A moviescreening seems to be taking place on Floor 8!! How fun!! Seems that Fishook has also simmered down from his usual active,boisterous self to watch it with me- I MEAN MARY!!!!!!!!

What Went Wrong: An In-Depth Analysis of Muriel's Route

Below are the opinions of an uneducated individual on what could’ve left the majority of The Arcana audience dissatisfied. I will explore the plot, tropes, themes and morals of the Muriel route and try to explain what may have gone wrong. I will be treating the game as a novel since it's advertised as one.

1. Consistency. If you are unfamiliar with the chekhov's gun; it's a story writing principle that dictates each element you introduce should come into play (foreshadowing). Now let's start with a few story beats that were later abandoned or concluded in an underwhelming manner:

Muriel's blanket

Muriel's magic mark (on his back)

Forest spirit (spirits in general)

Lucio's upbringing

Circumstances of MC's death

Figurines/whittling/charms

Muriel's blanket is teased to be a tapestry, which would tie in with his later fascination with them later on, as it had been the only thing he had left from his past. MC neither sees nor comments on the blanket, we only know it exists thanks to other playthroughs and short stories.

Magic marks are an important point in the game. Every main route emphasises on how it affects the chosen LI. It's reveal is important in a way that it serves as a passage to a new act where the reader explores magic and Arcana pantheon as they are a monumental part of the overall worldbuilding. This exact point applies to the Heart of the Forest and how spirits interact with the world around them as well.

Whittling and Charm making are the only hobbies we get from Muriel's isolated life, their introduction helps the reader humanise the character by giving us a crumb of his everyday life. It's never mentioned again after the scene where MC asks him what he does. He doesn't idly whittle during their journey and charms only come to play in an offhanded reference during reversed ending.

The other two are also ignored but I will touch on Lucio later on.

Why do these matter? A few abandoned plot points don't make or break the story but on a grander level it hinders the audience investment. When we read, we like to think the details we notice will come to play eventually, we like recognizing references that were introduced earlier. I'm sure I don't need to give examples on this one, I don't think anyone will disagree.

2. Themes. Thematic influences this story utilized are all over the place, and it seems to me like it stems from the improper application of certain tropes;

Some of these tropes tackle themes such as;

Slavery

PTSD

Survivor's Guilt

Genocide

I'm not going to try to explain How to Write any of these topics. I'm not remotely qualified. I think it's better if I just give examples from popular media because whether you know how to write it or not, you can still understand when it's written well;

AtLA deals with genocide and survivor's guilt. It's in the name; The Last Airbender. Aang is the sole survivor of a culture he'd only had an opportunity to engage in for a handful of years. He left them with a childish tantrum and now they're gone forever. I can't think of another mainstream series that shows the gruesome reality of war and genocide better than this one.

When Muriel realizes his true heritage and loses Khamgalai is the point of the story where Luke sees his family's farm burned down, Aang goes back to the air temple, Treebeard walks in on the demolished part of the forest. (The inciting incident)

(Could also have been forest spirit’s death but it was too early in the story so I don’t consider it a missed opportunity.)

Up until this point the hero has their doubts, they're going through the motions but they are either underestimating the enemy or they're a passive protagonist. Either way, this is the point where the hero has to take the reins of the story. What purpose does this serve in Muriel's route instead? It simply validates Muriel's beliefs. He's useless, he isn't strong enough. We as the reader need a point to see where the hero takes a step to drive the story forward or whoever takes that step will steal the spotlight, it will be their story. As it is, this is the point where it ceases to be Muriel’s story.

PTSD got the worst end of the deal. Since Dragon Age fandom has a huge overlap with the Arcana I will use Fenris as an example; for those who are unfamiliar with the character, Fenris is an escaped slave. After the sex scene he vividly describes an experience that most people can easily identify as a flashback. The game never tells us that he was abused, it doesn’t show us him having a panic attack but it shows us that whatever transpired between him and the player character clearly triggered an unpleasant memory.

Arcana tries and initially succeeds to do something similar. We see that the character is untrustworthy, sensitive to touch, easily agitated, can’t sleep outside of his perceived safe environment… It introduces us the cause later on and the story has two options, each will drastically change the moral of the story:

Remember these as they will be important later on

Portray Muriel fighting as a bad thing; You can’t fight violence with violence angle or the fact that the villain’s forcing him into a situation where he’ll have to fight again makes the villain all the more intimidating.

Portray Muriel fighting as a good thing; He has the means to defeat the villain and he just needs encouragement. With great power comes great responsibility. By not fighting he willingly condemns everyone to an awful fate and that he is selfish.

I’d like to take a second to explore the 1. Option, I feel like the game may have intended to implement that idea but failed because of the implementation of Morga and choices presented for the player character: Morga is an Old-Soldier, these characters are often push the hero out of their comfort zone in an aggressive way towards complacency, they are a narrative foil to the mentor. For the first option to work the story had to show Khamgalai acting as a mentor and having the protagonists challenge Morga’s teachings(see Ozai-Iroh). As it is, Morga’s actions are never put under scrutiny (narratively) and her death feels hollow as a result. She didn’t sacrifice herself for the heroes due to her guilt, she died because she felt a moment of sympathy for her son which wasn’t explored before, she showed no intention to change nor any doubt.

It is clear the game choose 2. Option, it is a controversial choice given Muriel’s mental condition and the game is acutely aware of this, which is likely why Muriel’s PTSD will get carefully scraped from the story from here on out. (I won’t address other instances where his trauma wasn’t taken into account, I feel like this explanation should cover them as well.)

3. Morals. Every story, whether the author intends it or not, has a moral. The Villain most often acts against that moral and in turn can change the hero's perspective. Morals are not ideals; the morality of Killmonger isn’t that marginalised people should fight for their rights, it is that vengeance is just. Whether it’s right or wrong can be debated but what makes an ideal the moral of the story is in the portrayal. How the narrator depicts the events, how people around the heroes react... all are a part of portrayal.

