They are a turbulent storm, and you are the one who must rise above the tempest, to a place that is quiet. It's difficult.

You must lift yourself from the confusion of the storm. Soar into the quiet space among the stars where everything is still. Is there a voice that you can hear? A single voice isolated in the stillness?

Is there anything? Any presence in the void with you? I can't hear anything.

Now I am with you, moving through the quiet space. My thoughts join with yours, extending the range of the search.

(You have to find me.) (Surely, you must know I'm here?) Empty. Alone. (We've shared so much.) Failure. Forced.

THE LEAP INTO LEGEND

He was the man with a thousand voices — or so it appeared. I experienced Jeff Buckley live a few times — and that first night, in 1993, a Monday at tiny Café Sin-é across from my East Village apartment in New York, is forever seared in my brain. Not knowing anything about him beforehand, I sized him up as just another cute guy with a guitar. Nearly three decades later, it has become increasingly apparent that I have never seen — nor do I expect to see again — a vocalist so spookily gifted.

Jeff Buckley leaves behind a story that seems scripted from myth. He is the SoCal boy descended from an angel-throated folksinger (Tim Buckley) who had died of a drug overdose at 28, when Jeff was only 8. He comes of age poor, toils in obscurity as a metal-band guitarist, seemingly unaware of — or resistant to — that which percolates within him. Landing in New York in his early 20s, he uncorks a five-octave voice to rival his father’s, and writes bold, baroque rock songs — multi-tiered, Zeppelin-esque anthems and keening, sex-drenched romantic balladry. He delivers them, alongside a crazy quilt of diverse covers, with operatic skill placing him among (some would say above) Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant. The latter would become a fan, as would Bono, Bowie, Lou Reed, Chrissie Hynde and Elvis Costello. At the height of his quick fame, natural forces — i.e. the Mississippi River — take him from this world, in an incomprehensible, freak 1997 drowning in Memphis. He would leave behind one studio album, “Grace,” and join the galaxy of brilliant comets who died too young, like Nick Drake and Gram Parsons.

Back to that Monday night in ’93. My singer-songwriter husband shared the bill with a sweaty 26-year-old Jeff Buckley at our St. Mark’s “local” — an Irish tea-and-coffee place by day that served beer and wine at night to about 30 people who’d pass the hat for neighborhood troubadours. No stage, just a spot where a table was shoved aside from the brick wall. My spouse lent him his capo so Buckley could play John Cale’s version of Leonard Cohen’s not-yet-ubiquitous “Hallelujah.” In my memory, the songs preceding this ranged from Porter Wagoner’s “A Satisfied Mind” to a Duane Eddy riff to an Edith Piaf chanson (in French), delivered with both offhand skill and devil-may-care goofiness, as around a boozy campfire or in someone’s smoky living room. Then came “Hallelujah.”

The disarmingly supple voice kicked into gear, encompassing all the sexual yearning and spiritual quest of that tune. Owning it. Murmuring, crooning, unabashedly howling — sometimes all within one line. The room collectively swooned. Rather than milk the moment, as the last echoes of “Hallelujah” faded, Buckley jokily — albeit expertly — picked out the intro to “Stairway to Heaven,” stopping to chat with the audience mid-song.

This was his routine, apparently. Slay, then lower expectations. I wonder now if the intentionally amateurish aspects weren’t so much impish boy stuff, but rather Buckley discovering his superpowers in the moment, onstage. Freaked out, he’d step back from that ledge, not yet ready to fly. Maybe he knew his low-stakes obscurity — what he later called his “café days” — would be short-lived, something to be savored.

Sure enough, within months, limos lined St. Mark’s Place on Monday nights, crowds spilled out onto the sidewalk and we watched from our fire escape as Jeff Buckley was spirited away to the big leagues. It all seemed foretold.

