Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss. Her lips suck forth my soul: see, where it flies!— Come, Helen, come, give me my soul again. Here will I dwell, for heaven is in these lips, And all is dross that is not Helena.

One on one PvP tabletop RPG based on Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart where one player takes on the role of a murderer trying to present an unremarkable facade until the investigation dies down and the other player takes on the role of the plausibly deniable ghost of the victim (that might or might not just be a stress-induced hallucination) trying to make them crack in an incriminating fashion.

Halloween Literary Hot Takes Special: Poe and The Magnus Archives 1:1 comparison
So, a while back, @catwingsthespatula and I were buddy-listening to The Magnus Archives and I pointed out that S1:E33, "Boatswain's Call," is basically a modernized retelling of Edgar Allen Poe's early short story "M.S. Found In A Bottle." Anyway, since I've been reading a bunch of Poe short stories this October, I thought it would be kind of fun to categorize them as different types of Magnus Archives entity-affiliated statements.
Metzengerstein = The Desolation
M.S. Found In A Bottle = The Lonely
Shadow, A Parable = The Dark, The Lonely
Silence, A Fable = The Lonely
Berenice = The Spiral
Morella = The End
Ligeia = The End
The Fall Of The House of Usher = The Spiral, The Buried, The Lonely
William Wilson = The Stranger
A Descent Into The Maelstrom = The Vast
The Masque of the Red Death = The Corruption
The Pit and the Pendulum = The Buried
The Tell-Tale Heart = The Spiral, The Slaughter
The Black Cat = The Spiral
The Premature Burial = The Buried (obviously)
The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar = The End, The Corruption
The Cask of Amontillado = The Buried, The Hunt
All my Poe/TMA fans (and I know if there is any place I would find ya'll, it WOULD be Tumblr), let me know if you agree with my takes.

E. A. Poe's "The tell-tale heart" by Alberto Breccia
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are some panels from one of the most fantastic comic books ever created (you can find it all here).
This adaptation of Poe's short story is a perfect example of how to use the structure and framing of the panels, to convey the rythm and pathos of the original.
The simplicity is staggering and the use of negative spaces and repetition is exceptional. I urge you all to go read it!

Have you read...
Tumblr media
A man confronts himself and an unknown listener with his desire to murder an old man. In this classic psychological thriller, the reader will find many more questions than answers. Even though this is one of Poe's shortest stories, nevertheless it has become one of his most highest regarded works. It is a profound and, at times, ambiguous investigation of the paranoia that may lie within the depths of one man's mind...

Dread by the Decade: The Tell-Tale Heart
👻 You can support me on Ko-Fi! ❤️
Tumblr media
★★½
Plot: After years of abuse, a weaver kills his master, only to be wracked by guilt.
Review: Though successful in some ways, this film ultimately lacks the dread and desperation cultivated by its source material.
Tumblr media
Source Material: The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe Year: 1941 Genre: Psychological Horror Country: United States Language: English Runtime: 19 minutes 40 seconds
Tumblr media
Director: Jules Dassin Writer: Doane R. Hoag Cinematographer: Paul C. Vogel Editor: Adrienne Fazan Composer: Sol Kaplan Cast: Joseph Schildkraut, Roman Bohnen, Oscar O'Shea, Will Wright
Tumblr media
------
Story: 2/5 - The removal of the short story's most horrifying element—that the unhinged murderer kills an innocent, unsuspecting man for a senseless reason—hampers the film and makes it a bit generic.
Performances: 3/5 - Schildkraut does a solid job portraying an abused man pushed to the brink, and Bohnen is likewise decent as his cruel abuser.
Cinematography: 3.5/5 - Some nice use of lighting.
Tumblr media
Editing: 3.5/5
Music: 3/5
Sets: 3/5 - Nothing special, but well-dressed enough.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 3/5 - Like all other elements of this film, the wardrobe is serviceable, but not terribly striking.

Trigger Warnings:
Mild violence
Abuse
