Here’s a little expository write-up on the history and geography of the worlds shown here. Someday I’ll have more to show of the personal story of these two critters and their travels; until then, a more macro-level description.

(most of this info has become outdated as modeling invalidated some original assumptions and I changed my mind on what I wanted here; future art of Mangala will reflect this)

Mangala and its sister world Kahira (visible in the background) are binary planets, orbiting one another in a manner not entirely unlike that of Pluto and Charon in the Solar System. Mangala is a relatively small world - just about twenty percent the mass of the Earth, something like if you took two copies of Mars and smushed them together; without the internal heat to drive a carbonate cycle long term, it had long been a frozen, dusty, and arid place when transhumanity first established a permanent presence in the Tahoka system almost a thousand years ago. Since those early days, terraforming using a Birchian soletta system (a huge but foil-thin Fresnel lens of mirrors, with a secondary focal lens for burning atmospheric gasses out of the regolith) has rendered it shirtsleeve habitable to baseline humans across much of the surface, although the global water inventory remains low* and the air in the “continental” uplands is stratospheric, with only the hardiest lichens establishing a foothold. Most of Mangala’s major metropolitan areas are located in the deep rift valleys and basins, where air pressure is highest.

Kahira on the other hand, a rock almost a fifth the mass of its sister world (a little under the mass of old Mercury), remains only slightly terraformed - surface conditions are persistently cold, with a thin barely-Martian atmosphere. Some of its larger rift valleys and craters have been tented over, aerated, and planted with tall low-gravity forest and grassland, a style of habitat construction dating back to the first Mars colonists almost six thousand years ago. Industrial complexes and buried cities sprawl out across the bare surface of the moon, with huge low-gravity lava tubes seeing extensive urban development.

The Yarragardee Basin, pictured above, is a graben basin in Mangala’s northern hemisphere, notable for the historic industrial city of Tirupati - here we see two road-trippers between cities on the basin’s great plain, taking a break in the long late afternoon of a sunset-day***. Having stopped for a night at a motel near Tirupati’s aerospace complex, they’re now continuing their journey to the city of Redmond-Tonasket, located in the Woronora Valles trench system about two thousand kilometers to the southwest.

* While plenty of water could have been imported from Tahoka’s cometary halo, it was decided not to do so in order to avoid inundating pre-existing cities in the valleys and deep basins. The extremely humid hothouse conditions that come after slamming dismantled ice moons through the stratosphere at over six kilometers a second were also broadly considered unacceptable.

** Smaller worlds have been terraformed in transhuman space, both by worldhouse and more open-air methods, but it’s largely the kind of thing that much more energy-rich systems do as a vanity project. Kahira may someday see blue skies, but likely not for a thousand years at least. (edit, one year later: I actually changed up some of this while simulating this system for stability. I’ll be posting more about this soon.)

*** Mangala and Kahira, being tidally locked to each other such that they always show one another the same face as they orbit their common center of mass, both have days exactly as long as their orbital periods - 403 kiloseconds, or roughly 112 hours. This is for convenience divided into month-weeks comprising four “circadian days” of 100 kiloseconds (~26 hours), with the remaining three kiloseconds added on to the last day of a month-week to keep synchronization.

Doc Hudson Fanfic: Sneak Peek #2

This excerpt is from May 12, 1950 (Cycle 9): Hud's best friend tries to convince him to race as a favor to their mutual boss, Smokey.

Note: Hud (age 12) is the youngest member of a gang of moonshine runners called the Still Chasers. They are led by an Oldsmobile 88 Rocket named Ghost.

Note II: In my headcanon, vehicles reach physical/sexual maturity at the age of eleven.

Note III: Ghost speaks with a heavy Appalachian accent, seeing as he's originally from the mountains southeast of Middlesboro, Kentucky.

Ghost nudged open the door to the Cotter Pin and rolled in like he owned the place.

It was busy for a Sunday on account of it being a race day, and all makes and models were crammed in, bumper to bumper, talking loudly and animatedly; "pre-gamming," as some folks called it.

Ghost scanned the room.  Sure enough, he could see Hud and the rest of the Still Chasers hanging out in their usual spot by the bar.  Everyone was sporting their in-town paint jobs to better blend in with the law-abiding rabble. Cass was a lovely shade of red, Flips and Otto were matching shdes of beige, Wilkis was white with red fenders, and Hud had chosen a handsome indigo blue that really made his polished, chrome accents pop.