The story choosing “Muriel fighting is a good thing” earlier puts in the foundation of a moral. The story tells us Muriel has to fight, it’s the right thing to do. He has to be brave for the people he loves.

This choice affects how his past actions will be perceived; now, him escaping the arena to save himself is cowardly, abandoning Morga is cowardly.

The story tells us it wasn’t, but shows us that it was. This is the end of the midpoint of the story, at this point we need to have a good grasp on what we should perceive as wrong or right for us to feel invested. If we zig-zag between the morals we won’t know which actions we should root for. But more than that, the conclusion will not feel cathartic as it will inevitably demonstrate the opposing ideals clashing at its climax.

Villain doesn't necessarily have to be sympathetic and Muriel's route makes no effort to make him as such, but they need to be understandable. What danger does Lucio pose to the status quo, what makes him a compelling villain? Whether he conquers Vesuvia or not doesn’t drastically affect Muriel’s way of life, he’s been in hiding for years. He doesn’t threaten to steal MC’s body, Muriel is not compelled to pick up arms to save his beloved. He wants to protect the people from going through what he’s been through, right? That is what the story wants us to think. But what has he been through? Fighting was his choice, Lucio tricked him into it. Lucio later tricked Morga, his own mother, to save his own hide. This tells us that Lucio is a manipulator, but he doesn’t manipulate his way into Vesuvia, he barges in with deus ex machina monsters. He doesn’t demonstrate his skills as a tactician by making deals with neighbouring kingdoms to get their armies. We don’t know his strengths therefore we don’t know his weaknesses. If he seems to be losing he can just conjure a giant dragon to burn everything down, we just can’t know. That is why the application of deus ex machina is highly taboo, the victories don’t feel earned and defeats feel unfair.

4. Tone. Playing with the genre is not uncommon and a game such as Arcana has many opportunities to do so. It is a romance story, everything else is the back-drop. The tone works best when its overall consistent but tonal changes act as shock for the audience to keep them engaged and keeping one tone indefinitely gets us desensitized. We can’t feel constant misery if we are not made to feel tinges of hope in between. Good examples of dramatic tonal change (that I can think of): Mulan - arriving at the decimated village, La Vita e Bella - the father’s death, M*A*S*H - death of Hawkeye’s friend. Two of these examples are mostly comedy which is why this tonal shift affects us so, it was all fun and games until we are slapped in the face with the war going on. There are no one liners in those scenes, the story takes a moment to show appropriate respect to the dead, it gives its characters time to digest and come to terms with loss. Bad examples are the majority of Marvel movies.

In Muriel’s route there’s never such a thing, Muriel has a panic attack and MC kisses him. This unintentionally tells us, the genre being romance, that the panic attack only served to further MC’s advances. It tells us that he’s never had the control of his life and it’s yet again stripped from him by the decisions of player character. This is not the only instance this happens. The story shoe-horns in multiple cuddle sessions between important plot beats. And it does the exact opposite during a moment where he is having a heart-to-heart with the person he loves by having the ghost of Morga appear to give an ominous warning/advice.

When he runs off during masquerade it’s built up to be an important plot point. Muriel will finally face his past, he’s been running away from it all along, and he will have an opportunity to be accepted back in. MC is supportive but ultimately, it’s meant to be Muriel's moment. But as I mentioned above this is not his story anymore so he’s not given any time to address his problems, instead a ghost appears to tell him what he needs to do, again. Because we need to wrap the story up, we don’t have time.

Remember how I said the 2 Options will be important later on, well here we are at the very end. Upright and reversed.

“Portray Muriel fighting as a bad thing”

This suggests that the triumph of Muriel won’t be through violence. Maybe he will outsmart Lucio in a different way, he won’t play his games anymore. This option suggests that Lucio will not be beaten by his own terms.

“Portray Muriel fighting as a good thing”

This option concludes with Muriel finally overcoming his reservations on violence and doing what's right to save the people he loves. And bringing justice to people who Lucio hurt.

If you are wondering why the upright ending feels random, this is likely why. The ending plays out as if the story was building on the 1st option while we spent chapters upon chapters playing out the 2nd one. It is unearned.

(The reversed ending, being reversed, also uses Option 1 path but in which Muriel can’t achieve his narrative conclusion)

The Coliseum is filled with people who are on their side against Lucio’s shadow goons. Because we can’t have people being on Lucio’s side without addressing the duality of human nature, even though it’s an important part of Muriel’s story. The people who watched and enjoyed Lucio’s bloodsport are no more, they are all new and enlightened offscreen. We completely skipped the part where Vesuvia comes to terms with its own complacency and Muriel simply feels at ease because the crowd is cheering on him now. This is what happens when you give the character a chance to challenge those who have been complicit in his abuse (masquerade scene) and completely skip it to move the story along.

Muriel doesn't get justice, ever. The people only love him now because he's fighting for them instead of his own survival. Morga or her clan doesn't answer for the massacre of Kokhuri, Vesuvia doesn't answer for the sick entertainment they indulged in and Lucio doesn't answer for Muriel's enslavement. It is not even acknowledged, nowhere in the story (except the very end of reversed ending, and even then it almost gets him killed so its clearly the wrong thing to do on his part) is a choice presented where Muriel has an opportunity to get any sort of compensation where he instead chooses to move on.

I don’t intend to straw man anyone but this is a sentiment I’ve seen a lot; “It’s a short story, a dating-sim, what do you expect?”

I expect nothing, I’m simply explaining why some people feel how they feel. It is a short dating-sim but it seems to me like it was aiming to be something more by borrowing elements that were clearly far above their weight range to tease something more and under deliver. It is okay to feel content with the story, and it’s okay to feel let down. If we had a unanimous decision on literature we would never be inclined to write our own stories.

