there are many things Wrong in thea von harbou's metropolis novel and i can't even begin to unpack all that, but from a characterization standpoint she really did Something with joh fredersen. his creed is "pain is sin so i refuse to be in pain, either for myself or those whose lives i ruin", he's a capitalist tyrant, he's a genius, he's a despicable human being, he's god according to everyone including the narrative, he controls everything and knows everything, he's a widower, his best and only friend is his worst enemy because he took the woman he loved from him. he lives in the tower of babel and built an entire city over catacombs. nobody has ever seen a human emotion on his face except his mother who hates him, his dead wife and his friend/nemesis. he's pushed himself so far away from humanity he can't see the faces of those he hurts, he can't see anyone else at all really. except his son. the only one who can question him and interrupt him is his son. the only one he'd leave his work for is his son. the only one he'd suffer for, despite the whole "pain is a sin" creed, is his son. "it's better to suffer than to lose him." he'd destroy the city he made so his son can rebuild it. he loves him so much he forgets he's a person. and the moment he ends up in danger because of him the carefully built facade drops. freder is in danger? forget my master plan, forget the fact my employees who fear me and think i'm god are seeing me cry and scream like a madman, forget "pain is a sin" because i've never felt pain like this in my life, i feel torn apart i don't know where my son is i need my son. "what happens is what i will" but when you're watching your son fight to the death with someone and you can do nothing except watch, you're just a father. von harbou really had god fall to his knees and beg for his child, had that be the moment when he broke and began to see his son's face in that of everyone around him, and expected me to be ok.

Tim posted screenshots from METROPOLIS back in Nov 22, 2019. As of Feb 10, 2023 it's still up there.
If the rumours are true and Apple has Sam Esmail helming a tv series with Timothee Chalamet in it then the world as we know it will change forever that wd be okay i guess 😅.
- Sam is a razor sharp writer (MR ROBOT) and intrepid filmmaker (COMET).
- And Apple's FOUNDATION shows they can do sci fi fantasy & adapt stories by updating them with just the right amount of respect.
- And given that Freder has that saviour thing going on as well, I cant wait to see how Tim makes him different from Paul Atreides.

I wonder if they might gender flip the story so that the rich kid rebel (Freder) is a woman and the working class saint (Maria) is a guy. Not for any reason other than those few minutes that the saint is shown as a seductress. And i think showing people getting whipped into a sexual frenzy over a woman is so eyerollingly cliche. Throw Timmy into that role and ... well... if ever there was a man who could seduce men and women into comitting sins... (Btw this film came out in 1927, nearly a century ago!!!!😲)
