Ya wanna know what I just realized? The overall theme of scarlet and violet isn't actually about our treasure hunt, or making friends along the way,

It's obsession.(and how it hurts those around us.)

In the base game of pokemon scarlet and violet, we learn that the professor,(sada or turo depending on which version you play.) was absolutely obsessed with the paradox pokemon within the scarlet/violet book. They were so obsessed with these pokemon that they wanted, NEEDED to make them a reality by bringing them into our own. Their obsession was so bad, that they not only lost their significant other, but neglected their son to the point of completely abandoning him, all for the purpose of "paradise". Not realizing they already had one with their son.

The obsession has been with the professor since their childhood. As seen in the secret cutscene at kitakami's crystal pool with terapagos in your party, it brings the professor from iirc 10 years before the events of the game start. When they ask to trade for the book ms. Brair wrote they offer their copy of the s/v book and tell you "this book captured my imagination as a child and never let go." They were obsessed. It costed them their life, completely ruined arvens childhood, and almost caused the destruction of the Paldea region because they were too obsessed with having pokemon of the past/future along side them.

Then we go to kitakami, and meet Kieran. A boy who is obsessed with the ogre, a.k.a ogerpon. Kieran believes the two as kindred spirits, outcasts in kitakami because they were different. Though rightly upset at you and his sister for not telling him about meeting ogerpon, takes it too far when he steals the mask from his grandfather. As a result of winning the battle to get the mask back from him his obsession shifts, not really about befriending ogerpon anymore, but about beating you/being as good as you are. He becomes mean and ruthless to those around him in blueberry academy, becoming champion in order to try to be strong enough to beat you.

In the underdepths of area zero his obsession with beating you causes him to seek out terapagos, and catch it so that he can finally beat you.

And finally ms. Briar, obsessed with terapagos and proving it was real. Her ancestor, the original author of the s/v book, heath, was claimed and told to be nothing more than a liar after writing what he had found in area zero. Briar was obsessed, determined to prove terapagos' existence to clear her ancestors name, and that everything in the s/v book was in fact real. In kitakami she was more concerned with figuring out the terastal phenomenon than helping to guide the students from the 2 schools on their field trip.

And once in blueberry, she asks you, carmine and Kieran to join her in area zero to find terapagos. Once in the underdepths she puts herself in danger because of a strangely terastalized glimmora, of which you battle to protect her and the siblings. In the final chamber of the underdepths, she eggs on Kieran to take terapagos(in crystal form) out of the tera crystals around it to finally see the pokemon she's been trying to get to for so long, and then tells him to terastalize the pokemon, putting everyone in danger. As the amount of Tera energy is too much for the little pokemon to control, and thus it goes out of control, destroying the environment around it, nearly causing a cave in.

Ms. Briars obsession with finding terapagos nearly caused the group to get killed because she was so obsessed with finding terapagos. Obsessed with proving that heath was telling the truth all this time.

Pokemon scarlet and violet showed that obsession can hurt and harm those around you. That an obsession like sada/turo, Kieran and ms Briars', will cause the pain of others and themselves in order to reach their goal.

Headcanons for Scar/Vio cast and siblings

Phen: An only child. Sees Arven as a brother and Lacey as her sister.

Nemona: It's canon she has an older sister, but makes no mention of other siblings so I imagine it's just the two of them. (Because of their dad's job I imagine Nemona sometimes feels like the "spare" but she gets on well with her sister)

Arven: Only child but sees Phen as his sister.

Penny: Implied/confirmed? that Peony is her dad so Peonia is her sister. Penny is the older one. They get on well enough, usually bonding over how cringe their dad is.

Giacomo: Has a little sister he dotes on, there's a fair age gap (7 years) but he loves her.

Mela: Oldest of 3, has two younger brothers, so she experienced a bit of parentification.

Ortega: He's the middle child of 3 boys. Middle child syndrome.

Atticus: An only child, he was an IVF baby.

So begins the saga of Arven's Robot Stepdad.

Well, 'saga' is too strong a word. More like a loosely connected series of shenanigans.