Studying the Methods of Sherlock Holmes in Light of this Changing Age: The Hat of Henry Baker

We are all aware of the dazzling and astute deductions made by our dear friend, Sherlock Holmes. As a dull light forces its way through a dirt covered windowpane, we are introduced through Watson's dazzled eyes, to Holmes' mind at work in an abandoned room of Lauriston Gardens. Empty except for an imitation marble fireplace and a dead man, contorted in a depiction of his agonising last moments. Standing aside and looking upon Holmes with a mixture of respect, curiosity, and sheer dumb-foundedness, Watson witnesses as the Great Detective traces around every inch of the mildew dotted walls and dust covered floor, and is at last able to give a full description of the murderer, from his height and boot size to his overly long fingernails. But as the years have passed and technology has pushed forward, is our dear friend able to keep up? Let us explore this question together, as we delve into some of Watson and Holmes' adventures together, dissect some of the most perplexing cases that the foggy streets of London had to offer, and view under the microscope how some of his deductions hold up in this changing age, before the world went all awry.  

Now, to go through each one of his deductions and inferences would be a difficult task without filling a book, so we shall only investigate a single example from his many adventures here. 

Our example is taken from The Blue Carbuncle, whereupon one late December morning, a sharp chill has gripped the Victorian streets of London causing windowpane corners to be thick with the icy frost common on these winter days. Behind one of these windows however, a cosy fire can be found warming the lodgings of 221B Baker Street. As the fire crackles, the light warmth emanating from the fireplace illuminates a scattering of newspapers cast in flickering shadow, showing signs of being recently rifled through and then evidently discarded to no consequence. Within arm's reach of this abandoned heap of papers lays a chez lounge that offers it seems, a great deal of comfort for its occupier, who at the moment is on the cusp of explaining something in deep thought to his colleague, as the latter, sat in an armchair by the fire is looking with interest towards an old hard felt hat he had just been indicated to by his companion.

“ I took the tattered object in my hands and turned it over rather ruefully. It was a very ordinary black hat of the usual round shape, hard and much the worse for wear. The lining had been of red silk, but was a good deal discoloured. There was no maker's name; but, as Holmes had remarked, the initials “H. B.” were scrawled upon one side. It was pierced in the brim for a hat-securer, but the elastic was missing. For the rest, it was cracked, exceedingly dusty, and spotted in several places, although there seemed to have been some attempt to hide the discoloured patches by smearing them with ink.”

Here, we have been given nearly all the data needed to make the inferences that Holmes is able to make (with the minor additions brought up elsewhere in the text). While Watson is unable to determine anything he thinks as noteworthy, handing the hat back to Holmes, let’s first see if you can follow the reasoning behind each of his remarks in the following passage...  

He picked it up and gazed at it in the peculiar introspective fashion which was characteristic of him. “It is perhaps less suggestive than it might have been,” he remarked, “and yet there are a few inferences which are very distinct, and a few others which represent at least a strong balance of probability. That the man was highly intellectual is of course obvious upon the face of it, and also that he was fairly well-to-do within the last three years, although he has now fallen upon evil days. He had foresight, but has less now than formerly, pointing to a moral retrogression, which, when taken with the decline of his fortunes, seems to indicate some evil influence, probably drink, at work upon him. This may account also for the obvious fact that his wife has ceased to love him.”

“My dear Holmes!”

“He has, however, retained some degree of self-respect,” he continued, disregarding my remonstrance. “He is a man who leads a sedentary life, goes out little, is out of training entirely, is middle-aged, has grizzled hair which he has had cut within the last few days, and which he anoints with lime-cream. These are the more patent facts which are to be deduced from his hat. Also, by the way, that it is extremely improbable that he has gas laid on in his house.”

How did you fair when comparing the two passages? Did you follow Holmes reasoning with any success?  Let us see what Holmes has to say for how he got to his immense conclusions and analyse each one in turn...  

“I have no doubt that I am very stupid, but I must confess that I am unable to follow you. For example, how did you deduce that this man was intellectual?”

For answer Holmes clapped the hat upon his head. It came right over the forehead and settled upon the bridge of his nose. “It is a question of cubic capacity,” said he; “a man with so large a brain must have something in it.”  

This is a topic that has been under great debate ever since it reached people ears. Does the size of a person’s head or brain really act as any indication towards their intelligence? Many scientists have argued both sides of this [1,2,3,4,5] but after over a century of confusion, it seems that by the 1990’s and early 2000’s they came to an agreement via the use of MRI imaging of people’s brains [6,7]. The extensive research has determined that Holmes’ statement does hold merit, but in regards to time, was a 19th century detective right to come to this conclusion?

In this time the question of cubic capacity was only a theory, and not a well-researched one. Holmes, it can easily be believed, would have been aware of this theory and following his remarks in the series cautioning of making bricks without clay, he would, or at least should, have known that this theory could not yet be trusted. In light of this it may be that Holmes was just ahead of his game, for it is hardly the first scientific discovery that has been predicted by the great detective [8]. Alternatively, he may have added this in an attempt to just impress Watson; as there was no crime related to this hat, he may have felt the childish urge to embellish his statements, as he has been caught doing before (such as the florid face of a murderer in a Study in Scarlet)[9], in a way to impress his friend whom it can be believed has not visited for some weeks over the winter period.  

“The decline of his fortunes, then?”

“This hat is three years old. These flat brims curled at the edge came in then. It is a hat of the very best quality. Look at the band of ribbed silk and the excellent lining. If this man could afford to buy so expensive a hat three years ago, and has had no hat since, then he has assuredly gone down in the world.”

Fashion is a thing that is far too often overlooked. Trends come and go throughout the seasons and so for a Detective such as Holmes, it is evidently important to keep up. A modern-day comparison of this may arise with any item of clothing or accessory you can think of, for example if Holmes was to be presented with a pair of skinny jeans that are well-worn by countless washes, then it can be suggested that the owner is out of touch with modern mainstream trends, and may point to the decade they grew up in, and so on, in a way that reflects the above quote (skinny jeans became a popular trend in 2006 [10,11,12] but late 2010’s has notably seen an exchange in favour of palazzo trousers and drop-crotch trousers[13,14,15]).

