Ranking Animated Horse Designs Take 3

This time I really am back by popular demand because the other two posts have been getting a steady trickle of notes for over a year now.

(If you're looking for stuff like Disney and Dreamworks there are two other posts. Here we've got mostly random cartoons and also the Pokemon horses)

Starlite (Rainbow Brite) 6/10 Little weird that he seems to be drawn in a style that's like 3x more realistic than any other character in this show but hey sometimes you just ascend to a higher plane of existence. (2014 Reboot Starlite gets a 3/10. I do not trust him.)

Skydancer (Rainbow Brite) 7/10 I bumped Starlite down a point because he wants what Skydancer has. Skydancer doesn't need rainbows to fly. Skydancer has a lightning bolt. Skydancer has the Drama. (The one wiki page said he's a Shire or a Clydesdale and um I don't think so. Maybe a Friesian.)

On-yx (Rainbow Brite) This is a rocket powered balloon animal. 2/10

Sunriser (Rainbow Brite) 5/10 Eh. I like her hair though.

Swift Wind (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power/ She-Ra Princess of Power)

Right (older version) 8/10 I don't understand the wing physics going on here. Also not sure if the horn is part of the mask or just attached to the mask. Diggin the bib though. Also love that he's a ginger.

Left (new version) 4/10 If the older version wasn't there this would score higher because just as a character design I don't think it's bad but if these are supposed to be the same character he seems so cutesy and I do not vibe with it. I don't know either show. So maybe that works. But it feels wrong.

Amalthea (The Last Unicorn) 9/10 They gave the unicorn the split deer hooves, and the lions tail and that is automatic points from me. Bummed they didn't go all out and give us the goat's beard. Rude. Any distance shot, I love. Close-ups of the face creep me out with the giant doll eyes and tiny nose.

Honey Pie Pony (Strawberry Shortcake) 8/10 Adorable. Fantastically chunky design. The others from this... show? book? brand? are like 6s or 5s depending. But Honey Pie has the It factor. (The It Factor here apparently being that recurring pattern of only the main character's horse being able to talk?? This is the third. Swift Wind, Starlite and Honey Pie have dark secrets about how they come by this knowledge).

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic "ponies" Just as characters they're cute in a "trying so hard to be cute that they almost miss the mark entirely" way. But this is about how they are as HORSE designs. And these are magical gremlins not horses. 1/10 (WHAT is happening on the far right of this set. I do not approve. Zebra is fine though).

My Little Pony: A New Generation Like if the MLP: FM ponies and the Trolls characters somehow had children. Somehow the main character of Bee Movie was also involved. The one on the left makes TikTok thirst traps. -2/10

My Little Pony Tales 3/10 I can almost tell they're meant to be horses. Plus that one has a tattoo of a comb. So. Full extra point for the comb tattoo.

Bratz Horses I can't tell if there's an official video game or cartoon design for these but in ANY given version I found the conclusion is the same: if you look into the gigantic distended eye you will be put under the horse's curse. 1/10

Boxer (Animal Farm) 4/10 All horses are equal but some are more equal than others, but Boxer is not one of them because his mouth is not okay.

Marvin (Marvin the Tap Dancing Horse) 5/10 I mean. Dude's got spats. Come on.

Ponyta (Pokemon) 3/5 The armpit and middle thigh flames were a choice.

Rapidash (Pokemon) 8/10 Look at his face. The angst. He has seen things.

Mudsdale (Pokemon) 8/10 The classic mohawk, dreadlocks and legwarmers trifecta. Love it. Would love to hug him.

Galarian Ponyta 3/10 It's giving sheep, and it's giving dog. Very little horse.

Galarian Rapidash (Pokemon) 4/10 He's angry because his hair is too long and he can't walk and also he has not eaten enough somebody feed this horse.

Here's a list of celebrity voice options that I've heard the most fans suggest to voice Amy Rose in the Sonic cinematic universe. Here are links of some of the suggested voices (*Warning*: Do not watch or read if you haven't seen Sonic 3 yet):

I've only put up my opinions of actresses whose work I know fairly well and/or that I agree with the fan casting opinions for Amy Rose. Here's my thoughts on all of them below (*Warning* - Sonic 3 spoilers ahead):

Kristen Bell:

So far, Kristen Bell is one of my favourite fan casting options that I've heard for Amy so far. I can just hear Kristen's adorable voice coming out of the adorable pink hedgehog. Kristen Bell knows how to create characters that are feisty and hot-headed yet also really sweet and adorable as well. Plus, her role as Anna in the Frozen films shows she's good at playing romantic and vulnerable.