He was also wearing whitewall tires. Expensive ones. Lord knows where he got the extra cash from...

Thankfully, the young tripper hadn’t struck out on his own yet, though he seemed to be appraising someone at the bar: A Mercury Eight with an almost gaudy, metallic orange paint job.

Ghost rolled his eyes. Hud's taste in other cars was...odd to his sensibilities, so to was his preference for male company, but to each their own.

The Oldsmobile made his way through the crowd as quickly as he could, but it wasn’t easy.  By the time he reached the table, the whole gang was staring at him expressions ranging from annoyed—Cass, of course—to concerned—as was the case with Otto and Flips—to smug with Hud and Wilkis.

“I dare say that's a record." Wilkis said with a grin. He adjusted one of his rear view mirrors so he could look at the clock near the bar. "Twenty two minutes and three seconds. Yep, definitely a record."

"So..." Hud added, coyly. "What did you do this time to get bumped? Oo! Did you try to 'council' another married wom..."

"Bite your tongue, boy." Ghost rumbled, hiding his annoyance behind a strained smile. He'd gotten a bit too close to one of the racer’s wives the last time they were in town.  In his defense, she was having relationship issues, and just wanted someone to talk to.  The racer, of course, thought he was trying to hook up with her and a fight broke out.  Normally Ghost could hold his own in a bar-room brawl…but it was seven on one, and he ended up in a heap on the curb.

The smugness in the kid’s expression gentled to something approaching skepticism, but he slid one of his drinks over to Ghost who accepted it with a smile.  “Thanks, kid.”

“So…why are ya here?” Hud asked sounding serious this time. "Disguised or not, it's risky."

“Yeah,” Cass agreed. "Not that we don't mind your company...but I ain't in prison, and I'd very much like to keep it that way."

He considered the group of vehicles, shrewdly. "Well...Smokey's in a bind; big'un by the sound of hit. I reckon we should help him out. Might owe us a hefty favor iffen we can deliver."

Everyone quieted up and they looked between each other, surprised.

“So…what does he need?” Hud wondered.

"He needs ye, Hud.” Ghost replied taking a sip of his drink.

“I’m not into trucks.”

Ghost coughed and sputtered as he choked on the liquid in his throat.  Cass and the others laughed.

“He don't need ye like THAT.  Geez, kid.”  He fixed Hud with an almost paternal look of concern.  “Why? Why? WHY? Would that be your first thought?”

The kid threw a sly grin in his direction, then took a long swig of his drink.

Ghost pursed his lips, and turned to glare at Cassie, since she was usually the team's default "voice of reason" when he wasn't around.

"Don't look at me," she shrugged. She might as well have added: "He's an adult, now. What he does in his free time is his business."

Ghost stifled a sigh and made a mental note to pay more attention to what the Hud got up to during their forays into town.  Prostitution was illegal, after all, and the last thing they needed was additional police scrutiny. He cleared his throat. “Smokey needs a driver.”

“What about Bernard?” Cass asked.

“Injured.”

“Bert?” Flips wondered.

“Smack drunk.” 

“Figures…” Otto muttered with a laugh. “But, there’s always Bob.”

Ghost said nothing.

“Ungh…Bob’s out too, geez.”  Wilkis huffed, nudging his empty drink container with a tire.

“Yeah, he done got hisself a mighty good hookup…and he still a-sleepin’ it off…”

Good-natured chuckles traveled around the table…but after a moment, everyone quieted up.  Gazes slowly began to turn towards the youngest member of the group.

Hud considered Ghost out of the corner of his eye.  “Let me guess…” he drawled with his usual sass.  “Someone got it in Smokey’s head that I’m the fastest car in Georgia or sommat?” 

“Mighta...”   

“I mean…they wouldn’t be wrong…” Hud continued. “I am the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, after all.”

Ghost rolled his eyes, good-naturedly.  Hud had started calling himself the “Fabulous Hudson Hornet” after their latest brush with the ATF…when he got separated from the team...yet somehow managed to evade an entire ATF taskforce AND police squads from three, different counties. “But whomever made the recommendation—seein’ as they know me so well—must surely be aware that I was promised three days of uninterrupted R&R once I got back to Thomasville.”  He looked over at Ghost, batted his eyes, and gave him the most tar-eating grin his mouth could manage.  “A race is a MIGHTY big interruption if you ask me...”

The Oldsmobile pursed his lips.  “Are ye gonna do it or not?”