(I've been obsessed with the AI ever since I watched my roommate beat Pokémon Violet and now here I am starting comics about him because I've lost control of my life)

If it's hard to tell what's going on, this comic starts with an alternate take on the ending of Pokémon Violet. Instead of sending himself through the time machine (because the AI worries that the machine can't handle sending something as complex and large as himself), the AI ends up giving the player the Alpha Miraidon so they can use it to destroy him.

He technically asked everyone but the player to leave. But Nemona opted to stay with the player.

Gratefully, Arven was successfully convinced to leave the room. I can't imagine seeing a replica of his father being killed the same way his real father was killed would be... good.

Emmy was not going to allow herself to be impacted by the words of some boy, let alone one who didn’t even know her! She didn’t care about what he had to say, it’s not her fault he has nothing better to do with his sorry life! 

The grip on her pencil was perhaps too tight.

She didn’t care. She didn’t care. She didn’t care.

The pencil snapped in her hand, her attention only being drawn by the sound.

She tossed it to the floor with the rest of the trash, things to be picked up when she wasn’t having some outburst over something stupid. Ones that’d only seemed to become all too common as of late. Maybe it was part of being a teenager, but Jem was never like that. Jem was never like her at all.

It didn’t matter. What mattered was finishing her piece for the art festival, having hobbies, things she enjoyed, something she was sure that boy knew nothing about.

Maybe she was forgettable.

It seemed to be a recurring trait in her family after all. The life's work of an ancestor lost to time, along with practically his entire existence aside from a few books. Her parents, too. Not a single thing about them. She’d never asked. She’d never cared. Was that all it took? Someone who didn’t care? Someone who pushed down every question, every feeling, anything that had ever come to mind?

All it took was someone who didn’t care, and oh, how easily that could happen. A child who couldn't remember, didn't want to learn, and had no one to tell them, even if they did.

No matter how far she climbed, the reward of a place in the endless crawl of history would always be too far from her grasp. So fickle, so easy to slip away in but a moment.

And maybe Arven had been right about that.

Teal Mask: Kieran’s desire for strength - not just becoming strong as a trainer but also as a resilient individual in general. *LONG THREAD WARNING*

Just wanted to contribute further to the teal mask content and all that juicy stuff. As we all know, we all have unfortunately witnessed a poor boy’s down-spiral character arc. It is evident that Kieran wants to attain strength to become a stronger trainer and person as a whole. He outright states that he wants to become independent, capable, and reliable at some point. His motivation and source of support - ogerpon -  more so the legend version of ogerpon than the “real” ogerpon, was once a common innocent fixation that many of us probably had/have in our lives, that was then tragically turned to an unhealthy obsession. It became a poor coping mechanism and desperate means of proving himself that pushed him towards reckless methods and mannerisms.  

Parallels with Loyal Three

I mentioned in the comment section of one post that his desire for power parallels with Okidogi. Additionally, he shares similar sentiments with Fez and Munki. He wants to be “cool” like the ogre (achieve a cool status that of a hero, admired for their strength) and seeks knowledge on the ways to succeed like us - he wants to know how to become stronger -  “why can’t I be like you?”. This is shown through his tactics, team member swaps and appearance change at the end. 

Foils with other characters

I find it sad how as Ogerpon learns to open up, heal and receives support, Kieran does not have a proper, stable one since the start - his sister has supported him in some ways of course, but her attitude/actions likely has also contributed to his sense of inferiority. Thus, the combination of misunderstanding, cultural norms, strained familial relationships, miscommunication, and self inflicted misjudgments have pushed him further down the hole. It’s almost as if he is the foil of Nemona (yet also alike) in terms of how strength as a social arbiter determines one’s worth and outlook. Nemona became so strong but at a social cost; no one wants to compete or keep up with her and misreads her passion (likewise with Kieran and his interest in history). She just wants someone to battle with with all of their efforts and enjoy the battle the same way she does, which she does not mind losing. On the other hand, if you’re weak then you would likely get made fun of or ignored, which we see Kieran has internalized that idea through his accusations of us and Carmine laughing behind his back (perhaps this is a common concept that runs in blueberry academy? Competition and becoming the best are of utmost importance). Moreover, he is, in a way, a foil of Arven in ascribing to a legend and superstition - except Arven learns to embrace support after being alone for so long, heals and accepts korai/Mirai, while Kiki feels further isolated, loses grasp of who Ogerpon really is by going against her boundaries and runs away from opportunities of support. As for Penny, it is clear that they share a reclusive nature and willingness to not conform to, but to confront social standards. Penny takes self accountability for her actions, whereas for Kieran, while he does apologize at times and keeps his word - soon gets lost in a convoluted, distorted sense of right and wrong (him stealing the teal mask, and him not wanting to join the mask retrieval mission may seem selfish at first, but it could be that he didn’t want to be a burden as well as be seen sulking). He unfortunately (would) becomes the antagonist or better yet, the oni in our path.

