The Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Barcelona, 1945: A city slowly heals in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, and Daniel, an antiquarian book dealer's son who mourns the loss of his mother, finds solace in a mysterious book entitled The Shadow of the Wind, by one Julian Carax. But when he sets out to find the author's other works, he makes a shocking discovery: someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book Carax has written. In fact, Daniel may have the last of Carax's books in existence. Soon Daniel's seemingly innocent quest opens a door into one of Barcelona's darkest secrets--an epic story of murder, madness, and doomed love.

Now that I'm going to Barcelona I've been thinking about re-reading The Angel's Game, which is one of my favorite books ever but feels rather macabre since it's the equivalent of "Yay! I'm going to walk the streets where my fav fictional writer David Martin lost his mind!"

Don't be offended, but sometimes it's easier to talk to a stranger than someone you know. Why is that?
I shrugged. 'Probably because a stranger sees us the way we are, not as they wish us to be.'

People read The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón and then don't read the sequels and miss one of the craziest series of books ever published.
They don't know about Fermín's backstory.
They don't know about my crazy bestie David Martin who makes a deal with the devil.
They don't know about Alicia, the best character in the entire series!
The Shadow of the Wind really is just the tip of the iceberg.

Here's to labyrinth-themed books which are labyrinths in and of themselves due to the multiple narrators and interweaving plotlines AND also have their own official soundtracks 🥂

The Angel's Game, by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
In this powerful, labyrinthian thriller, David Martín is a pulp fiction writer struggling to stay afloat. Holed up in a haunting abandoned mansion in the heart of Barcelona, he furiously taps out story after story, becoming increasingly desperate and frustrated. Thus, when he is approached by a mysterious publisher offering a book deal that seems almost too good to be real, David leaps at the chance. But as he begins the work, and after a visit to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, he realizes that there is a connection between his book and the shadows that surround his dilapidated home and that the publisher may be hiding a few troubling secrets of his own. Once again, Ruiz Zafón takes us into a dark, gothic Barcelona and creates a breathtaking tale of intrigue, romance, and tragedy.

The City of Mist
By Carlos Ruiz Zafon
A book of short stories to tide me over until after Christmas.
The Shadow of the Wind is one of my favourite books of all time, the rest of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series...not so much.
