Hey quil, I trust your book taste, can you give me some reccs perchance? I’m not picky, whatever your faves are
of course! you'll have seen some of these before in my dragon recs list, but I'll throw in some other ones too :)
A Chorus of Dragons by Jenn Lyons; My favorite book series of all time. I can't tell you what it's about because discovering that is part of the plot. Genuinely changed how I think about fantasy and writing. This post goes into a tiny bit more detail but I cannot stress enough it only covers like 2% of the story it makes me FERAL you just need to trust me and stick it out through the confusion (trigger warnings)
Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by RF Kuang; young Robin is taken from his home in Canton to England when his family dies, his knowledge of Cantonese invaluable in a world where language, via silver bars, can literally become magic. The British Empire is working to collect all it can for its own gain, but as Robin grows up and learns more of how the world works, how it wants to use him, the more he finds it shouldn't be this way. A beautiful story on loss, oppression, imperialism, injustice, and language's role in identity. I cried.
The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan; Isabella, now an old woman, recounts how she became the most renowned dragon naturalist in the world--overcoming misogyny, maneuvering through politics, and more. Follow her from childhood to present day around the world, studying dragons in the field. This story has wonderful characters, critiques the "not like other girls" trope, has beautiful relationships (including platonic!), a lot of action and intrigue alongside the fascinating science, animalistic dragons, and!! SO many pictures! the artwork it's seriously incredible. Love this series
The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd Jones; around Colbren, the dead don't stay dead. Ryn, a young gravedigger, agrees to take the mysterious visiting mapmaker, Ellis, to the abandoned castle, because she needs the money to support her two siblings and in hopes of stopping the worsening curse. Ellis, found near the woods as a babe, hopes to find some remnant or clue to who his family was, who he was. together, they must face the walking dead, find the abandoned castell where this all started, find the answers, and find themselves. I adored it's tone, characters, how it handled death and grief, everything. it reads like a fairytale in the best way
The Martian by Andy Weir; Mark Wattney's an astronaut on Mars when a storm hits, forcing the mission to return to earth prematurely--but he doesn't make it to the shuttle in time, they presume him dead, and leave devastated. now alone on Mars, Wattney's got to figure out how to survive--and how to get in contact with earth and let them know, hey, uh, I'm still here guys. one of my favorite hard sci-fi books of all time. Wattney is such an entertaining, intelligent guy; he'll have you laughing, then on the edge of your seat as Mars tries its best to kill him. this one also comes with a movie :)
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn; Bree's in an early-college program, grappling with the very recent death of her mother. when she stumbles into creatures that shouldn't exist, magic, it starts to look like her mom's death might not have been an accident. she finds a secret society of the descendants of king arthur + the round table, inheriting their powers to defend the world from a different plane--and Bree needs to find out what they know. but getting in is difficult as a Black girl, especially when their guard dog is convinced she's a demon. a beautiful story on grief, Black generational trauma, racism, identity, and more. we're eagerly awaiting book three this spring <3
The Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir; of course I had to include this one--tonally similar to ACOD in that you WILL be confused <3. The Emperor Undying needs necromancers; Gideon doesn't give a shit, but the girl she's been raised alongside, Harrowhark, the heir of the house on their far away planet, doesn't give a shit that Gideon doesn't give a shit. She contracts Gideon to serve as her guard, her cavalier, as Harrowhark travels to the Emperor's planet to compete to become one of his right hands. Except as the competition progresses, something's...wrong. fatally, lethally wrong. people keep turning up dead, and if they don't figure this out, they could be next.
I'll stop there, but I hope you find something you like on that list! If you (or anyone else) have any more specific requests or guidelines for recs, feel free to send them :)

Tagged by @magic-is-something-we-create to post the first line of the last 10 stories I wrote. I decided to include WIP(s) this time because I haven't finished that many since the last time I did this, so this is the first line of the last 10 things I worked on (and I decided to specify by chapter as well, to keep it fresh).

Richie figures it's a dream, the first time. from Living Shall Forfeit Fair Renown

It's already too late when Kieran realizes where he must have ended up. from One Feeling Only

The streets outside are brightly lit and lively. from NOBODY
There is a monster that lives at the bottom of the sea. from The Drowning

I’m now convinced that Dexter Jettster's famous Jawa Juice is Dex dodging around some large corporation’s bullshit trademark.
Here’s the breakdown:
1) In the original Attack of the Clones script, FLO doesn't offer Obi-Wan a cup of Jawa Juice. She (or Hermione, depending on the draft) offers him a cup of Ardees.
2) Ardees is mentioned in the Black Spire Outpost Cookbook by the in-universe author (Strono “Cookie” Tuggs) as a beverage company who trademarked the recipe for the drink Moogan Tea.
3) To avoid having to use (and pay for) official Ardees mix, Cookie and other bartenders are willing to "brew [a mug for you]... the way it was originally intended," but on the downlow (See beneath break for official recipe + caption of said recipe).
4) In the old Hyperspace article "Dining at Dex's" Dex reveals that he got his recipe for Jawa Juice from a group of Ryn he helped fight off "overzealous tax collectors," and was given their process for roasting ardees seeds as payment.
The best cup of Jawa juice I ever had was brewed by Ryn settlers on a nameless planetoid in the Corporate Sector. The settlers were having problems with some overzealous tax collectors and their Espo enforcers, and they hired me to bring them certain goods and equipment so they could defend themselves. They offered me a small fortune in chrysopaz and aurodium in exchange for my services, but after one sip of their hot Jawa juice, made using an ancient Ryn technique with freshly roasted ardees sees, I asked for the recipe and nothing else in return. I think you’ll agree it's the best ever brewed.
 5) ERGO: Dex is working around Ardee's trademark of Moogan Tea by using the Ryn's recipe (called Jawa Juice) which swaps the tea out for caf (which is brewed from the ardees seeds).
6) Not only that, but to align with the "Jawa" name and the fact that Ojom is Space Finland (because I’m Finnish and I said so), the process used to brew the ardees seeds is the same as Finnish Egg-Cleared Coffee. And we do know how Jawas love eggs (SOO-GA!!!)
Yes I know the Wookiepeda page and an official book says something different, but I’ve Pepe Silvia’d my Glup Shitto drink and I’m keeping this.

