he hasn’t really thought about the rest of it. He’s always imagined the tides would just bring him to places, and he wouldn’t have to work hard to be brought elsewhere; to just let himself be washed ashore to new islands.
“I’m not sure,” he answers, thumbing the side of On the Road once more. He wonders what it was like during Kerouac’s generation—dreaming of a spiritual journey, going out there and exploring the unknown, how so much was left to be learned. How will his generation be remembered? What difference will they make, will they go down in history?
She nods simply. “It’s okay, I’m just the kind of person who likes to think about all this. Sal’s changing views on Dean was… I don’t know how to put it, it’s just like being in a different place, having a different experience with people changes the way you see about them, even if that place is… geographically, and not like a situation. Does that make sense?”
“You have to admit, most of the book doesn’t make sense,” Theo notes.
“…I did hear Kerouac wrote a good portion of it pretty high.”
“Maybe it’ll make sense when you read it high, too.”
They grin at each other, and Theo turns to get the Neruda book out from his bag.
“I’m so close to memorizing the content of this book, with how many times I read it,” he admits, passing the volume over to her. They touch fingers for only the briefest of moments. “Neruda has an interesting way with words.”
She nods. “I still feel bad that I don’t get to read him in his original Spanish because I feel like that makes a difference. The translations are still pretty good though. Any poem you liked particularly?”
“Maybe I Remember You as You Were.”
“Oooh, that’s very romantic,” she says, flipping right to the page he was talking about. “Bonfire of awe in which my thirst was burning.”
“Sweet blue hyacinth twisted over my soul,” he continues. “The passion in some of his love poems get overwhelming sometimes. I remember You is just the right touch of romance and longing I like in a Neruda.”
“Hmm?” She turns to him curiously. “Mayhaps you’ve already been a Neruda fan from the start?”
“I’ve read him in the past, yes.”
That’s not that surprising, really, considering how much of a household name Pablo Neruda is to literary enthusiasts at this point. One of the more “modern” classics of poetry, arguably. She’s not satisfied with his answer, of course. “Which, pray tell, is your favorite?”
It takes him a moment, biting the inside of his cheek in thought. After a beat, he answers, “Don’t Go Far Off.”
“And you say you’re not a romantic,” she says while shaking her head.
“I am not a romantic.”
“Theo, I know the poem by heart. You can’t tell me that shit isn’t romantic.”
Every minute he spends with her, the more drops of confusion fall onto his mind about himself. And not the bad kind; simply, why is it that she can see him so differently compared to others? What is it about her that she catches what sneaks past others?
He wouldn’t call the poem romantic, but maybe if she says it…
No. Instead, he looks at her. Challenges her. “Prove it.”
“Okay, you start.”
He takes a deep breath before beginning. “Don’t go far off, not even for a day, because—”
“Because—I don’t know how to say it: a day is long and I will be waiting for you.” She doesn’t miss a beat when she answers.
He continues. “As in an empty station when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep.”
The way she traces the sounds of the syllables so delicately, like it would shatter if she wasn’t careful with their sound, isn’t missed by him. Does she read all poetry, all literature with this much adoration? “Don’t leave me, even for an hour, because then the little drops of anguish will all run together.”
At this point, Theo is already nodding, very much impressed. “The smoke that roams looking for a home will drift—"
(And together, they say) “Into me, choking my lost heart.”
The two of them look at each other quietly, the poem’s imagery settling in the spaces between them.
In a way that makes them feel content.
He continues. “Oh, may your silhouette never dissolve on the beach; may your eyelids never flutter into the empty distance.”
“Don’t leave me for a second, my dearest.”
“Because in that moment you'll have gone so far.”
“I'll wander mazily,” she breathes, “over all the earth, asking—”
Theo sighs. “Will you come back? Will you leave me here, dying?”
With that, the two of them relish in the silence at the end of the poem, letting it all dissolve into the air like the puffs of smoke from their breath.
“Nice of you to know that start to finish,” Theo says, by way of compliment.
She makes a little mock-bow with her skirt. “Thank you. I also really like that poem as well, actually.”
For some minutes, the two of them share a companionable silence, the moon shining over them, casting a silver glow. It is only when the itch to ask the question becomes too much that Theo finally opens his mouth.
“Why are you so fixated on going away?” he asks.
She stares at him. “What?”
“You’re always talking about the out there and the going away. And now you’re planning to leave for a scholarship—when you get in,” he says. “Have a boner for it?”
She makes a face. “No, what the hell,” she says. “Is it so bad to want a little adventure when you live in such a small town like this?”
“Not really,” he hums. “You strike me as the kind of person who disappears from everyone because you’re chasing something far off into the unknown,” he says.