“Hmmmm… I don’t know…” the kid drawled.  His eyes wandered back to the orange Mercury by the bar.   “I could think of a better way to spend my evening…”

“Purse is $3500.”

Hud whipped his front-end around so he could stare at Ghost with wide, blue eyes.  “Are you serious?”

Ghost nodded.  “$750 for first; $500 for second; $350 third through six. Ain't nothin' of note after."

Otto and Flips whistled.  “Damn…”

“That’s some serious bank.,” Cass agreed.

The young Hornet nodded, impressed.  “I can’t say no to that kind of cash…and,” He fixed his mentor with a lopsided grin.  “…both you and Smokey owing me a favor each; feels like I hit the lottery.”

“Hey, I never said…”  Ghost protested.

“Oh, what’s that?”  Hud was already driving to towards the front door, grinning like an idiot.  “I can’t hear you over the sound of my imminent victoryyyyyy. Oooooo…” He made a hasty exit before the Oldsmobile could get a word in, edge-wise.

Cass laughed and nudged Ghost’s fender with the back of her front tire.  “Wow.  Y’all drove into that one.”  She looked at the rest of the gang.  “C’mon boys, let’s go see how this shakes down.”  The rest of the gang cheered and tamped their tires before following Hud out the door, leaving Ghost to idle by himself for a few moments.   

The Oldsmobile sighed, heavily, finished his drink and followed the rest of his team muttering to himself about the “nerve of that kid” and “don’t know where he gets it from."

Days 6 and 7

Okay, so for those of you following along at home, I'm sorry to say that I have fallen behind in my adventure updates!

Day 6 was a fairly quiet one - last day of the Comic Con, and my fandom friends mostly had tickets for today (but no spare), so I had a quiet morning before meeting up with one of said friends when she was done re-visiting the dealers she wanted to return to.

We walked along the foreshore, had a lazy lunch watching the ducks and went back to the houseboat to wait for the others to return.

She forced me (not really - she asked me) to show her some TAG episodes. She was extremely impressed, particularly with the detail of the sets, but also with the show as a whole.

The day ended with a final Con night dinner for the whole fandom gang out in La Mesa (where our organiser lives). Then it was time to say goodbyes as members of the group would be flying out to their home towns across the US the following day.

Day 7 was a road trip to LA!

This was another surprise sprung on me last minute by the fandom friends. Four of us took the 2 hour trip up the freeway to Los Angeles.

First stop was a surprise for one of our party who is a big fan of the show Emergency.

A lot of the location shots for the show, including every time the vehicles left the station, were filmed here.

We were all content to just take a few pictures of the outside, but one of the firefighters who works here heard/saw us and invited us in for a tour! (This seems to happen a lot! And the station is not busy as a general rule.)

The place has barely changed since the '70's when the show was being filmed, so it was actually very cool to wander through and see things I recognised from watching the show as a kid. We even signed the visitors book.

Next stop was the California Science Center in Exhibition Park so one of our party could see the space shuttle Endeavor.

It was very cool to see it up close! And there were capsules from the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions on display (amongst many other interesting things!) too.

Our next stop was Little Tokyo for our remaining 2 road trippers to explore the stores there looking for anime related merch, memorabilia, soundtracks and treasures. There were a few interesting finds made but not much deemed worthy of purchase.

I did spy a Voltron figure - one with the 5 lions that join together - which I've wanted to get hold of for ages. But at US$699 I decided it was going to stay up on that high shelf!

Little Tokyo also hosts the memorial to Colonel Ellison Onizuka.

Next stop, lunch! The others decided I needed to try an In-N-Out burger. Not bad. Definitely on the high end of the quality scale for cheap and cheerful!

We drove through Griffith Park, and down palm tree lined streets in Beverly Hills before a stop around dusk to check out the neon lights in Little China. Dinner was fish tacos at Rubios, then began the long drive back to San Diego.

Made it back to my hotel before midnight, but not by much!