One thing however that Holmes has not stated is the possibility of this item being a gift. Carrying on with the example of the skinny jeans, there raises fewer possibilities. Trousers (and obscurely sized hats), perhaps more than most items of clothing, are rarely gifted to people purely due to having to know the right size, something you can’t ask without giving away the gift, or without risk of insult, so they would have to be brought by either the wearer or someone close enough to know the size to get, such as a close family member or partner.

“Well, that is clear enough, certainly. But how about the foresight and the moral retrogression?”

Sherlock Holmes laughed. “Here is the foresight,” said he putting his finger upon the little disc and loop of the hat-securer. “They are never sold upon hats. If this man ordered one, it is a sign of a certain amount of foresight, since he went out of his way to take this precaution against the wind. But since we see that he has broken the elastic and has not troubled to replace it, it is obvious that he has less foresight now than formerly, which is a distinct proof of a weakening nature. On the other hand, he has endeavoured to conceal some of these stains upon the felt by daubing them with ink, which is a sign that he has not entirely lost his self-respect.”

“Your reasoning is certainly plausible.”

Fashion is brought up again, in a different manner, if Holmes is to make it in the modern age, he not only has to know what is fashionable, but also what counts as a fashion faux par. Although what he says holds grounds for that time [16], in this age the only hats witnessed with securers on belong to infant children in general beach vicinity, accompanied usually with a plastic shovel and spade and someone taking an adorable picture the child will grow up to regret.  

Moving on from Parisian blunders and beach pictures, Holmes states that a decrease in foresight is proof of a weakening nature, or as said earlier, moral retrograde. While there hasn’t been research giving a direct link between the two, it has been shown that illnesses such as anxiety and depression can be correlated with changes in moral upkeep [17], and such illnesses can be caused by problems rooted in drinking and gambling [18], though it should be noted these are not by any means the only causes [19], so whilst Holmes’ reasoning may have been correct with the link between foresight and morale, it was a bit of a stretch for him to claim that this was due to some influence such as drink, as I’m sure the loss of one’s fortune alone would be enough to cause such loss in morale.

“The further points, that he is middle-aged, that his hair is grizzled, that it has been recently cut, and that he uses lime-cream, are all to be gathered from a close examination of the lower part of the lining. The lens discloses a large number of hair-ends, clean cut by the scissors of the barber. They all appear to be adhesive, and there is a distinct odour of lime-cream. This dust, you will observe, is not the gritty, grey dust of the street but the fluffy brown dust of the house, showing that it has been hung up indoors most of the time, while the marks of moisture upon the inside are proof positive that the wearer perspired very freely, and could therefore, hardly be in the best of training.”

Anyone who has had their hair cut to a short length can verify that it finds itself everywhere, so it is not surprising that it gets into the hat’s lining, within the loose hair’s closest proximity, and the adhesiveness of the lime-cream will naturally transfer from his hair to his hat, likely bringing a few strands with it, and while the type of hat mentioned may not be applicable to the general public anymore, hats such as flat caps are (at least for the time being)[20].  

It is also true that different types of dust have different properties, and so cling to fabrics differently[21], and the marks of moisture in Winter would suggest that it either had little to do with the weather (and the man therefore sweats a lot in any season), or that the hat hadn’t been rid of these marks despite treatments being available with the use of lemons or baking soda[22].

“But his wife—you said that she had ceased to love him.”

“This hat has not been brushed for weeks. When I see you, my dear Watson, with a week's accumulation of dust upon your hat, and when your wife allows you to go out in such a state, I shall fear that you also have been unfortunate enough to lose your wife's affection.”

“But he might be a bachelor.”

“Nay, he was bringing home the goose as a peace-offering to his wife. Remember the card upon the bird's leg.”

It should be stated that the card on the bird’s leg reads “For Mrs. Henry Baker”.

This statement to Watson is more interpretation than based on any scientific evidence, however Holmes has had many cases surrounding couples in and out of love, and the attentiveness of a loving partner, and what a partner may do to regain that affection if lost, can be seen throughout many newspapers, stories, and from our very own experiences in life[23]. It is therefore not difficult to conclude that what Holmes says has some level of merit, despite lack of conclusive proof.  

“You have an answer to everything. But how on earth do you deduce that the gas is not laid on in his house?”

“One tallow stain, or even two, might come by chance; but when I see no less than five, I think that there can be little doubt that the individual must be brought into frequent contact with burning tallow—walks upstairs at night probably with his hat in one hand and a guttering candle in the other. Anyhow, he never got tallow-stains from a gas-jet. Are you satisfied?”

“Well, it is very ingenious,” said I, laughing; “but since, as you said just now, there has been no crime committed, and no harm done save the loss of a goose, all this seems to be rather a waste of energy.”

Of course, in this age most houses are lighted with electricity rather than gas, and modern use of a candle would most likely be in creating a certain atmosphere, however candles aren’t what they used to be. Tallow was very commonly used in the making of candle wax, and was composed of animal fats, supposedly giving off a rather unpleasant odour when burned[24]. However nowadays candles are made primarily from beeswax, gel wax, paraffin wax and so on[25], making it unlikely to leave the same smear on the fabric of a hat.  

Conclusion

So, what does this all tell us then? It seems that Holmes is a bit out of touch with the times, what with fashion trends changing multiple times a decade along with ingredients of candles, and I would imagine a great deal of other things (although having lived over a century ago it isn’t much of a surprise!). It also seems that Holmes has a knack for showing off, but as Watson said, there has been no crime committed, and no harm done save the loss of a goose, so perhaps this was the reason for Holmes’ stretches of reasoning. Stretches aside, his method of analytical reasoning and scientific know-how can safely be said for the most part, to hold up to the test of time.  

But this is just one example, so can our dear friend Sherlock Holmes smoke his pipe easy? Not without further study of his other deductions, and he’s made plenty of them! His knowledge on scientific principles, as well as new theories certainly help his case, aiding in his thought process and providing good evidence for his claims, but new theories aren’t always the right theories, and while he may have been lucky in the matter of cubic capacity, he could have been talking as much sense as a hatter!  