She opens her mouth, about to say something, before she takes a deep breath to hold it back in. Theo feels like he’s overstepped a boundary he shouldn’t have. But instead of talking back at him or refuting, she says, “That would be a great story for a small Literature major like me, huh?”
It’s a non-answer.
The one Theo knows means there’s a more complex answer—that she’s not just ready to tell him yet.
It’s alright.
He can wait.
A few more minutes pass, this time in comfortable silence. Theo considers small talk, about the bookstore, or Vincent and Arthur, but she looks so deep in thought he decides not too. Sooner than he would have liked, they reach the fork in the road. He stops and turns to her fully.
“Books?”
She blinks as if torn away from a daydream. “Oh right, books. Nearly forgot.”
The two of them pull out the books to exchange from their respective bags; she catches the title The Night Circus in the one he hands her, another dog-eared, well-loved, black book; and she also catches the twitch of his eyebrow in interest when she hands him Atwood’s Dearly.
They keep their books away and fall back into their usual quiet.
“You sure I don’t need to walk you home?”
“It’s a well-lit road. I’ll be fine,” she insists. “I can bike from here to there, it’ll take me three minutes tops.”
He nods, the smallest of smiles on his face. “I’ll see you around, then. I hope you enjoy the book."
--
This isn’t the first time Theo has lent her a book. And this isn’t the last time Theo will lend her a book, either—if there’s anything about their kind-of friendship she knows for sure, it’s that he’ll need to try harder to get rid of her if he doesn’t like the company.
But somehow, the arrival of the new book in her small, rented dorm room leaves her unbalanced. She knows she has better things to do like her essay for the portfolio and studying for the exam—80% correct for the oral test is pretty good, but not good enough—but she lets the book taunt her anyway.
It is Saturday now, and she places it on her desk with the cover facing up, black and red and white with an intricate illustration of figures. Is it because of the conversation they had last night? It wasn’t odd for their little book discussions to wander into personal territory, because it is true that the way we read books is very much influenced by the things we have experienced in real life, but that one… that felt different. Somehow, it’s as if the both of them had opened up a pandora’s box of—well, something, and all of that is nestled in between the pages of the lent book.
It wasn’t like her wanting to go away was a secret in any way, shape, or form. Friendship with Theo or not, she was meant to leave this place. Or at least, that what she likes to believe. She’s pretty sure she’s mentioned even in the past that this town is too small for her; too little; there is a wider world out there to discover. And it wasn’t like Theo being some sort of hidden romantic was a surprise either—she’s known from the moment he didn’t stop asking her for poetry books. Nothing new was really uncovered last night, but then…
Why can’t she seem to let it go?
Her eyes rest back to the book on her desk. She said she wouldn’t read it until after the oral exam on Tuesday at the very least, but—she has peered into it the night before as she was going to bed, and yet once more this morning.
She’s not sure what it is about yet, but it seems that he’s lent her some sort of fantasy-romance, because she had asked for a book with a magic system in it. (Thinking about the wonders of magic is a great stress-reliever in the midst of exams.) She had expected Theo to be a good level of well-read because he worked at the Hoard—but somehow, he was always blowing away her expectations. Theo is always saying about how weird she is for pursuing him, but isn’t he the weirder one? At least she shows no pretense of being any sort of normal. He does his best to look put together.
Did that big looming man look like the kind of person who would read a novel title The Night Circus?
Not really, not to her. But it’s because he is that kind of person that keeps her so hooked, so interesting. She doesn’t quite know what has happened yet, but—whatever it was that unlocked between the both of them last night, it can’t be that bad. So by 3:00pm, when she said she would be running through drills for her exam, she closes her laptop shut, makes herself some tea, and curls up into her armchair to read.
--
Just because they get along with each other doesn’t mean they agree with everything.
For example, she’s explained that she’s the kind of person who marathon-reads whatever she can get her hands on, if she finds it interesting enough. It’s not that she doesn’t have patience for reading; she does, and she thoroughly enjoys being lost in a good book. It’s just that she can’t do what the others do when they like a book—read it leisurely, enjoy it from page to page, taste every word like it’s sweet. She’s more of the kind who sits down at eight in the morning with a interesting book and being unable to stand until it’s done in the afternoon. There is no waiting in her vocabulary, only the going.
Oppositely, Theo likes to take his time with his books, the same way one would do a walk. Take the scenic route; enjoy the scenery, take in all the details with your sense. To Theo, reading a book is going into it, getting lost in between the world that is hiding in its pages, and there is no need to rush that. The book is not going anywhere, and he can always open it up and return to where he’d stopped. Theo rarely reads books in one go unless he’s in a rush to do it, like say in a required reading for a class.