Captions for Each Recipe by Strono “Cookie” Tuggs:
MOOGAN SPICE SYRUP
Used to be a time when the sweet and spicy libation known as Moogan Tea was brewed fresh daily in every cantina on the Outer Rim. That all changed when the Commerce Guild took control of the planet Mooga and laid claim to its most renowned beverage. Determined to squeeze every possible credit outta their now-proprietary recipe, the guild set up its own manufacturin' plant-known as the Ardees Beverage Company-and started sendin' out cease and desist transmissions to any barkeep who dared brew a homemade version. Too bad for the guild, their secret recipe wasn't ever really a secret to begin with. I realize I might be riskin' some serious legal ramifications by passin' along my own personal blend for the syrup, but if the guild wants to get their hands on me, they're gonna have to go through a lot of happy customers first.
PREP TIME: 5 MINUTES
INFUSING TIME: 4 HOURS
YIELD: 1 1/4 CUPS
INGREDIENTS:
1 TEASPOON VANILLA EXTRACT
1 CINNAMON STICK, BROKEN INTO SMALL PIECES
1/2 CUP PACKED BROWN SUGAR
1/2 CUP GRANULATED SUGAR
1 CUP WATER
Combine all the ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook until the sugar has dissolved, then let sit for at least 4 hours to let the flavors infuse. Strain into a clean bottle and refrigerate until ready to use. Keeps for 1 to 2 weeks.
---
CHRISTOPHSIAN SUGAR
COOKING TIME: 15 MINUTES
YIELD: 1 CUP
DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM
If you've got a taste for somethin' sweet, then you're gonna want to mix up a shaker full of Christophsian sugar. Inspired by the crystalline forests on Christophsis, this caramelized-sugar mix is sure to warm you from head to tail with its subtle notes of spice and citrus. It's a multipurpose mix that can add just the right amount of sweetness to any treat. I can't resist sprinklin' it on top of freshly toasted mealbread, tossin' it with some freshly popped grains, or mixin' it into a nice hot cup of caf. This stuff is nearly as versatile as my Nerfsteak Seasonin' (page 29), and equally addictive.
INGREDIENTS
1 CUP PLUS 1 TEASPOON SUGAR, DIVIDED
1/2 CUP WATER
1/2 TEASPOON ORANGE EXTRACT
1/2 TEASPOON VANILLA EXTRACT
1. Combine 1 cup of the sugar, water, and orange extract in a small nonstick saucepan. Cook over medium heat without stirring for about 10 minutes, until the mixture develops a thick consistency and agolden amber color.
2. Add the vanilla extract and the remaining 1 teaspoon sugar, and stir vigorously, until the mixture turns pale and puffy and recrystalizes, about 5 to 10 minutes.
3. Stir a few more seconds to help dry it out, then remove from the heat.
4. While still warm, crumble or crush the sugar into fairly small pieces, and store in an airtight container.
---
MOOGAN TEA
Don't let the fancy corporate brandin' fool you: Moogan Tea was around long before the Ardees Beverage Company trademarked the recipe and tried to claim the "galaxy's favorite” drink as its own. These days, it's almost too easy to grab a bottle-or a can, if you like the fizzy variety-on the go for just a couple of credits. But if you wanna get a taste of real Moogan Tea, the kind we used to drink back before big business dipped its filthy fingers into the concentrate, just ask any respectable barkeep. But try to keep it quiet. As long as there aren't any corporate surveillance droids around, they'll be glad to brew you up a nice frothy mug the way it was originally intended. Sure, you might be walkin' a dangerous line when it comes to galactic trademark laws just by havin' a sip, but taste like this is probably worth it.
PREP TIME: 5 MINUTES
YIELD: 2 SERVINGS
DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM
INGREDIENTS
1 1/4 CUPS PREPARED UNSWEETENED ICED TEA
1 CUP CHOCOLATE MILK
1/4 CUP MOOGAN SPICE SYRUP (PAGE 33)
1/2 CUP HEAVY CREAM
1 OUNCE FALERNUM
1 TABLESPOON CHRISTOPHSIAN SUGAR (PAGE 38), MIXED WITH 12 TEASPOON GROUND CINNAMON, FOR SPRINKLING
1. Combine the iced tea, chocolate milk, and Moogan Spice Syrup in a small pitcher
and refrigerate until ready to serve.
2. In a small bowl, beat the cream until it forms stiff peaks, then add the Falernum and beat until just mixed in.
3. To serve, fill two tall glasses half full with ice and divide the tea mixture between them.
4. Top with the flavored whipped cream, and sprinkle a little of the Christophsian Sugar on top.