Giving him the benefit of the doubt for his fondness of showing off to his friend, and until a further analysis of his other cases can be made, he may rest easy, curled up in his armchair by the warm fireplace, in the belief that his skill as a detective, while needing to be brushed up a little for the passing years, remains more or less intact.

James Monroe Timeline of Slavery:

James Monroe depended on, used and benefited from the institution of slavery profitably. He was the owner of around seventy slaves in his entire life (not all held at once) [x] and like his friend James Madison, Monroe never freed a single slave. Hypocritically, Monroe believed strongly in the abolition and called for the freedom of slaves [x].

1774: Spence Monroe, James Monroe’s father, dies when he is sixteen. Spence left one slave directly, a boy named Ralph [x].

1786: Monroe marries Elizabeth Kortright whose father, a New York merchant, Lawrence Kortright who owned at least four slaves [x]. 

1794: Elizabeth journeyed to New York City to see her dying father. From there, she wrote to her husband about her own inheritance and her brother’s, which she deemed unfair and included “several slaves.”

1796: When James Monroe was in Paris he heard that one of his slaves in Virginia was very ill.  "We lament much the ill health of Tinah...  Indeed she is valuable as a sensible and honest servant, as well as most capable, and whose loss could never be repaired.  We are particularly gratified that she is well taken care of and wants for nothing."

1799: October 15, 1799, as some slave traders tried to transport a group of slaves from Southampton to Georgia, the slaves revolted and killed the traders. According to an article on the subject, a nearby slave patrol responded and killed ten slaves on the spot. The patrol took five slaves alive. They were tried in an oyer and terminer court without the benefit of a jury, four were convicted. The fifth pleaded benefit of clergy and was flogged and branded. Governor James Monroe postponed the slaves' executions to check their identities; he granted a pardon to one, and allowed two to hang. The fourth died in jail from exposure to the cold. The author of the article stated Monroe "help[ed] secure a modicum of civil protection for slaves sentenced to death for capital crimes." Monroe restored the requirement of civil protection for slaves sentenced to death for capital crimes [x] [x].

1800: During his term as governor, in Richmond on the afternoon of Saturday, August 30th, Monroe received information that an insurrection by slaves in the surrounding area would strike the city that night. He communicated with the mayors of Richmond and Petersburg and called out militia to protect the capitol building and public stores of arms and ammunition. Heavy rainfall that made roads and bridges impassable forestalled the beginning of the revolt that night, but Monroe soon received information to convince him that the plan for rebellion was still in place, truthfully, one of the plans was to kidnap him. The legislature was not in session, but with the concurrence of the council on Tuesday, September 2nd the governor alerted all Virginia militia regiments and strengthened the guard on key locations in and around the capital city. He also communicated with local civil officials. The evening of September 2nd the first group of suspects was brought to Richmond from the vicinity of the Henrico County plantation of Thomas H. Prosser, whose slave Gabriel had been named as the primary leader of the intended revolt. 

Under Virginia law of more than a century’s standing, the trial of a slave accused of committing a capital offense was to take place without a jury before a court of oyer and terminer assembled for the purpose. According to a 1786 statute, which was a modified version of a bill in the great revision of the state’s law code that Thomas Jefferson and others had drafted some years earlier, a slave could only be condemned to death by unanimous decision of the court of oyer and terminer, and the state would compensate the owner for the value of the executed slave. The first executions for participation in the conspiracy occurred on Friday, September 12th. During when he was to decide as governor for punishment he wrote a letter to Thomas Jefferson stating himself as being torn between what the legislature wanted–execution–and what he wanted–mercy. In the end, twenty-six slaves including Gabriel were hanged. Monroe tried to get pardons for those condemned for execution but the council only agreed to some of the requests from Monroe for pardons or temporary reprieves. 

1802: The government considered sending insurgent slaves to Sierra Leone. Governor Monroe discovered that under the law of Sierra Leone the slaves would be free as soon as they arrived.  "Still I am persuaded that such was not the intention of the Legislature, as it would put culprits in a better condition than the deserving part of those people...  The ancestors of the present negroes were brought from Africa and sold here as slaves, they and their descendents for ever. If we send back any of the race subject to a temporary servitude with liberty to their descendants will not the policy be mild and benevolent?"

1804: “Slaves are kept under by fear—with them the term is synonimous with respect—Be generous, set them free, & they will insult you.” [x]

1807: “The twenty-fourth article engages that the parties shall communicate to each other the laws which their respective legislatures may enact for the abolition or limitation of the African slave trade, and that they will also use their best endeavors to procure the co-operation of other powers for the complete abolition of that trade. “ [x] “We ought to add that by one of the articles in the treaty a complete co-operation is stipulated for the abolition of the Slave Trade.” [x] James Monroe was negotiating a new treaty with Great Britain. 

1808: “I have in Albermarle 2500. acres of as good land as any in the county & about 30. slaves, with furniture stock &ca. I shod. suppose that my property there was worth three times the amount of the sum desired.” [x]

1810: Albemarle County, Virginia census showed forty-nine enslaved people living at Highland in 1810. At Monroe’s home of Highland, the enslaved included field workers, blacksmiths, carpenters, masons and “house servants” which including valets, a maids, a cook and assistants [x]. The same year, Monroe had offered to sell his Oak Hill estate, nearly two thousand acres in Loudoun County, located ten miles from Leesburg and thirty-five from Alexandria, along with its livestock and all its twenty-five slaves [x].

1814: “The procln. of Cochrane, inciting4 our slaves to rise, & join them, you have probably seen.” [x]

1816: Monroe was part of the American Colonization Society formed in 1816. They found common ground with some abolitionists in supporting colonization. They helped send several thousand freed slaves to the new colony of Liberia in Africa from 1820 to 1840. Monroe wanted to prevent free blacks from encouraging slaves in the South to rebel. The organization also bought land for the freedmen in what is today Liberia. The capital of Liberia was named Monrovia after him as president [x]. 