So when he sends her a message on Sunday, saying,
[ 9:44 | Theo ] Good book choice this week. Had fun with it
less than 48 hours from the moment she had given him the book…
She yells.
Really loudly. Her next door neighbor pounds on the wall between them, and she shouts out a “sorry!” as she begins typing on her phone.
[ 9:43 ] You finished it already?
[ 9:44 | Theo ] Is that so surprising?
[ 9:44 ] 😊 You don’t understand how happy I am rn
[ 9:45 | Theo ] It’s just a book, relax.
[ 9:45 ] Yea sure but don’t you read slowly on purpose? Kinda thrilled you liked it enough to polish it in one go.
She pauses, hand hovering over her phone, before she writes out another message.
[ 9:46 ] Thanks for telling me. This has def made my day.
And it takes a minute for him to reply, but then he returns:
[ 9:47 | Theo ] Isn’t this what friends do?
Well, let’s say that something in her belly does a flip, and—
It makes her feel weightless.

Happy Meet and Greet Monday! What would your other OCs say about your MCs ability to stay cool under pressure?
thanks for the ask!
I think Tempest has a high opinion of Aella’s capacity to look after herself (it obviously depends on the circumstance, but Tempest knows she raised a badass who can stand up for herself)
Theo sees Aella’s vulnerable side more often, so he’s aware that she’s not unflappable - she’s claustrophobic and struggles to stay cool in those situations... and even though Aella doesn’t want Tempest to know and hasn’t told her, she knows as well, or at least suspects.
That said, Theo also thinks Aella is amazing and in terms of a fight, has a high opinion of her capacity to stay cool there. bc everything she does that involves fighting and the like makes him go 😱😍 (our boy is head over heels for her okay)
bonus: Theo is mostly not super chill under pressure but he’s surprisingly good at witty comebacks. Tempest is very cool under pressure, especially in a fight.

[ARTICLE] IDOLS PREPARING FOR FIRST ANNUAL BUSAN SUMMER FESTIVAL
In conjunction with BC Entertainment, Dimensions Entertainment, Gold Star Media, and SBS, the city of Busan has announced the first annual Busan Summer Festival, taking place from July 9th to July 13th. A number of local events will occur over the span of the festival, but the main attraction will be the entertainment, bringing top celebrities to the city over the course of the week.
The main events of the festival will be a series of three concerts bringing together top idols and artists for three fun summer Night On The Beach concerts featuring some of the hottest hits of the past decade, but fans can also meet these idols throughout the week, as they’ll be hosting festivities and giving back to the Busan community.
The three companies and SBS have released a joint statement saying that through this festival, they hope to celebrate the lively and bustling community of Busan and all the idols have expressed excitement for the festival.
All three of the festival concerts will be filmed and aired on SBS later in the summer.
ADMIN NOTES:
The time has come for our next drop event! Everyone under the three companies will be required to participate in their respective concert part of the festival barring extenuating circumstances such as major injury or illness. It must be cleared with the admin if you want your muse to have a plot that will keep them from participating in this event.
EVENT DETAILS:
The Busan Summer Festival takes place in-universe from July 9th to July 13th. Please be aware that I’ve moved this event forward from when I initially intended it to go up, so there have been slight changes in the schedules of Knight, Alien, Impulse, and Gold Star Soloist 3, all of whom have just had concerts pushed back a couple of days. This is only an OOC change, and in-universe, this will have always been scheduled that way.
There are two parts to the festival that may be used for interactions: work time and free time. For the festival, idols will travel back and forth from Seoul to Busan with their manager every day they are scheduled. On days only individual members of groups are scheduled, only those members are required travel to Busan, but others may come to explore the festival as a guests. Any promotional activities taking place on the days of the festival will be scheduled before traveling or pre-recorded on another day. All idols may visit the festival as a guest when they’re not working.
Outside of the idol’s scheduled work, the festival will also have food, shopping, local performers, etc., and anything typical of a summer fair or festival.
For the concerts, all idols will perform in summer wear regardless of concept (boys in board shorts and t-shirts, girls in denim shorts and tank tops) to match the beach and summer themes of the concert. The concert set lists can be found HERE.
Idols are highly encouraged by their companies to promote the festival through social media, but should also be on their best behavior at all times, whether working or not. They’re still in public and are bound by their image maintenance agreements at all times as usual.
CHOICE ACTIVITIES:
There are open events on the schedule listed below open to individual muses. This Google Form has been set up for you to submit up to two activities of your choice for each of your muses to have them scheduled in those spots. All spots will be first come-first served. More spots will be added if necessary, or more choice activities will be permitted per muse if necessary to fill the majority of the slots. Keep in mind that canonically, companies would have final say in where their idols are scheduled, so you can request activities that your muse wouldn’t enjoy doing! These are completely optional, but participating in these choice activities will give you more opportunities for points!
