ottaburas crossed my dash again and i couldn't resist making some of my own this time, since i saw the lineart that @sundownsquad provided. i decided to give these guys to the ghost squad in their post-war/sanctuary era!

Chestnut, a young male belonging to Harlow. Harlow's first reaction to seeing ottas was to borrow a local saying and call them 'an odd chestnut'. The name stuck (and became much more affectionate). He's old enough to have finished training but his steady nature is what's really responsible for his 'bombproof' reputation. He has yet to be bothered by anyhting, as far as they can tell, and is far more likely to explore a new thing with his mouth than feel any fear. Patterned after a bay roan with a badger face and I used kumuology on dA's roan brush for his coat.

Ruusaan is a female a few months old that Tally's been hand-raising (aka spoiling her rotten). She's too smart for her own good, which is mostly expressed through her general disinterest in training. Getting her to obey relies heavily on her wanting to go along with the idea, and there's no such thing as making her carry cargo. Despite that, she's generally a very calm individual who reserves trouble-making for when she's bored. I was going to give some spots to Chestnut but then I thought they'd look much better on a dark coat!

Liberty is the sweetest and most affectionate of the bunch. She'd be happy to quite literally be in Boom's pocket, and if not given sufficient attention, will try to put herself there so he has to look at her. He lets her get away with more than he should and they both know it. She was bought to help with plowing the fields and hauling the produce from them, but ended up mostly being there as a companion for Boom. He's trained her to help him get up if his prosthetic leg breaks, and she's happy to fetch him things (even if they all end up with teeth marks). She's also the favourite of Sanctuary's kids, and she's quite happy to let them feed her treats all day long and use her as a jungle gym (as long as they don't pull at her whiskers or ears, and they know to be polite).

Snack, short for Snack Sized, was originally thought to be a baby otta, like Ruusaan. When he didn't grow up any bigger, though, the Ghosts realised that he was fully grown at half the size of the others. One of the shinies quipped that he was snack sized and the name stuck. He decides early on that Cav is his human and they're not to be separated under any circumstances. Cav isn't convinced about that (neither is his wife for that matter) until he realises just how comforting Snack's presence can be, and trains him as a service dog. Taking Snack to the store can be a real adventure due to his size, but he's polite, and the locals are both familiar with ottas and rather fond of Sanctuary's citizens, so he's welcome in most places.

Ceru, short for Cerulean due to his blue colour, is Ray's BFF. She thinks he's the coolest otta ever, and who's to tell her otherwise? They go hiking a lot, exploring the area around Sanctuary, and occasionally fishing, foraging, or packing back hunted meat. Ceru's gotten very good at fishing from the river nearby, and Ray couldn't be prouder of him. The only trouble is getting him out of the water... and keeping him from shaking water all over anybody in the vicinity. They're the unofficial lifeguards when others are at the river, as Ceru is faster and more manuverable in the water than human swimmers or boats. He's got a sixth sense for digging up mushrooms.

Nox never does anything halfway, and that includes their choice (and decoration) of otta, Regina. She's by far the fastest in the area, which combined with an innate surefootedness and responsiveness to scent training, makes them a crack team when it comes to tracking and search-and-rescue. She'll only work with Nox, though, and bites anyone else who touches her without offering a treat first. Nox has done nothing to curb this behaviour. When SAR help isn't needed, she's winning races, being an animal ambassador to people who have never seen an otta before, herding livestock, and generally having the run of the lake in her downtime. She's painted with a mangōpare on her back leg for strength and courage, and a puhoro on her front leg for speed and agility.

Alor is the largest of Sanctuary's ottas, and the most protective. His primary role is a guardian of both livestock and people. Karla takes him on all the long-distance trips the other Ghosts take, and the rest of the time, he wanders about as he pleases between the livestock areas. He learned to open the gates he couldn't jump over, and at least he's polite enough to nudge them closed after he's through. Affectionate bites are nothing out of the ordinary, and tend to draw some blood even when he doesn't mean them to, so it's fortunate that aggressive biting isn't so much a thing - he flings the offender halfway across Sanctuary instead. He's partially deaf so people learn to make sure that he knows they're approaching him.