1817: According to William Seale, he took several slaves with him to Washington D.C. to serve at the White House from 1817 to 1825 [x]. 

1819: The Missouri Territory applied for statehood as a slave state, but that application failed largely due to opposition from the New England states. An amended bill was put forth which proposed gradually eliminating slavery in Missouri, but that just led to two years of bitter debate in Congress. The Missouri Compromise bill resolved the issue, pairing Missouri as a slave state with Maine, a free state, and barring slavery north of latitude 36/30' N forever.

1820: "I do not think that any foreigner can sustain a claim against an African brought directly from Africa as a slave, in our Courts, but that when brought within our jurisdiction he must be free."

1821: "[The international slave trade] is an abominable practice, against which nations are now combining, and it may be presumed that the combination will soon become universal.  If it does the traffic must cease, if it does not it will still be carried on, unless the nations favorable to the suppression unite to crush it, under flags whose powers tolerate it, which would in effect be to make war on those powers." 

1822: Liberia was established as a place where freed American slaves, as well as Africans captured on foreign slave ships, could be resettled. The country named its capital, Monrovia, after Monroe because of his endorsement of the American Colonization Society. [x]

1823: “you have, I presume, seen, by the gazettes, that a motion has been made in the British house of commons, to liberate the slaves in the W. Indies, & been treated with respect by Mr Canning, The effect, should the measure be adopted, on those in the southern states, may be anticipated.” [x]

1824: James Monroe signed a treaty with Great Britain that would have declared the African slave trade a form of piracy, thereby making it easier to fight the slave. He made a plea to the Senate, but they did not ratify the agreement. “Should this convention be adopted, there is every reason to believe that it will be the commencement of a system destined to accomplish the entire abolition of the slave trade… [Other nations  will  follow the United States and Britain]  The crime will then be universally proscribed as piracy, and the traffic be suppressed forever.” Also: “I forward also a copy of the documents, relating to the negotiations, with the British government, for the suppression of the slave trade.” [x]

1826: Two slaves named George and Phebe risked it and fled [x]. The duo ran away from Highland in July 1826 [x], and Monroe placed an advertisement in the local newspaper (below) for July 15th [x], offering a ten dollar reward for their return. It’s unknown of they reached freedom. Highland slaves endured not harsh conditions but instability caused by frequent transfers between Monroe’s two properties due to work needs [x].

1827: “The sale of my slaves, &ca, in Albemarle, it is expected will take place in Novr. so that it will be very pa[in]ful to me, to attend there, at the next meeting You shall however hear from me on the subject.” [x]

1828: Because of United State government not paying Monroe for his positions, he fell into enormous dept. Monroe began selling the farmland at his Highland any many of Monroe’s enslaved men, women, and children were dispersed south. Those sold went to a cotton plantation called Casa Bianca in Jefferson County, Florida. To the buyer, Colonel Joseph White Monroe told him to keep the families together and not to separate them [x]. “I have sold my slaves in that county, to Col: White of Florida, who will take them in families, to that territory. He gives me for them, (with the exception of a few sold there) five thousand dolrs.” [x]

1829: Monroe described slavery as “one of the evils still remaining incident to our Colonial system”. As president of Virginia's constitutional convention in the fall, Monroe reiterated his belief that slavery was a blight which, even as a British colony, Virginia had attempted to eradicate. "What was the origin of our slave population? The evil commenced when we were in our Colonial state, but acts were passed by our Colonial Legislature, prohibiting the importation, of more slaves, into the Colony. These were rejected by the Crown." To the dismay of states' rights advocates, he accepted the federal government's financial assistance to emancipate and transport freed slaves to other countries. At the convention, Monroe proposed that Virginia emancipate and deport its enslaved with "the aid of the Union."

Polygraph Tests: Efficacy and Utility Examined

At an early age, the development of deception skills marks progress. Children as young as two

years old begin to concoct lies, often for personal benefit, and these lies reflect the ability of the child to anticipate consequences and others’ behavior. Lying never ceases to provide the opportunity for personal gain, and as humans develop, these opportunities may seem irresistible and weighted, especially in the context of a criminal investigation or career development. Polygraph examinations, colloquially dubbed ‘lie-detector tests,’ seek to measure these diversions from the truth in such settings, and while the mechanisms associated with the exam involve scientific measurements, the test has proven unreliable in most courts, inadmissible evidence. However, the polygraph exam persists, and along with its frequent appearances in movies and on reality television, the tool is used in job screenings and investigations with more frequency than its accuracy imposes. Below, we will examine the utility of this tool and discuss the role it continues to play, despite its suspect reliability.

The most common type of polygraph exam, which happens to be the one that’s most publicized in the media, is the Control Question Test (CQT). In the CQT, the examiner asks both general and specific questions. Specific questions relate to immediately relevant subject matter. For example, in the criminal investigation in the murder of a man by firearm, an examiner might ask the wife of the victim, “Did you shoot your husband in the chest last Tuesday night?” General questions relate to a person’s past, and ask, for example, “Have you ever violated someone’s trust?” (APA) The idea behind this bifurcated line of questioning is to ask general questions that are vague and difficult to answer completely truthfully in order to create a baseline level of anxiety. If the person is innocent, they will be more likely to show signs of anxiety about general questions, because they have definitive, clear answers to the specific questions. Using the example questions above, an innocent wife knows for sure that she didn’t shoot her husband but may fumble when it comes to the question of betraying trust, needing to think back. This creates a situation in which her biological responses indicate more anxiety about general questions rather than specific ones. However, a guilty wife knows she committed the crime, and won’t have the same reaction to specific questions because she must lie to maintain innocence, the lying process often eliciting biological responses linked to deception. (Stromberg, 2014)