OVERALL:
In game, this event takes place Monday, July 9, to Friday, July 13, but threads and other posts for this event may be started from Sunday, July 1, at the time this post goes up, to Saturday, July 21, at 11:59PM EDT. Threads may be continued past the end date, but must be started before then. Non-event related interactions may of course be conducted during this time as well.
NOTE: All posts related to the event should be tagged #fmdbusanfest.

Yay!! You are back,I’ve missed you on my dash, and I missed dragging our dude Kurt🤣I hope finals go great!! I died at Kim&Theo wanting a sequel, please don’t!!And even less with Nero&Wendy lol,I’m sure Sutter will come up with some infuriating shit,no sequels thank you very much😂If I remember correctly they are gonna do s3ep1 this week, which have one of my favourite Tara scenes❤️I’m🙈bc Sutter said today Jax is the best character he is ever written and Charlie the best actor and friend, please🤣!!!He actually talked J/T today, something about Jax liking his partner to be on the right side,to balance all the wrong in his life, and he was talking about Tara bc he posted a pic of them!I didn’t understand the Q tbh and I would say Sutter did’t either🤣I liked what he said though,bc I always thought he liked Tara in part bc she was different from the girls who were around the clubhouse🤷♀️
Yes!! Thank you so much, I’ve missed shit taking Kurt with all of you 🤣! I’m almost down and my next class starts Monday, which shouldn’t interrupt our convos. 💕! Seriously! If accept a First 9 sequel only because there would be no Gemma and no happy family Nero and Wendy 🙄. No sequels please!! Yes! I’m gonna listen to it tomorrow, I hope it’s just as good as the last ep! Sutter is trying so hard to be Charlie’s friend 🤣. It’s so funny too because idk why he’s kissing ass, Charlie will never see it! Lol someone told me about the Q and Sutter definitely didn’t understand it 🤣. I think they were referring to some lame joke he said to Colette. I will gladly accept the J/T content though, even though he was just posting about Winsome last week 🤔. I’m surprised he said anything about J/T honestly! Absolutely!! Tara was different than the people who surrounded the club life! She also so Jax as Jax and not the heir to the MC throne!

After being named in the starting line-up for Mikel Arteta’s first official game in charge against Bournemouth, Reiss Nelson would undoubtedly have been delighted with the Spaniard taking over from Unai Emery on a permanent basis. Watch Arsenal Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below A new boss can give everyone a fresh slate to impress, and Nelson was once again given the opportunity to shine against Leeds on Monday night. Having gone in 0-0 at the break, it was the England U21 international who scored the only goal of the game to help the Gunners edge past Marcelo Bielsa’s Championship side to move into the fourth round of the FA Cup. How much do you remember about football in 2019? Our quiz will test your knowledge… And after seeing his display, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the 5 foot 9 winger, with a few suggesting that the goal would do his confidence the world of good. Nelson needed that! Still don’t think he’s @premierleague quality yet but will be in a couple of years Next season at a club like Leeds would do him wonders! #AFC — Josh Hoban (@MrJHoban) 6 January 2020 You could see as soon as nelson got the goal he looked so much better. Hopefully this gives him more confidence going forward — Henry W. (@WalterAFC_) 6 January 2020 Reiss Nelson slowly grew into the game, happy he got his goal. You could see when combining with players, the intelligence was there. — C (@AFC_Carys) 6 January 2020 A couple of fans however were quick to point out that Nelson’s balance didn’t look right at all, with the 20-year-old struggling to stay on his feet on occasion and slipping to the ground in promising positions. Nelson the match winner in the end but someone needs to speak to him about his balance or his boots the kid is like bambi on ice — Rudy (@RudyAFC) 6 January 2020 Nelson has no balance — Canadian Gooner (@Xhakazette29) 6 January 2020 Another couple of fans of the north London side hoped he could improve his composure, with one supporter in particular urging him not to overthink it like former Arsenal star Theo Walcott. Nelson was good overall, just needs more composure and play with his instincts a bit more, stop overthinking it a la Walcott. There is a player there. #afc — Adi Meiri #WeCareDoYou (@MeiriAdi) 6 January 2020 Nelson needs to learn to stay on his feet more, he has the pace to beat defenders but he keeps falling over and he lacks composure on the ball. Well done with the goal — Aisha (@AishaSharu) 6 January 2020 Final thought, which is a weird one considering he scored: I just dunno if Nelson will ever have the killer instinct in front of goal. He’s young yes, but you have to say Martinelli already looks a much more well rounded threat. Hopefully Arteta can work some magic on RN — Joe Mc (@JPMc99) 6 January 2020 With Arsenal’s squad lacking real out-and-out wingers at the moment – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a natural striker, is operating out on the left at the moment – there is a real opening for Nelson to really make his mark at the Emirates this season. The academy product will no doubt get some much-needed game time under Arteta thanks to the Gunners’ involvement in three competitions, and if he can add some goals to his game like he did against Leeds, then he could become a permanent fixture sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, Arsenal fans react to their transfer interest in this proven Premier League ace. #ReissNelson #FaCup #MikelArteta

The Met Gala on Monday night provided plenty of razzle-dazzle, in the form of four-act outfit changes, spooky disembodied heads, $500,000 worth of ruby nipples, and some savvy inversion of the “Camp: Notes on Fashion” theme by Frank Ocean and Kanye. The watches, rightfully so, did not headline the night—but there were plenty of very cool, very expensive, maybe-not-so-camp timepieces at fashion’s biggest night. Speaking of which: can watches even be camp? Well, people spend tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars on items that are basically obsolete. That breed of over-the-top seriousness is 100% camp.