fuck it doing a list of autumnal book suggestions because Cat’s Eye is so very suitable for this.
not all of these books are set during autumn or halloween related they just give me strong fall vibes. turning leaves and bonfires and crisp cold nights and golden sunlight and school days and haunted houses and all that.
Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood: Elaine, a moderately renowned painter in her late forties, returns to 1980s Toronto for a cumulative exhibit of her life’s work. in the process she reflects upon her girlhood adolescence in the ‘40s and ‘50s, and in particular her haunting memories of the charismatic and cunning Cordelia, who ruled their teenage clique with an iron fist.
My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier: Raised by his eccentric older cousin Ambrose, young Philip Ashley grows up in a rational bachelor’s world utterly devoid of femininity or mothering. He is horrified when Ambrose sends word that he has married his cousin Rachel while traveling abroad in Italy. Ambrose’s letters grow scarcer and more suspicious of his wife, before he suddenly dies. Philip vows revenge on Rachel, but is soon caught in her enchanting sphere of influence himself.
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel: Elevated by the crushing downfall of his beloved master Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Cromwell has risen from drunken blacksmith’s son to advisor to Henry VIII. A political genius with a talent for intimidation, bribery, and manipulation, Cromwell holds to no particular morals or creed beyond the elevation of himself and his loved ones and England’s turn from Roman Catholicism to the Anglican Church. All the while, he sees the turning tide of the Reformation and the ascension of bankers and mercenaries over kings and their squabbling lords.
Urchin of the Riding Stars by M.I. McAllister: On the mysterious island of Mistmantle, a kingdom of woodland animals lives in uneasy harmony. Urchin is an orphan born from an outsider to the island, under a mysterious and sinister prophecy that proclaims he will one day destroy a great leader. As he comes of age, Mistmantle’s young prince is murdered, the ruling family is thrown into disarray, and a series of plots of murder, political intrigue, and false accusations begin.
Dragonwyck by Anya Seton: 18 year old Connecticut farm girl Miranda dreams of adventure and romance, a life far away from her devoutly religious family and domineering father. An unexpected opportunity arrives in the form of her mother’s distant cousin Nicholas Van Ryn, the enormously wealthy heir to Dutch landlords who is seeking a governess for his young daughter. Miranda is enchanted by Nicholas’ genteel manners and cold beauty, and both frightened and amazed by his supposedly haunted home, Dragonwyck. When Nicholas’ wife unexpectedly dies, he turns his attention to Miranda, setting off a deadly chain of events.
I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem by Maryse Condé: Born a slave but raised free by the witch and healer Mama Yaya, Tituba sacrifices her freedom for her love, John Indian, and follows him from the Caribbean to Salem, Massachusetts. There she attempts to use her magic for the benefit of others, but finds herself in increasing danger and the object of hysteria, hatred, and betrayal. Ultimately she must choose how her story will end.
Uprooted by Naomi Novik: Every year the famous Dragon claims a daughter of the valley as payment for keeping the monstrosities of the corrupted Wood at bay. Clumsy and careless Agnieszka lives in fear of the day he takes away her best friend Kasia, the most beautiful and intelligent girl in their village. However, it is not Kasia who is chosen, and Agnieszka finds herself unexpectedly apprenticed to the Dragon himself, who is not a scaled beast but an extraordinarily powerful and nearly immortal wizard.
Women Talking by Miriam Toewes: In an isolated Mennonite community in South America, the women gather to discuss the horrifying revelation that the men of their village have been drugging and abusing them and their young daughters. For years they have been gaslighted into believing their unexplained injuries were the result of demons attacking them in their dreams. As they allow themselves to vigorously debate and vent for the first time, they must choose where to go from here, and whether they will stay in the only home they’ve ever known, or leave for an uncertain and dangerous future.
The Mere Wife by Maria Dahvana Headley: Herot Hall is the perfect gated community, built upon the bones of an Appalachian mining town. While Willa ferries her precocious young son Dylan between carefully monitored playdates and her husband Roger checks his security cameras at all hours, in the mountains behind the neighborhood, traumatized veteran Dana raises her own rambunctious son, Gren. Short for Grendel. As the boys grow into young men, they strike up a precarious bond, and Willa and Dana find themselves on a collision course of race, class, and gender.