Peach Symbolism

On another hand, kieran may be the peach boy in a sense but reverse. His actions and desire fulfilled the required conditions for the resurrection of the loyal three (desire for “revenge”) and thus indirectly leads them to endanger Ogerpon.  In one of my previous posts, I wrote a poem about how Kieran's dreams were sweet like peach, but then got crushed. And like certain fruits, it has seeds that contains some poison but not at a dangerous level (unless consumed at high amount ofc), which ties to the toxic chain and dokutaro that has been theorized to be external influences partially responsible for his behaviour.

Hero + heroic values

Finally, that one part when he says you’re like the hero of the story (that line goes hard and breaks the fourth wall, it’s been mentioned a lot in visual works on pixiv and social discourses), is a dealbreaker of his wish to keep his new friendship. Despite the portrayal of him hating the player (through memes which I do laugh at, and artworks/ discussions which I agree while sad about it) I think he is mad at us for sure, but not spiteful. Or maybe slightly. I think above all, he is mad at himself;  he constantly faces inner turmoil  to overcoming his helplessness, insecurity, and the process of revising his dreams and outgrowing his old ones. He had to forfeit his one childhood dream and now recognizes that he has to change in some way (albeit a bit extreme). In an ironic way, he would likely become his idealized version of strength, like "his" ogerpon - a strong “oni”- aka champion of bb academy. But again, while physical strength is a quality emphasized many times, Kieran wants to grow mentally strong to endure losses and humiliations both as a trainer and individual (ex. he is told down by his sister as seen in the beginning). He wants to be appreciated and not looked down as someone who is meek, weak and cowardly, which he tries so hard to build himself up on the virtues of a hero. He values honesty and a fair fight and tries to fulfill them to "earn" respect from people + ogerpon as a trainer. And maybe, that is when he feels that he is equal on par with you, and that he can be considered good enough to be our friend.

I really feel a lot for Kieran, because I do see myself in him (not in an obsessive way though) - hated losing, shy, hyerpfixations… I see his good traits and flaws - he is curious, sensitive, empathetic, has a critical mind of mainstream narratives but is also insecure and stubborn. I see too much simplistic takes on them (Kieran is narcissistic victim, Carmen is abusive,etc), like I get some aspects of the ideas, but saying that in a deterministic way does not define the character at all…

WIP Wednesday! I am very thankful for you guys here so have a little sneak peak for next week to celebrate the upcoming holiday:

They cried out her name: Juliana! She cried out theirs in raw desperation. The only thing she could feel was the branches holding her steady. 

Somewhere within the light there stood a figure. Or four. Or possibly many. She saw Arven, she saw the man who was Turo, she saw a whisper of a what if, a woman who had the boy’s eyes. She watched Terapagos devour time and space and the universe until there was nothing but her and the void before anything existed. Here that nothing was formless and empty, before something gave the void breath and it stretched, thinning until it was no more than a bubble. Inside that bubble she first saw the grass, and an unnerving horizon of purple. The intensity of it was irrational, sickly in how it billowed and swelled as if it were heaving.

Then came the pokémon who formed from the dust in the cosmos and they became living creatures. First there was Umbreon, then Porygon, then Porygon2. They held no love for her or anything else, not even eachother. She tumbled away from one’s ire, cut her knee on colorful shards of star that had broken. If this was what became of Terapagos, she didn’t mind it, as cruel as it was. The pokémon in question was nowhere to be seen. But Ogerpon was there, and still at her side. She quivered, and Juliana covered the ogre as best as she could with her own torso.

“Help!” cried Juliana. She patted her belt, couldn’t feel the familiar curve of her team. Her phone was no better; the screen was black and empty, the rotom within it no longer there. 

The air left her chest as she was tackled. 

