I Still Loved Him

The phone rings; once, twice… seven times. It goes to voicemail.

Baby, I’m sorry; I shouldn’t have said those things to you, and I understand if you don’t want to be home right now. 

There’s a pause, as if she might say more. 

Just let me know if you’re safe. 

The line goes dead.

It rings again an hour later.

Hi Jeremy, it’s Mom again. I haven’t heard back from you, and I’m trying to give you space, but can you at least send me a text or something to let me know you’re okay? I still love you-

The line cuts off. 

The phone rings a total of seven times before going to voicemail. She counts them.

Jeremy I’m starting to worry, I called Ted’s mother and she said she hasn’t heard from you. Sweetheart, I’m so sorry; none of it was your fault that night.

There’s another pause, a breath, and then nothing.

The ringing drones in her ear like an orchestra by now.

Baby please, I never should have said that, it wasn’t your fault, and I’m not mad. I just worry about you, and I wish you could see it the way that I do. I never blamed you for the accident and neither did your father. It was wrong of me to say, but I just want you to come back home. 

Her breath hitches, strained.

I love you, please call me back

This time when it goes to voicemail, she opens her mouth, but everything she was going to say seems to flee from her mind.

Hi baby, it’s me again… I don’t know what else to say at this point, except that I’m sorry… 

There’s a breath. 

I don’t think I ever told you this, but when you were a baby, I wasn’t around much, and that’s my fault. I was always working on some big project; and I know it sounds like I’m making excuses but I’m not, because no matter how busy I got or whatever would come up from a client; I never stopped loving you. I will always love you, because you are and will always be the best thing in my life, even when we fight. 

So come home, because your Mom is waiting for you.

She ends the call.

She falls asleep, cramped into the armchair that she’d pulled in to face the foyer. She dreams about Jeremy coming home in the middle of the night while she sleeps, only for him to leave again in the morning. 

She wakes up in a cold sweat, the light flashing against her blinking eyes, and she grabs for her phone. 

There are no calls and no texts.

There’s a sniff when the lines picks up.

Jeremy, it’s me again. I know how mad you must be with me but it doesn’t change the fact that I love you, even when we fight, which I know I’ve already told you. And I think that because you’re mad, you’re trying to hurt me like I hurt you. 

There’s another sniff, and a small pause. When she presses the reciever against her face again, her voice is on the verge of breaking.

And it’s working. It’s working, so please, please, come back.

The line turns off. 

It’s halfway through the next day when she calls again.

Hi Jeremy, I washed your sheets today, so they’ll be ready for you when you come home. I’m really worried about you. I’ve been thinking about calling the police, and I know it’s only been a day and you’re an adult, but I worry. It’s my job as your Mom to worry. I won’t call if I hear back from you, but if I don’t, then you’ll have to forgive me eventually. I can’t handle you being upset with me, but I can live with it; but knowing whether you’re safe or not is something I would die for. 

I love you, baby.

The call ends.

The phone only rings once.

Seattle PD. A woman’s voice answers, collected and concise.

Hi. Her voice sounds pathetic compared to the woman on the other end. 

Hello ma’am, what seems to be the problem? She swallows once.

My son, we had a fight yesterday morning and I haven’t heard from him since. I’ve tried calling his friends but no one seems to know where he is.

Can I get a name and description.

Jeremy Prince; tall, brown hair and blue eyes; he’s eighteen.

Do you remember what your son was wearing the last time you saw him?

A red sweater with jeans.

Thank you ma’am, I’ll notify missing persons and get back to you as soon as I have any information.

The line cuts off.

As she’s expecting, the call goes to voicemail.

Hi baby, I didn’t hear from you after my last call, so I called the police about ten minutes ago. She swallows. They, uh… they’re filing a missing persons case.

Her voice cracks on the end of her sentence and she sniffs, her voice waivering at each syllable when she speaks.

So please come back, or at least call me or text me to let me know you’re okay. I love you.

She hangs up.

The call comes around ten. In her haste, she scrambles for it from across the room.

Hello? The line seems heavy.

Mrs. Prince, this is Detective Theresa Yvaine, I’m the officer you spoke with over the phone. There’s something I need to discuss with you about your son. Her heart races suddenly.

Did you find him? Is he okay?

There’s a sigh on the other end of the line.

Ma’am, I’m calling from Seattle Med; your son has been involved in an accident, that’s why you didn’t hear from him.

But I’m his emergency contact.

Ma’am, he’s a John Doe, the police and doctors have been struggling to identify his body.

Her chest constricts.

His body? She whispers. The line is silent for a moment.

We’re going to need your signature.