Innocent Steps (2005)
Tumblr media
Plot: Former acclaimed dancer Na Young-sae attempts to make a comeback after his opponent, Hyun-soo, purposely injures him at a dance competition. At the suggestion of his dance studio manager Ma Sang-doo , Young-sae then brings to Korea Jang Chae-ryn, an ethnic Korean from China whom he presumes is a renowned, talented dancer. To his surprise, Young-sae learns Chae-ryn knows nothing about dancing and her soon-to-be married, older sister, Jang Chae-min, is the talented dancer. With only three months until the national dance championship, Young-sae trains Chae-ryn, vowing to turn her into a world-class dancer.
Rating: 5/5
Damn. Just. Damn. No one does a movie like South Korea. I can’t remember the last time I cried at a film. Innocent Steps had me snivelling like a newborn. I have points in my notes that just says “Oh shit. Its sad” and “Why AM I CRYING?!. At first glance, it doesn’t seem like much. It certainly didn’t seem like my cup of tea, but I shrugged off my doubts, and rightfully so because I do not regret watching this one. Although slow paced it drew me in from the very beginning. As someone who isn’t a mushy, lovey-dovey sorta gal, this film was perfect for me with a sweet, innocent, slow burn love.
It was harsh in places, especially where Hyun-soo (Yoon Chan) purposely injures Na Young-sae (Park Gun-hyung), not once but twice. Like, it ain’t that deep, bub. There was also a part where Young-sae’s dance studio manager, Ma Sang-doo (Park Won-sang) beats Jang Chae-ryn (Moon Geun-young) for not being who she says she was and my jaw dropped. From the very begging I thought that Ma Sang-doo was shady and I was right (More on that later).
There are some comedic elements like the two inspectors who lowkey stalk the main couple in the dumbest yet most hilarious ways. They had me wheezing occasionally which wasn’t great since we all know my dumbass decided to watch this film at like 4am.
The two leads had great chemistry and I found myself believing their relationship even before they fell in love which, like, A+ for achieving that. The female lead Jang Chae-ryn  is like super adorable in this and one thing I did notice about   Na Young-sae is that he had one nice butt and overall the film was cheesy but in a cute and endearing way.
BACK TO MA SANG-DOO, I said he was shady and I was right, he’s a money-grabbing greedy shit in this and i don’t like him. Like he practically sells Jang Chae-ryn to Hyun-soo and I almost rioted.. Until i remembered I was watching a film that is.
Because Na Young-sae is injured once more, Jang Chae-ryn has no choice but to dance with Hyun-soo at the dance competition but its all good cause she fuckin nails it lads. AND NA YOUNG-SAE WATCHED and I cried, cause I’m a pussy. And then my wifi cut out like a lil bitch, BUT I GOT IT BACK and saw the end but I won’t spoil it cause you need to watch it.
Watch it
Im begging you
Watch this film

Hello!
Work has been busy and I honestly have been so behind on this feature. I have been unhauling other titles on my shelves and I’ve also been reading a lot of my ARCs from my basement shelf. It’s the books I’ve set aside for this feature that have been sitting around, collecting dust.
Recently, I tried to read one of the books that I prepped for this post. I thought it would be a book I would love, but I honestly felt indifferent towards it. I have this thing where I need to feel that urge to keep reading a particular book. If I find my mind wandering while I’m reading, or if I choose to watch Netflix instead of reading, then I know I either have to a) try harder with the book I’m reading, or b) put that book down.
Over the years, I’ve started noticing my tells for an incoming reading slump. But anyway, let me talk about these three books!
___
A gentle reminder: Just because I’ve unhauled the books in this post and in future posts, it doesn’t mean that they’re books not worth reading. They’re just not right for me. This is more of an incentive for me to free up space and give these books better homes than my basement.
Read my original post and how I’m going about this challenge here.
Have any of you practiced this challenge this past week?

The Afterward by E.K. Johnston
Decision: Saved for later!
I do want to try this book in the future because the synopsis sounds awesome. I’m just not in the right mood to read a book like this one, but I want to give it a shot. Maybe next time around I’ll be more in the mood to read The Afterward.
Synopsis:
“It has been a year since the mysterious godsgem cured Cadrium’s king and ushered in what promised to be a new golden age. The heroes who brought the gem home are renowned in story and song, but for two fellows on the quest, peace and prosperity do not come easily.
Apprentice Knight Kalanthe Ironheart wasn't meant for heroism this early in life, and while she has no intention of giving up the notoriety she has earned, her reputation does not pay her bills. With time running out, Kalanthe may be forced to betray not her kingdom or her friends, but her own heart as she seeks a stable future for herself and those she loves.
Olsa Rhetsdaughter was never meant for heroism at all. Beggar, pick pocket, thief, she lived hand to mouth on the city streets until fortune--or fate--pulled her into Kalanthe's orbit. And now she's quite reluctant to leave it. Even more alarmingly, her fame has made her recognizable, which makes her profession difficult, and a choice between poverty and the noose isn't much of a choice at all.
Both girls think their paths are laid out, but the godsgem isn't quite done with them and that new golden age isn’t a sure thing yet.”

The Chaos of Standing Still by Jessica Brody
Decision: Unhauled
Normally, I would devour a contemporary novel like Brody’s. However, as I was reading, I found myself not only uninterested, but distracted. I had just read some incredible contemporary novels and I expected another great read. To be honest, the constant back and forth from the past to the present, and the standoffishness and meanness of the protagonist also threw me off. Maybe if there had been multiple POVs I would have liked this more, but I sadly put this down when I admitted to myself that I just didn’t care about this story.
Synopsis:
“Ryn has one unread text message on her phone. And it’s been there for almost a year.
She hasn’t tried to read it. She can’t. She won’t. Because that one message is the last thing her best friend ever said to her before she died.
But as Ryn finds herself trapped in the Denver International Airport on New Year’s Eve thanks to a never-ending blizzard on the one-year anniversary of her best friend’s death, fate literally runs into her.
And his name is Xander.
When the two accidentally swap phones, Ryn and Xander are thrust into the chaos of an unforgettable all-night adventure, filled with charming and mysterious strangers, a secret New Year’s Eve bash, and a possible Illuminati conspiracy hidden within the Denver airport. But as the bizarre night continues, all Ryn can think about is that one unread text message. It follows her wherever she goes, because Ryn can’t get her brialliantly wild and free-spirited best friend out of her head.
Ryn can’t move on.
But tonight, for the first time ever, she’s trying. And maybe that’s a start.”