To me, Kristen Bell is just the right balance to make Amy Rose sound optimistic, sweet and loving while also being a fierce badass. The moment that Anna through the snowball at Marshmallow in defence of herself and her friends was pretty Amy in my opinion.

Kimiko Glenn

Kimiko Glenn is a voice that has been suggested by numerous people in my other polls comments so far. I have a feeling she'll be the most popular fan casting for Amy.

I know Kimiko mainly as the voice of Izzy Moonbeam from My Little Pony: A New Generation. I was sure she could get the quirky and optimistic side of Amy down pretty well, but I wasn't sure if she could do bad-ass as the Sonic mid-credits portray her. It's only after learning she has voiced a number of bad-ass characters such as the trouble-making snow leopard, Chuluun in The Lion Guard and the sadistic, origami-folding agent, Paper Star, in Netflix's show, Carmen Sandiego that I felt she was up to do the job as Amy. Also, she plays Peni Parker in both Spiderman: Across the Spiderman Universe and its sequel, Spiderman: Beyond the Spiderman Universe, which is a good blend of both cute and badass.

She certainly has a cute sounding voice that would match up well against Amy's other voice adaptations.

Alison Brie:

Alison Brie, I know mostly as Princess Unikitty, a character who strives on being positive but if her emotions overwhelm her, she can become quite fierce and hot-tempered. These are traits that fit Amy Rose to a T. Her voice is very sweet-sounding, perky but also has a feisty side to it, which would sound really great on Amy.

Anna Kendrick:

While many of you may know Anna Kendrick best from the Pitch Perfect films, for me I know her as the voice of Queen (formerly Princess) Poppy in the Trolls franchise. Ironically Queen Poppy is a optimistic and feisty character who always strives to do the right thing and stop injustices from happening. While she makes a number of mistakes along the way, she always tries her best to fix them. Another similarity she has to Poppy is that her male best friend/love interest, Branch, is also blue in colour (most of the time anyway) and was not always the biggest fan of his pink counterpart (or so it seemed 😉). I'm sure Broppy shippers can relate to Sonamy shippers' frustration on when and/or if their pairings would ever become canon and/or kiss on the lips. Luckily for Broppy fans, their waiting paid off.

While I have no guarantees that Sonamy will become an official couple or kiss in the Sonic cinematic universe, I am hopeful that we may get a lot of ship teasing between the two and maybe signs of a mutual crush. A kiss on the cheek is certainly something I'm hopeful for. 😁🤞🥰 I'm just hoping that Amy's actress will have a lot of great on-screen chemistry with Ben Schwartz's Sonic.

Anna Kendrick is a favourite fan casting choice of Amy's for a number of YouTubers. While I won't deny that I believe she could do the character of Amy justice, I'm worried that Anna's voice will sound too much like Poppy and that the actress may end up being typecast in these roles. As a Trolls fan, I personally prefer Anna to stay as the voice of Poppy and not play Amy as well. It would be better that another actress plays Amy so she can make the character more her own rather than Anna Kendrick playing another strong, optimistic pink character. I feel Amy will only be ripping off Poppy if Anna plays her too. Still, this is simply my opinion.

Amanda Leighton:

A back-up option to Anna Kendrick playing the role of Amy is perhaps Poppy's TV show actress, Amanda Leighton could play the role instead. Amanda has a number of voice roles under her belt and is known for playing optimistic and feisty characters like Blossom on the reboot of The Powerpuff Girls, and also perky and sweet characters like Kristine Sanchez on Disney Channel's Hailey's On It.

I do believe Amanda could play Amy well without sounding too close to her performance as Poppy. Nonetheless, she could still play the role of the character in a way that sounds perky, sweet and feisty all in one.

Hailee Steinfeld:

Hailee Steinfeld is one suggested fan casting of Amy Rose that I have mixed feelings about. Personally, I feel her voice is a bit too low to play Amy as she's known to have a higher and more cutesy sounding voice. Still, considering that the creators of the Sonic movie universe are portraying their Amy as more of a bad-ass compared to her earlier damsel in distress incarnations, perhaps going for more mature and deeper sounding voice could work for this version of her. Maybe she could have a more tragic backstory to back up this change in voice tone.