Quantum was named before she came to them, and nobody's really sure how she got that name. Shay sometimes takes after Nox and paints his own wave-pattern tattoos on her legs, but she does tend to roll in whatever water or mud she comes across, so he reserves the paint for special occasions. She's the strongest otta and also the most stubborn. Shay is the only one who can get her to do anything. He says it's because he's best at scratching her favourite spot under her chin and evidently she agrees. Even though she would do anything for him (and vice versa), other humans are none of her concern. She's a one-guy type of otta. She's got the smallest bit of white around her toes and the edges of her ears, at the tip of her tail, and a heart-shaped spot on her nose.

Ladybird belongs to Cav's wife, Seku. They're a pair of easygoing older ladies who enjoy taking it slow. She's also the otta responsible for guarding the daycare! When she's not napping with her head in Seku's lap, anyway, because they both very much enjoy that. Neither of them would let anyone but Seku ride her, that only occasionally, and they always take it slow. Seku loves her as a companion and needs nothing more from her. I couldn't draw her brindle stripes to my satisfaction so I used a tiger stripe brush from critelli on dA!

Rating cows from Medieval manuscripts because I fucking love cows

I love cows and I love Medieval manuscripts. Is there something else I have to say to justify this post? I hope not.

Ashmole Bestiary. England, early 13th century.

This is a cow for sure. I love her soft lineart - the artist knew what he was doing. Her reddish coat is Accurate, but she has curly hair, for some reason. This cow doesn't seem ready for the hardships of motherhood. She looks worried that her calf misses her udder completely, chomping on something that should definitely not be chomped. I empathize with her, to some extent.

Ortus sanitatis. Germany, 15th century

A very skinny cow. She might be very young. This is probably the first time she's been milked, you can see from her face that she does not know what to expect, but she definitely does not like it. And tbh, I myself would not trust that little, lingering hand. However, I don't like that she's so skinny. Cows should be round, friendly and huggable. Her owners might be Poor, but Grass Is Free, you know? Let her eat something!

BL Harley 4751, f. 23. England, 13th century.

A very common rendition of a cow. I have seen at least two other illustrations like this one. She is Accurate, but her horns are red too. That was lazy, my dear artist. I love her fluffy tail and her tongue too. Cows have beautiful tongues. However, she does not look soft, but very sleek. I give her an extra point for that 'vacca' in the caption - it makes everything 1000 times better. 'Vacca' is a very funny word in Italian.

This cow is technically not Medieval, but she gets a free pass because I know her personally. Her name is Auðumbla. I usually love Auðumbla, but here she looks like she's pulling a gigantic prank on poor Búri by spilling all her milk all over the universe, and he doesn't seem to appreciate it. Bad Auðumbla. Apart from this, she looks Soft.

De natura animalium. Italy, 15th century.

If Auðumbla was not Medieval, this bad boy here is not a Cow. He is a Bull. However, if I was driving past a field I would still point at him and scream "Cow!!" to my mum, so he too gets a free pass. I love him. He has kind, expressive eyes. He seems very polite as if he would let you cross the street without honking at you. He also looks squishable but firm. He is probably the most beloved animal on the farm. I love you, Kind Bull.

Bohun Psalter and Hours. England, 14th century

This cow is literally me if I was a Cow. Wrapped in a blanket, with a book and flowers all around. This cow knows how to read. Cows should not be able to read, but I guess she followed her dreams and never gave up on them. Her eyes are so expressive, and kind. I cannot express the range of emotions this little Scholar Cow evokes in me. She also has a good sense of style. Good job, little Cow!

Not sure what this is supposed to be. A cow? A horse? A 'corse'? Anyway, this looks like a little push cart with a stuffed animal on top. Really doesn't look like a cow. And why is she on a leash? Or maybe it is her who's keeping that square-headed creature on a leash? Is it, perhaps, her pet? In that case, we love our independent queen. But I still have to say: I have no idea what this is. Sorry, weird-looking maybe-cow.

Hello! After scrolling your blog, I must say, you have a very unique and pretty art style, i absolutely adore it. You have fantastic art I must say. Any inspiration for it?

