I am currently reading an advance reading copy of bestselling author, Jo Nesbø’s forthcoming horror novel The Night House. This will be released on 28th September 2023.
As it is being targeted at Stephen King fans, I will be able to say if this Stephen King and horror fan enjoyed it.
Have you read any of Jo Nesbø’s other novels?

Hey Everyone!
It’s been YEARS since I made my last movie review. I started to take a break when I was pregnant and my baby is now a sassy almost six year old. One of my new favorite thriller film inspired me to write a review.
'The Night House’
A recent widower Beth (Rebecca Hall) spends the first night alone in her house on the lake that her late husband had built for them.
Unexplained things happen in the house to lead her to believe her husband is still with her. Following breadcrumbs he had left for her she discovers something more sinister.
If you haven’t seen the trailer, you can catch it below.
youtube
What I struggled with on this film.
First off, after the second frightening thing that had happened in the house I would have already been gone.
Unless she was going for a certain vibe with this hardcore paperweight. The statue would have never been brought into the house, cannot imagine she thought that was a smart idea. Take a picture, research later.
What I LOVED…
There was a couple of scenes where the song “The Calvary Cross” by Richard and Linda Thompson would randomly blast from the stereo in the middle of the night. Its actually a great song!
When it comes to movies, I can usually figure out is going to happen since majority of movies are so predictable, this movie had me guessing!
The message in his final letter always gives me the creeps, because it sounds so random but it all makes sense.
“You were right, there is nothing. Nothing is after you. You’re safe now.”
I also enjoyed trying to spot the silhouette of a man in the house.
Overall Thoughts
After watching this film, it made me think of all of the different possibilities of it being a mental illness or if it was really paranormal of what she was experiencing. Either way, I really enjoyed this movie, so much so it inspired me to write a review!
I think if you’re in the mood for a scary/thriller this is the film for you! Its currently streaming on HBO Max.
Chris’s Rating: 8
Stina’s Rating: 9

The Night House is a very inventive and surprisingly original movie. There are a few jumpscares and chilling moments that make the movie memorable, and Rebecca Hall carries the film with a very powerful performance. Check it out, people! It's great!

Stays Krunchy in Milk Episode 441: Off Shoot Street Shark Villain
Another week in the podcast streets, another week without Ohio’s congressional districts meeting muster. We also discuss a good Samaritan rescue from the Cuyahoga River. Ant, along with his lady, whipped up another game for us to try out this week. Dan gets pulled into some family drama without knowing it but he also went to a fancy restaurant so it all kind of breaks even. We do some city planning and discuss what’s best for the city we call home. Gabe spins a yarn that I will give a Trigger and Content Warning to as it involves discussing suicide. The Twitter discourse regarding Spider-Man 3 and Dark Knight Rises got us riled up. This leads us to discussing how Twitter discourse can often go sideways and we explain to Box why he is not responsible for all the evil that white folk do. We rock down to Reddit Avenue and hit you with a triple dose of Am I The Asshole. We then discuss all we have been watching and playing including The Morning Show, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Abbott Elementary, the latest Fast and Furious movie, and Cleveland Guardians baseball. Oh, and we spoil the shit out of The Night House so if you want to watch that, you might want to skip that part.