Rabbani and Solimene Photography
Colin Kaepernick’s Hublot Classic Fusion
Colin Kaepernick wore a quartet of gold aquatic-themed rings (a crab, a shell, a catfish) to the Met Gala, so he was covered when it came to flashy jewelry. Kerby Jean-Raymond told Hypebeast the whole look was inspired by references Kaepernick and his girlfriend Nessa sent him of “kings, queens, pharaohs and reflections of African tradition.” He added, “At the last minute I got Colin to wear those rings.” Kaep’s all-black Hublot was probably purposeful, too: the colorway is called “Black Magic.”
ANGELA WEISS
Serena Williams’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
“The hallmark of Camp is the spirit of extravagance,” Susan Sontag wrote in the night’s guiding essay “Notes on Camp.” Maybe no watch better embodied that spirit than Serena Williams’s Royal Oak. There isn’t a single centimeter on the surface of this watch that isn’t covered in diamonds, 1,135 in total.
John Shearer
Tom Brady’s IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Edition “150 Years”
So maybe Tom Brady didn’t “get” the theme, but he wore one hell of a watch. This IWC timepiece includes a perpetual calendar, moon phase indications for both the northern and southern hemispheres, and an 18-carat gold case. It’s rare, too: there are only 250 of these watches in the world. This is a piece worth breaking the theme for. Brady’s outfit begs a good question: Why be camp when you can instead show off a really fantastic watch?

21 Savage’s Richard Mille RM-055 “Bubba Watson”
Dapper Dan told GQ that 21 Savage’s kingly black and gold jacket is a tribute to “the golden age” of hip hop. “When you see the gold and black that I encouraged him to use, all that is a holdover from the streets,” Dap said. “Everyone on the streets wants to be shiny, they want gold, and the outfit he’s wearing is a reflection of that.” And nothing says shiny like one of Richard Mille’s way-over-the-top watches.
Raymond Hall
Rami Malek’s Cartier Tank MC
Rami Malek—pardon me, Oscar winner Rami Malek—wore a jumbo-sized version of Cartier’s classic Tank to the Met Gala. According to Cartier, the intention of the MC watch is to bring “a resolutely masculine edge” to the brand’s signature design. Making something perfect even bigger? That’s camp, baby!
Ray Tamarra
Odell Beckham Jr.’s Richard Mille RM-030
At his Thom Browne fitting on Sunday night, dressed in his Met Gala kilt, Beckham wore a Richard Mille with an orange strap. He admitted that the shade didn’t go well with the rest of his outfit. So what does a dynasty-building wide receiver pair with a kilt and a tux jacket with the sleeves ripped off? Another Richard Mille—in matching black, of course.
Theo Wargo
Michael B. Jordan’s Piaget Altiplano 900P
Michael B. Jordan’s Piaget has been in a long fight for supremacy in the watch world. When the Altiplano 900P was introduced in 2013, it was the thinnest mechanical watch in the world. It lost that record when Bulgari released a 5.15-millimeter watch in 2017. But Piaget came back swinging the next year with a new Altiplano that measured only 4.3 millimeters—just a hair more than two stacked nickels stacked—to reclaim the featherweight champion of the world belt.
James Bond Himself Stepped Out in the James Bondiest Watch Imaginable
Colin Kaepernick, Serena Williams, and Rami Malek Wore Wildly Good Watches to Fashion’s Wildest Night The Met Gala on Monday night provided plenty of razzle-dazzle, in the form of four-act outfit changes, spooky disembodied heads, $500,000 worth of ruby nipples, and some savvy inversion of the “Camp: Notes on Fashion” theme by Frank Ocean and Kanye.