Ogerpon screeched and she manifested her cudgel. A second umbreon came from the side, scurried under her cloak and bit Juliana bloody. 

She screamed. It was a horrible sound; both her pared voice and the guttural growls that were on her. Eventually Ogerpon batted it off, but her arm ached and she was afraid to look down at the mess of her sleeve. Now she was sobbing, and so so afraid. She called out for her friends, for Arven, for Penny, Nemona, her mom, each of her team. Her brother.

There was a stone pillar, and she crawled her way to it. Where was she? This place was not Oni Mountain, and the clifftops were not clifftops and the Crystal Pool was now sedge and she was lost and unsettled and so terribly confused. Whatever had happened was a long time away, and too far off from where she should be. There was Ogerpon, but it was as though every other pokémon was not such, but wild, feral, deranged beasts. 

I am all alone, she thought in her fear. Until she suddenly wasn’t.

A fit of laughter escaped and she could not feel any pain. She understood where she was then, in her grave, alone and where no one could follow. Her only regret was that she’d dragged Ogerpon with her, left her to fight and struggle when Juliana herself no longer wished to. So it made sense that here of all places and smitten with all kinds of bewilderment she was met by such trial, by Terapagos’s will, or perhaps her own death throe. But she knew she’d been lost to its power; inside the effervescent, or already gone. How else could she cope with the reappearance of Kieran before her?

A comment by @janetm74 got me in the mood for a quick little thing. I always kinda wanted Scott to have something along the lines of "Arven's vision of Aragorn's future", but didn't come up with anything better than a good ole coma dream after a rescue gone bad. Left deliberately ambiguous.

COME TO PASS

His first thought was Dad. A tall, dark haired man was kneeling right by the surf, hands outstretched expectantly. Occasional streaks of grey catching the sun. A small boy with a matching mop of chestnut hair was eagerly running to him, shrieking in delight, tiny feet sending sprays of water and foam up, glistening like pixy dust.

The boy was running to his father from a woman in loose, cotton white, blurred to his sight in the distance. Scott didn't remember going to the beach with Mom and Dad that early, but he didn't remember much of his life before Virgil.

Strong hands caught the excited child mid stride and lifted up, and up, closer to the brilliant blue sky. The laughter of father and son mixed and mingled, and rippled across the ocean.

"Higher, Daddy! Higher!"

THAT Scott remembered well. The anticipation and giddy freedom of flight, the elation, and the absolute trust in the sure, warm hands catching him. He remembered the sinking falling ever since...

He wanted to move closer, but was frozen in place. The man twirled the still giggling boy and hugged him closer, the smile turning softer - so full of love Scott felt his own heart split. Another half turn and the man was murmuring at the now quiet child, beaconing at the woman in the distance with a broader grin. Eyes lifted up from the small form in his arms. Bright blue.

Scott felt an icy shock through his spine down to every finger and toe, despite the scorching sand beneath his feet. He was falling again, never feeling the impact of rushing ground.

Senses were coming back slowly, but slower still was the memory. A rescue. His grapple gun connected with a metal surface and then lost purchase. He was falling. Terrified voices screaming in his ears. Then nothing. His vision doubled and blurred as he tried to blink. A figure was standing nearby, startled into action by his weak movement. He couldn't see well through the haze yet, just felt the echo of familiar phantom yearning, a splatter of light feet in the surf, loose white cotton rippling in the breeze, happy laughter. An incandescent vision of a future he long abandoned to believe true.

teal mask fixit-fic on the fly part 3

(Current story so far: Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 4)

All of your friends were chattering, excited about dressing up and going to a local festival tonight that one of the Blueberry students had very shyly invited you all to. When you'd arrived at his home, he even loaned you all some Jinbei, their traditional garb; it was made of a silky, luxurious fabric and made the evening feel very special. Your Jinbei was a lush purple; Nemona's was a cheerful orange; Penny's was a rich crimson, and Arven's was a forest green. The young boy who had invited you all, Kieran, had yellow, and his older sister, Carmine, had a dark blue.