The Art of Losing by Lizzy Mason
Decision: On this month’s TBR
I’m going to try to read this as part of my TBR for July. I really do want to give it a go and see if I enjoy it. I don’t have much to say, other than I expect a lot of tears while reading.
Synopsis:
“On one terrible night, 17-year-old Harley Langston’s life changes forever.
At a party she discovers her younger sister, Audrey, hooking up with her boyfriend, Mike—and she abandons them both in a rage. When Mike drunkenly attempts to drive Audrey home, he crashes and Audrey ends up in a coma.
Now Harley is left with guilt, grief, pain and the undeniable truth that her ex-boyfriend (who is relatively unscathed) has a drinking problem. So it’s a surprise that she finds herself reconnecting with Raf, a neighbor and childhood friend who’s recently out of rehab and still wrestling with his own demons.
At first Harley doesn’t want to get too close to him. But as Audrey awakens and slowly recovers, Raf starts to show Harley a path forward that she never would have believed possible—one guided by honesty, forgiveness, and redemption.”
___
Have you read any of these three books? What were your experiences with them?
I’ll be back next week with another three picks!
Happy reading!

𝒽𝓊𝓂𝒶𝓃 𝒶𝓅𝓅 ( tashi rodriguez. cisfemale, she/her, traveling song + ryn weaver. ) well, would ya’ look at JULIET SHEPHERD this year? i’ve heard they’re a full 28 years young, and are a HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER at NYC COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS, and you can always find them sipping a HERBAL TEA when they CODE. during the night, you can always find them going home to QUEENS by SUBWAY.
BACKSTORY
Juliet was born on the first day of Spring and perhaps that’s why she was able to bloom even in such great darkness. Spring is cold in the city of New York and it was not unusual that March 20th saw chill that year. Juliet came with the spring and her father, Jonathan, began to passed away with the winter. Juliet wouldn’t know her mother till much later, but she would come to learn her mother was also inflicted with a disease (Huntington’s, they called it,) that would pass down to her genetically. She wouldn’t learn about this till she was at least twenty-five and she wouldn’t feel it in her blood till she was at least twenty-eight.
When Jonathan passed away, Juliet’s brother went off to live with his biological father. Juliet, was sent to Madrid, Spain to live with her father’s estranged brother, Matthias, and her paternal grandparents. She was only 7 years old. While the family had effectively disowned Jonathan, they welcomed Juliet with warm and open arms. They adopted Juliet and she became a Acosta.
The Acostas though, for all their kindness, came with their own brand of secrets. From day one, Juliet became familiar with the idea of blood. Bad blood, blood money, having blood on your hands- these concepts were made quite clear to her by her uncle, Matthias. Matthias Acosta was a renowned surgeon at the La Paz Hospital and a prominent member of the Galician Clans. The man spent most of his days with his hands dipped in blood or narcotics. The organ black market in Europe was a dark and dangerous thing, but it saw an influx in supply thanks to Matthias’ handiwork. Despite his job, Juliet never felt as if she had an absentee uncle. Matthias made a concentrated effort to be part of his niece’s life. And they had a good one, for the most part.
When Matthias wasn’t around though, Juliet was raised by her paternal grandparents. They were a kind pair, former members of the Clans themselves, but now grown soft in their old age. They found time for things like languages and literature and they brought Juliet into these spheres as well. Shakespeare. Of course Juliet leaned into the bard when she learned of her namesake. Her youth saw an artistic renaissance of sorts and Juliet would spend days holed up in the library. She was homeschooled.
Juliet joined the Galician Clans out of deep concern for her uncle when she was 16. Matthias, who’d been steering her towards this path, was over the moon. But as she joined the ranks, a new purpose came into existence for the young woman - she wanted to staunch the flow of blood. While Juliet had a distaste for the organization, its values, and its methods - being part of the Galician Clans  meant that she could actively do things to keep the body count low. She could, literally save lives. With her own life on a timer because of a disease that sit in her DNA, nothing felt nobler use of time.
Juliet studied linguistics at the Sorbonne university in Paris and, for the first few years, she assisted her uncle in those black market deals. Her personal work-ethic became clear: no pointless acts of violence and no killing. Indeed, she found her own disposition much more suited for cyber-crime. Juliet switched to computer science for her masters - which she would earn at Cambridge.
As it turned out, cyber crime was the right fit for her. She excelled and, as a result, gained a reputation for it in the Clans. Juliet loved it because it lacked blood.
But this is the part where things get muddled for Juliet. She’d always been incredibly curious about who her mother was. As she got better with computers, she found herself getting better at tracking and one day - she found her biological mother. She found her in New York.
Juliet, now deeply entrenched in this black market world, needed an excuse to leave to go to New York to find her mother. The clever girl invented one, pretended one of their targets was in New York, and she RAN.
For days she searched. And then finally, on a cold Saturday, while on her computer in a small cafe, she found a trace of her in Queens (of all places.) Juliet ventured out to Queens and sure enough, there was her mother, Hannah, not kidnapped, not hurt, but rather…. thriving. She was, she learned, a skilled Hunter. She was a leader of the Shepherd Founding Family that had left behind her family to protect them. And suddenly, the world opened up for Juliet. Creatures, every kind she’d ever imagined from the book she’d read, actually existed. How, how was she to go back to her old life now? Maybe, she thought, she could hide here - far away from the bloodshed of her old life.
She created a new identify for herself. Easy to do, with a computer. She became a lawyer.
But that was Juliet’s life from that moment on. She was 25 when she arrived in New York, learning about the Shepherds, training with her mother, becoming a leader in her own right. A month ago, the Huntington’s sitting in her mother’s body played its card and took Hannah from this world.
History turned is eyes on Juliet, Hannah’s only child.
Now, Juliet is the leader of the Shepherds. She’s only been in the position a couple of weeks. She is still a pacifist at heart.  She continues to spoof her trail so that the Clans thinks she is on some mission. Occasionally, she even sends them false updates. Juliet is determined to keep the Shepherds safe, like her mother did. TL;DR: A Conflict-Averse Soul, A Smart Cookie and A Hardcore Romantic. Born in New York to a heroin addict. Adopted by her aunt when after her mother died and thus moved across the world to Romania. Her aunt was married to a surgeon in the Russian mafia who supplied the organ black market in Europe. Like her mother and her aunt, Juliet has Huntington’s disease. She watched her aunt deteriorate and pass away because of it.