Hailee could bring the feisty quirkiness to the role of Amy that she's known for, as well as a vulnerability that could be taken to deeper levels as this iteration of the Sonic franchise can go to dark places at times.

Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman from the Spider-Universe films and Kate Bishop from the Marvel Cinematic universe are good examples of Hailee's ability to bring both quirkiness and a funny side to these generally pretty serious roles.

Not my favourite casting choice for Amy Rose, but I'm willing to give Hailee Steinfeld a chance depending on where they take the role in Sonic 4.

Jenny Slate:

Jenny Slate is again not my favourite of the casting options I've heard, but let's breakdown how she may do as the character anyway.

I have noticed that Jenny Slate has a rather nasal sounding voice, which to be honest, wouldn't sound too out of place on Amy as I have found that some of her old voice actors such as Lisa Ortiz's have also had a slight nasally quality to their voice. Still, I do worry her voice may be a bit too deep and nasal to be Amy.

Jenny has played quite of range of different characters though such as the adorable, sweet but tough little Pomeranian, Gidget in The Secret Life of Pets films. Both Gidget and Amy are known for their loyalty to the guys they love (who haven't always noticed them) and have a go-getter attitude that can come across as over-enthusiastic at times.

Jenny Slate has worked with Sonic's actor, Ben Schwartz in Parks and Recreation. From what I've seen on YouTube, the two actors work well together comedically, but considering both play twin siblings in the show, I do wonder how well they'll play two friends who will most-likely be ship-teased as having feelings for each other.

She was also cast alongside Knuckle's actor, Idris Elba in Zootopia, though I doubt that they actually recorded lines together. Nonetheless, Jenny Slate may show interest in acting alongside the two actors again, whether she plays Amy or not.

Overall, whomever they cast as Amy Rose in Sonic 4, I hope she'll bring in the traits which her character is beloved for, while also bringing something completely new to the character and giving her depth and backstory.

Pokemon! I’m keep going back to my pokemon obsession and I have a couple of ideas - Literally just a pmd style thing. Maybe not the humans-turning into pokemon, but a pair of young pokemon becoming explorers and eventually taking down an ancient evil.  - Evil Team grunt x Undercover agent. Or just, platonic. It doesn’t have to be romance, I just really like enemies to friends stuff. One of the characters is a teen/young adult who joined an evil team, and gets paired up with another new recruit who is trying to take down the group from the inside. Could either be casual shennigans, or following the story (from the evil team’s perspective.)  - Ultra beast fusion rp! Lusamine finds out about Nihilego’s ability to fuse with humans, and thinks “gee, what if we could do this with other UBs or pokemon.” So she takes a bunch of kids, children of aether employees, interns or volunteers eager to help, and fuses them with ultra beasts. Those kids would be our characters and.... well, I don’t have any real plot ideas. If it’s interesting I’d love to brainstorm ideas tho

MHA rp idea. Our OCs are some aspiring heroes who’ve been hurt time and time again by hero society. So they become vigilantes, fighting villains while also trying to expose the corruption among the heroes

Magical Girl rp! Our characters are a pair or group of magical girls(or just magical people in general) connected to these flowers called Eternablooms. Slowly they find out that these flowers aren’t as nice as they thought and are actually parasitic and ultimately detrimental to their health

MLP, I love my little pony, and the worldbuilding and general themes of friendship. Also it gives me an excuse to draw ponies - A pair of unicorns are chosen to succeed the princesses (or at least train to do so) and a few days later the Princesses are suddenly snatched up by some evil force. And so begins their journey to find the elements of harmony and defeat (or redeem) whoever threw equestria into chaos.  - While traditional ‘magic’ is restricted to unicorns and a few other animals, it doesn’t stop normal ponies from trying. Like our characters! Two magic enthusiasts who are hornless, but willing to search for ways to master magic regardless.  - Newbie changeling ruler and newly ascended alicorn are forced to work together to face a bigger threat. Preferably, my oc would be the changeling since I already have one, but hey! I’m always looking for an excuse to make more mlp ocs

HARD TO SAY ANYTHING THOUGHTS

Romance has certainly been a subject of contention in terms of anything related to Friendship is Magic. As with any popular medium, there is a pretty large shipping contingent of the fandom that will ship any character that even says just one line to another. Or in some cases especially for the background ponies, if they just simply stand with another character.