In terms of mechanics, the polygraph exam is quite simple. Variation exists across machines, however, in general, examiners attach between four and six sensors to the subject, including finger sensors, chest straps, and a blood pressure cuff. These sensors and others serve to  measure the subject’s blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate, and perspiration, among other factors. A combination of these factors and strategic questioning yields physical results for interpretation by the examiner, designed to determine if the subject told the truth throughout his or her questioning. The idea is that when any one of these factors is elevated, breathing rate, pulse, and/or the other aforementioned items measured, the person can be assumed to be lying. (How Stuff Works) A large part of this alleged pseudoscience, however, proves subjective and manipulatable, and as there exists no biologically-based measure for deception, the test surely measures the correlation of biological symptoms, and subsequent findings aren’t as easy to corroborate. “‘There's no unique physiological sign of deception. And there's no evidence whatsoever that the things the polygraph measures — heart rate, blood pressure, sweating, and breathing — are linked to whether you're telling the truth or not,’ says Leonard Saxe, a psychologist at Brandeis University who's conducted research into polygraphs.” (Stromberg, 2014)

Another drawback and link in the chain of inadmissibility for this device is the fact that the test can be fooled, and subjects can markedly manipulate the accuracy of the test results. These tests can be stifled through many means, for example, by medication or psychological manipulation. Taking certain muscle relaxants or mind-altering drugs before a polygraph may inhibit the validity of a test, numbing a person to the stimuli and potentially blocking a natural biological reaction to the need to lie for oneself. It’s easy to see how taking a benzodiazepine, for example, designed to limit or inhibit a person’s anxiety, may impact the results of the exam. A person may also engage in thought-control to cause their body to artificially elicit biological responses at strategic moments to create areas of interest on the test results. Publication of these strategies is abundant, and suggests the success of these strategies, which devalue the accuracy of readings further.

The New York Times published an interview with a former Oklahoma City police detective and polygraph examiner named Doug Williams to explain the strategy behind mind control. “‘Before your test, practice deciphering between the two question types. “‘Go to the beach’” when you hear a relevant question, Williams says. Calm yourself before answering by imagining gentle waves and warm sand. When you get a control question, which is more general, envision the scariest thing you can in order to trigger physiological distress; the polygraph’s tubes around your chest measure breathing, the arm cuff monitors heart rate and electrodes attached to you fingertips detect perspiration. What is your greatest fear? Falling? Drowning? Being buried alive? “‘Picture that,’” Williams says.” (Wollan, 2015)

If these tests are so fallible, why do we still use them? One common use for polygraph testing is the screening of job candidates and employees. Those seeking employment with the NSA, CIA, and several other government agencies are often subject to polygraph tests. Additionally, the exams may be used as a scare tactic. The examiner may attempt to convince the subject that this test will reveal the complete truth, so he may as well confess. This strategy has the potential to lead to proof of guilt that may have otherwise flown under the radar, undetected by the exam. These tests may also be used as a deterrent, for example, in post-conviction sexual offender treatment programs. (Bear Forensics, 2019) If a person knows they’ll undergo polygraph testing related to their behavior, they may feel more inclined to perform only behaviors that won’t get them in trouble. (Cummins, 2019)

Clearly, the debate about the role of polygraphs in our society remains active. It’s clear that while polygraphs can point investigators in the right direction, they aren’t fool-proof. A large gap exists between the hard science of DNA testing, for example, and the alleged pseudoscience of interpreting manipulatable and subjective polygraph results, and therefore, it’s clear why most courts don’t allow polygraph testing as admissible evidence. The utility of the exam extends beyond court cases, though, and therefore, extinction of the exam is unlikely any time soon.