Knows her own body and mind are just a ticking clock.
Joined the Russian mafia as a hacker out of familial pressure. Found a way to escape by convincing the Don to let her go find the supposedly kidnapped member of the Russian mafia (her friend.) Learned her friend has been hiding in New York ever since their ‘kidnapping.’ Decided to follow suit. Now works for the Irish Mafia as book-keeper by night. By day, she is a graduate teaching assistant working towards her PhD in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
BACKSTORY
Juliet was born on the first day of Fall and perhaps that’s why she was able to bloom even in such great darkness. Fall is cold in the city of New York and it was not unusual that September 21th saw chill that year. Juliet came with the Fall and her mother, Hannah, began to deteriorate with the winter. Hannah harbored a terrible heroin addiction and this led to Juliet and her brother having a troubled childhood. Juliet would later come to learn that her mother was also inflicted with a disease (Huntington’s, they called it,) that would pass down to her genetically, but she wouldn’t learn about it she was at least thirteen and she wouldn’t feel it in her blood till she was at least twenty-five.  Hannah’s heroin addiction took her long before the disease did.
When Hannah passed away, Juliet’s brother went off to live with his biological father. Juliet, went sent to Bacau, Romania to live with her mother’s estranged sister, Joana, her husband, Matthias, and her maternal grandparents. She was only 9 years old. While the family had effectively disowned Hannah, they welcomed Juliet with warm and open arms. They adopted Juliet and she became a Mancini.
The Mancini’s though, for all their kindness, came with their own brand of secrets. From day one, Juliet became familiar with the idea of blood. Bad blood, blood money, having blood on your hands- these concepts were made quite clear to her by her uncle, Matthias. Matthias Mancini was a renowned surgeon at the Anadolu Medical Center in Kocaeli, Turkey and a member of the Russian mafia. The man spent most of his days with his hands dipped in blood. The organ black market in Europe was a dark and dangerous thing, but it saw an influx in supply thanks to Matthias’ handiwork. Despite his job in Turkey and their residence in Romania, Juliet never felt as if she had an absentee uncle. Matthias made a concentrated effort to be part of his niece’s life. He made this attempt to make up for his wife’s absence, who spent most of her days bedridden and to herself because of the Huntington’s that afflicted her.
When Matthias wasn’t around though, Juliet was raised by her maternal grandparents. They were a kind pair, former members of the mafia themselves, but now grown soft in their old age. They found time for things like languages and literature and they brought Juliet into these spheres as well. Shakespeare. Of course Juliet leaned into the bard when she learned of her namesake. Her youth saw an artistic renaissance of sorts and Juliet would spend days holed up in the library or at her aunt’s bedside. When Joana was finally consumed by Huntington’s, it was decided that Juliet would attend preparatory school. This would be a change for Juliet as she was homeschooled for the first first few years of her life.
When Matthias decided that Juliet would attend preparatory school, the young girl had felt her heart sing despite the tragedy that still hung heavy over the family. She ignored the intentions behind this choice - ‘It’s never unwise to invest in the future of the Russian mafia.’- and instead focused on the silver linings. Finally! She’d have teachers and classes and schedules, - but most of all she would have friends. This didn’t go quite to plan. Juliet’s anachronistic taste tagged her as odd and isolated student. Put plainly, the other kids found her kind of weird. But no matter. In a few weeks time Juliet had met Nikolas and all the superficiality melted away. He was smart and tenacious and she liked that. One of the few that could keep up with her. She knew she’d found a lifelong camaraderie in this boy.
Her grandparents heard enough about him too. She invited him over for dinner once, so that they and her uncle could meet him. It was a simple enough affair. “I want you to meet my best friend.”
The event was the beginning of the descent.
An innocent enough question in Juliet’s eyes but she could see what it meant to her best friend. In a couple of weeks, Nikolas was dragged into the belly of the beast (the mafia) and all Juliet could do was jump in after him and hope they didn’t both get digested.
Juliet joined the Russian mafia out of deep concern for her friend (possibly, her only friend?). Matthias, who’d been steering his own daughter towards this path, was over the moon. But as she watched her friend climb the ranks, a new purpose came into existence for the young woman - she wanted to staunch the flow of blood. While Juliet had a distaste for the organization, its values, and its methods - being part of the Russian mafia meant that she could actively do things to keep the body count low. She could, literally save lives. With her own life on a timer because of a disease that sit in her DNA, nothing felt nobler use of time.
She continued her education too.
She excelled and, as a result, gained a reputation for it in the Russian mafia. Juliet loved it because it lacked blood. Meanwhile, she watched Nikolas skyrocket through the ranks. By the time she was entering Cambridge he was well on his way to making waves within the Russian mafia.
But this is the part where things get muddled for Juliet. Suddenly, Nikolas was kidnapped by another large mafia in Europe - or at least that’s what the Don told them. The Russian mafia looked for Nikolas after his sudden disappearance, of course, but all traces of Nikolas were just… gone. And all searches for him died a little too quickly. Juliet? Not one to give up.
Any attempts to reach out to Nikolas were meeting dead ends. What if he was still out there alive? What if he was hurt?  For days she searched. And then finally, on a cold Saturday, while on her computer in a small cafe, she found a trace of him in New York (of all places.) Juliet bought a plane ticket and ventured out to the Big Apple. Sure enough, there was Nikolas, not kidnapped, not hurt, but rather…. hiding.
When she found her best friend in New York – Juliet decided to stay. Maybe, she thought, she could hide here too - far away from the bloodshed of her old life.
Now, Juliet is part of the Irish Mafia, far from her Russian debts or even the traces of her Italian lineage. She’s only been here a couple of weeks. She is still a pacifist at heart.  She continues to spoof her trail so that the mafia thinks she is still searching the world for their former member. Occasionally, she even sends them false updates. Juliet is determined to keep Nikolas and herself safe in this city. She has been here for under a year and, when she’s not with the Irish Mafia, she is working towards her PhD. in artificial intelligence and machine learning. She is a graduate teacher’s assistant at Columbia University.