Now that I am done with the Gx manga, I wanted to talk about a crossover roleplay of Sailor moon and the Gx manga cards. Hear me out, the planet series cards might be fitting for the sailor guardians to use. They might summon it to fight evil forces and it might be awesome. Sorry that my Sailor moon fan in me couldn't resist lol because I know Sailor moon as a kid thanks to the internet and I only watched Sailor Moon Crystal not the Classic version. So here is the planet series cards that the sailor guardians (sans Sailor Moon because there is no card that relates to the moon in the manga) might use:

Monsters able to declare multiple attacks have high possibilities to finish Duels on their own. Instead of investing on several monsters to overwhelm the opponent with, we can simply bring one which can attack several times in a single Battle Phase. This has its pros and cons, as while the setups are often reduced compared to swarming the field we're betting all our efforts in a single card that might be countered with ease. But since we're just working in a single monster will be easy to recover afterwards, trying once again to either take down several monsters in a single turn or even achieve an OTK under the right conditions.

"The Tripper Mercury" shouldn't be underestimated for its low stats and high Level, as provides a variety of effects to take advantage of the board upon its arrival. First and most important, "Mercury" is able to attack twice each Battle Phase, easily compensating its poor ATK with the ability to defeat multiple monsters to deal a maximum of 4000 damage on its own. If Tribute Summoned "Mercury" will force all monsters to turn into Attack Position, assuring that any defensive monsters on the opposite field become vulnerable as well able to deal damage after each attack. We can go a step further and try to Tribute Summon this monster using three monsters, which as a result the opponent's monsters will lose ATK equal to their original ATK, so unless they have some stat boosts they'll become statless and ready to deal clean damage against. Overall, "Mercury" compensates its biggest flaw with a variety of abilities to dominate Battle Phases with, and with some extra work it can easily overcome any monsters stronger than itself.

"Mercury" feels obligatory to be Tribute Summoned to achieve all its abilities, but is optional nonetheless. Cards like "Mausoleum of the Emperor" and revival effects like "Call of the Haunted" can easily bring out this monster when the best moment comes for its double attacks, specially in a time where defensive strategies are often rare to fight against. If we're going for the Tribute Summon to rearrange all monsters on the field, cards like "Unshaven Angler" and "The First Monarch" will easily cheapen its arrival. If instead we're going for the three tributes for its full potential, cards like Frogs as well Pendulum Monsters can easily gather several monsters at once for little to no effort. To further increase the chances of bringing "Mercury" with one or both effects, "The Monarchs Stormforth" will use an opponent monster for the summoning as well becoming a viable option to deal with some dangerous creatures.

"Mercury" has all the potential to dominate Battle Phases with its abilities. Even though 2000 ATK, its double attacks and the two additional effects making openings by manipulating the field will assure big damage to the point of defeating the opponent on the spot. Some Decks will be more punished than others with its ability to turn monsters into Attack Position, like Stall strategies or archetypes such as Ghostrick which relies on defensive fields. This ability not only affects the opponent monsters but also ours, so we can try to activate Flip effects in the process to obtain additional results (But be aware the opponent might also obtain said effects as well). Its summon by three tributes however is the best way to assure as much damage as possible, as well able to weaken any monster stronger than "Mercury". However that might not be necessary unless we want to achieve lethal damage, as we can work along Equip Spells such as "Moon Mirror Shield" or cards like "Enemy Controller" and "Shrink" to have the upper hand against stronger monsters or simply have coverage for the opponent's turn.

"The Tripper Mercury" is an interesting monster as has a very clear flaw but compensates it with a variety of effects. Even though is a weak monster to be Tribute Summoned, specially if going for the three tributes, this can result on great scenarios to take advantage of its double attacks. However, unless we wanna weaken all opponent's monsters this is pretty optional due the offensive nature of the card game, and we can take several shortcuts like Special Summoning it or working along coverage to solve its poor stats while also having the upper hand with its attacks. "The Tipper Mercury" is far from perfect as won't stay for long due its poor stats, but has decent options and an ability to deal tons of damage on its own or with some investment.

Astrology for the week ahead: August 15th – 21st

A vacation mood is in the air all week with no one in the mood for heavy lifting or strife producing competition, with many positive aspects and nary a strife producing challenging aspect. BACKGROUND.

evelyn charlotte banks was born june fourth , 1930 and was given the dark gift in the early fifties ( so you’ll definitely notice some call backs to that time period ). she has grown and developed and adapted throughout time better than most , but you can take the sock hop away from the girl but not out of her. she remembers her life before , but doesn’t dwell on nor even really miss it.

she grew up in your rather classic straight lace upper middle class suburban family and community with her perfect nuclear family. the town they lived in was small , close knit , and everyone knew everyone but especially who evelyn’s family was. 

she was in a lot of pageants growing up and was even platinum blonde for most of her human life , because she was so afraid her red hair would keep her from being successful.