OMGGGGG this is such a sweet message to open up to, thank you for this compliment, I take it as a high honor to have people wonder about my inspirations hahaha

As for the big one, it's honestly the man himself, Hirano. There's just so much of his approach to art that I've been so taken with ever since I first discovered it. His rendering is utterly jaw-dropping, and his sense of unique style never fails to inspire me. I love how distinctive and evocative all his trademarks are - all the duster coats and the creative ways he uses them in his panel compositions, the iconic facial expressions (I especially love how he draws scared faces and the way he draws teeth on characters when they're in a predatory position in the story, human or vampire) and his methods of hatch shading and rendering. More than anything, though, I love his sense of posing and character design and how those interact. His art has such a striking marriage of those two things and the aforementioned panel composition. His art inspired me to try to understand anatomy better and the elements of character design that might allow me to one day compose something that has the sheer level of coolness that bleeds from every page of his art, especially the title pages. There's such aesthetic maximalism to all his characters. That, and I love his use of heavy lines, sharp, angular edges in his lineart, and just GAAAAHHHHH I love his art so damned much. It makes me turn to my own art and say "how can I make this cooler," and especially in the aspect of visual storytelling that one can accomplish with a character's design. I'm aimlessly rambling but this is really the biggest one.

Beyond this, I've drawn from a really random grab bag of interests. There are a handful of artists online throughout the years whose work I've really enjoyed and found evocative inspiration in. Back in my teenhood I was enamored with the Nuzlocke comic community, with entries like this one and especially this one and the artists respectively, and even attempted one of my own that is now lost to the sands of the internet's endless aether (but if I'm being honest, I'd probably be wildly embarrassed if somebody found those, hahaha). Beyond this, it's a hodgepodge of inspirations like graphic novels and video games I've been super into. Halo, Borderlands, Fallout and the like all get a nod here, in that order. Zemira herself is basically an ODST. I also tend to absorb elements from more cartoon-leaning elements that I really like from random artists that cross my dash. I'd also give a nod to the 2003 Star Wars: The Clone Wars series in terms of the way it exaggerates certain features for stylistic ease.

How to draw chibi characters

Want to know how to draw chibi versions of your favorite character but don't know how? Well, you've come to the right place! I'll give a quick and simple tutorial on drawing almost any character with just a few simple steps. Without further ado, I think we should start with the demonstration!

First, we've got to decide who we're drawing. Their pose and expression will rely on their personality, interests, and/or what they're doing. I chose my persona for this demonstration. They're going to be doing a simple standing pose for now.

Now, the next move is to actually start drawing them. First, draw a circle. It's okay if it isn't perfect, just make sure it has the general shape of a circle. Then add a cross that will help indicate where the character will be facing.

Next is to add the cheek and ear. the cheek is often found just below the lower section of the cross and connects all the way to the bottom of the vertical line. For the ear, the top section will only reach the top of the horizontal line and will go down about halfway to the lower half of the circle.

Once you've done that, draw a bean-shaped section at the bottom of the head. This will serve as the body. You can add guidelines as demonstrated below to help guide you where the arms and legs are facing and where the body is facing.

Next is to add the arms and legs. Personally, I like to make the arms and legs resemble a cylinder. And I simplify the fingers to little stubs that hint at their hand gestures.

Next are the details. Know that chibi characters are small and simple. You can add as many or as little details as you want. But for most cases, the more chunky, blocky, and simplified the design, the cuter it'll look. So try to avoid adding too many small hair strands, super detailed elements on clothes, and realistic hands/feet.

Here, I drew the eyes of the character. The eyes are big and take up roughly 1/2 of the head. the center should be along the horizontal axis and should be roughly the same distance from the center of the cross.

As I mentioned before, make areas like the hair simple. Clump up the hair into different sections and simplify it.

For the clothes do the same. Section it into different parts and try to minimize the details.

Finally, do the cleanup. Making the lineart thick is a personal choice, but many artists draw chibi characters with thin lineart. It's your decision whether or not you want to use thin or thick lineart.

Now that it's clean, add some colors and render!

Tips to remember:

Don't add too many details

Make the fae big and expressive

To add, drawing chibi will also depend on personal preferences. This is just a simple guide on how to draw the basics of chibi characters. Chibi can be understood differently. Some like their chibi characters to have smaller limbs and bodies that are the same height as their head. There are somewhere the arms are bigger than the rest of the body. You can also draw your characters to have longer legs. You can also make the body and limbs a bit longer where the body is about 2 heads tall.

In reality, chibi is a pretty general term. Chibi characters are usually between two and four heads tall. They are often used on merchandise for popular anime series. With huge, distinct facial expressions, they are also useful when good at creating a fun or cute atmosphere.