the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
ikemen vampire: temptation through the dark theo van gogh / mc | T | [ ao3 link in bio ]

CHAPTER 9 OF 22
You will let my tender hook Catch the folded darkness inside you, let me occupy The dented place at the base of your throat. - "One Life", Carlomar Arcangel Daoana
--
She wakes up late.
Comically late.
No hangover, thank god—but it’s 11am and she’s dressed in lent pajamas in a bed that isn’t her own. She shoots up to sitting position in a second, and standing in a minute, trudging out the room to the bathroom at the end of the hall.
By the time she’s up and out of the room, a little more awake, Dazai and Arthur have already long gone, the only remnants of their presence the bit of glitter that they had wiped onto the sofa they nestled in.
And text messages.
She squints when she reads it, not because she had a hard time reading what it said, but—because she couldn’t believe what it said.
A series of text messages from Dazai:
[ 7:23 | Dazai ] ur still asleep but ur friend kinda hot
[ 7:24 | Dazai ] ofc I woke up first but his eyelashes tho???
[ 8:32 | Dazai ] pls tell me he’s not a douche bc im rly gonna jump him
[ 9:03 | Dazai ] mgonna jump him
[ 10:19 | Dazai ] abt to find out if he’s got the magnum sized dong u promised
Oh, god, what has she done.
With a groan, she heads down the hallway, phone securely in the pocket of the sweatpants, to see Vincent and Theo preparing a meal in the kitchen; Theo preparing some sort of fillet (fish? Chicken?) and Vincent frying some onions and garlic on the stove, filling the kitchen with a nice aroma.
“Good morning,” she says softly, as she shuffles onto one of the dining table chairs.
“Thought you died,” Theo says with a snort; but once he turns around to face her, all derision goes away in his face and is replaced by a quiet surprise.
Vincent beams as he turns to get the fillets from Theo. (It’s chicken.) “Good morning. Did you sleep well? No headache?”
She shakes her head. “Nope, I’m good. Thanks for letting me sleep here last night and for the clothes.”
“Of course, no problem at all,” Vincent answers, turning back to the pan. The chicken makes a sizzle as it meets the oil.
Theo is still staring at her with an odd look on his face.
“Earth to Theo?” she calls out, waving her hand in front of her. “Something wrong?”
“Broer. Why did you lend her my clothes.”
Oh.
“You know how most my shirts are, paint-stained in all the weird places.”
She feels the cling of the cotton around her skin so differently, so suddenly. Oh.
“She wouldn’t have minded, she was drunk.”
That’s correct, but—
Vincent smiles at Theo, the kind of smile one makes when they can see through someone; she’s filled with a kind of relief at knowing that Vincent can do that to Theo. Maybe the man isn’t an impenetrable a character after all. “No need to be shy, Theo.”
“I am not,” he insists, finally tearing his gaze away from her and heading to the sink to wash the used chopping board and the knife. “I just don’t want her wearing my stuff.”
She smirks. He is shy. True, she didn’t get the opportunity to think about what she was putting on last night because she was so tired and knocked out by the alcohol, but…if that was the price she had to pay to see this side of Theo she doesn’t have the opportunity to witness often, then it was worth it. Oh, the ever put-together Theo, brought to his knees by only one person in the world, the one he trusts the most: his brother. “Is it because your personality is contagious?” she teases, “wouldn’t want to catch that.”
He answers her with a glare. “Reverse. It’s your stupidity that’s contagious.”
“Oh, we’re pretty much equally as stupid, Theo. No need to worry.”
“We are not,” he says, and then Vincent elbows him carefully.
“You really should be a little gentler to your friends,” Vincent comments, as he turns the fillet onto its other side.
Theo grumbles something unintelligible and it makes her laugh. Sitting in the kitchen, watching the two brothers side by side with their back to her as they prepare—she checks the clock—lunch for the three of them, she hums, content. She’s lived alone for all her life here in the campus, and it was one she looked forward to after living in a house crammed with people for most of her life. But sitting here, watching them share the chores and maybe have a little banter with each other—makes her reconsider that maybe, maybe settling down in even the worst of places isn’t that horrible when you’re in good company.
Theo opens the plate cupboard and hands her a set of it with some cutlery. “Set the table at least, freeloader?” He says, though his voice lacks all the venom his words otherwise had.
Okay, she’ll have to reconsider if Theo counts as “good company.”