The footage of Buckley performing two years later with bassist Mick Groøndahl, guitarist Michael Tighe and drummer Matt Johnson at Chicago’s Metro on May 13, 1995, is peak Buckley. “Grace” has been out nine months, with Buckley touring nonstop ever since. It shows in the band’s effortless mastery of its boss’ often challenging material — the whisper-to-a-scream “Mojo Pin,” the spellbinding drama of “So Real,” the delicate, pandemonium-inducing “Lilac Wine,” all tracks from his debut.

By now, Buckley is in full possession of his preternatural voice, or rather, it is in full possession of him. Falsetto here, purr there, and a wail sourced from the Sufi Qawwali devotional music he loves and champions. Buckley rarely moves far from his mic, concentrating his energy on singing and executing impressive guitar work. But by the last third of the set, fully on, he steps into abandon: an instrumental of his work-in-progress “Vancouver,” segueing into the Alex Chilton/Big Star cover, “Kanga Roo,” which finds him excitedly pogoing (like a kangaroo?); a full-throttle version of the MC5 gangbuster “Kick Out the Jams,” on which he’s joined at the mic by a stage-diving guitar tech. Unlike most rock artists, he ends the show not with the typical rave-up, but rather sends his band away and leaves the crowd agog with a solo “Hallelujah.”

Between songs throughout the set, he resembles that guy I first saw in ’93, joking, listening to requests, vulnerable, smiling at the ardor beyond the stage lights. He gracefully handles the enthusiastic yelling and passionate outcry from the packed house, only once telling an obnoxious guy to fuck off (which gets a big laugh). But whereas at Sin-é, Buckley made holding back a riveting thing to watch, at Metro, he fulfills the promise he’d shown. He steps to the edge, and he flies.

it’d only be when Henry and mavy actually get to properly talk and interact that mavy’d realise he doesn’t actually HATE Henry, Mavy hates the GOV for abandoning him, not Henry because it isn’t Henry’s fault the gov left Mav alone in the ccc for 3+ years. He just deflected his hate on Henry because hen was the easiest person to blame. Soooooo- then he kinda mellows down a bit, lol-

“Narrator” is another hater of Kyle Baxter, (once again it isn’t two sided beef but-), “Narrator” will make up any excuse to subtly or non-subtly bully Kyle, normally through saying one or two mocking lines about him, or advising people not to “be like Kyle.” On the surface it seems like “narrator” just hates Kyle, because Kyle is pretty weak and always 5 minutes away from a anxiety attack (the wall + Kapper is NOT leaving boy in a good state) but….deep down…Kyle reminds him of a old friend, one that never came back….. one that left him and Andy (owned by @emperorcandy ) to pick up the pieces she left behind….

On a more silli note- topbot and plug have a kinda rivalry going on, mostly on who is the better toppat-bot- lol- there isn’t much to it-

Dan dislikes Felix, then again rupert also dislikes Felix- (trev doesn’t care about Felix at all-), it’s the usual thing of “the actual successful cousin that got to have a great life, get a good job as a lawyer, be loved by the family and who wasn’t abused throughout his childhood” oh wai- yeah…..that last part……. He always looks so tongue-in-cheek, like he’s in on some joke and waiting for everyone else to catch on. He doesn’t look like that right now, though. Tommy’s composure is waning—the guy who takes on the world with a million dollar smile and a statuesque cleft chin and flies choppers to Vegas on a whim and into Cat 5 hurricanes to help old friends and kisses clarity into men who thought they were finished figuring themselves out, that guy is just as much a slave to his desire as any mortal man, and Buck is winded by the fact that he’s played any part in that. — Buck’s got a wedding date, but as far as today goes, he’s also got a regular one.

two plus two equals

A 6x13 coda. Mostly word vomit. Enjoy(?)

Buck’s sous chef abandons him as soon as the cookies are done. He takes one look at the meat and vegetables Buck is pulling out to prep, declares that boring cooking, snatches a cookie so warm it droops in his hand and goes to the living room to finish his book for his class’s reading challenge.