when she was eighteen years old with big shiny dreams of silver screens , luxury , and eyes all on her was all she could think of. she left her family and their small generational hometown in georgia for bigger , better things in none other than hollywood. 

she was on her way ,  so desperate to be in the movies and be like marilyn monroe but shortly after is when she became ensnared by darkness and evil.  she wasn’t very successful at all in the beginning so , she started wearing tighter , shinier outfits when she was on stage when suddenly she started getting actual recognition. 

she wasn’t acting like she had intended , but it turned out her voice was good enough to land her plenty of lounge singing gigs in multiple joints. it was one particularly dark , seedy , dangerous joint that only opened once the sun set completely and closed upon the sun rise that she finally started to get propositioned to do so-called ‘ film gigs. it was also in this place where she met him for the first time. 

( tw: cult ment. ) her maker is very old and before she ever knew he was anything more than a handsome older gentleman she was fully under his control. he was something of a cult leader who for the most part glamoured his ‘ followers ‘ , but that was never necessary with charlotte. she was thoroughly and completely in love with her maker , she even ‘ married ‘ him and lived on his compound.

( tw: rape ment. , assault ment. ) it wouldn’t be for a few more years that he would finally turn her ,and only after he found her brutally beaten and raped for nothing more than a snuff film. her maker found her on the verge of death and wasted no time in saving her life by bestowing his dark gift upon her. 

( tw: murder ment. ) to say that lottie felt indebted to and fell in love with her maker to the point of obsession was an understatement , she would do anything and everything he asked of her including murder not in the name of feeding.

( tw: death ment. ) the films she was in were kept in the dark underbelly of the industry and no one was none the wiser , not to mention everyone thought she was dead after her last film.

so , she eventually did make her debut in film and was even on the silver screen finally. this only lasted for as long as she could get away with not aging before eventually she disappeared off the radar with her maker. the two traveled far and wide for a long time , but eventually went their separate ways even though lottie wanted nothing of the sort her maker commanded she live her own life without him now.

( tw: murder ment. ) she has since become something of a murderer ?? she prefers to call herself an assassin but it’s rare anyone actually pays her to murder anyone. you could even call her  a serial killer if you take into account that her victims are almost always men of the unsavory variety , but she has two sides to her personality and it’s not like she’s full maniac.

if you know what yandere means she fits that description very well , and if you don’t know what it means well:  a common term in otaku fandom , a yandere is a person ( usually female ) romantically obsessed with someone to the point of using violent means to get them in their arms. often can be seen featured with a sharp weapon and a psychotic grin.

pretty much she comes off as this sweet , lovely , beautiful woman with lots of talent but in reality she can switch that off in an instant and literally kill you without any hesitation if it benefits her or someone she loves.

anyway she has been in estonia for only a bit now , but how long is flexible. she probably likes the scenery and the supernatural presence , but she’s honestly not a country mouse at all. 

also not that she needs money , but there is very little she loves more than attention and money. she works at a club as live entertainment on occasion , singing or stripping or bartending or occasionally doing , mostly for the attention but also if she’s in need of money.

I found out today that Jesse has voiced lines in Duel Links for when he uses Tripper Mercury, his card from the manga. Cool little Easter egg since it wouldn’t be a thought for most people that haven’t read the manga to put it in his deck!

North American Duel Student: Jesse Butterfly. An incredibly strange and somewhat vain boy, with a penchant for loose and warm clothing....even in the middle of Sahara desert like heat. He constantly carries around make up and various of things and ends making him the to go to person to get hard to find items on a moments notice. He is touched averse and tends to prefer to initiate physical contact instead of receiving making him come off as snobbish to those who don't know him. His only friend is a taller and equally strange boy known as River who came to the school with him. Many people have noticed that similarities between him and current famous Pro duelist Johan Anderson, he continues to brush it off as coincidence.

He plays an insect deck and the current holder of the Tripper Mercury card(tho many question how it came into his hands in the first place).

There are rumors circulating in the North academy of seeing his skin cracking like paint or clay, and blue light emanating from from those cracked pieces.  Though once again these are rumors and have never been proven.  He is one of the few selected he will get the chace to study at the main school Duel Academy for a short time.[Thank fuck they took River too having to deal with that guy without Jesse having him on a leash would be hell]

[........Then again considering the talk about what had been happening over at Duel academy over the years its been open, perhaps they should keep a closer eye.]