Charlotte Iserbyt was Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of Educational Research and Improvement under Ronald Reagan. Once you enter this world, the Matrix begins to reveal itself. Professor Stephen Robbins wrote in Organization Behavior in 1979: “While Karl Marx used Hegel’s dialectic to formulate a theory of revolution, this same dialectic is also the fundamental basis upon which education is built.” (1) Once you understand the dialectical process, you’ll realize that this quote reveals everything. The dialectical process is how the Communist Party brainwashed China, by the way. Let’s start from the beginning. Thomas Chen writes in Thought Reform of the Chinese Intellectuals: Though force or compulsion is always around the corner, to be exerted when necessary, the preference is to resort to different forms of persuasion, at times semi-coercive or covertly coercive, until resistance is overcome and the victim ‘chooses’ to submit. His submission can then be hailed as ‘voluntary’ action. This kind of pressure is more subtle than direct, undisguised coercion; it is less likely to arouse a violent reaction; and, furthermore, it enables the Communist to boast that they use ‘democratic’ instead of dictatorial methods on the people… (2) I think it goes without saying that brainwashing by brute force would be nearly impossible in a country with 300 million people. Psychological methods are much more subtle, and will never be detected. Here’s how it works 1) Assemble small groups of diverse individuals with conflicting opinions. Allow them to debate and discuss issues, giving the impression of a free and open forum. Make sure, however, that the group’s facilitator/organizer is trained in Group Dynamics. From who you call on to speak, to how you frame certain questions, there are hundreds of ways to subtly influence group behavior. This doesn't mean that every teacher is a conspirator - as you'll see, just being in a group in an American classroom is brainwashing. 2) Meet constantly (schools/universities are great for this, since they organize kids into small groups that meet five days a week.) Your goal, over time, is for the group to “find common ground” or reach “a consensus.” This doesn’t sound particularly pernicious; in fact, dialogue and compromise seem to be hallmarks of democracy. People in group settings also intuitively want to be included and to reach a set of informal rules. Being socially ostracized by The Group is one of man’s primal fears. 3) Social engineers call these small groups sets. The environment they interact in is called the System. McElmore quotes an early study on Group Dynamics, Individuals facilitated into these cohesive teams or collectives must, consciously or unconsciously, give up some part of their “own personal independence to create a state of inter-dependence” between themselves and other group members. A set of persons not yet facilitated into a collective or one mind is considered a heap. (6) Please understand that you are not considered a conscious individual. Leaders of the social system consider the group "one consciousness." 4) Western civilization is historically based on rugged individualism and a set of morals that come from “above” (i.e. from God or Nature). Early Americans in theory “feared no Man but God,” so they would’ve been repulsed by this group consensus stuff. Therefore you must attack Christianity, father figures (i.e. the voice of the conscience), and the traditional family. 5) People tend to agree on stuff they have in common. If you love to play Bach concertos, you will likely be the only one in your class with this passion. Thus, it’s highly unlikely your classmates will decide “Bach concertos are awesome. We should all ask that kid to teach us how to play them and base our social hierarchy on who's best at piano.” Again, what people end up agreeing on are the things common to all human beings (our baser desires.) So in school settings a whole youth subculture develops that emphasizes casual sex, social status, drinking, etc. This same process plays out amongst adults, but they are more into money and power. 6) What’s so genius is that peer pressure (instead of direct action by the state) then forces individuals to conform and debase themselves. Judy McLemore writes, “Anyone with strong convictions, who believes in facts, universal absolutes, right and wrong, must necessarily set aside those facts and convictions in order to conform to the group and reach consensus.” (3) 7) If one does not conform (i.e. their conscience says “this isn’t right”), stress and cognitive dissonance sets in. Kurt Lewin, head of the Center for Group Dynamics at MIT (and founder of the first brainwashing lab in America) explains, "Change in organization can be derived from the overlapping between play [group consensus to embrace baser desires] and barrier [the conscience] behavior. To be governed by two strong goals is equivalent to the existence of two conflicting controlling heads within the organism. This should lead to a decrease in degree of hierarchical organization. Also, a certain disorganization should result from the fact that the cognitive-motor system loses to some degree its character of a good medium because of these conflicting heads. It ceases to be in a state of near equilibrium... (4) Basically, people snap if they don’t conform. The dialectical process is meant to totally rewire individuals on every level. Lewin continues, “The re-educative process has to fulfill a task which is essentially equivalent to a change in culture…The re-educative process affects the individual in three ways. It changes his cognitive structure (cognitive), the way he sees the physical and social worlds, including all his facts, concepts, beliefs and expectations. It modifies his valences (likes and dislikes) and values, and these embrace both his attractions and aversions to groups and group standards, his feelings (affective) in regard to status differences, and his reactions to sources of approval or disapproval. And it affects his motoric action (psychomotor), involving the degree of the individual’s control over his physical and social movements. (Lewin [in Benne] 24) (5) That’s from a manual about how to reorganize our school system, folks. He’s talking about reeducating Americans. 8) Create tension between "what is" and "what ought to be." This gives the group a common goal to pursue, and a sense of camaraderie in a struggle towards a seemingly better future. This is why colleges emphasize social justice, etc. even while their presidents fly around on private jets. Here's the problem: "Progress" and "Social Justice" don't exist in the moment. You get stuck on an eternal hampster wheel. This is called "Freezing" someone. 9) Teach total moral relativism. 10) The net effect of this stuff is to kill the Father's voice in the child (i.e. his conscience) and replace it with The Group voice. This utterly destroys our ability to perceive right from wrong, spiritual from mundane, etc. and makes us sheep that can be herded. People who live from "the flesh" are very weak and irrational. Strength comes from the Spirit. It’s much worse than I am describing, but I am getting tired. This is maybe 5% of their technique. Wake up! HOMEOPATHY HELLEBORUS

Black Hellebore / Christmas RoseHelleborus niger

The homeopathic remedy Helleborus is prepared organically from the plant called Helleborus niger (common names Christmas rose or black hellebore). This evergreen plant produces dark-hued, rubbery, palmately parted leaves that appear on stems which grow up to a height of 9 inches to 12 inches (23 cm to 30 cm). This plant belongs to the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae, and is known to be toxic. The short flowering stems of Helleborus niger bear big, plain flowers that bloom during the period between the middle of winter to the beginning of spring. These flowers are usually white in colour but sometimes have a pinkish hue.

Helleborus has two sub-species – Helleborus niger subs. niger and Helleborus niger subs. amaranthus. The second sub-species bear comparatively larger flowers that measure about 3.75 inches (9 cm) in diameter. The subspecies H. niger subs. niger is found to be growing naturally in rocky terrains, over a vast area stretching from Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Croatia, Slovenia to the northern regions of Italy. On the other hand, the subspecies Helleborus niger subs. acanthus only grows in northern Italy and perhaps also the neighbouring regions of Slovenia.

It may be noted that way back in 1400 BCE, Pliny, the famous Roman natural historian, had documented the use of black hellebore for treating mental problems. Even the ancient Roman and Greek philosophers used to drink an infusion prepared from this plant to augment their concentration prior to any long-drawn-out debate. However, as mentioned earlier, this plant is extremely poisonous and is currently only employed by homeopathy. Other herbalists are of the view that this herb is extremely potent and toxic to be employed in a safe manner. Noted German physician and the founder of the alternative medicine homeopathy Samuel Hahnemann proved the remedy Helleborus and published the findings of his research with the medicine in his Materia Medica Pura (1821-34).

Individuals who receive maximum benefit from the homeopathic remedy Helleborus are typically uninteresting as well as lethargic. The homeopathic remedy is most appropriate for people who are generally confused and their mental process is quite slow. Usually, such people suffer from grief, lack of concern, tetchiness, and depression. Very often, such individuals have a feeling as if their brain is in confusion and they are unable to comprehend what is happening around them. While such individuals may sometimes ask for assistance, usually it is difficult to console them. In addition, it may be useful in easing the other symptoms like feeling extremely hot in the head and cold in the body as well as the semi-comatose condition.

Headaches

People who suffer from headaches or a migraine accompanied by mental insipidness, perhaps following any injury or surgery, may find Helleborus beneficial as a homeopathic remedy. Frequently, such headaches start on the back side of the head or in the neck. In such cases, the sufferer may have the compulsion to pull down the head towards his/ her body for relief. The pain caused by a headache or a migraine may be accompanied by vertigo and light-headedness that may result in vomiting.

Digestive disorder

As a homeopathic remedy, Helleborus is often prescribed for digestive disorders, wherein the patient experiences aching bowel impulses accompanied by watery diarrhoea as well as mucus.