But when the show actually gets to like canon relationships and crushes it drives the shipping part of the fandom nuts. Or even just the people who don't like romance involved with ponies at all. For the most part early on though romance was more played for laughs or a purposeful subvert of expectations. From Rarity's crush on Blueblood that's completely demolished by Blueblood's true colors in the Season 1 Finale to the absolutely crazy ride Hearts and Hooves Day was (Though the latter was still enough to cause some fans. Particularly those who were Fluttershy X Big Mac fans. Cause even though the fandom was still pretty young. Fluttermac was apparently popular enough that death threats on DeviantArt happened at around the time Hearts and Hooves Day came around. That's when you know you have a serious shipping problem)

It wouldn't be until the first Equestria Girls where there was an actual somewhat serious attempt at a relationship. But it's safe to say that hardly anyone got behind Flash Sentry. It's still kinda the worst attempt at romance in the entire history of this generation of MLP that it's obvious that the staff had to tone it down to the point they had to let it go and in fact ended any chance of Flash still hooking up with Pony Twilight in the fourth EQG movie. Season 4 would have another Hearts and Hooves-esque episode in Simple Ways where the romance is played for laughs and doesn't stick past said episode.

Though Season 5 seemed to have something going on between Marble Pie and Big Mac at their reunion though the fact that they might be cousins did make some fans unsure about the whole thing.

EQG4 would have the return of romance in the EQG films through Timber and the human version of Twilight. Which while I'm sure gets some similar ire like Flash did. I personally think it's not even half as bad for a few reasons that I've already explained. But even if you don't like it, it's pretty obvious it'll stay mainly in the EQG series since it now involves an entirely different Twilight. And I think that's ok, less potential of harming the main series with an important main character being dragged into a rather forced relationship subplot

Though now in Season 7 we have a return at an actual attempt to have a romance and indeed sticks by the end in the show between Big Mac and Sugar Belle. They perfectly acknowledge Hearts and Hooves Day and how a love potion incident may not cause love to bloom between the two, it's possible to just see them as to have struck a friendship after the whole thing and they just teased the CMC for trolling purposes. But the same can't exactly be said for the whole Marble Pie thing. Even Apple Bloom says it's Big Mac's first crush. There is the possibility maybe Apple Bloom didn't see the signs to put one-and-one together but still anyone who saw the whole blushing and the way they looked at one another probably still have the right to at least question that statement and ask why it wasn't mentioned along with the Hearts and Hooves Day thing. Because it almost seems like the new writer was shown Hearts and Hooves Day, but either forgot or was never told about the episode Marble Pie appeared in. You can't just ignore that.

If I may put in a bit of a disclaimer, I'm not a particularly big shipper. So I'm not saying these things to say like I prefer Marblemac or anything. It's just something that anyone's going to at least question if they ever see both these episodes whether they saw Hard To Say Anything first or not. Also for the exception of Rarity's crushes any relationship/other crushes tends to be kept for secondary characters like Shining Armor & Cadence, Big Mac of course, and Zephyr Breeze's crush on Rainbow (Who the latter vehemently refuses any advances). So it's not been that big of a deal really, I'm even kinda fine with Sugar Belle and Big Mac being together at the end. Though the question will be certainly if it even goes anywhere later on or not.

But if I may get to the episode itself. It starts off pretty alright. Buuuuuut once Feather Bangs steps in and the CMC start their rather dim-witted plan of using fairy tales to get Big Mac and Sugar Belle together. To be honest it might be their dumbest plan since some of their early attempts to get their cutie marks back in Seasons 1 and 2. And I think maybe it's because of the previous Sweetie Belle and Rarity episode, but maybe it comes off as quite contradictory when in one episode Sweetie claims to have grown past some of the things that worked for her when she was young but then uses something that was probably part of her earlier childhood in a sense to help someone. It just seems by Forever Filly's logic, Sweetie should also know Fairy Tales isn't going to work very well. It might arguably be a worse plan then their Hearts and Hooves Day one since they didn't know the love potion would have the side-effects it did until it was too late and if they had known probably wouldn't have gone on with it. I do have to admit once it gets to that part of the episode it's a bit of a hard watch on my part between knowing the CMC's plan isn't going to work and the whole Feather Bangs thing isn't exactly making any of the scenes any better.