--
Theo barely survives lunch with her and his brother because of how much he gets teased by the two. He might argue that this is worse than being stuck with her and Arthur because since it is Vincent, he does not get the leeway to have a comeback, only able to grumble in displeasure at being see-through. They stuff their bellies not only with Vincent’s famed chicken with herbs but also with a hefty amount of laughter.
She slides back (slightly disgusted) into her costume to walk back home in, confident that many other students will be trudging along the streets suffering the same fate. (“Not everyone wakes up as late as you.” “There’s bound to be at least one, right?”) When she comes out of the bathroom, there’s a book on top of his neatly-folded clothes.
They speak at the same time.
“I could wash these first before giving it back if you—” “You had that with you all this time?”
Silence.
She breaks it with a laugh. “Yeah, it was a Saturday. I didn’t want to break the schedule.”
“You get so thorough about the weirdest things,” he comments, but he takes the bundle in her arms anyway. “It’s alright, I’ll have them. Let me get you a book, too.”
She follows Theo into the studio, where he crouches in front of some bookshelves. Vincent peeps from behind his easel. “You should walk her home,” he offers, as Theo pulls a few books out of the shelf.
“No, it’s alright, I’ll be fine! I’m not drunk or dizzy. The walk will help clear my head.”
“It’s twenty minutes out,” Theo points out, getting up.
“Just promise that if you find me asleep on the street you’ll pick me up?”
Handing Murakami’s Dance, Dance, Dance to her, Theo grins. “I can’t promise that.”
“Oh, Theo, you know you will.”
Even when she is long out of his sight, the smile on his face does not go away. Even as the day shifts into mundanity. Even as he’s carting a bagful of clothes to the launderette. Even as he picks up some groceries on the way home. Even as he prepares dinner for Vincent, who is a few hours deep into painting.
Maybe for a moment, it goes away, but—
He thinks of her and the smile comes back full force.
--
She spends the rest of Sunday recovering and hiding away in her room after the very socially draining party, but by Monday she’s hopped onto her bike and headed for the literature club’s little gazebo. She’s left a message for Dazai, asking for company. Sure, they spent quite a lot of time together in the past week, after having jumped through thrift stores and boutiques for the perfect Night Circus costume (and yes, she made him read the book beforehand too, for good measure) but Saturday was quite a day. She’s brought a couple of cookies for sharing with him, sitting at their usual spot, looking out at the quadrangle next to it.
“Toshiko-san! Sorry we kept you waiting!”
The plural takes her off guard, and she turns to find that Dazai has brought a rather distracted-looking Isaac along, his hands in the pockets of his slacks. Isaac is always dressed so well—she supposes it’s part of the uniform or something of being seen as a respectable professor—but she sure does want to see him dress down once. T-shirt, shorts, that kind—Isaac seems to take everything too seriously.
The pleasant feeling of seeing a friend she hasn’t met up with in a long time is quickly replaced by confusion, as the science complex is nowhere near the Arts building. “Nice to see you here, Isaac,” she says, but also with the lilt of a question.
Dazai answers said question. “He’s here because he has nothing better to do, so I asked him to come.”
Isaac makes a face that’s both resignation and panic. “He passed by my office.” –and dragged me out because he wouldn’t take no for an answer, she finishes in her head.
“I see,” she answers, even though that’s not really an explanation in itself.
She knows Isaac through Dazai, and Dazai knows Isaac through a very peculiar class: Occultism 101.
A class team-taught by three major colleges in the university—the College of Arts, the College of Science, and the College of Social Sciences—Occultism 101 is one of the more controversial classes on campus because of its nature. It goes through a long history of the evolution and persistence of supernatural beliefs and practices among nations in the world, in that nice gray area between religion and science. There are only two kinds of students in Occultism 101: those who believe and who are genuinely interested, and those who do not believe and would like to spend an entire semester saying “bah! That’s not true!” to themselves all the time.
Occultism 101 is typically taught by professors from the College of Social Sciences and College of Arts with backgrounds in religious practices and other mystical behavior (whether in history or art), and then occasionally, in the middle of the semester, guest lecturers from the College of Science come in to give lectures on how these “supernatural events” may be explainable through scientific means. Say, how the piping system in a building can cause haunted “cold spots”, or how floating dust particles can come up in a photograph as “orbs”, or the likes.
And she doesn’t want to be very stereotypical about it, but a lot of people in the College of Science are pretty… well, square, and so no one really wants to teach Occultism 101, even if it’s only a few meetings in a semester. This is how this job ends up to unwilling, no-choice Ph.D. students such as Isaac.
It was just his luck that Dazai was in the section he taught.
“So, Osamu, care to tell us about your little date last Sunday?” she asks, as the other two have taken their seats across her. Dazai swoons a little at the mention of Sunday. Isaac looks at him with unsureness.
