So you know how the Wood Between the Worlds is supposed to have “air that is thick with life”? Maybe that was just a way of saying there was a lot of pollen around.
Theory: Jadis thought she was dying because she has really bad allergies.

Narnia Headcanons: Wood Between The Worlds.
1. The Lady of the Green Kirtle came to Narnia from the Wood Between the Worlds and she considers herself kin to The White Witch because of that. However, she doesn't actually know where she is from and Charn and it's destruction predates her by a few centuries.
2. Giants also came to Narnia from The Wood Between the Worlds. Susan reads the BFG later in life and decides they might have come from Giantland or somewhere like it.
3. There's a mix of creatures that weren't there at Narnia's creation that arrived from The Wood or from Earth.
4. The Wood Between the Worlds is connected to various points around Earth and other places. Usually through caves or deep bodies of water.
5. Bacchus is Just There in Narnia, he just showed up one day. Maybe through the Wood, maybe not.
6. Tash is from Charn and left after the Deplorable Word was spoken, wandering around the wood and wreaking havoc in other worlds. He entered Narnia not long before the Calormen arrival.
7. The Guinea Pigs are functionally immortal and are two of the sentient things living in the Wood Between The Worlds.
8. Father Christmas isn't from Narnia originally and travels through the Wood to get there. Jadis froze Narnia's pool in order to prevent him coming in and he would come around Christmastime every year for 100 years to wait for the pool to melt.
9. The Merfolk in Narnia come from Atlantis through a cave system that goes under the pools of water and opens in different oceans.
10. There are more than Eleven Pools, Jadis had been counting them before becoming ill and only got to Eleven. She's guessing a lot of the Wood's backstory but she's right.
11. The Deplorable Word loses it's power after entering the Wood, which is why it did not destroy Earth when Jadis used it to try to kill Aunt Letty.
12. Marsh Wiggles come from another world as well and they actually somewhat remember their time in the Wood. They come to Narnia a century into it's history and live in Archenland during the White Witch's reign.

Aslan in other Universes
Tumblr media
The Wood Between the Worlds is a realm of portals that allows magical travel between the worlds (see more in The Magician's Nephew). Its forest is dotted with lots of pools of water, each serving as a portal to a different world. I use this approach when it comes to writing Aslan in other universes.
According to my headcanon, The Wood Between the Worlds were created by Aslan's father, the Emperor-Over-The-Sea. He created not just the wood, but all the pools (worlds) in it as well, except for one: the pool of Narnia's world that - we know from the Magican's Nephew - was created by Aslan.
In this post I am summarizing how Aslan appears in other worlds/universes/fandoms, how I write him in them, what my headcanons are for him. I might bring only a few because these are based on the threads I have already written here, but I would like to emphasize that Aslan is present in every world (or to say fandom). So these are only the universes worked out, but as I write him more and more in other universes/fandoms, this list will be expanding. In fandomless worlds and threads with OCs his portrayal will depend on the plot itself.
The Chronicles of Narnia - Of course the default verse for him as his character originate from this fandom. I write him canonically just like we know him from the books and movies.
The Adventures of Merlin - This fandom is one of those fandoms outside of Narnia that Aslan fits in so well. Aslan is the creator of the Old Religion, he originally created it to unite people in him. Anyone who is following this religion with heart, that person is actually following Aslan. He gave magicians the power of magic to use it for good (Aslan has amber eyes and that's what we can see when a magician is using magic, the colour of their eyes turns amber for a second), however, unfortunately a part of them became corrupted by Evil and started using the magic for bad. They also started worshiping another deity, the Triple Goddess, who actually works against Aslan. The true followers who still believe in Aslan are Merlin and Gaius as well as the Druids (although some of them went evil like Ruadan), the people whom Aslan found worthy to give them the Cup of Life. Camelot and the other kingdoms can exist either in a different universe, or they can be part of Narnia's world as well (like an island in the Great Eastern Ocean).
Frozen - Arendelle once was a country within Narnia's world. Because of Runeard's sin, Aslan exiles Arendelle from there, he also sends the mist and the Northuldra to protect the border and the new situation. Later, he chooses Elsa as fifth spirit to restore everything. Elsa while frozen at Ahtohallan has a spirital talk with Aslan, and after they're done, Aslan revives Esla by his breath (like he does in Narnia).
The Lion King - I already have some threads with characters from this fandom, so I am adding this to my list. By most character Aslan is considered as one of the Great Kings of the Past alive; although he is more than that. Let's not forget these kings were mortal lions, but Aslan is not just an ordinary lion. We can also say this fandom takes places on Earth, so Aslan appears like someone who takes care of the creatures of Earth.
If you have any questions, please let me know. If there is a fandom that is not listed here but you would like to know what my portrayal is for Aslan, let me know. Also, if you have more suggestions, let me know. :)