Though once all that's over it does pick back up at least a bit. Though making that bigger shelf to get them together at last may still seem a little fast because as much as that was sweet. I don't think it'd entirely absolve Big Mac of going along with the CMC's plan earlier. And hey Feather Bangs doesn't just get thrown away after all that is over and even gets a kinda sympathetic ending to him, which is kinda nice since normally those kind of characters in these type of episodes are almost always  kinda treated like an antagonist that gets beaten in the end (On a side note Feather is voiced by Vincent Tong. Gotta say poor Vincent, that's the 3rd male love interest character that probably doesn't have that good of a reputation in the fandom. I'm of course referring to Prince Blueblood and Flash Sentry).

All that said though, this episode may be my least favorite of Season 7 thus far. I don't think it's entirely that bad like I'd still prefer it over some of the episodes that I didn't like so much in the first half of Season 6 but I just don't feel it's quite as strong as the others has been this season. As a big part of it is not something I look forward to rewatching really. Also I have no idea if Sugar Belle and Big Mac's relationship will even go anywhere significant. There is potential they could cover like the possibility of Big Mac leaving the Apple farm to live closer with Sugar Belle. But the question is if they'll even go that far for it. We'll have to find out later.

Coming up next is Honest Apple. And episode that quite frankly has a moral that sometimes the entire internet needs to take heart sometimes.

Okay, before I can really focus on the new month/new year of reading, I first have to wrap up all of last month’s reading and content. While I didn’t generate as many posts as I would have liked, I can blame a lot of that on how work made me feel physically. But I’m happy to say that for the first few months of 2020 I’ll basically be sitting at a desk, which means plenty of time for reading, writing, and blogging. It should be a pretty productive time.

Oh, and the change in work schedule–bleh to having to go to second shift for three months–meant that I actually had to go out and finally get a new car. Mine stopped running in Jan 2018 and I never got a replacement because Damian and I were on the same schedule again, so carpooling was how we operated. My temporary week or two on a different schedule made for some weird times of sharing the car, but we couldn’t sustain that sort of life for three months. And I ended up getting a car much newer and nicer than I’ve ever had in my life: a 2012 Honda CR-V. That’s pretty nice.

So now it’s time to jump into the wrap-up of everything I read in December, which was 22 books. Now, don’t get too excited about that number: 8 of those are Christmas presents I bought for my 2 year old niece, and as always I have at least a couple volumes of manga on the list as well. Yes, I still read quite a bit, but I was really hoping that I would get so much more accomplished in the last 10 days of the year.

I did create a 12-hour readathon event, called #JolabokaflodReadathon, and I read 5 books in that time, so that was a lot of fun, and I’m hoping to make the event even better in 2020, since in 2019 I thought of it a day before I did the readathon.

Okay, now with the wrap-up finished, it is time to talk Book Haul, which also means talking Book Unhaul, and OwlCrate Unboxing. So there’s a lot to go over.

Let’s just go ahead and start with the Unhaul portion. In an effort to tidy up the library area, I had to do a lot of shelving books and reorganizing my shelf arrangements. While I was in the middle of that, it only seemed natural to week out those books that I just don’t see myself reading or that I don’t see myself picking up to read again.

Turning in those books to Half-Price Books was actually a nice money help around the holidays. I technically got enough money to buy myself another 3 or 4 books, and I told Damian that I would roll that into books to buy in January since December was a low book-buying month. Though I did pick up a couple books at HPB while we were there as well. But when it comes to non-gift book purchases, I only bought four books for myself (technically five, but B&N was running a Buy 2 get 1 free sale on manga). So I bought both volumes of Fairy Tail 100 Year Quest and got My Hero Academia, and then I picked up Reverie and Children of Virtue and Vengeance. The rest of the manga were either purchased by Damian or they were Christmas presents, and then The Blade Itself, and both The Secret Loves of Geeks books were from that trip to HPB. So since I didn’t technically reach my 5 book purchases in December, again, I rolled the single non-purchase over for January, because I have a feeling I’ll need it.

All right, well now it’s time for the OwlCrate Unboxing portion of today’s post. This ended up being a book that I had already owned for over a month and had already read. I do really like the OwlCrate Exclusive Cover, though. I think I’m most excited about the hand warmer, but it’ll also be nice to relax with the coloring book and colored pencils.

Finally, I guess I need to talk about my TBR for January, and half of my TBR is currently in digital form because I’m really trying to keep up with my NetGalley early copies this year. I might even start trying to work on including some older NetGalley reads so that I can get my review ratio up.