Welcome to the year 2017 where the alumni from the prestigious Nortan Prep are coming together to celebrate their 10 year reunion. Many have put the past behind them like it should be, but there are still those that simply cannot let go. Each alumni has their lives all figured out, but it only takes one conversation to bring you back to a time you had forgotten. It only takes one look from that certain person to flood memories long forgotten. Everyone has made something of themselves, but sometimes we mask our own insecurity with these earthly possessions. Is that what this group has done over the past ten years? Have they been masking themselves from how they really feel?
The reunion takes place at the Plaza Hotel where multiple floors have been booked solid for those coming into town for the event. The ballroom has been decorated extra special to take a walk down memory and the schedule has been laid out perfectly. If there is ever a time to want to go back to your past, it is now as this will be a weekend that no one will forget.
The event will begin on Saturday, May 6th at 12PM EST to give all members a few days to end their current threads and plot for the AU.
The event will end on Saturday, May 13th at 12PM EST unless members request an extension of the event. Since this is an AU, we ask that all threads come to a close at this time to transition back into the actual verse.
Every character will be within the same graduating class. This means that despite a character’s age in the actual verse that everyone will be around 27-29 years old. These detail is not entirely necessary, but we wanted to make it clear beforehand.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to message the main as we would love to clear them up.
BELOW THE CUT — You will find a little information to get you started on developing your character outside of the current verse to make transition into the AU easiest. We have decided to take a bit of control over certain aspects of the AU as the plotting alone could take quite a while to figure out, so we thought this would help. If you would prefer a different one-liner for your character, please feel free to message the main as we want this week to be as enjoyable as possible.
RYN ANDROS — It only took a few good connections to get them in contact with some of the those within the club scene of New York, and this resulted in the creation of their club Persuasion, which now has over 20 locations in the state.

LEI NOLLE — Everyone knows who the Nolle woman is because it takes a simple glance at your TV screen in the morning to see the meteorologist in action. With a growing fanbase, she has become one of the youngest forecasters to gain a popular time slot.
EMORY OSANOS — After graduating from NYU with a political science degree, Emory published a historical fiction novel. Now a best-seller, Emory spends his time working on his next big novel.
LEIRA OSANOS — Following her parents’ instructions, she went to school for politics with a double major in marine biology. Now, she is a world-renowned marine biologist but is perhaps most well-known for openly campaigning against the captivity of sea creatures.
ETTA OPAL — She spent four years at Columbia studying the most underappreciated aspects of this world ; plants. She gained the title of botanist and has made it her mission to show the youth of New York how important it is to take care of the green life of this planet.
RAHUL PROVOS — Provos Designs was created shortly after they left Nortan Prep with a multi-million dollar contract with some of the best designers in the world. They have monopolized the market for high-fashion and are now targeting common wear for those every day people.

AZARIAH XIAO — There is not much known about Az other than what he listed as ‘marketing genius’, but the 2015 scandal that broke loose claiming fraud was wiped under the rug before it could become more.

