♕ @dailytudors: TUDOR WEEK 2024 ♕
Day Two: Favourite Tudor contemporary quote about or said by the Tudor family. >> 1/1 - ELIZABETH I's TILBURY SPEECH My loving people, We have been persuaded by some that are careful of our safety to take heed how we commit ourselves to armed multitudes, for fear of treachery. But I assure you, I do not desire to live to distrust my faithful and loving people. Let tyrants fear. I have always so behaved myself that, under God, I have placed my chiefest strength and safeguard in the loyal hearts and good-will of my subjects; and therefore I am come amongst you, as you see, at this time, not for my recreation and disport, but being resolved, in the midst and heat of the battle, to live and die amongst you all; to lay down for my God, and for my kingdom, and my people, my honour and my blood, even in the dust. I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too, and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realm: to which rather than any dishonour shall grow by me, I myself will take up arms, I myself will be your general, judge, and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field. I know already, for your forwardness you have deserved rewards and crowns; and We do assure you on a word of a prince, they shall be duly paid. In the mean time, my lieutenant general shall be in my stead, than whom never prince commanded a more noble or worthy subject; not doubting but by your obedience to my general, by your concord in the camp, and your valour in the field, we shall shortly have a famous victory over these enemies of my God, of my kingdom, and of my people. [Featuring various art, Helen Mirren as Elizabeth in Elizabeth I, Anne-Marie Duff as Elizabeth in The Virgin Queen, Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth in Elizabeth R and Cate Blanchett as Elizabeth in Elizabeth: The Golden Age]

This embroidered, fur-lined dressing gown has been used in at least five instances. It was most likely created for Anne Marie Duff as Elizabeth I in the 2005 BBC mini-series The Virgin Queen. It appeared in a deleted scene of Stardust in 2007 on Claire Danes as Yvaine. It was used again in Showtime’s The Tudors on Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn in the 2008 second season. In 2013 it was seen in the BBC mini-series The White Queen, where Rebecca Ferguson wore it as Elizabeth Woodville. Most recently, the robe was worn as a coat by Alicia Agneson as Princess Katia in a 2019 episode of Vikings.

"Beyond all this, and quite aside from the possibility that early in life the two had formed a bond of which we have been left no record, Elizabeth had reason to regard Dudley as a kindred spirit. Although the Duke of Northumberland died professing himself a Catholic, all his offspring embraced evangelical Protestantism. The male Dudleys who had not been executed were still being held in the Tower when Wyatt’s Rebellion led to Elizabeth’s confinement there. The experience, which for Elizabeth and Robert alike included the very real possibility of execution, gave them a profoundly memorable experience in common. Both were ultimately saved by the intercession of Philip after his arrival from Spain, Elizabeth as a safeguard against Mary Stuart, Dudley and his brothers because of their stature among England’s warrior elite and Philip’s wish for influential friends. Both remained deep in the political wilderness, however, as long as Queen Mary remained alive. The properties bestowed on her in her father’s will had made Elizabeth rich, and during Mary’s reign she was an inherently important personage as heir presumptive, but her life was quiet except for those moments of near-terror occasioned by official suspicion that she was involved in plots against the queen. Dudley, his conviction for treason set aside thanks to Philip’s intervention, settled into the peaceful existence of a country gentleman." - The Tudors: The Complete Story of England’s Most Notorious Dynasty by G.J. Meyer

the fact that Elizabeth I is titled "The Virgin Queen" implies that someone- possibly Mary I, possibly Lady Jane Grey, possibly Mary Queen of Scots- is "The Chad Queen."

"Elizabeth’s relationship with Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, was perhaps the most important in her life. The savage possessiveness with which she wrote of him - ‘a creature of our own’, as she described him, with all the imperiousness of the royal ‘we’ - in no way diminished his importance in her eyes. For a woman so short of surviving blood relations, he was the nearest thing she had to family."
— Sarah Gristwood, Elizabeth and Leicester: The Truth about the Virgin Queen and the Man She Loved.