Kieran's grandparents were so welcoming and sweet. They seemed positively thrilled when their grandson had returned with so many new friends in tow. They took you all into their home as if you were their own grandchildren. The grandmother even spent extra time helping you and Nemona fix your hair up into an elegant side-bun, and the two of you gushed at each other at how amazing you both looked. (Penny's hair was too short for the style, but you suspected that was a relief for her; she already looked supremely embarassed and uncomfortable in the outfit as it was. When the grandmother gave her a pretty wrap to use in her hair instead, though, and you and Nemona told her how nice it looked, she smiled and blushed.) In the background, Carmine had been scowling and grumbling quietly, but it didn't surprise you. When you had arrived here earlier today, the first thing she did when she met you was chew you out and then challenge you to battle. Apparently she had felt she had something to prove. When she'd lost, she had remained bitter towards you. It seemed she wasn't too keen on any of the Naranja students here.

After you'd all finished dressing up, you headed to the shed to gather up the festival masks. It was the most important part of the costume, apparently; the festival was named the Festival of Masks, after all. When the Blueberry siblings had located the box of masks, you'd all gathered round and selected from them; you grabbed one that was pink had a beak. However, there was a problem; it seemed the box was short a mask for the group. Arven had ended up without one.

When Kieran offered to give his mask to Arven instead, though, his sister adamantly refused to let him, insisting it was "first come first serve." The siblings began to bicker, and in order to avoid an awkward situation, Arven spoke up.

"Hey, it's okay. I don't need a mask, it's fine."

The young boy Kieran brushed aside a long lock of dark hair in his face and quietly protested, "B-but, you're our guest, and I-I . . ."

His sister placed a protective hand on his shoulder and said,

"No way, Kiki. You love that dumb ogre mask, anyway, you don't need to give it up for anyone."

The boy trailed off, his eyes sad. Arven stepped a little closer to him and smiled, saying,

"Hey, cheer up, little bud! I'm a tough guy, I don't need a scary mask to keep me safe! I'm scary enough without the mask. Right guys?"

You and Nemona laughed. Penny rolled her eyes and said,

"Suuuuure."

After that, the group walked to the festival. Carmine had led the way, telling you all about the festival's traditions, bragging about how exciting and meaningful it was. Kieran and Arven had trailed a little further behind the group than the rest. While Nemona questioned Carmine about some game called 'Ogre Ousting,' the boys carried on a quiet conversation.

"Hey. Thanks again for offering your mask to me. I really am fine without one, so no worries, but, just wanted to say, I still appreciated you trying to include me."

The Blueberry Academy student nodded shyly and glanced away.

"S-sure . . . I, um, I know what it's like to be left out of things."

Arven frowned. He seemed to study the mask the boy currently had stuck to his head. It had a wide, toothy grin, yellow fangs and horns, a face surrounded by leaves.

"So this ogre guy, from the story. Isn't he the villian? I'm just wondering why you like him enough to wear his mask. Or maybe it's just fun the play the bad guy, huh?"

Kieran shook his head slowly.

"I-I . . . I don't think he's as bad as people make him out to be. I'm sure he's really strong, but . . . I never felt like he was evil when I heard the stories. Maybe just . . . lonely."

Arven raised a brow.

"Lonely?"

Kieran said,

"Yeah! He lives up there on the mountain top, all alone in his cramped little den. Everyone in the village is scared of him, so there's nobody for him to talk to. I think if it was me, I'd be a little cranky too."

Arven remained silent for a while, his expression strangely tense. Eventually, Kieran looked up at him, curious over his silence. Arven quickly smiled at him.

"Well, I tell ya what-- if I do happen to run into this ogre guy of yours, I promise I won't scream and run away like everyone else does."

The boy looked at him with wide, yellow eyes.

"You won't?"

Arven nodded, grinning.

"Nope. I'll try to talk to him. Even if he's a bit cranky. Everyone deserves a chance at making some friends, right?"

Kieran smiled, gratitude and awe reflected on his face.

"Yeah!"

He hesitated, then. He added,

"What if . . . um, what if the ogre doesn't feel like talking, though?"

Arven shrugged.

"Ehh, I guess then I'll . . . well, maybe I'll invite him to a quiet picnic."

"A picnic?"

"Yeah. I always feel less cranky after I've had somethin' to eat. And once somone's had a bite of one of my amazing, perfect sandwiches, they always wanna be buds with me!"

Kieran laughed a little, and you could see in his eyes that his heart looked a little lighter. Arven replied,

"What? I'm being serious!"