The English Magic Tarot
The English Magic Tarot
Paperback – October 1, 2016
by Andy Letcher (Author), Rex Van Ryn (Illustrator), Steve Dooley (Illustrator), Philip Carr-Gomm (Foreword)
This captivating new tarot deck draws us into the vibrant but often hidden world of English magic, evoking a golden age of mysticism when John Dee was Queen Elizabeth’s Court Astrologer, antiquarian John Aubrey rediscovered ancient sacred sites, and the great physicist Isaac Newton studied alchemy.
The English Magic Tarot places the cards in the colorful yet turbulent period of English history that stretches from the time of Henry VIII to the Restoration. During this time of upheaval archetypal forces were very much at play, making this a perfect setting for the cards. Brought to you by renowned artist Rex Van Ryn, colorist Steve Dooley, and writer Andy Letcher, this deck has a dynamic, graphic style. There are unique twists to some of the traditional images, with riddles, references, and lore buried within them that will draw users ever deeper into the mystery and meaning of the cards.
The first deck of its kind to draw explicitly on the English magical tradition, The English Magic Tarotopens up a rich new pathway into the cards that will delight novice and experienced tarot users alike. Learn more by visiting www.englishmagictarot.com.
Review
"What we have here is the auspicious release of a new deck of tarot cards based in the mysticism, mysteries, rituals, and lore of Elizabethan-era England, perhaps history’s most fervent period and place for the magic arts. Think knights and fools, monarchs and highwaymen, in the animate land of Stonehenge and druids. These are tarot cards with the dynamism of a graphic novel. Not the stuff of mere fortune telling, they hint at a world rife with forces and cause-and-effect connections, where “change occurs in accordance with will.”" --Foreword Reviews, Fall 2017
“Here’s a unique formula: pacy graphic art plus history and mysticism in the era of Isaac Newton, Henry VIII and Jon Dee (who features as The Magician, naturally). The illustrations are so narrative you can almost hear the characters’ thoughts, but there are hidden messages here, too - and you’ll have to figure them out for yourself. Translate the Ogham and Runes, mirror-writing and Enochian script and, much like magic itself, you’ll find a truth beneath the surface.
The guidebook is witty, practical and wise, with some quirky card interpretations (an embittered Queen of Swords, a procrastinating Knight of Coins); and, while this deck is not for the faint-hearted, it’s a great adventure if you’re up for the ride.” –Kindred Spirit, November 10, 2016 “The English Magic Tarot is the result of a brilliant collaboration between three uniquely talented and original individuals – painters, visual and oral storytellers and musicians – who understand that English magic and the English imagination, are essentially the same thing. They have produced a Tarot which connects us with the past and with the buried mycelium of shared stories and ideas which still erupt into and nourish contemporary culture.” –Alan Lee, book illustrator and movie conceptual designer

Damn. Just. Damn. No one does a movie like South Korea. I can’t remember the last time I cried at a film. Innocent Steps had me snivelling like a newborn. I have points in my notes that just says “Oh shit. Its sad” and “Why AM I CRYING?!”.
Like, it ain’t that serious bub.
W A T C H  I T!!!!
Thats all. Until next time.

English Magic Tarot
https://liber-al.com/?p=40407&wpwautoposter=1562278994 This captivating new tarot deck draws us into the vibrant but often hidden world of English magic, evoking a golden age of mysticism when John Dee was Queen Elizabeth’s Court Astrologer, antiquarian John Aubrey rediscovered ancient sacred sites, and the great physicist Isaac Newton studied alchemy. The first deck of its kind to draw explicitly on the English magical tradition, The English Magic Tarot opens up a rich new pathway into the cards that will delight novice and experienced tarot users alike. Editorial Reviews “Do you believe in magic? Set during the 100 years beginning with the reign of Henry VIII (a time during which English magic flourished), this extraordinary new tarot deck pays homage to England’s magical tradition. It also references the Order of the Golden Dawn who originally merged magical tradition with the cards. Historic figures are quixoticly featured throughout the deck. Simultaneously, the creators give a special artistic nod to Pamela Coleman-Smith, who is just now beginning to be recognized for her independent contribution to tarot symbolism and wisdom. Every detail was carefully considered as this 78-card deck and its 160-page guidebook took form in order to preserve the wisdom of ancient heritages and the energy that each individual card carries. The cards were designed to be fluid and are based on natural rather than demonic magic. (The Fool is a version of the animal totem Coyote and mushrooms represent the inevitable linking of life and death.) The illustrations draw equally on erudite philosophy, modern horror movies, and graphic novels. The result is a unique esoteric tool that will help to move the rich and mysterious traditions of magical England into the mainstream.” –Anna Jedrziewski, TarotWise.com – Reviews “What we have here is the auspicious release of a new deck of tarot cards based in the mysticism, mysteries, rituals, and lore of Elizabethan-era England, perhaps history’s most fervent period and place for the magic arts. Think knights and fools, monarchs and highwaymen, in the animate land of Stonehenge and druids. These are tarot cards with the dynamism of a graphic novel. Not the stuff of mere fortune telling, they hint at a world rife with forces and cause-and-effect connections, where “change occurs in accordance with will.”” –Foreword Reviews, Fall 2017 “Here’s a unique formula: pacy graphic art plus history and mysticism in the era of Isaac Newton, Henry VIII and Jon Dee (who features as The Magician, naturally). The illustrations are so narrative you can almost hear the characters’ thoughts, but there are hidden messages here, too – and you’ll have to figure them out for yourself. Translate the Ogham and Runes, mirror-writing and Enochian script and, much like magic itself, you’ll find a truth beneath the surface. The guidebook is witty, practical and wise, with some quirky card interpretations (an embittered Queen of Swords, a procrastinating Knight of Coins); and, while this deck is not for the faint-hearted, it’s a great adventure if you’re up for the ride.” -Kindred Spirit, November 10, 2016 “The English Magic Tarot is the result of a brilliant collaboration between three uniquely talented and original individuals – painters, visual and oral storytellers and musicians – who understand that English magic and the English imagination, are essentially the same thing. They have produced a Tarot which connects us with the past and with the buried mycelium of shared stories and ideas which still erupt into and nourish contemporary culture.” -Alan Lee, book illustrator and movie conceptual designer “Here, with this deck and book, you have the chance to explore the world of English magic directly, engaging with its peculiar charms and eccentricities. And with what excellent guides!” –Philip Carr-Gomm, author of The Book of English Magic – From the Publisher