After Digory had looked at the wood for a long time he noticed that there was a girl lying on her back at the foot of a tree a few yards away.

yeah. OH. wow.
i think all quiet on the western front and the lord of the rings are in direct conversation with each other, as in theyre the retelling of the same war with one saying here’s what happened, we all died, and it did not matter at all and another going hush little boy, of course we won, of course your friends came back

Why is it that there are hundreds of dimensions, but outside of the Wood Between Worlds, we have no recorded instances of dimensional travel apart from Earth and Narnia? We know that the Wood acts as a sort of bridge land that connects all the worlds, but why is travel between Earth and Narnia so easy?
I propose that it is because they are anchored to each other. Something from Earth exists in Narnia, and something from Narnia exists on Earth. The lamp post and the wardrobe. Those two objects, even if they were to eventually be destroyed, anchor the two worlds together. The very atoms that make them up are from another world and hold the two together even when they aren't directly involved in the journey between worlds.

You guys have no idea how frustrating it is to read a series that has literally no fandom whatsoever. I cannot be allowed to deal with these feelings alone but there is NOTHING I tell you NOTHING

— And do you or do you not have difficulty remembering such simple instructions? — Only during thunderstorms, sir.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965) / DARK SHADOWS (1966)
#don't mind me just absolutely insane about the possibility (probability!) that vicki saw tsom the year before coming to collinwood.#the boom mic in the stairs shot is always cracking me up.#finally me and you and you and me just us and your friend steve (the boom mic operator)#➤ roger collins & victoria winters. ┊ pain sometimes precedes pleasuremiss winters.#gifs.#➤ edits & art. ┊ the evans cottage art gallery.#➤ roger collins. ┊ I and my ghosts want a drink.#➤ victoria winters. ┊ because she’s lost and lonely. because she looks in shadows.#there's obviously far; far less of a christian overtone in ds — but i wonder if you couldn't make the argument that it isn't also#on some level about belief?#belief; namely; in the ghosts that roger resists and vicki with both arms embraces;#faith in the not-so-minor deity liz stoddard; choosing to follow her doctrine even in the face of conflicting truth.#one might consider collinsport a faithful congregation taking sermons from the mount — from the mouth of the reclusive ascetic;#conveyed by loyal (devastatingly; sacrificially loyal) disciples.#and vicki; searching for belonging; for a home; for a family; falls very lamb-like into the flock.#all old gods of course demand their sacrifices in blood: burke; namely; but also matthew; bill; roger (so-attempted)#if i were pushing it (which I always am) you could go so far as to say collinwood's son rises from the tomb.#''but the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night'' etc etc. demanding; first; sacrificial livestock; then virgin blood.#anyway! I digress.#''they say confession is good for the soul. well; my soul needs purifying.''#vicki as the prototypical virgin — the clean slate without history; clear water with neither dirt nor blood —#in which roger cleanses himself (somewhat forcefully!); to wash away guilt and suspicion;#the force of virtue that prevents the intrusion of sin; either through the wood of the confessional or very literally at her bedroom door.#''an innate sense of goodness'' etc; besides being something of a conduit between this world and the next:#re. the seances; the appearances of josette and bill; the various and varied encounters with supernatural; the time travel;#as one might expect of an angel ... or a saint. and one could argue that she goes on to restore roger's faith —#if not in the goodness of the world at large; then the existence of goodness; or in the worth of belief itself.#anyway. long way of saying i love man x his governess whether it's catholic or satanic. sign me up.

Happy audio fiction Sunday! Here are some of my thoughts about the fiction podcasts I've been listening to over the past week - including the return of both Modes of Thought in Anterran Literature and Elaine's Cooking For The Soul, the season finale of @innbetween, and an incredible @thesiltverses episode!