Buck doesn’t mind, the cookies were the fun part, after all, and he likes that Christopher is comfortable enough in his space to just go hang out and ignore him. 

So he chops and seasons and sears, and after a while Christopher wanders back over to supervise until he gets bored again and asks if he can watch TV now that he’s finished his book. Buck agrees and pretends he doesn’t see another cookie disappear from the cooling rack.

He’s so focused on not over-cooking the asparagus that he doesn’t notice Eddie’s arrival until he speaks.

“Hi honey, I’m home,” Eddie says, an unmistakably joking tone, but his voice is still as soft as ever. A softness that seems to be reserved only for those in this apartment.

Buck shoots a smile over his shoulder. “Hey. Dinner’s almost done.”

Eddie nods and comes into the kitchen. He glances into the living room where Christopher’s so glued to the television he hadn’t even noticed his father’s arrival. “Oh good, he finished his book,” Eddie says, and it spreads warmth through Buck’s chest that Eddie didn’t even question if Buck just let him watch TV without doing his homework. The trust Eddie has that Buck will just do the right thing for Christopher…It takes Buck’s breath away if he thinks about it for too long.

He turns back to the food, cursing when he sees the asparagus is on the verge of burning. He hears Eddie puttering around behind him while he salvages the vegetables, and then Eddie speaks up again.

“Buck, there are three cookies missing from this rack.”

“Three?” Buck practically squawks, spinning around. He looks at the incriminating third empty spot on the rack, mouth open to defend himself until he looks up at Eddie and his gaze catches on the tiny smear of chocolate on his bottom lip. “Hmm. Might want to wipe your mouth before you go pointing fingers.”

Eddie grins, a bright, beautiful thing, before darting his tongue out to collect the chocolate. Buck turns back to the stove and tells himself the heat on his face is from the pan in front of him.

He opens his mouth to ask Eddie to set the table, but Eddie’s already there, pulling out three of everything. Half the sets, because everything Buck bought came in sets of six. He doesn’t know if that means anything. He feels like it should. Maybe it just means he needs to rotate the stacks in his cabinets so half the sets aren’t getting all the wear and tear.

He won’t though. Later they’ll wash these dishes together, and he’ll put the three plates on top of the three left in the cabinet, the three glasses in front of the three collecting dust, three forks on top in the drawer. Maybe those three forks will tarnish faster, maybe the color will fade from the plates, maybe a glass will get chipped.

He likes the idea that Eddie and Christopher are so intertwined in his life that they could wear out his dishes. It brings to mind the comfort of sagging blue couch cushions.

He smiles to himself as he plates up their food. If he’s always viewed his life as one big equation, and now he’s good at math, maybe it means the solution is right in front of him.

Day two of the @spnficrecfest is all about kink!

Given that Dean has several established kinks in canon, I've decided to list one fic for each! Which kinks in particular? I've had this fic on my to-read list since it was published last September, and I'm so mad at myself for leaving it so long. It's post-canon, set in the open-world Heaven 2.0 that Jack and Cas made, and Dean's cowboy kink not only features heavily throughout, it also serves a catalyst for change in Dean and Cas' relationship. It's hot and sweet in equal measure, and just a really beautifully written fic.

Dean and Castiel's Lagoon of Love by almaasi Explicit | 12.5k | 🐙

This one is described by the author as "Tentacle Porn For People Who Don't Usually Enjoy Tentacle Porn." While I can't speak to how true that might be, this enjoyer of tentacles had a great time. Set in an alternate canon where Cas remained human, the fic opens with Team Free Will arriving back at the bunker after a witch turned Cas into an octopus from the waist down. Dean's desire to have him act out the story of "Sweet Princess Asuka Meets the Tentacles of Pleasure" cannot be repressed, and Cas is more than willing to play along. Just normal boy bestie things!

