I saw "The Great Gatsby" musical yesterday with my friends and holy shit. I think my life has never been the same. I got my playbill signed by everyone in the main cast besides John Zdrojeski. Which makes me a bit sad :(

It was so good. I definitely recommend going to go see it. Yesterday fueled my theatre obsession in the best way possible.

It’s got the same feeling as the song above. I don’t quite know what the lyrics mean, but I feel them in my soul. This band’s music is also amazing - I highly recommend them as well.

Stardust Chords by Greta Van Fleet

I guess I’m on a roll with songs that make you feel like you’re standing at the edge of the Earth haha … this song is much like the two above it. It feels like an entire ethereal experience. I also highly recommend this band.

Diamonds in the Coal by The Badlees

I love this song and this band because they’re local for me and it feels like they’re singing about me and the places I’ve seen/been. This song is the perfect example of that.

Alabama by Bishop Gunn

I love the storytelling in this song. It took me a couple listens to get what the twist was, but it was surely an ‘aha’ moment once I realized it.

D: Decoration MATTHEW

1. how would they decorate a house if they had one under their name?

The best way I can describe the way Matthew decorates the Delaney house is...The Addams Family meets the Great Gastby.

2. how would they decorate their child’s room?

Matthew tried very hard to decorate the baby's room, it was very like...old victorian with a little wooden crib and rocking chair, lots of billowy curtains and all that...but as soon as the baby got old enough to want things that went out the window. Now it's just a mess and Matthew very much wishes his dumb daughter would let him decorate it again.

3. how do they decorate their own room?

OLD stuff, lavish stuff, big bed with lots of pillows. That kind of stuff.

4. what type of clothes and accessories do they wear?

tacky 3-piece suits, khaki shorts, aloha shirts, bow ties, gold bracelets, rings, all those good things. You know what this man wears, you've seen him.

5. do they like makeup/nail/beauty trends?

Not really. He likes makeup/nail/and beauty but not..."trends". He's very much a...I'm going to wear whatever I want regardless of if it is in fashion or not. I look good and that is all that matters.

G: Gorgeous MIKE

1. what is their most attractive external feature?

That is a hard question for Mike. I always believed that if he took better care of himself and wasn't so smelly all the time he wouldn't be half bad looking. But he doesn't so he always looks like...what he looks like. That being said, MAYBE his hair? But then again it's never brushed and always dirty...but the color is pretty. That counts for something.

2. what is the most attractive part of their personality?

Hmm....Uh...

3. what benefits come with being their friend?

I can't think of anything. he does a really good job of making people not want to be his friend. I guess the benefit of being friends with Mike is you'll always look better by comparison.

4. what parts of them do they like and dislike?

Mike does not like himself very much. He's a bundle of self hatred and self sabotage mixed with a healthy dose of pessimism, nihilism, and blames it all on the world around him... so he has absolutely no drive to better himself. He is terrible, he knows it and he deserves it. So he hates just about everything about himself. He does think he's got a pretty chill vibe though...when he feels like it.

5. what parts of others do they envy?

He envies those that have joy and happiness in their lives even though he COULD have that too if he let himself...but he won't.

J: Joy CHARLOTTE

1. what makes them happy?

Charlotte is typically a very happy person. Just in general. Even when she's sad or something is bothering her she does her very best to look at the bright side and not get too down. That being said, things that make her happy. Simple things, like hanging out with her stupid baby who she finds absolultley hilarious. Going out on the town with matt and making other people look like fools. You know, those kinds of things. She just loves living life and meeting interesting people, that is what makes her the happiest.

2. who makes them happy?

Her family. Not her parents, her new family. Like I said before she thinks her baby is hilarious and she even finds some small amusement in "watching" mike make a fool of himself on a daily basis. AND of course, Matthew. He is a bit of a ham and she does wish he'd be a bit more sincere about things, but she is so fond of that idiot.

3. are there any songs that bring them joy?

Lots of songs. Since losing her eyesight music has become a huge thing for her. Not playing it or even singing so much, she just loves laying in the sun and listening to other people make music. Her favorite song is As the World Falls Down from the movie Labyrinth.

4. are they happy often?

OH she is happy a good 90% of the time. She has a LOT to be upset about but she decided a long time ago that it is too much effort to be miserable all the time and there are more things to be happy about.

5. what brings them the most joy in the world?

probably laying naked in the woods

Soundtrack Analysis - The Great Gastby

Today I will be giving some of my thoughts on the soundtrack to this scene from The Great Gatsby, and how it uses the subversion of genre to convey a mood and a theme. 

The genre of music.

The genre is the most important aspect of this part of the score, because, for all intents and purposes, there is almost no genre to be found. Not consistently, anyway. The scene starts off with loud big-band, swing and jazz music to guide you into the context of the film: 1920s New York. As soon as the character enters the door, however, the scene changes into a combination of club music, house music and pop music. These genres are the most common at parties and dance-clubs you’d go to in the modern day. These genres are what most people will instantly think of when they think of a party the size of one of Gatsby’s. I think its fair to say that had the music stuck exclusively to period appropriate genres it wouldn’t have denoted the same level / type of emotion than music they are already contextually familar with does. 

Instruments used.

The instruments change from horns to more modern day synthesizers. Which may be the biggest difference between the period appropriate music and the music that was used in the later part of the scene. Synthesizers were not even thought of in the 1920s and thus should have no right to work in such a scene. The cultural significance of the sound of a synthesizer in the head of a modern day audience member is what allows this scene to work so well. 

The drums too are pumping thick house drums. This is also a cultural piece of donotation as well, but works two-fold. The drums are associated with house music and clubs, yes, but they are also naturally pumping, driving and dance-worthy. The use of such drums in both settings can be seen as a testament to how well they correlate with dancing even without the cultural significance they imply. The use of them here, therefore, is more complex than cultural denotation, though that is a huge part of why they were used. The party has to seem huge, has to have hundreds of people dancing all in a very large house. The idea of having something like big band playing while supposedly hundreds of people are losing their minds may make sense to someone from the '20s but it doesn’t make sense to someone raised in the modern world. The difference in contextual musical discourse means that in order to have the scene translate for a modern audience, a different musical and instrumental choice needed to be made even if the inclusion of instruments like synthesizers and synthesized drums are not period-accurate. 

In fact, throughout the piece the use of a sampler is employed as well. Both for the inclusion of the baroque organ playing and the inclusion of swing and big-band samples throughout the latter part of the piece. This helps to keep the underlying historical period lightly in the minds of those watching as to not entirely draw them out of the experience.

How does the music contribute to how the audience feels during the scene?

In essence the music is trying to convince the audiences brain of the size and feeling of the parties at Gatsby’s. The use of generic subversion is used exclusively, as far as I can tell, to this end. 

Is the music effective?

I think it is. That said, it would depend on who you are. I think that even though I picked up on this and it took me a bit out of the film, I still couldn’t change how I saw Gatsby’s parties. They just seemed bigger because of the song selection. I also think that an audience member who may not be as familiar with soundtracks, film, or post-production audio, may not notice the change due to how well the film blends the genres and instruments together in order to create the mood they’re going for. 

It is essentially one of the best examples of post-modern soundtrack composition. Its something that Baz Luhrmann excels at and another example of his is Moulin Rouge.