I think my brain should ruminate on the important characters but for some odd reason I'm staring at an unimportant side character and nodding in interest to myself. 😌
#Yeah sorry guys#brain decided tonight is a Think About Fresh kinda night <3#new age specifically ofc#TAG LORE DUMP SURPRISE-#So Fresh is the middle brother. is he *actually* related to Geno and Error? shockingly yes! they're blood! but while Geno and Error got#magic relating their magic to the world around them. Fresh relies on the world around him to sustain his magic. His soul is weak and#has been since childhood. One day he went missing out in the woods and Geno had to go searching for him. only to find that there was... some#*thing* on his soul. in this AU the parasite acts to keep Fresh alive. Fresh is its host and in turn it siphons magic out of nature (and#on occassion threats to him). The Parasite is a sort of nature spirit (a much younger brand of entity like the Tree of Feelings) and it#Chose Fresh. so. Fresh can go out and “speak' with Beasts of magical origins. he just understands them. they're drawn to him. and he befrien#ds the ones he can and slays the ones he can't. Dangers to his bros are no-goes.#He stays out so often tracking beasts because he relies on moving. by staying in one place he devours life like a plague.#Geno and Error had such powerful magic they were unbothered. but if Fresh stood too close to a person with low magic for a few minutes too#long? he could kill them from exposure alone. so he avoided traditional school. and towns. and guests. like a cryptid#chasing Error put a lot of people at risk but he cared for Error more than anything.#and yeah. Fresh has a couple friendly beasts that will homing-beacon to him if he reaches for their magic but he prefers to be alone when he#is able.#he's just so silly and goofy#new age au#OH! he also has a bird he uses to send messages between his family

pet peeve is when a story tells us something is aberrant, but it seems to matter more about who does the behavior than the behavior itself. rorschach in snyder's watchmen isn't going too far; we watch nite owl and silk spectre ii snap necks and arms with gleeful, loving abandon, in slow motion no less, while they lecture the audience about rorschach's violence. heroes frequently torture the plot contrivance out of a villain and then moralize to the camera when the villains do the same. indominus rex's killing spree doesn't shock or appall me; all the jurassic world dinosaurs act like mindless killing machines, and the camera lingers, rapturous, on their cruelty. it's not an outlier. there's nothing interesting about it beyond as a set piece.
in a better script, the indominus rex would have had pathos; a chimera made for entertainment, for profit, stitched together with no regard for itself and placed in a lonely box. a freak among freaks. of course it would be mad. but the film wasn't interested in it as an animal, or a character, only as a moving piece of scenery for people to scream at or breathe tensely while it can clearly smell and reach them but doesn't, because it isn't a character and doesn't have motivations.
it's just sort of boring, i suppose. it tries like all other empty drab things do to cover it with bombast and roaring and soaring brassy scores but it's just sort of dull. a sprawl of nothing.
conversely peele's nope is a transcendent monster movie, imo, because it thinks about the the whys and hows, how jean jacket perceives the world, how the world perceives her, and lets that shape the narrative as much as jupe or emerald or gordy. they consulted biologists and behaviorists, digging into the meat of it. the creature as a camera as an animal as a device. nope has layers. it takes its own insane premise seriously, and has something to say, and is a goddamn good movie. i forgot where i was going with this.
#always rattling that quote from peele about the difference between horror and comedy being a matter of timing#creature horror is my favorite horror and most of it is Bad but i love it. sometimes you strike genuine gold and other times. well.#drives me crazy when monsters behave only in ways meant to be scary rather than how a real living thing would act. you can do both.#i remember hearing about a woman attacked by a moose in her own back yard. it gored and stomped her then left back into the woods#a few minutes later as she tried to crawl away it came back and attacked her again. terrifying! for no purpose!#a prey animal attack is often more frightening and vicious than a predator's imo#because to be eaten -- that carries its own logic. a prey animal though holds fear and rage and desperation in the core of it. it Knows.#a lion is a simple creature compared to a beef bull who just managed to corner the farmer against the fence#unlike say movie monsters continuing to chase and kill and attack while a volcano goes off around them and literally burns them to death#don't get me started on the icy swimming feathered raptor#also the goddamn dimetrodon in the caves like. i have never seen a beast less suited for a goddamn cave. why is it acting like that.#the book jurassic park goes into the behaviors and dynamics and such of the dinosaurs and what it means that we made them and why#using the cutting edge of science to craft both story and its monsters#but the franchise is dreadfully incurious#as many franchises end up being in the end#frog croaks#i guess i wanted to complain about the jurassic world franchise specifically actually#i haven't read crichton since high school. maybe i should revisit and see if my opinion holds lol
