Tuesday Tunes 159: Another Holiday
Having last week played you a set of songs about holidays and the way we spend them I still had a few tunes on my list. This isn’t as obvious a title as you might think, and once issues of good taste had made me leave out Madonna, Cliff Richard and the Sex Pistols I realised that the ones that I still had were probably less familiar. But they are all good so I thought I’d go for a second holiday…

Cold breath puffs out past his lips as he picks up the pay phone, slips in a quarter and dials your familiar number. Atsumu rarely calls you on his cellphone anymore, out of fear one of the times he does, you’ll block him clean from your life.
The dial tone hums three times before you show mercy and pick up the phone, interrupting the deafening line. He lets out a breath he didn’t know he was holding, smiling softly as your voice, unsuspecting and calm, eases over the line.
“Hello?”
“Hey, baby…”
You’re silent, the only thing giving you away is the way your breathing seems to rag out, rasping softly as it passes through your teeth, a hurt you seem to try to fight back.
“Atsumu?”
The way his throat catches at the sound of his name on your voice has him completely caught off guard; aside from the fact that he hasn’t heard it in months, let alone his actual name on your tongue, just to hear your voice again makes him choke up.
“Yeah. Yeah, hey, it’s me,” he rambles, leaning against the wall of the restaurant he’s calling you at. He closes his jacket tighter around his torso, wondering if it’s warmer in your neck of the woods.
The ones he abandoned you at.
You were familiar. He needed the sense of familiarity as he travels, using you as a means to stay grounded after he abandoned you so promptly. Even right now, this wasn’t meant to destroy you, tear down the walls you’d spent years trying to mend, it was to seek comfort in you- selfish? Perhaps. But he is selfish.
He wished he could be like his brother, content with staying in one place and taking in every day with ease. But Atsumu has never been like his brother, growing far too stir crazy at the mere idea his roots might be planted somewhere, keeping him there for eternity. He doesn’t like feeling trapped, he hates it, even if feeling trapped meant he could be his happiest.
What Atsumu didn’t expect though, was for his roots to be you, the one thing he can’t sever himself from. You’re his drug of choice, his intoxication he can’t get sober from, and fuck, how he craves you.
“I’m… I’m thinking of coming back home.”
“Why?”
The way you snap at him your quick, firm answer makes his skin crawl. He’d been hoping, like a selfish idiot, that you’d somehow be excited for his return, like you had been every time he’d come home: you’d run into his arms like a missing piece, trusting him to catch you as you fall against his chest, your nose would bury into the dip of his neck while he cradles you close, kissing wherever his lips could reach and just for a moment, you both could pretend that this was normal. You’d meant to do this. Be apart for so long it tears you both inside, only for your reunion to be filled with joy and happy tears.
That this was normal, per se.
He thunks his head against the wall, sending a sharp pain through his skull, but he pays it minimal mind as he tries to conjure an argument to not make you hate him more than you already do.
“I want to see you,” he finally confesses. “I… I don’t know when I’m coming home, but it’ll be soon, okay?” He asks. When you say nothing, he closes his eyes, “can I see you?”
“You’re all talk,” you snarl, but he hears the tears in your voice. “You’re not coming home to stay, you’re coming home to get a morsel of attention and praise, then leave me again. I know that.”
He screws his eyes shut as you so clearly, so hurt, list the events that repeat every time he comes home. He wants to blame his success, chasing a high he can’t seem to find anymore, but he can. It’s a high with you, a thrill he gets when he sees your eyes glimmer with excited tears, an unparalleled sense of peace when you’re in his arms, one no person, place, or thing has been able to come close to.
But you… you were different. He loves you.
And Atsumu Miya is a runner.
“You should just keep playing house with one of your little friends that you make on the road,” you laugh cruelly. “Since they’re able to keep you much, much happier than I’ve ever been able to, clearly.”
“Hey, you wanna play the bigger person here? I never do shit with anyone when I’m out on the road, I’m loyal to you, okay?”
“My. Hero,” you spit from your gritted teeth. “You want a medal for doing below the bare minimum? Leaving me for months on end and coming back when you see fit, only to tell me you ‘stay loyal?’ You’re not loyal. You’re a coward.”
His heart breaks.
Coward. That’s what he is. He’s a coward, running from a life of comfort and stability to chase a high that he can only get in his dreams, a high that does not exist.
The closest he has, is you. And you don’t want him anymore. Rightfully so, Atsumu will give you that. But the idea, the mere concept of you not wanting him anymore sends him into a panic.
No, he thinks to himself, you’re bluffing, you’re all talk too, and the second you see him, your reserve will crumble and your heart will soften and you’ll love him again. You’ll plead for him to stay, to be with you forever, because you can make this work together.
He hopes that this time, he’ll love you enough to stay, too. He doesn’t bet on it, and the idea stings his eyes with tears. He screws them shut in agony. His root will only be severed when you do it. He hopes you do it mercifully. He hopes you’ll do it this time he comes home, setting you both free from the dance you’ve entangled yourselves in.
“I… I know im all talk,” he chokes, leaning his forehead against the brick of the wall he’s talking against. “But I… I know that we’ll be together soon. I’ll come home, and we’ll work it out this time. I swear.”
He sinks his teeth into his lip to try and fight back the sob that wants to break through. You hang up the phone, leaving only the dial tone to ring in his ear.
He smiles despite the tears welling in his eyes.
“I can’t wait until then.”