1. How many different sketches do you usually have until your piece is finished?

If it’s a commission (that doesn’t require drawing the exact reference), I have 4 stages of sketching:

Stage 1. Ideas sketching. I do stickmans and general shapes that are most understandable to me. Doesn’t have to be clean, just enough for me to understand how I will place my elements in the paper, how movement flows, how the posture will look, etc etc. Here are some of my stage 1 sketches:

This one’s for a collab painting I will do with a friend. That’s our sketches while conceptualizing.

These are my concept sketches for the recent splatoon commission I did. For commissions, I always do 3-6 sketches of different poses when given freedom, which I will then present to my client and see which one they like best and I’ll go with it (bc I’m indecisive too LMAO)

Stage 2: Presentable concept sketch. When I have these ideas pinned down, I’ll make a more presentable version of the sketch to send to the client. That means visible body shape & posture, key facial expressions, mvt indications, etc. Following the splatoon commission sketches, here’s their stage 2:

Stage 3: Initial sketch on paper. When the client chose which posing is best, I’ll sketch it down on paper. I use rule of thirds, mark the margins, make sure the proportions are aligned and correct before I do the last stage (bc it’s going to be tedious to readjust everything once I’ve noticed it’s not centered or smth like that). I forgot to take a picture of the other posing’s stage 3, but it’s like this!

Stage 4: Lineart sketching. DO NOT jump straight to hard lineart, it will leave marks or stains when you erase. Sketch lightly first with an HB or 2B or any B pencils, honestly it’s in your hand’s pressure control and how you hold the pencil, but personally HB or 2B is good. This stage can be messy as long as the main lineart is shaping.

After that, I can start 1st stage of lineart! But this is all when I do commissions or serious pieces tho. If I’m sketching for fun, I just do 1 sketch then straight to lineart ^^

2. A piece from this year that you’re really proud of?

Honestly, I’m still proud of my concept art projects for my 2D and 3D animation subjects! When I look at it, it makes me feel like a professional concept artist☺️ It’s a warm feeling seeing my old OCs drawn like they’re posted in artstation or something hahah.

3. Something you would like to improve on?

I would like to improve on a lot of things, but getting started & staying consistent is mostly my obstacle when I want to improve. I want to learn how to draw:

Hair and different types of it. Hair is the thing I hate looking at in my drawings bc I can’t get it to look how I want it to.

Backgrounds - landscapes, cityscapes, seascape, etc (and how to be patient drawing it bc I always give up halfway LMAO)

Reflective surfaces

Different textures (fuzzy texture, chrome, rough, etc)

Bokeh & blurs (traditionally, on paper)

Shadows of two or more light sources crossing together.

Plants and flowers. Always so embarrassing to draw a piece with flora in it bc they look so elementary level LMAO I absolutely love flowers, but god have you seen my “Unbosom” artwork, I was NOT proud of how I drew petunias ;w;

Animals. I will not be showing my pathetic attempts in sketching a horse from memory, but you can imagine how horrible it was for me to want to improve on drawing animals.

Musical instruments. Still a struggle, especially when instruments are drawn from a different angle like that one time I did the Issei Noro digital fanart.

Fire and water.

4. What’s something you hope people notice when looking at your art?

I hope people notice the composition! I’m trying to be mindful of space, visual weight, and shapes of the movement or the posing, they contribute a lot to how to make a drawing less static or empty looking. But honestly, if the viewers didn’t notice, that’s fine ^^

They then cross their arms and say "girl idt its (caps) moving anymore" as the visor emojis switch to the fire and two different question marks. In the final panel, they hold out their hands with an expression of distress, visor emojis now the exclamation mark, raised hand, and stop sign, and say "girl u can stop biting", with "girl" and "stop biting" in caps. The third panel also shows the Garages, who have blue sideshaved hair and are surrounded by blue fire, angrily biting at the png of the melted Coin/Boss.

The Magic are a person with dark brown skin and dark green, braided hair, wearing a light yellow ranger's uniform and a pink wizard's cloak and hat. They stand next to a tree and speak into a walkie-talkie, saying "the eagle has left the nest!" with a look of delight. The comic then shows the Spies, who are a person with pale skin and black hair with lavender streaks, wearing a trenchcoat, fedora, scarf, and sunglasses, so their features are almost entirely obscured. They are also holding a walkie-talkie, and say "*khhkht* roger that. alert the agents." *khhhkht*" The Magic turn to them with a look of annoyance, throwing their hands in the air and saying "will you stop that?" (stop that is italicized). The Spies are then drawn in only lineart, with the lines being partially erased and the caption/sound effect "*abscond*".