Satin and Sawdust by Ltleflrt Explicit | 159k | 🩲

If you haven't already read Satin and Sawdust, let this be the day you check it out -- and if you have already read it, here's a sign that it's time to read it again. For the uninitiated, this AU is a rare treat in which Cas is the one having a sexuality crisis, all thanks to his neighbor (and handyman) Dean, whose low-riding waistband and extensive collection of lacy underwear is rapidly driving him out of his mind. It's been a while since I read this fic, but I was just thinking of it earlier this week, so it's definitely time to dive back in. (Side note, the fact that I can't change the color of the underwear emoji is an attack on my freedom of expression or whatever.)

This AU oneshot leans into Dean's medical kink, as he goes to see Doctor!Cas about a potentially "lost" sex toy, and requests a thorough examination. It's tightly written, packing plenty into 1,960 words, and also has some really great characterization -- from Dean's blend of humor and horniness to Cas' exasperation... and horniness. If you're worried about potential dubcon, check the author's end notes for some spoilers left out of the main fic tags :)

Coda, part one

Note: This is for @azrisweek 2024, day 5: slice of life. it is an epilogue to the epilogue, if you will, of another, much longer work i just finished, what hath night to do with sleep. you don’t have to read that to read this, but…it would certainly explain things! no warnings, though there are mild spoilers. Thanks to @yanny-77 for beta reading this with such a quick turnaround.

From the air, the world is small. Manageable. Roads become long, twisting black ribbons; the trees and their sighing leaves turn into an unending green sea. The earth and all her problems – all her insistence on dust to dust, ash to ash – is far out of reach.

Azriel banks, and a strong gust tosses him sideways.

It’s far too late in the winter to be flying this high. He had learned the hard way during that first confusing winter that to fly in August is to be threatened with sudden and unexpected grounding when the pampero winds race over the mountains.

Six months have passed since they returned home from Germany. When he closes his eyes, he can see the slight, pale thing that is Nesta Archeron, glowing contentedly in his home on Irkalla.

It doesn’t soothe the ache that had chased him up here.

Humanity is still a tangled, nearly unfathomable thing to him. He’s far more used to Rolvaath’s lolling, sardonic tongue than to the lines around a human’s eyes when they smile. He will never be able to read emotions on these strange faces, with their body language that conceals more often than it reveals.

Except Eris.

The tilt of his head, the sweep of his hands, the heft and speed of his breathing – Azriel has spent the past four decades learning what they all mean. His effort makes Eris look at him like he’s some strange, wondrous thing, something worthy of the youthful skin and laughing eyes while everyone around him dims and dies.

Sometimes, Azriel can see that other Eris, the one he would have been had he never summoned a demon. It follows after him like a shadow, just slightly out of sync. He has neatly trimmed fingernails and pure white hair. There is a wicked light to his eyes despite a slight stoop.

Beneath Azriel, the earth grows large again, all her misery and tenderness opening their arms to him as he circles down through the air.

Eris glances up from their balcony. His hair whips into his eyes, but not before Azriel sees the way they light up when Eris sees him. That older Eris stands just off-center. Azriel wishes he could kiss them both.

He unfurls from his crow form and pushes his fingers into the wind-strewn mess of Eris’s hair. That little piece of Beron glitters angrily when Eris kisses him.

“I want to leave,” Eris says against his mouth. “I want to go home.”

Azriel kisses the skin just in front of Eris’s ear. “We are home.”

“You know what I mean.”

And he does – a place with Nesta and Elisabeth, rooted in memory. “Rolvaath won’t like it.”

Eris makes a disgusted noise. “He never likes anything I do. What’s one more thing? Besides, it’s much cheaper to call international than it used to be.”

Azriel knows he should stand up for his fellow demon, but a larger part of him is…proud, that’s what a human might call it. Rolvaath had never specified that Eris and Azriel had to remain in Paraguay, after all, simply that he collect stories from all the old Nazis before their souls were out of reach.

The wind picks up even more, and rain scatters across their skin. “Alright,” Azriel says and kisses Eris once more.