(Isaac has had the miserable experience of being the victim of Dazai’s flirtation at some point in time. One can see how that has instead simmer into a rather tentative friendship. All is well.)
Dazai rests his elbows on the table and places his chin on the palms of his hands. “He’s so dreamy.”
“No he isn’t,” she swiftly replies, without thought.
But Dazai pretends not to have heard it. “He’s not looking for a serious relationship though,” he adds. “Not that I am, either.”
“You aren’t?”
“No, sweetie,” Dazai explains. “But he’s my type and I’m his type and we couldn’t just leave it at that so I have his number now, and a little… arrangement.”
The word hangs in between them, swaying.
Oh no, that’s not any good. “What arrangement.”
“You don’t need to sound so concerned.”
“This is Arthur we’re talking about,” she insists, and the name makes Isaac flinch a little.
“Doyle, the med student?” Isaac asks, and she turns to him, blinking.
“You know him?” Remembering Arthur during the party, her mouth falls into a small o. “He knows you too, doesn’t he?”
Isaac scoffs. “Who in this university doesn’t?” Arthur’s pretty well-known to be a flirt. Something like having a checklist of bedding at least one person in every department—a rumor that would have been a little more shameful if the rumors also didn’t say how he was so good at it.
She nods. “Well, fair enough.”
“No, no, he’s an absolute sweetheart to me, so it’s definitely a you problem,” Dazai insists. “It’s just a friendship with benefits, yanno?” He emphasizes every of the following syllables with his tone and his hands: “Nice, big, hefty benefits.”
And even Isaac, who usually refrains from commenting no matter how much he has to say, has to quip with “Terrible choice, really.”
And she has to agree. “I respect you, but not your taste, Osamu.”
Dazai grins. “Understandable.” He picks up one of the sandwiches she’s prepared. “You make it sound like I’m the only one making bad decisions though.”
“Excuse me?”
He turns to Isaac. “You should have gone to the Halloween party. She brought her little boy toy.”
She scoffs. “He is not my boy toy.”
“You sure do have him around your finger though, getting in matching costumes and all that,” Dazai says. “Spends Saturdates with him all the time.”
The only strategy that will work in times like these is straight-up ignoring him. “Anyway—” she begins, about to steer the conversation away when Isaac speaks up.
“It’s nice to hear you’re getting close to other people,” he says softly. Isaac has a way of speaking that makes it always seem like he’s spent so much time thinking about what he said before he actually said it; so sometimes it’s hard to gauge if he’s saying it casually or entirely seriously.
So she blinks. “You make it seem like I have no friends, Isaac.”
“I-It’s not that!” he suddenly blurts. Ah, there. There’s the usual Isaac. “You’ve spent so much time focusing on your work lately, it’s nice to know you’re relaxing with other people sometimes.”
And he doesn’t say it, but she sure does hear it: the you haven’t been to the astronomy club in a while and it’s made me worried about you.
She doesn’t go religiously, but she used to attend fairly often to hang out with the other members and just look up at the stars. Isaac tries to organize at least two sessions in a month, one to look at the moon, and another to point at the stars. She hasn’t been able to catch them in a bit.
But then, slowly, as the image of the view outside the astronomy club’s hangout is refreshed in her mind, the way the physics building rooftop is just high enough to provide a good view of the rest of the campus below, the city downtown, just at the right place on campus that at night, the rest of the sprawling town’s streetlights trickle out like golden LED veins through the threes—an idea begins to implant itself into her head.
Taking root immediately.
She likes to go up here to think. She really shouldn’t have had permission to go up there on her own, in her free time, since they have rules about club hours and the likes, but Isaac is a close friend and gave her a spare key, so she can come and go as she pleases. And sure, the Grove is a nice, quiet place for book clubs and maybe doing homework if one doesn’t need an electric socket, but up here in the astronomy club’s “the Rooftop”, she feels like she can float away into the vast ocean of her thoughts and get lost in them for a moment.
She feels small up there. And that’s a good feeling.
She won’t tell it to Isaac’s face but it’s one of the primary reasons why she applied for the astronomy club in the first place. The stars are great no matter how dumb she is at physics, but the view—it’s really something else.
What does the world look like from the point of view of a star? How tiny are human lives in the vast expanse of the universe? How long have these stars been out there, how long will they stay out there, how much longer will they stay in this universe more than we will?
…This is why Theo teases her for being a literature major: all these goddamn metaphors.
And for a split second, she thinks…
Maybe it isn’t that bad to share that same quiet space with him?
…You know, to talk books.
“About that…”
Isaac and Dazai turn to her.
“Mind if I sneak in an outsider to the Roof?” she asks, facing Isaac with genuine hope in her voice.