I'm speaking my truth... I have been watching f1 for a few months now, and I've become quite active in the fandom. I am very aware of who Zak Brown is. But... as someone who grew up with my parents blasting country music, I still think people are talking about Zac Brown every time I see the discourse.

when i close my eyes, i see you no matter where i am i can smell your perfume through these whisperin’ pines i’m with your ghost again
The castle is quiet. Awfully quiet.
It always is, admittedly. But, the quiet is different now. Louder. More deafening.
No matter where he wanders, inside and outside, it’s empty. Everything has been left just as it was weeks ago, untouched, the only exception being the sheets and pillows on the bed in their room.
Clutching his husband’s pillow at night is slowly becoming fruitless as the comforting scent fades over time and he loses the distinction of the one he loves most.
But he tries. He tries. Because it’s one of the only reminders he has left. Because it doesn’t hurt as much as walking into the kitchen does.
(It’ll all be over soon, right?)
But he walks in there anyway. He walks in there when his mind isn’t consumed with continuing the search and he stares and stares and stares.
And if he stares hard enough, loses focus on the world around him, then he can go back. Back to those happier times.
He can see the blossoms and the roses and the amaranth. He can see the pristine white gazebo. He can see piercing blue eyes and a stark white streak of hair.
He can see his husband. Donned in black, looking the most handsome he ever has. Looking the happiest.
(And, well, the “most handsome” says something, doesn’t it? Because he’s always found his husband very handsome. Even before.)
(When they were “just friends.”)
It’s even better when he closes his eyes. When he can put all his focus into remembering. When he can not only see, but he can feel.
Hands in his own or carefully cradling his face, treating him as if he’s actually something precious. Arms around his torso whether they’re fooling around on an adventure or cuddled up dead tired underneath the duvet. Lips against his knuckles or his cheek or his forehead or his own, soft and sweet and captivatingly addictive.
(Phantom, phantom, phantom.)
(It’ll all be over soon, right?)
He feels like home, even when they’re not explicitly "home." Maybe he is home.
He likes to sit or stand outside, on the balconies. Even though one of them is missing its bench. When his mind is too overwhelmed to conjure up memories, sometimes the wind embraces him, carries to him a sound in the distance that sounds vaguely like the voice he longs to hear once more, before it disappears through the red trees in a whisper.
He works day and night, until he physically can’t keep working. And then he’ll sleep on his husband’s side of the bed, holding his husband’s pillow, until he’s strong enough to do it all again.
He needs to get answers. There has to be answers. He needs them. He's trying. He's trying.
It’s hard, living without him. It doesn’t feel like living at all. Is it surviving? Is he surviving?
(He’s blindfolded in the dark, weakened by drugs and bruises and a mangled consciousness.)
(It’ll all be over soon, right?)
it’s a shame about the weather but i know soon we’ll be together and i can’t wait ‘til then i can’t wait ‘til then

i have a favour to ask all of you:
i’m writing a speech about how music (of all different genres) can bring people together. so my favour is that you guys either comment, reblog or even message me your music stories (direct or indirect), and how music has helped bring you closer to people. please make sure you mention specific artists and genres when you tell these stories (if you don’t remember that’s okay too). i’m hoping that i can make a collage of stories from all different people of all different backgrounds. i want pop stories, country stories, hip hop, blues, rap, bebop, classical, jazz, give it all to me.
a couple important things: please make sure that if you share that you are willing to have this story be spoken out loud to people (if you are not, please tell me before you give me the story. i’d still like to hear them even if i cannot share them) also, i would like names so it’s easier for me to tell the story, but feel free to give me fake names if you would like :)
it’s not enough to have stories from people i personally know, or people in my family. i need stories from everywhere.
and please, please, spread this around. i want as many stories about music as possible.
so please, let me know :)

I strongly believe that the fan culture surrounding artists nowadays is wild, I have seen so many people acting like not liking every single song by an artist is a crime or something when it's completely normal. I am not going to make myself listen to songs I don't like because I want to support the artist.
That dose not mean that I am going to say that I miss the old them, because that's rude and as an artist (not a musician but still) I 100% understand that your art grows with you but that doesn't mean I need to love this new direction.
An album can be not my taste and that doesn't make it bad but it also doesn't take away from my enjoyment or love for their old stuff.
Something I can hate the direction an artist is taking, and sometimes I just think their new stuff are just weaker and that's okay.
I don't like anything zac brown band made after 2016, but I still really love their old albums and they are very nostalgic for me (I do not agree with a lot of the opinions stated by some people in the bend)
I still believe that 16/04/16 is cavetown best album and I think his last few albums are just okay
I don't like Melanie Martinez re-brend
I still like a lot of their old stuff and me not liking their newer stuff doesn't take away from that