The Night House: Call your praphit, you drunk!
The truth WILL surface. Ya damn right it will!
This is Rebecca Hall. She’s one of my wives, so regardless of your thoughts on the movie... you watch your mouth, ok?? :) Thanks.
Anyway, she is sad, because her husband is dead.
Now, she's hanging out in a lonely house, in the woods, by a lake. Everybody knows that when someone dies in a lonely house, in the woods, by a lake (especially in the way that he dies) that very soon, some paranormal shit is going to go down. I don't know if it's the water, or the woods, or the lack of neighbors, but it's going down. I don't even know why people living out there are ever shocked.
If it were me and my family:
(Just getting off the phone) - "Well, everybody, Grandpa just died. Go fill daddy's Super Soaker with anointing oil, get the prayer beads, the whiskey, and daddy's camouflage bandana. Your pop pop was always a dick. We'll be ready if he tries something from the beyond."
Gotta be a warrior if you're going to live out there, but Rebecca decides to sulk instead. Which I guess is fine (dead husband and all).
She's got those what-the-hell-do-I-do-now-crazy eyes. She's snapping at everyone. She's lost her concern for her job (teacher).
She's walking around that big house with no curtains. C'mon, Rebecca! Cover ONE window! Even though she doesn't have real neighbors, there are still people who live around the area; people walking around, doing God knows what - like this guy
(Mel, her friend)
You know dag on well that there were times, at night, when Mel was walking by "walking his dog", that he'd see Rebecca in the window, getting ready for a shower. Yes you did, Mel! Admit it! You dirty bastard!
There wasn't too much showering going on though, because Rebecca is depressed, and so not doing much. Sometimes, people would bring her food as comfort. She would thank them and then immediately throw it in the trash can. Though, later, she'd pick the food out of the trash. Depression is an odd passenger.
Oh, and the booze! Rebecca is very familiar with alcohol. The movie really could have been called "The Booze" or "Booze by the Lake".
I know what you're thinking. I was thinking the same exact thing at the beginning of this movie - "Why didn't she call me?"
Idk, Tumblr people. I don't know.
I know there’s the dead husband (not making light of it), BUT, SILVER LINING - you have an excuse to call me over. We'll eat trash food together (eating food out of the garbage by yourself is just extra sad), we'll play some funky music, drink a lil bit of the good stuff
(I said A LIL BIT, REBECCA!).
Why wouldn't you let me help you push all of that hurt deep down, and then it can boil up and over, slowly... over decades, when I'll be long gone? Let me help you in the now :) Cuz honestly, you're bumming me out.
She doesn't call me, and so the spookiness starts: ghostly footprints, gates that she thought she locked are unlocked and opened, the music randomly comes on in the middle of the night, she has weird dreams with a voice telling her to do things. Be careful with disembodied voices, especially when you've been depressed, not sleeping, and sucking down the booze. And even if it's a loved one's voice that you think you're hearing; you don't know what kinds of stuff they were or ARE into now. Cuz her husband had some secrets. Not cool secrets like a stash of magic mushrooms, but some... I won't say, but... let's just say she thought she was marrying the honorable prince of the story, but he might actually be the psycho of the story. You'll see, people. I haven't actually revealed anything.
She has one good friend to confide in,
but what Rebecca has to say is kinda crazy, plus her friend knows about The Booze (Becca reeks of it). If I had the time, I would have added some stink lines from her... really her whole body :)
Y'all know of #BelieveWomen There needs to be a #BelieveHystericalPeopleWhoLiveInALonelyHouseByTheLakeWhenTheyTalkAboutParanormalShitEvenThoughTheySmellLikeBooze
Had she believed Rebecca, everything would have been fine. The friend would have called me. I'd come over with some prayers. We'd hit the clubs
and LET THE HEALING BEGIN!
But, she didn't believe Rebecca, so creepy stuff like this kept popping up.
Idk if that's cult related or if it's a sign of the latest kinkiness that the young people are into, but it looks unpleasant. This... THING is never really explained, and I for one am thankful for that.
There are so many levels to this movie. I liked it a lot, but I can see how some might think it's boring (it’s a little too long). And like that stick lady above, there are things that aren’t explained well. Some might not find this movie all that entertaining, but I did, and I find all of the “levels” interesting. It kept me guessing "What the hell is going on?".
Is this a paranormal movie? Is it going into C.S.I. territory? Are there kinky cult things happening? Has Rebecca just had too much to drink? Are they going to blame everything on the black dude (who was clearly out there peeping)? Is this all about grief?
Why hasn't she called the police? Why hasn't she at least called a priest? Why hasn't she left (possibly with me)? All great questions.
Speaking of "great", Rebecca Hall's acting - YES! The “levels” had me anyway, but Rebecca keeps this movie running.
I did find the fact that Rebecca didn’t know anything about her husband’s secrets to be unbelievable, but when we’re in love, we see what we want to see, right?? Though Mel, The Peeper, definitely should have known more about the creepy stuff that was (allegedly) going on.
There is also an issue towards the end that is never addressed. I don't know if it's because it never really happened, or if they just forgot. But, if it DID really happen, it does seem like it deserves attention. It's a smack-you-in-the-face detail. A "Hey, Jesus has risen!" moment in the story, where you don't just get to keep casually progressing. But, whether it's not real, or it's real and assumed they'll handle it, or bad writing, I'm gonna let it slide; there's too much that I like about it.
Grade: B*
The asterisk is there, cuz you have to be in the right mood. This ain't no popcorn-popping horror movie. This ain't no playing under the sheets type of movie, well... :) BUT, you'll be lost.
It's a long episode of the X-Files.
The Lesson Here:
If you're the one who needs help, quit being a putz, and get help!
And if you're the friend of the one who needs help... kidnap your friend and tie them up, until they agree to get help (get it in writing).
Look, what I found -
Apparently, there's a different "The Night House" out there. I like this cover for the sequel.
"This Fall, Rebecca Hall is here for your booze. And dammit, she's going to get it."
